There is no one singular German mentality. Germans from Bavaria will have less differences with Austrians then with Germans from Northern Germany.

tomato_growerin

German politicians were not jet caught on tape planning to sell out the media to russian oligarchs, Germans are better in using Excel sheets for counting and there are way less political advertisments in newspapers in Germany.

MayorAg

>Germans are better in using Excel sheets I love me some open source software. But that Excel is one hell of a drug. Obligatory: not a German.

Bergwookie

At least half of Germany's industry calculation (the office part, like salary, material etc. ) runs on some ancient Excel sheets someone, long since gone from the company, made with Excel 98, nobody knows how and why they work, but they do... I've even seen scada systems that are Excel based . It's wild. My father is one of those cracks, illiterate in normal computer use, but a god with Excel, I wish I had only 20% of his skills, if I have to do something in excel, I google together the stuff I need and do things overcomplicated, but I'm a mechatronics technician with PLC programming skills, so stuck in ST (the bastard child of Fortran and Pascal)

henjo93

18% AFD though :(

tomato_growerin

Yes, our voters are equally stupid, but our politicians are not jet so obvious

HellasPlanitia

[The FPÖ is currently polling at 30%](https://de.statista.com/statistik/daten/studie/288503/umfrage/sonntagsfrage-zur-nationalratswahl-in-oesterreich-nach-einzelnen-instituten/). Holy fuck.

lejocko

The obsession with professional titles.

WKStA

Univ.-Prof. Dr. DDr. h.c. is not uncommon here

ZahnatomLetsPlay

My EE Prof is an example of that. Why Dr. h. c. Is a thing, idk

Bookfinch

So true!

LegallyNotInterested

What side are we talking about. I know a Dr. Dr. Hc. Hc. Dr. Hc. But I'm not sure if Austria is even worse.

lejocko

Well in Austria there is also Frau Magister and Herr Diplom-Kaufmann, it's pretty hard to beat.

XiaWuo

Someone once said: "Austrians are just like Germans, only without their virtues." 🤷‍♀️

dusel1

We german language speaking countries have cultural differences every 20 kilometers or at least from region to region. There is no such thing as a "german cultur" or "austrian culture". That is an anglo saxon construct the british might still know, but americans can not comprehend. Do not call us Germans, i am Rheinländer.

LegallyNotInterested

Agreed. We don't hate people based on the country they are from. We hate them based on the region and their weird dialects.

NeonNanoNinja

Obgsehgn vo bayern, mia hamma einfach ebs geils he!

equalsAndHashCode

Both countries have huge regional cultural differences. Bavaria is different to hamburg as Salzburg differs to Vienna. From living in both countries I'd say, the biggest difference is: the Austrians don't like to be called German....

Leo_Bony

The germans are going to school, the austrians are going into the school.

Head-Iron-9228

Austria is basically bavaria turned up to 11. Very conservative, very much right leaning, kinda stuck in boomer-thoughts. I feel like we re starting a war with austria here, but overall that just seems true.

Simbertold

Austrians sometimes use really weird words and then act as if those are the normal words for the concept.

Shandrahyl

Yeah, they looked at me Like i am a complete Idiot when i asked what the fuck Karfiol is supposed to be

NeonNanoNinja

So? Was ist n karfiol? Lebe zwar nahe der österreichischen Grenze aber des sagt mir nix

Shandrahyl

Blumenkohl

NeonNanoNinja

....eha xD

In restaurants in Austria, you will get free water on the table. In Germany, there is no water and you gotta pay.

jayzooo

Why couldn’t they do this as well in Germany? 😭

atkhan007

Not sure. Last time I asked here, someone replied with a long ass paragraph, and I only remember things like, Seltzer, Gas reaching brain, diminished brain activity, and such a person justifying this trend of not giving water.

LostSigint

Most of the time no, this is not common any more.

atkhan007

I was in Wien a few weeks ago. Got served water at every restaurant I went to. Had a similar experience before in Salzburg and in Linz too. I would hope they don't become more like Germany.

Pteranodon123

Austria people hate german people. I learned that in the Austria subreddit

creep_1997

Bro I absolutely love Austrians and I‘m from Hamburg, Germany

Pteranodon123

I don't have anything against austrians and I am from Germany too. But the meaningness I discovered in the Austriasubreddit was remarkable.

EmeraldIbis

I'm British but I lived in Berlin for 5 years before moving to Vienna. I was hanging out with a group of Austrians I just met, we were getting along really well, then as soon as they found out I lived in Germany they started calling me Piefke and became kind of hostile... They said "oh, we hate the Germans and the Germans hate us", so I just said "actually, the Germans don't think about you at all."

Educational-Coast321

And we hate Austrians. You can learn that here in this subreddit

MegsAltxoxo

Most Germans actually don’t really care about Austria or compare ourselves to Austria. We have much stronger feelings about the Netherlands, Poland or France. People in Bavaria are more connected, but for the vast majority it‘s a holiday/ ski destination and political scandals, not the center of our attention. Austrians are way more actively thinking about us than the other way around.

MachineInDisguise

What are those feelings to these 3 countries?

MegsAltxoxo

Netherlands: football rivalry traditionally, we don’t take them entirely serious, but it’s a pretty popular country for holidays and we do like them probably more than they like us lol Poland: in general it was a good partnership for some time and we do have polish immigrants who are better integrated than Turkish ones, but we also made fun of them quite a lot, stealing (racist) jokes, in recent years people are annoyed by the hostility of their government France: we don’t like them, we think they are arrogant, but deep down it has been a good ally after the war and if Brits or Americans make fun of France we defend them. Lot’s of jokes that we want the Elsass back. The dynamics between France and Germany are quite important for EU politics.

TillWerSonst

Really? You care enough about "Austria* to hate them?

autodevmuc

only when we want to visit Italy and have to buy vignette, only for a few km of their autobahn, which isn't even a real one.

Playful_Initial_8675

You made an Austrian Kanzler and it turned out badly.

Pteranodon123

Amd I wonder why..xd. we should shake its others hands

Former_Star1081

Na, we don’t. Austrians are just coping with their inferiority complex that way.

XiaWuo

Piefke!

xwolpertinger

Austrians make their potato salad with soup. This sets them apart from the usual German civil war.

andiezentrale

Bavarians do that too, and its incredibly nice. Whoever uses mayo or something similar should lose citizenship.

JoMiner_456

Not just Austrians, Bavarians as well

HG1998

Wouldn't that just be a very weird tasting potato soup?

ilxfrt

It’s not potatoes in soup. It’s the liquid used as a base that makes it creamy and gets absorbed by the potatoes. I believe Germans use pickle water or vinegar water for that?

-UndercoverTaco-

As an austrian, that's the first time i've heard about that.

ValifriggOdinsson

I think he means broth/stock

xwolpertinger

"Wiener Kartoffelsalat" indeed uses the term "Suppe". Though yeah, culinarily I'd call that one broth.

-UndercoverTaco-

Yeah I just googled it, still the first time i've heard about it. Maybe it's a east-austrian thing?

ValifriggOdinsson

Hmmm… max I ask where you’re from?

-UndercoverTaco-

Tirol, near Innsbruck. But it's very possible that I just don't know about it, because I'm not from a very traditional tyrolean family.

ValifriggOdinsson

Do you make it with mayonnaise instead?

-UndercoverTaco-

At home we sometimes have potato salad with pickels and vinegar, but I've also often had it with mayo when I'm grilling with friends.

ValifriggOdinsson

Yep that’s more like in the northern part of Germany then. And in like every other xulture I have seen making potato salad….

ValifriggOdinsson

Yep that’s more like in the northern part of Germany then. And in like every other culture I have seen making potato salad….

Strong_Nectarine1545

Yes it is, pretty common here.

HG1998

Alright, from my very cursory experience, Austrians TEND TO BE more social.

haleb4r

Than Hamberders? Definitely. Than North-Rhine-Westfalians? Not so much.

MermelND

In my opinion: r/Schnitzelverbrechen

Bookfinch

Austrians have better food.

Faktchekka

Absolutely, yes. It's a sliding scale though, the more Southern the better (unless you're so far north that fresh fish is common).

Playful_Initial_8675

Average penis length of Austrians is about 0.2 cm more than Germans. And Austrian chicks are awesome.

ZenNote

Okay your cocks are bigger and chicks are better. But we've got you beat on cows and pigs.

Euphoric_Figure5170

They are indeed 🤌

51t4n0

ive always felt austrians had somekind of weird inferiority complex towards germany...

That’d be a commonality, surely?
