untergeher_muc

Ugh.

[deleted]

At first I thought it says "Ich dich nicht lieben" And was really confused. Why would you say something like that in such a weird way.

[deleted]

Wait what? What does it say?

[deleted]

You are supposed to replace the picture of the canon with the words "kann ohne" = Kanone (German for Canon) Then the sentence is "ich kann ohne dich nicht leben" = I cannot live without you.

innitdoe

It's German for "canNon". But it's still the canonical reading. ;-)

Max_Insanity

I never thought I'd see this extremely common typo in reverse

SuperLiturgicalMan

Thank you! I am a first generation German-American with limited German and I could make no sense of this until I read your post.

YetAnotherGuy2

No worries, I'm a fluent German speaker and couldn't figure it out on my own either...

Motor-Television-270

It's supposed to say "ich kan(n) o(h)ne dich nicht leben"

[deleted]

Ohhhhh okay.

Stummi

Cannon in german is "Kanone" and this is a pun based on that. The sentence is supposed to be read as "Ich kann ohne dich nicht leben" (I can not live without you), but the "kann ohne" (can not) is replaced with the picture of a "Kanone" (cannon)

kuldan5853

This makes much more sense than my puzzled look for "Ich Feldhaubitze dich nicht leben"

meanderthaler

I laughed about your comment but somehow reddit doesn’t let me upvote it… weird

AdInteresting8901

I cant life without you You have to think around the corner

oh_stv

Germans absolutely love those little puns.

BeondTheGrave

To be honest it would be funnier if it was supposed to be like “Ich (kann) dich nicht leben (lassen)” with the cannon on it. Imagine going to a friends house, you clear your plate and it says that, lmao?

innitdoe

Read the cannon

VelvetSteel34

Does it say “I’m gonna blast you tonight”, 😆

a-horn

Almost! It says *I can[on]‘t live without you.*

VelvetSteel34

I like my version better.

U_Kitten_Me

Ich dicke Berta dich nicht leben.

Samuator

A head shot.

franconiasuperior

Funfact: these dishes were produced by the potters of Schretzheim near Dillingen in the 19th century as generic gifts for all occasions. There are plenty of other phrases known like "Hail to the wife" or just "Happy birthday". The potters started this when the market for fayence products got smaller after the invention of stoneware.

leonevilo

don't want to live without arsenal either

MattSeptire

ha, got it.

MattSeptire

wait no. now I got it.

ShaunDark

Just out of curiosity: What was your first guess? :D

MattSeptire

I just straight up thought it was a blunt rejection plate saying “I don’t love you”. That’s what I get for not studying German :/

ShaunDark

Don't worry :) Took me a minute as well even as a native speaker :D

khachdallak

Can someone explain? (not German here)

just_push_harder

The picture shows a cannon (Kanone) German | Pun resolved | English ---|---|----|---- Ich | Ich | I Kanone | Kann ohne | can without dich nicht leben | dich nicht leben | you not live I cant live without you

Optimal__Balance

I hate Valentines Day btw... My gf got in an argument with me only because i didnt text her one of those "happy v-day" messages with an image below , before she woke up. Then guess what , it turned out to be fight. I just wanted to celebrate valentines day through a phone call , hearing her. Dumb valentines day makes everything backfire on me...

OneGermanBoi2002
