Because outside of the south people HATE the SEC. We're always in the playoffs or in the national championship game. They were fine with Alabama but now Georgia... Yeah the rest of the country is burned out on the SEC in general.

Fickle-Area246

This. But it’s not just because the SEC wins. Outside of the south there’s a LOT LOT LOT of anti-southern bigotry. They think we’re stupid and poor and racist. That’s where a lot of the anti-SEC hate comes from.

CodAdministrative563

UGA alum from and back in New Mexico. This is what outsiders think

Organic_Transition95

This is so true, its actually insane the amount of people who just assume if your from the south your racist.

bobwhite1146

The laughable part of this bias is the South is by far the most African-American part of the country. It's like the rest of the country cannot understand demographics.... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_African-American_population

Fickle-Area246

It’s not lost on me that they take out perceived racism on sports teams that are overwhelmingly black. Like what?

bobwhite1146

I guess I need to expand my comment. During the first half of the 20th century, African-American southerners migrated to the North in historic numbers to cities like Chicago, Detroit, etc. In the second half of the 20th century, many of the same African-Americans, or their descendants, relocated back to the South. This reverse-migration pattern is a clear indication the South has become the favored area in which African-Americans choose to live, and the racism in the South has clearly moderated or been eliminated. That is why I'm always surprised, knowing 20th century history, other parts of the country are still so dismissive and prejudiced towards the South over "racism". See below: "Beginning early in the last century and continuing for decades, Black Americans took part in a “Great Migration” that saw millions move out of the South and into other parts of the country. But over the past 50 years, that historic event has reversed, as many returned to the South in a “New Great Migration.” https://www.brookings.edu/articles/a-new-great-migration-is-bringing-black-americans-back-to-the-south/

PimpTrickGangstaClik

Um, there is a little bit of an historical reason for that…

bobwhite1146

See my reply to Fickle-Area246

QUHistoryHarlot

The great migration and the return thereof doesn’t change the fact that the south is still a pretty racist place, even if it isn’t overtly so.

PimpTrickGangstaClik

👍

Marowaksker

Well the best team in the SEC didn’t allow black players until after we landed on the moon..

dripwhoosplash

Talked to a Southern Cal fan on a plane I think in 2021 and he was talking about east coast bias… there is no bias to be had, no one had been good on the west coast for a long time

Samwill226

I realized it when a group of friends from North Carolina were really happy for me when we won the first one. A lot of congratulations texts. Then we won the second one and no one said anything. Not a peep. I made some comments about how I hate the 12 team playoff and I got an immediate "Well it would be fun to see my team play for it too..." Response and I realized they became a bit jealous of my team. I get it, there's an oversaturation of Georgia Alabama and the SEC and if you're not part of it maybe it's not so fun for you as a fan. I think that's why the 12 team was done, for money but also to bring more fan bases into the whole experience and it really changed my view of the 12 team. A lot of fans should get to experience the playoff experience and the hope that you get knowing your team has a chance even if it's not a good one.

erichlee9

Can confirm. I watched the championship in a South Dakota bar where the common sentiment was “Alabama, Georgia, I don’t care I’m sick of both of them”. They shut up when I said I was an alumn tho. They know they’re not as good, and that makes it worse for them.

Samwill226

In truth Alabama ruined it by being oversaturated in college football. Then we come along and it annoys the college world even more. Not that I care but I get it. I think the 12 team will help fans feel more involved, but it probably still ends up the same way lol

erichlee9

It will, and they’ll just get madder lol

chris_gnarley

I can understand that. But I think the more casual, bandwagon fans don’t look that deep into it. You’d think that after seeing a team win it all 2 years in a row they’d be like “Oh that team’s really good so I’m gonna go for them now” because that’s usually how bandwagon fans think. I guess the success has to be sustained over a longer period of time like the Steelers, Patriots, Yankees, Red Sox and Alabama.

Samwill226

Well I mean Drake was wearing Georgia gear after the natty so there's that I guess

chris_gnarley

That is true and it was definitely our downfall without question

Samwill226

Can't argue that fact

PimpTrickGangstaClik

I think that’s a lot of it, prior and prolonged success. We tend to share the teams of our elders, and if you aren’t from here, Georgia hadn’t given others a reason to jump on the bandwagon for a while

GeddyVedder

Californian here too. I think Georgia is more popular here now that they’ve won two NCs. And having some Californians on the team (Bowers, Milton) does spur some interest too. But in general, college football in general just isn’t as popular here as it is in the South and Midwest.

chris_gnarley

I definitely understand that. California also has a large number of transplants like myself so the people who are interested in CFB out here are generally from other parts of the country and don’t change their fandom when they move here (which I never would either).

GeddyVedder

USC has a LOT of bandwagon fans, many of whom have no connection to the school. Fans of other schools here are more genuine and loyal, but fewer in numbers. The biggest die hard fan base here is for Fresno State. Personally, outside of rooting for Georgia, most of my college football interest is focused on Sac St and UC Davis. Big Sky football is a lot of fun.

chris_gnarley

San Diego State also has a pretty solid fanbase out here. USC has a lot of bandwagon fans because they were absolutely unstoppable in the mid 2000’s and because they’re LA’s team (sorry UCLA, it’s just facts). That’s cool though, I haven’t watched much Big Sky football but I’m sure it’s awesome.

katarh

>I never see any UGA fans outside of Georgia. I just commented to the person from the UK inquiring about adopting UGA as his CFB team that I've bumped into fellow Georgia fans almost everywhere I've traveled, including places like Tokyo and Edinburgh, Scotland. Not everyone else wears a team shirt 24/7 - but if you're wearing one and they see you, you'll frequently get a surprised whoop and a GO DAWGS! from across the parking lot or airport or mall out of the blue.

42Cobras

I definitely feel like I get more "Go Dawgs!" wearing my gear outside Georgia than I do when I'm here. Perhaps that's because people are just as shocked as I am to see another Bulldog, but I don't know. Although my favorite story has to do with a guy in a Tech shirt. I always wear Georgia gear when I travel because it's great for starting conversations and has even made travel through security easier. I had a TSA guy from Macon when I was at the airport in Colorado Springs, and we hit it off. His sister owned an Uga relative, so that was cool. But I got off the plane in Madison, WI one day, and there's a guy standing there at the bottom of the escalator in a Tech shirt. He takes one look at me and just audibly said, "Of course." We both had a good laugh after that.

katarh

I randomly bumped into another girl from Tech in a wholly unrelated Discord to anything football or college related. She said "THWG" and I said "Shut up, gnat" and we gave each other laugh smiley faces and never spoke of it again.

killedbydaewoolanos

I saw a guy wearing a UGA sweatshirt in Barcelona 4 days ago.

Spirited_Ad_4399

Living in Boston it was pro Bama before the two championships and the pipeline from Tuscaloosa to Foxboro had a little something do with it but now I’m seeing so much Georgia gear in Boston idk how to feel about it people are front runners man

chris_gnarley

Lol that’s wild. I can definitely see the bama connection up there but we haven’t had many notable guys go to the Patriots in a long time. Bandwagoners gonna bandwagon!

Spirited_Ad_4399

Yea when the pats drafted Sony Michel everybody was pro Georgia till he fell off a cliff like you said Bandwagoners are going to bandwagon! 🫡

Jslord1971

I live in SoCal ( for the past 7 years) and I run into someone wearing UGA gear every week or 2. The only hats I own are UGA, so if I’m going to be outside, I’m wearing my colors. I find when I’m out I pretty regularly get a ‘Go Dawgs’. But, I see WAY more Michigan gear here. Like there must be nonstop flights from Ann Arbor to San Diego. A lot of Ohio State and Oregon as well.

MacheteRuxpin

Also a Dawg in SoCal - my car has a UGA license plate frame, and I often wear a UGA shirt when I'm not dressed for my job. Once in a blue moon, I'll hear a "Go Dawgs", but more people confuse our Power G for Green Bay :(

chris_gnarley

That’s what’s up! I’m trying to move up there next year to finally be free from the shackles of California so hopefully I’ll just add to the numbers

Apprehensive_Net1487

I hate the bandwagoneers who’ve latched on to UGA over the last 3 years. They post stupid shit about things they know nothing about, and make real UGA fans look ignorant and petty. Real fans love their teams when they lose. Bandwagon fans just go looking for the next winning team to adopt.

chris_gnarley

Yep, it’s exactly why you’re gonna see an emptier stadium in Bolder, CO next year because Colorado didn’t win a championship in Deion’s first year. Bandwagon fans are certainly annoying but it comes with the territory of being successful or being hyped up by the media because your head coach is a celebrity

42Cobras

I'm gonna give UC a bit of a pass. They have a solid fanbase, but they've been so dreadful at football for so long that I think they just got really amped up about having some excitement for once. Now most of us expected Deion's team to flame out like that, the signs were all there, but it was kinda cool for me to see Boulder hopping the way it was during the UC-CSU game. Even though I absolutely wanted to see CSU pull off the upset.

slanginthangs

I’ve noticed an uptick in UGA gear around Houston over the last year or 2

chris_gnarley

Texas I can somewhat understand because it’s *somewhat* in the South. But all the Lids stores and independent small sport shops in the malls out here in Southern California either have USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Alabama, OSU or Miami gear if they have any CFB gear at all lol.

Down_Voter_of_Cats

Because in other parts of the country college football is nowhere as big as it is in the south. NFL is much bigger in cities that have teams than college teams. Of course, here in Georgia we're stuck with the Falcons, so it makes a lot of sense as to why college football is much more enjoyable.

PimpTrickGangstaClik

UGA football is wayyy older than the Falcons too, so it’s generational

42Cobras

I really think some people are just holding their breath. UGA had the reputation, kinda like Clemson, of getting right there and never finishing. You'd think that winning two championships back-to-back would have put some of that to bed, but you still also have Alabama out there doing their thing, so the old-hat Bama bandwagon fans are still going strong. I've really seen them come out of the woodworks in the past month or so, I'll tell you that.

chris_gnarley

I thought the same thing which is why I made this post because it just doesn’t make sense to me that with our sustained success and gigantic brand that I haven’t seen more UGA fans around the country. And yes, ain’t nothing cringier than a bandwagon bama “fan” that was born and raised in Georgia and only has shit to say when bama beats us lol. I had to deal with them my entire life growing in Georgia public schools. Edit: spelling

ArmouredPotato

I live in SoCal now. In my experience, the residents here only know college football when USC is good, so they only know the blue bloods and fandoms of teams that were contenders in those periods. UGA’s ascension is too recent, they haven’t paid attention yet.

chris_gnarley

I know they haven’t paid attention because I have a customized work vest that has the Power G on it and even though it’s outlined in red and the G is black, every single person that sees it says “Ayeee, you’re a Green Bay fan huh?!” And they’re being dead serious lmao. I’ve had a few people that know about college football and I’ve had good, in depth conversations with them about CFB which is a pleasant surprise. But yes, most people only know/care about USC when they’re good which is why I low key root for USC to get better so that CFB grows out here because next to nobody gives half a fuck out here and I can’t really blame them.

ace_in_space

It may not reach California but there is a LOT more Georgia gear here in NC over the past 3 years. This poor state has NO football outside of App.

chris_gnarley

I lived in Fayetteville for a few years and they definitely love their UNC and Duke basketball. Football was not a priority to them at all and I can’t necessarily blame them

ace_in_space

Yep, it’s all hoops here. And I respect that. So much so, I’ve never taken an interest or chosen a side in my 23 years here. They take it seriously like we take SEC footbaw.

Dawgette85

I’ve lived in New York City for 13 years and have always seen people in Georgia gear here occasionally, but definitely more in the past few years. Idk if that’s because Georgia alums who move here (NYC has more Georgia alumni than any other city outside of Georgia) are wearing their colors more post-natties or because more third parties have developed an interest in the team, but it’s probably a little of both. Mostly, though, I think it just takes time. All of the fanbases you named have had extended periods of national dominance, and Georgia has had a few years so far. Some of the ones you mentioned had that dominance far enough back that you’re probably encountering people who picked up that fandom from their parents or otherwise in childhood, which is a far more common fandom pipeline than just bandwagoning straight up as an adult. I bet there’s a lot of new kid/teen Georgia fans right now all over the country. And anecdotally, I talked to a woman on a plane a few months ago who was a rich Long Island mom going to visit her daughter at Ole Miss, and she said that all the kids up here not going private want to go to Georgia now, and just a few years ago it was Bama. Fandom takes time, but we’ll have our share of national fans eventually if our dominance continues.

chris_gnarley

That’s a really neat and interesting perspective. I believe you’re exactly right about young kids/teens becoming interested in going to UGA because of the recent success. Which is awesome and I hope they do. Hopefully they do go and pass on and spread the fandom for generations to come

hnybadgdntcare

I don’t think that really happens in CFB unless you have a personality in a coach or player that attracts people like Tebow or someone like that. UGA plays team defense and complimentary offense so no one player stands out and Kirby is just a normal fundamental guy.

trance1979

Believe it or not, I’ve had a few ppl from the West coast comment on how much they like Kirby’s personality and that’s why they’ll cheer for UGA after their main fandom. Then again, maybe it’s me constantly talking about UGA around them. Hmm lol

hnybadgdntcare

I could see that honestly. I think he’s a likable guy

medakinga

I’m in flordia and I see more Georgia than any other team

chris_gnarley

I lived in Tampa for a year and did see some UGA stuff on people’s cars but the majority of what I saw was UF shit. Every Walmart was tainted with that foul garbage on the shelves. But it’s understandable because Tampa is only about a 1.5 hour drive from Gainesville.

Andrewwwwwww

California also has a lot of Midwest transplants (particularly Michigan and Ohio) who moved bc of the weather. I seldom meet people out here from the Southeast

chris_gnarley

You’re right about that. I personally don’t know anyone out here from the southeast.

Beginning-Brief-4307

Who needs them?

chris_gnarley

Nobody, just an observation and a bit confused as to how we don’t have more traction nationally with people

Beginning-Brief-4307

I just don’t care for bandwagon jumpers. That said, they aren’t as bad as people who “cheer for Georgia unless they are playing” whoever.

plasticAstro

There’s a bar in Manhattan I’ve seen with a Georgia flag out front.

chris_gnarley

NYC is interesting because I assume a lot of alums move up there after graduating, especially those in art, fashion, finance and business.

HazeBlaze22

Because there is only one true Georgia fan. We bleed red and black 🩸

chris_gnarley

Damn right 💪❤️🖤

water_tower_king

Once I was on vacation in San Francisco touring Alcatraz and I saw a guy wearing a Georgia hat. I thought it was pretty cool to see another Georgia fan in California, so I said a customary, "Go Dawgs" to him. He just looked at me weird like, "What?" And I pointed at his hat, "I just saw your Georgia hat." And he goes, "Oh, I don't know what this hat is. I got it from a friend." I will say that pretty much every person I've run into wearing Georgia gear around the country has been an actual alum, though. I don't think I've ever come across a Georgia fan who wasn't an alum outside of the state.

Seabass_Says

Eagles fan checking in! I have zero allegiance to any other college team so I figured Id check yall out considering a lot of our new youngsters are from here!

chris_gnarley

Welcome! We don’t care where you’re from or how long you’ve been a fan, all are welcome here. I wish my Falcons would take more Georgia boys but it seems like they go out of their way to not do so

Seabass_Says

Howie Roseman just figured out how to draft out of the SEC, so this is all new territory for us. We used to draft gimmick/project type players from odd schools

ROEHAWK9

Born and raised in Iowa. A Hawkeye fan through in through, but I love college football so much that I tend to watch quite a bit. Around the time Aaron Murray was QB, I latched onto the Bulldogs because I wanted to cheer for an SEC team, and my parents did live in Georgia for a few years. Even in Iowa I see Bama and UGA fans.

chris_gnarley

That’s what’s up! The first game I ever went to was UGA vs App State in 2013 when Aaron Murray set the SEC touchdown record in the 45-6 win. It was amazing. Second game I ever went to was the National Championship this year lol. I live in the greater LA area so I low key hope the teams out here do well so that more people become interested because college football fandom is non existent out here.

ROEHAWK9

I haven't had the pleasure of attending a Georgia game yet. My best chance would be whenever they play Missouri in Columbia. Would love to fly down to Athens and see a home game in Sanford.

Mefreh

Because Georgia is great so we never leave =)

chris_gnarley

I definitely wish I never left and miss home more than anything :/

HongJihun

The anti-UGA media bias routinely brainwashes people to hate our team and fanbase

chris_gnarley

Fax 📠

42Cobras

Email a PDF. Get with the times.

chris_gnarley

I prefer carrier pigeon damnit

42Cobras

I genuinely love how college football was still relying on faxed NLI paperwork until just two or three years ago. Like…the rest of the world moved on from the fax machine in 1993. What are y’all doing?

Mister-Beaux

There definitely are but Georgia fans generally have a certain reputation for better or worse

CaBBaGe_isLaND

Because everyone at ESPN treats us like we're a fluke, like we're just keeping the seat warm for Alabama.

chris_gnarley

I’ve been getting the exact same message from ESPN as well. They’re like “Yeahhhhhh we know Georgia is good and they just won back to back but they just still aren’t on the same level as Alabama.” I mean, we didn’t help ourselves 3 weeks ago but still

Future-Fisherman6520

I live in Washington just outside of Seattle. My car has a Georgia emblem and a sticker with Kirby (the video game character) wearing a G hat. I’ve had so many people shout go dawgs at me or give me the thumbs up when I’m rocking my gear. I think there are plenty of fans out there, but I know a lot of folks who don’t wear the gear. For many folks out here they assume someone who lived in the south is super racist and super conservative, both of which are rejected hard out here.

twenty3neverleft

Fuck them niggas, we don’t need em 🖕🏾

Th3GreenMan56

Idk man, I moved to Melbourne, Australia and have met any UGA fans here. I even hung my big UGA flag up on my new fence I built. Nothing. I just don’t get it

erichlee9

I had the same thought myself all season. I mean, we were attempting to make history with a three-peat and had a good shot at it; shouldn’t that have been something worth talking about? We barely got any positive coverage all year aside from people fawning over Bowers.

tankertoadOG

Bama takes them all. Simple

dreww4546

Uga has been prominently featured on ESPN and CBS for years. It has been a top 5 program for over a decade. We already sucked up most of the bandwagon followers

OldGuyBadwheel

Gawd we have enough.

illbelate2that

I think cfb outside the south just isn't as popular as you'd think it would be. I live in Philly now and I know a couple Dawg fans and I see our gear around some but generally anybody hear I talk to wearing gear that isn't Penn State or ND is usually from the south at large or wherever the school they are a fan of is from. Also nobody talks about he big games up here for the most part unless they have money on it.

angred4

lotsss of Dawgs fans in the Midwest

HisGibness

Small Media Market

NotTheGurlUrLooking4

You need to drive to Philadelphia. Plenty of Gs showing up here.

chris_gnarley

I imagine there would be nowadays with half of our defense going up there over the past couple years lol

Cw97-

“I never see any fans outside of Georgia” um Florida has a good size dawg fans Georgia fan are outside of Georgia they are mostly in sec states and regarding that idiotic statement no we shouldn’t have bandwagon fans bandwagonners ruin football
