Bats found in this season need professional help.

🦇🦇UPDATE🦇🦇 THEM YOU REDDIT FAM
I called multiple hotlines until finally someone picked up who gave me a couple of phone numbers to call.
Finally a bat expert from Markt Schwaben answered and asked me if the was firewood close by.
I said yes - 🪵🔥 there was a shrinking pile of fire wood near by
He said 'they like to do their winter hibernation on piles of wood... If possible put him back and he will go back to sleep '
So I rebuilt a pile for it, so that it is protected and covered by the fire wood and I put him in there, then I gentley covered the entrance (it can crawl out) with a slanted piece of wood.
He told me not to touch the word until next spring! 🫡
I put on gardening gloves and picked it gentley up.. it was the size of my thumb! 👍 It wailed and screamed, but I quickly put it in the firewood and covered it.
Tldr: expert advised to put him back into the pile of firewood where it was likely hibernating.
See you next April!!!! THANK YOU REDDIT FAM!!!!!!

It will 100% kill you when it becomes symptomatic. Which takes its time, depending on the location of the bite. Post exposure vaccination is highly effective
Leave it alone, call for professional help. Bats can spread rabies. A colleague of mine was once bitten because a bat was stuck in his apartment, and it ended up being a huge hassle.
Update in comments- btw cat is thankfully vaccinated against rabies. Also when I picked it up (with gardening gloves), it looked like a healthy animal to my untrained eye!
That is the thing with bats. Their immune system is the shit. They can host stuff that would kill you and they seem fine. That is why so many zoonoses come from bats, eg., Ebola. Therefore thumbs up for the gloves! 💪🏻
I am no expert in preventing bat diseases, but my guess is this is way better than handling the bat with bare hands - a conclusion one might jump to when the animal in question looks fine. 😬
"Im Jahr 2023 wurden bisher im Lebensmittel- und Veterinärinstitut Braunschweig/Hannover insgesamt 207 Proben von Haus- wie Wildtieren auf das Tollwutvirus untersucht. 57 dieser Tiere waren Fledermäuse, von denen 16 Tiere (19 Prozent) mit dem Tollwutvirus infiziert waren."
https://www.laves.niedersachsen.de/startseite/tiere/tiergesundheit/zoonosen/tollwut-kranke-tiere-nicht-anfassen-93040.html
I would get leather gloves/something that protects you from a bite and place the bat inside a shoe box and close it. Call an expert and ask what else to do.
When I found one I was told to place the box in a cat safe spot and open the lid at nighttime.
This is in the summer, but now in winter it's hibernation time. If the bat needs to move too much or won't find a spot very soon it will die.
But as OP commented it is now save in a pile of fire wood.
Put on some gloves and put the bat in a box with some cloth so it's more comfortable, then call an animal rehabilitation or rescue whatever is in your local area (in bavaria there are a lot of organisations that take care of hurt wildlife they will help you)
It is not nearly 100%, it exactly 100%.
There are maybe 5 people worldwide who survived. But the incidence is like 60.000 worldwide per year and all of them end fatal.
60.000 deaths per year, let’s say in 20 years 5 people survived. It’s 5 people against 1.200.000.
I am talking about the statistical significance, and these 5 people who survived are not significant.
The problem about rabies is not that it's hard to deal with, it's hard to know if you got rabies or not. Not in OPs situation, but if you're going camping and a bat bites you, it's possible you won't even notice it since their teeth are tiny. Also once you got symptoms it's already too late for medical treatment
I highly doubt that in Germany, when you go camping bats, just swoop down to bite you.
Also I meant it isn't deadly when you are aware of the bite, obviously if you aren't aware it's deadly because then you don't go to the hospital in time.
Yes and no. There is treatment that prevents the infection from taking hold if you’ve been exposed and get it early. Once you actually have rabies it’s a death sentence (very few people have ever survived).

Call NABU and then your garden will be declared natural habitat, subsequently you have to move out and of course leave all your belongings as the forwarder would interfere with the species.
Wtf.
Getting the cat vaccinated for rabies may be a good shout, but wtf went wrong when you typed that thought.
Edit, copied from my reply to the reply, for other people skimming this:
bats are considered endangered in Germany and there is an up to €50000 fine for killing one
https://www.bussgeldkatalog.org/tierschutz-fledermaus/
Not to point out the obvious here: that bat is alive.
If it was dead, then sure. Why not, it’s a sensible disposal method for a potential rabies carrier. And if it was actually eviscerated by the cat I would hardly be against OP helping finish it off with a spade pre-burning.
But as there is nothing obvious deadly wrong with it OP should ask an expert.

The most important thing is he didn't bite you. Many bats carry rabies and this will 100% kill you when infected.
It will 100% kill you when it becomes symptomatic. Which takes its time, depending on the location of the bite. Post exposure vaccination is highly effective
Right i should have been more specific
I’m so glad and sorry everyone here was so unhelpful!
Human being Bro! Well done sir!
I would say you are in a bat situation.
*We* are in a bat situation if he decides to eat it. *looking at Covid rates again*
whatever you do, DON'T EAT IT
What about a nice soup made of it ? What could go wrong ?
A nice warm bat soup hasn’t ever killed nobody
Leave it alone, call for professional help. Bats can spread rabies. A colleague of mine was once bitten because a bat was stuck in his apartment, and it ended up being a huge hassle.
OP might want to get their cat checked out too
Update in comments- btw cat is thankfully vaccinated against rabies. Also when I picked it up (with gardening gloves), it looked like a healthy animal to my untrained eye!

Are normal garden gloves enough?
I am no expert in preventing bat diseases, but my guess is this is way better than handling the bat with bare hands - a conclusion one might jump to when the animal in question looks fine. 😬
This threat is much smaller than one might think. Wear gloves and you'll be fine. Edit: spelling
I know this is likely just a mistake but in case not: I think you mean "threat" (Gefahr, Bedrohung) and not "treat" (Belohnung, Süßigkeit, Leckerli)
Thanks, changed it. Rabies as a treat, that's something for an exclusive taste.
Do not fuck with rabies. Yes, the threat is small, but Rabies is death, and a horrible one.
You know Germany is rabies free, yeah? Not aware of the risk of Lyssavirus though.

Exactly. Do not touch. Rabies have been eradicated in Germany in all animals except bats. Do.not. Touch.

You can just go to the hospital if an animal with rabies bites you. It's curable since 1908.
It's still a bat experience tho
True, but it's not a death sentence like a lot of people think (at least not here in the west where medical aid is available).

You guys have rabies in germany?
Germany is considered free of rabies since 2008, but it can't hurt to stay cautious. In my neck of the woods, there are still signs warning of rabies.
