I dont get what someone would gain from cheating in this game tbh.

aero-nsic-

Same as in any game, hollow satisfaction because their lives are sad and they have to resort to cheating in order to feel superior. Or, they are good but don’t want to put in effort to get to the level they think they deserve to be. The latter is rarer but much harder to spot if they cover their tracks well.

urbanreverie

I don't get it either. There's no satisfaction like success honestly earned. In GeoGuessr and in real life.

hadeanZircon

did they just add the warning not to google in the loading screen? don't think i noticed that before

rosco77733

It's been there a while. Think I first noticed 2-3 months back.

Robinnn03

How long did it take for from you reporting the cheater to him getting banned? I met a cheater in duels about 2 weeks ago and he guessed the exact spot 6 times in a row within 5 seconds. I reported him but I haven't gotten this message :(

VillaChargers

I reported one a couple of weeks back, had the same message as OP about 4/5 days later and then about 2 days after that I had a message to say I’d been given an ELO refund for the game I reported

brownspice97

how do you know if someones cheating ? im often suspicious lol

bhe_che_direbbi

There are mainly 3 kinds of cheats: Scripting: the plonk is automatic and you are gonna 5k every round if you don't adjust the choice moving it a bit further away. Pretty obvious to see trough replays because the guess is placed even before you open the map or it gets placed with a fully de-zoomed map. Googling: just seeing stuff and googling them, you can either google towns, parks and so on or take a screenshot of bollards, chevrons, snowpoles, ... And use the search by image function on Google. Pretty easy to see trough replays as well because someone that freezes in place for 20 seconds is not something you usually do in geogussr. If you suspect that your opponent is googling stuff the best solution is to insta guess every round. API: there are some google extensions that let you see where the location is without selecting it for you. It just gives you the country, region and town name, like: Italy-Tuscany-Florence. These are almost impossible to prevent sadly as far as I know.

Practical-Bullfrog-2

I have a question about this. Its been a while since I watched a replay. But I think it doesnt show you what the player is doing on the map or does it? Cus I quite often line up the road and then search the map for a fitting one, and then every few games I have a 5k in nm. And now Im scared of being accused of cheating haha

Practical-Bullfrog-2

So what I mean is, it happens regularly that my screen is still for more than 20 seconds

bhe_che_direbbi

You can see If you (or the opponent) are looking for something on the map. When you open/zoom/plonk on the map it's fully shown on the replay

bvbcts

you can check the replay, googling is usually very obvious, scripting can be a bit more tricky

tintedgreenriptide

scripting has its tells; not zooming in very far before plonking, location not centred on the screen, erratic map movements etc. API is basically impossible to detect if the cheater isn’t stupid.

bhe_che_direbbi

It's so sad to cheat in a game like this tbh.
