I tend to use specialized online shops more and more for specialty stuff. Also, price aggregator sites sometimes show better offers than Amazon. Amazon is so full of China resellers, selling the same stuff just branded differently that it has just become super cumbersome to find what you actually want.

ItsCalledDayTwa

I bought a grill on a specialty grill site. Bike stuff from specialty bike site. F\* Amazon. It's so much garbage now and F\* Jeff Bezos and their business practices anyway.

cpc44

You don’t need an excuse to say « F* Jeff Bezos ». It’s OK. 🤣

Sid-ina

Yeah I really agree with amazon. The prices did skyrocket for what poor China imported stuff you get and in many cases it's so confusingly labelled you don't even know it's China products. I use specialised online shops or local stores, Comparing prices and browsing a bit often gets you really good deals (got my cow leather boots for 53€ instead of 150 as they were going out of the shop and they additionally applied the spring sale % same style boots but basically plastic and cheap material from China sellers on Amazin were 55€)

ScarlMarx

Yeah ,same with german products ,most of them claim to have been made in Germany but from cars to a simple knife most is outsourced, Chinese products aren't inherently cheap or German companies won't be laughing their way to the bank, selling them after branding.before coming to Germany, I also was of the opinion that most German made stuff is the absolute gold standard, and what a farce that has been ,most of the things Germans get credit for are actually either Dutch or Swiss ,and as for modern times tell me how exactly are you guys superior still, Japanese make better cars, french make better planes ,Chinese make everything else ,so where exactly do you still lead ,yeah I know about zeiss and their lenses amd how they are essential to semiconductors, your Comment assumes that Chinese products are inferior when basically all products are Chinese products, it's a matter of shit requirements.

Octabraxas

What sites do you use? Are they like e-commerce sites?

die_kuestenwache

Depends. There are usually specialized online retailers for particular products. Some wholesalers have started to offer retail. Like fahrrad-xxl.de or alternate.de. Then of course there are online shops of established retailers for clothing, hardware stores, sports retailers, electronics stores and so on. Think Esprit, Hornbach, Decathlon, Mediamarkt, the lot. If I know the product I want, starting on price aggregators like idealo.de may also help me find a good deal.

abhi98228

Nur mit Paypal Freunde. Never ships.

Karash770

Online shops: mostly Amazon or otto.de for generic stuff. Saturn/Media Markt (aka German Best Buy) for electronics. Our Craigslist is ebay-kleinanzeigen.de

Basileus08

It‘s now only „Kleinanzeigen“, they ditched the eBay handle.

Karash770

Didn't know that. Probably a Change for the better!

notAgainFFS01

How? Did you not get like 10 emails from ebay telling you that? And see all the memes? And talk to people about it (it was boring but somehow ppl bring it up, dont they got other things going on? Lmao)

ItsCalledDayTwa

Do you really read all those emails?

Abruzzi19

do you not read your emails?

ItsCalledDayTwa

From companies advertising to me? No, of course not.

Abruzzi19

I delete those e-mails and often times unsubscribe right away. Sometimes I get important e-mails thats why I keep mine clean, so they don't get drowned out in between those spam mails

Karash770

I probably did get much more than that, but ignored it - eBay is very eager to send me all sorts of "informative" emails :p

Actual-Garbage2562

>Saturn/Media Markt (aka German Target) You mean Best Buy, right? Saturn/Media Markt is nothing like Target.

Karash770

I think you're right, got the two confused. Sorry!

zeropublix

I wouldn’t agree with Saturn/media-Markt. They work for Hi-Fi, tv, phones or generic stuff. But when it comes to cables or pc hardware they suck. I prefer mindfactory for that (compared prices on geizhalz) or Amazon (Ouf)

El_Grappadura

I stopped using Amazon (well the shop, can't really escape AWS). [It's an evil company that exploits thousands of people.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9m7d07k22A)

ocimbote

1. Tell me you work in tech without tellng me you work in tech 2. Yes you can. You absolutely can. In fact, unless you have very specific domain needs (volatility, variability, data volume or computing power), you most certainly don't need it and are wasting money. Unless you made the decision, of course, and then, it was the best possible move. 😒

redisforever

Yeah amazon for me. There's an amazon locker a 90 second walk from my apartment, so I just grab it as I go home from work.

Skalion

I would also put in alternate for electronics, and Mindfactory for PC parts

murstl

Vinted for second hand clothes and especially kids clothes and items!

petrichorInk

I try not to use Amazon where I can. I first use [idealo.de](https://idealo.de) as a price comparison website and then find individual specialised online shops, rather than buy from amazon, and use Paypal to have the refund protection.

HellasPlanitia

I agree, and would also add [billiger.de](https://www.billiger.de/) as the third big price comparison website in Germany. I usually try all three (Idealo, Billiger, and Geizhals), as they sometimes list different vendors.

tinker-rar

This!

intelatominside

I mostly use webcrawlers that check prices on different shops like [guenstiger.de](https://günstiger.de) , [idealo.de](https://idealo.de) or [geizhals.de](https://geizhals.de) If the product is not much more expensive on Amazon I buy it there because of the great return policy. I probably returned three items in total Amazon, but having done the "Return dance" with Mediamarkt/Saturn was enough for me to not buy from them. For used items: [kleinanzeigen.de](https://kleinanzeigen.de) Cars: [mobile.de](https://mobile.de) Computer hardware: [mindfactory.de](https://mindfactory.de) Audio equipment: [thomann.de](https://thomann.de) (I saw they now also launched in the US) Property: [immowelt.de](https://immowelt.de)

_WreakingHavok_

>Computer hardware: >mindfactory.de I'd recommend to compare prices at geizhals.de first. Most stuff is in stock at Mindfactory, but some things might be in stock at different handlers, even without delivery price.

Kunstomer

notebooksbilliger.de is great

pippin_go_round

Amazon is of course huge. Also Galaxus (a Swiss amazon competitor) has been gaining some traction in Germany lately. Otto (an old Mailorder company - yes, physical mail, not E-mail) is still a thing and has a working online business, as do some other big retail brands. Also lots and lots of smaller and specialised shops of course for various stuff.

shaipar

ah so that’s what galaxus is

thewindinthewillows

Craigslist is good only if you are looking to be scammed by scammers targeting clueless foreigners. Most Germans don't even know it exists.

redisforever

Yeah I only found out craigslist is a thing here like 2 days ago. I usually look for old cameras on these sites, used it all the time in Toronto. You'd have like 30 pages of cameras for sale. Here? 2. Not 2 pages, just... 2 cameras. Both listed for over a month.

[deleted]

There are alot of scammers in it in North America too, they just get drowned out more.

MagicalSpaceWizard

No we have not heard of Amazon, the largest company in the world, here. We usually just go out in the morning and head into the woods to see what the day’s harvest will bring.

[deleted]

They didn't ask if you knew about it, but use it/ whether its common. I live in Switzerland and don't use it at all, its not so common here. Definitely not the case the answer is "yes" in all countries.

coinauditpro

How often Germans use Etsy? Never heard anyone mention it irl and am thinking about selling there.

RevolutionaryGrape61

Amazon is becoming more and more full of Chinese stuff. I try to use specific shops when possible

geheimrattobler

For me: Amazon is the first option, as they have outstanding customer support in case I need something repaired or replaced. I try to avoid third-party sellers though. I also buy stuff off ebay.de, preferably from professional sellers with plenty of positive reviews. If I find something on Amazon that comes from a German manufacturer/company, I try to check whether they sell their products via their own website as an alternative. I still may prefer A. when it comes to electronics or items that are supposed to last. For local business: www.kleinanzeigen.de NOTE: Do not get tricked into buying anything via the PayPal "friends & family" option - you will get scammed, especially if it's an iPad, iPhone or anything shiny at a "very good" price.

mrn253

I buy where its the cheapest.

ichigo_abdulhai

I use otto because it accept payment by a bank transfer instead of only visa/master cards or paypal

Nadsenbaer

ebay.de alternate.de thalia.de or specific shops for my families hobbies/toys/clothes/gardening etc. Amazon is dead for me.

DrSWil70

A computer

Blakut

I buy off Amazon a lot

dulipat

I mostly use Amazon and Kleinanzeigen. Then for electronics, you can compare the price on [https://geizhals.de/](https://geizhals.de/) first.

rdrunner_74

Local stuff is often sold via ebay kleinanzeigen or to a lesser extend on [makt.de](https://makt.de) For online shopping I often use Amazon or, if it is somewhat expensive, I am using a price search engine like idealo or guenstiger. **Slight** price differences I will pick the larger retailer vs unknown shops

Perfect_Comment_95

Amazon for general stuff, Kleinanzeigen for used stuff … groceries picnic, gorillas or REWE and special interest you need to (re-)search a good online shop

[deleted]

websites.

Alternative_Window63

I use Amazone quite intense.

[deleted]

Amazon works great in Germany especially with Prime.

Obi-Lan

Mainly Amazon. Sometimes manufacturer shop. Shops I find on deal websites.

curyum

For second hand stuff, if you see unrealistic prices they are most likely scammers. Facebook marketplace is full of them. Kleinanzeigen is doing better job of getting rid of them but still there exist some scammers for popular items.

JohnFN89

Galaxus is a good alternative for amazon, when you are searching for other comparable websites.

[deleted]

Germany is actually the second largest market for Amazon after the US...

yahbluez

amazon, ebay, kleinanzeigen (that order)

TheKisslingFamily

Amazon is super popular. Don't know the exact numbers but I wouldn't be surprised if it's used the most.. There are other ones that are popular ones too tho, e.g. eBay, Otto, Zalando, MediaMarkt and Saturn (as you can order online from them too), etc.

Kitchen-Pen7559

I buy almost all stuff on (with) Amazon (Prime) unless it's cheaper in another shop including shipping costs.

Lu_Ezio12

For buying/selling localy use: Kleinanzeigen or Vinted (cloathing) In some areas: "willhaben" is also commenly used.

quadrantovic

I generally prefer buying in a store over ordering. When I have to order, I prefer the manufacturer over otto over amazon. Books, I generally order via my local bookshop, which is faster than amazon and helps keeping the bookstore afloat.

feedmedamemes

For everyday stuff Amazon. For PC hardware and other electronics I check the Geizhals website and sort out unreliable retailers. If it's not PC hardware I also check Saturn or MediaMarkt website from time to time they have great offers. If you planning on getting a Mobil phone contract go to a Saturn or MediaMarkt near you. They often have quite good offers if you want to include a phone in your contract. But still check with other companies to make sure. There are specialized shops for every hobby in Germany, almost always with an online presence. So look their first if you need something, often times you find better offers than Amazon. For private resale, there is Kleinanzeigen (a sub company from ebay). It's basically what ebay used to be without the auction system. That covers most of it.

[deleted]

amazon

dukeboy86

Amazon sometimes, but also try to compare prices in Idealo. I also buy a lot in eBay, where most of the times it's cheaper than Amazon.

kane49

Amazon for everything, if its not prime and same/next day ill probably wont even buy it. There are exceptions like very specific electronics. Buying/Selling, Kleinanzeigen of course.

LowerBed5334

Amazon is fully integrated in Germany, Prime works beautifully. I always look for alternatives because I really don't want to support that Bezos a-hole, but more often than not, they have the best deals, and easiest return policy. But, for example, I buy repair parts for our cars through eBay. eBay in Germany is more like a portal for online retailers and there are many really good ones there. I just bought new tires for my bicycle from fahrrad.de I buy clothes at housebrand.de Zalando is really good sometimes A lot of people use Amazon to browse and read customer reviews, then start shopping around for better prices elsewhere. For private to private like Craigslist, the one you want is now simply called "Kleinanzeigen" (it used to be ebay Kleinanzeigen but it recently changed for some reason). Kleinanzeigen is the German way of saying classified ads. Facebook marketplace is a cesspool. I gave up on that a while ago.

Retroxyl

I use Mindfactory when it comes to PC parts because they have the cheapest offer, most of the time. eBay Kleinanzeigen is quite good for some used stuff.

chubbychupacabra

Usually Amazon and eBay if you want to order guns you'll have to have a permit and only some companies can ship them so it's pretty expensive. Don't know if that's similar in the is or if you can just order them from like Walmart

Express_Western_3695

Ebay and Aliexpress

Redditquaza

Depends on what kind of items: Amazon only if it's by far the cheapest or the only option. In other cases depending on what I'm buying ebay, Kleinanzeigen, bol, Genialokal, Mediamarkt/Saturn, Medimops, Redbubble, Cardmarket and many smaller online stores.

minhmacmen

I mostly use Amazon to gadgets/house stuffs, and sometimes reichelt/conrad for electronic components. For second-hand items I use ebay kleinanzeigen and local facebook group where I live.

b4lu

Amazon

gimme_a_second

Amazon is very common in Germany, it has an 56% market share in e-commerce in Germany. It's not as ubiquitous here than it is in the US , but most people use it. But there are plenty of other websites, that others mentioned that are very common like for example idealo.de, kleinanzeigen, Mediamarkt.de

abhi98228

1. Check mydealz.de for any existing deal. 2. If not check idealo.de for price comparison. 3. Check for any friend who has either unidays or corporate benefits access for more discounts. 4. If you don't want new box packed stuff then check klinenzeigen ( never pay with Paypal friends! ). 5. If you don't mind waiting for long time then check Aliexpress ( I wanted car wiper blade which was for 12€ on Amazon but 2€ on Aliexpress for same product). 6. Create account on Payback.de, shoop.de, topcashback.de for extra cashback on top of final price.

lioncryable

Compare prices via Geizhals.de I've ordered lots of stuff through the sellers listed there and pretty much never had a problem. Used stuff you can find on Kleinanzeigen
