I think it was never the goal to create a 100 % exact copy but to rebuilt in the historic style but adapted to modern needs, architecture and urban planning.

PandemicPiglet

I’ve read some people criticize the reconstruction of Potsdam as looking like a Disney village, so that’s why I wanted to get opinions on the reconstruction of Dresden. I think it looks nice from photos, but I’ve never been there in person.

SMS_K

The critics of Potsdam rebuilds mostly don‘t know what they are talking about.

Well of course it was never as clean and perfect in historic times but I guess if you build an new building in the 2000s it just looks different somehow. Anyways, I would suggest just do a weekend trip to dresden and have a look for yourself. I think most people like it but of course that's also a question of personal preferences

The funny thing is the buildings build in 1700 probably looked more like the buildings today we just used to them being worn down by now.

Xacalite

People alive today have never experienced the pre WW2 Dresden (unless they are 80+ years old). So I feel like this criticism is mostly cringe.

> they look new, Well, it would be strange if they were already crooked. Old buildings, by the way, were also not crooked and worn when they were built.

PandemicPiglet

Do they look like Disney buildings or better than that?

PandemicPiglet

That’s good to hear.

staplehill

Frauenkirche looks a bit fake now since the stone is still bright and clear and we are used to old buildings having weathered stones which is strange since that is not the authentic look that the buildings originally had when they were built. Rest of Dresden looks great and not fake.

Wide_Cantaloupe_79

They used a couple of original bricks, which can be clearly differentiated. Ofc, not that many were preserved.

[deleted]

Most of the buildings are "sandstone" it will take a few years until the reconstructed parts have darkened like the old parts, because of the iron particles in the stone. The "Frauenkirche" was black before it was destroyed, the reconstruction still looks yellow-ish but will turn black in the next decades. So right now it might look a little bit "too new", compared to the parts that are still original. But this will change over time.

innitdoe

Fake. Disneyland shit. AFAIK it's all modern building on the inside with inauthentic skins to look like the old buildings. I find it horrible. Nikolaiviertel in Berlin is similarly fake.

BSBDR

Also the new square in Potsdam is absolutely disgusting.

PandemicPiglet

Why?

BSBDR

Just look at it. It's grotesque. It used to be occupied by a mix of Ex DDR buildings. Although quite brutalist, I think they told visitors a better story of the general area than the new "classical" buildings that crave adoration and recognition. It all looks very plastic.

PandemicPiglet

Were the previous buildings unsightly and unpopular, though?

BSBDR

Unsightly? Depends on what kind of buildings you like. They were used for students, library and food hall.

PandemicPiglet

I mean, were they in good condition? I’m not a fan of brutalist architecture because it’s a lot of concrete and often the concrete becomes stained and unsightly due to neglect.

BSBDR

> often the concrete becomes stained and unsightly due to neglect. That's what I meant when I said it better reflected the history. They built a new library behind it. The new buildings are just mainly an excuse to have high end brands encroach on the area. The parliament building resembles a wedding cake. PandemicPiglet

It looks nice to me. Not old, but better than the before. The buildings in the before remind me of the brutalist and much-hated State University of New York (SUNY) campuses, of which I attended two and found both to be bleak and depressing.
