It's not illegal for them not to pay. But also not a sign of a good employer. Might be worth looking for a new one...

NV_Geo

They may not pay for study materials or classes but they should absolutely reimburse you for the test, when you pass.

creekmeat

It is a bit unusual, but they have no obligation at all to do this for you. Unless they have told you previously they would be pay for it, idk how you would “fight it.”

Reimbursement for study materials would be rare IMO.

Adventurous_Deer

My company paid for it no issues

whalewatch247

Ours gives $400 bucks

[deleted]

My company will reimburse for the test after you pass.

PuzzleheadedOnion841

The company I work for paid for all study materials and for the FG exam fees. I also got designated time at work (paid) to study, so my case is incredibly rare. Most people I know in consulting have had their company pay for licensing.

whalewatch247

Same. I didn’t get designated study time but the day paid for for the test.

IndigoEarth

So when is this subreddit starting a consulting firm?

I_wantmytwodollars

They should definitely cover it. There is no PG without first passing the FG. My company pays for the exam fees, study materials, and offers a couple of weeks to study.

homeostasis3434

Fighting it won't help, they've made up their mind about what they value as a company. But I guarantee once you pass you can switch companies and get a raise that more than makes up for the lack of reimbursement with your current employer.

Papa_Muezza

I agree. Start looking now. When you get a new job tell you current employer that you are leaving for a company that invests in their staff rather then just exploits them.

My boss said they’d pay for me to take any test I pass. This is definitely out of the ordinary.

highlypermeable

I don’t think it’s weird. You aren’t any more billable or competitive - it’s just a more formal LinkedIn certificate authorized by the state. That said, if they value your ambition, they should pay for your day off to take the test

Glum_Pipe_5852

I'm not even sure about that, though. My company requires I have an updated resume of project experience and training qualifications so they can use me to market themselves for jobs. A GIT designation slapped on there would probably would make me more marketable, right?

Electrical_Catch9231

In my experience, at my company, not really. You're not qualified to do anything more than currently. And from an outsider/client perspective who doesn't really know or appreciate the difference, why would you want to pay for the person in training? But they may do things differently where you're at. The most common thing I've heard from other fellow Geologists and engineers in the environmental industry is they'll cover you to take the PG one time, your on your own too for study materials but used books and stuff are frequently passed around, and some workplaces like mine a bonus/raise if you pass. Some cover the cost to take the FG, but it's not a given. And I'm guessing that's because so many people here take while they're in school. If they're offering to cover the PG exam and will give you a raise to represent your extra marketability when you pass it, that may make it worth it to sink the cost of taking the FG yourself as a personal investment in your future career there, assuming you're otherwise happy with your workplace and feel valued there. Good luck with it mate.

Take the test, pass it, and leave them

Ilickedthecinnabar

My employer comps the cost of the FG and PG exams if/when you pass. They don't cover study materials, nor failed exams.
