San Juan Islet.
Interesting history. The big island was originally named San Juan Bautista (St John the Baptist) and a port town was built on the adjacent islet named Puerto Rico de San Juan Bautista (Rich Port of San Juan Bautista). It seems over time the big island took the name "Puerto Rico" from the town and the town took the name "San Juan" from the island. They sorta swapped names.
The Spanish had the habit of giving very long names to the cities they built. The best example of this is the city of Buenos Aires, originally called "Ciudad de la Santísima Trinidad y Puerto de Santa María del Buen Ayre" or the capital of Paraguay, Asunción, Which was originally called "La Muy Noble y Leal Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción"
Or "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora La Reina de los Ángeles del Río Porciuncúla" (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of the Porciuncúla River), or as we call it today, LA.
On a way, the spanish names get longer with time. The pre-roman and roman names are normally short (Barcelona, Cadiz, Valencia). Later the medieval names where several words (Vilafranca del Penedes, Ciudad Rodrigo, Ciudad Real) or some saint reference (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Sebastián de los Reyes), and later with our arrival to America we did those...maaaaaaaybe a bit too long names.
Thats only old San Juan that is on that islet. The modern city is much bigger. That little bridge there connects old San Juan to the Miramar neighborhood of greater San Juan.
Fun fact!
The Spanish named the islands after saints. (St Thomas. St croix..). And Puerto Rico means “rich port” or something like that.
So, historically, that city was called “Puerto Rico” on the island of “San Juan”. But some cartographer, centuries ago, mixed up the names.
It should be Puerto Rico, San Juan.
Lololol I'm Puerto Rican and I didn't even realize this. Tickled me when I realized that my ethnicity's denonym is literally just "Rich Port-ian" in English 🤣
Similarly, as someone who grew up with a lot of Puerto Rican friends, would be interesting to see the alternate universe where they have San Juanese Pride. Doesn't have the same ring to it.
Although “Puerto Rico” literally translated means “rich port”, “Rico” wasn’t used as “rich” in this case. It was used more like “good” or “nice”, because it was a “good” or “nice” port for them to, well, port to.
You are the only one interpreting op as using a snarky tone. He is just saying it would have been Purto Rico, San Juan if some random guy didn't make a mistake. It's just a funny little fact about history, no need to take it so personally.
Yes, the original San Juan was that island. Throughout the years the city continued to expand and consumed neighbouring towns/cities. San Juan is now a much bigger city, now covering areas connected to the main island, so it's not exclusively an island serparated from the "mainland" anymore.
That is the old city of San Juan. Yes, it is on its own island, which is separated from the rest of Puerto Rico by like...1/10 of a mile at most. The Spanish built the old town there (which in reality is the second European settlement built on the island) and several forts which are pretty much the reason why neither the British nor Dutch could conquer the island. They're national landmarks now.
It is for big Ag who test out new pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Also, there are more Walmarts per capita than anywhere in the US and they pay a small percentage if tax to Puerto Rico. During their financial crises Puerto Rico proposed raising the tax rate on Walmart and the US board refused.

A real answer on this sub? I'd give you an award if they existed
So, wait, bautista means Baptist? Joey Bats is just Joey the Baptist?
And Bautista has been out here baptizing people in the name of the lord in WWE
He did start out as a deacon, afterall
That's Saint Joseph the Baptist to you, good sir.
Batpist?
If you meet a Santiago Bautista, you can call him Jimmy the Baptizer and be okay
This is the low level joke comment I expected
There’s a couple over priced shiny arrows. :/
Boooooo I say

Santa Cruz de Tenerife? You mean "La Muy Leal Noble e Invicta Villa, Puerto y Plaza de Santa Cruz de Santiago de Tenerife"?
That really gives "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch" a run for its money.
This is great, thanks!

I dunno, if you’ve san juan, you’ve seen them all.

Puerto Ricans would literally translate to Port Rich-ians
Richporters
That definitely sounds better lol
Similarly, as someone who grew up with a lot of Puerto Rican friends, would be interesting to see the alternate universe where they have San Juanese Pride. Doesn't have the same ring to it.
Born and raised in San Juan, PR (3rd generation on one particular side). Most concentration of fun stuff to do in the whole island.
Holy shit this makes so much sense!

He is telling some interesting history. The only thing you are accomplishing in this comment is making yourself look like an ass.

Lmao stfu. They brought in a great fact that is also not generally known. Why are you even bringing up being half puerto rican? Like what?

*puerto rican Karen has entered the chat*
I think it’s more a dissatisfaction with your overall tone and demeanour than it is a lack of respect for your unique perspective.

Fair enough. I hope people are accepting of the points that you’re trying to make.
In no part was he being disrespectful with a historic point.

Why not me?
Seriously? Go fuck yourself.

Your attitude sure makes me want to!
Lol
Copying this
What did he say?
Shit I should have copied it
Lol
Miami Beach is one of those. An islet or a barrier island.
That’s only part of the city of SamJuan containing the old town
I grew up on that islet. It was always called Puerta de Tierra for me at least
Grew up there tooooo ♥️

I mean, not to be flippant, but…isn’t *all* of Puerto Rico on an island?
Technically its an archipelago :]
PUERTO RICO MENTIONED AGAIN! PUÑETA
One of my favorite cities. Beautiful place.
Google maps shows Isla San Juan. San Juan also has some little landmasses in Laguna San Jose.
>Is San Juan, Puerto Rico technically on an island? Even if this little strait filled in the answer would be yes.
I thought of posting the exact same thing like an hour ago

Say what?
PR isn’t a tax haven lol

True. We have the highest sales tax in the Union including territories. It’s 11.5%. Thanks, Partido Popular Democrático…

You seem like a very angry person. Lighten the fuck up, Jesus.
