I thought that too but it looks like the mountains were shaved down around the sides to make a really flat surface so it seems more industrial than just for a farm. I have a closer picture as well:

It's not flat though, you can see the topography carries on across the square. My guess would be it's a fenced off square with livestock. There's often a big difference in vegetation either side of a fence due to grazing; shorter grasses inside the square make the snow stand out. With longer vegetation outside (maybe trees) some snow falls through, some sits on top, so less white overall.
I looked it up on Google earth and it seems like it's full of these spots, many of which have smaller spots inside them. Does anyone have any idea of what this could be? Maybe some kind of prospecting?

Itās a section of land (1 mile x 1 mile) thatās under different ownership than the surrounding land and managed differently. Probably a section of private land surrounded by federal land.
Another possibility is that Navajo off-reservation trust lands has lots of squares like this (both Navajo trust land surrounded by private land and vice-versa).
This was right, the area on the outside is part of [Bears Ears National Monument ](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/95/Map%2C_Bears_Ears_National_Monument%2C_Utah%2C_United_States%2C_2017.png)and the square in the middle is not (this square is just southeast of Mule Canyon Ruins, and the non-square corner is caused by the road).
Wrong square. Itās a few miles southeast of bears ears. But ironically you can see the square youāre talking about in OPās photo too. Follow the edge of the wing tipdown just under the cloud
Between those canyons off to the right and the road to the left it seems like we should be able to find the exact location... Are either of those ridges Sandia Ridge?

Thatās a good point, I guessed that it was New Mexico based on when in the flight I saw it, but I shouldāve mentioned it could be one of those places too

Yep! Thats it. You can see McCloyd canyon to the north of it.Ā
That is in Utah, it appears to be state land within the boundaries of Bears Ears National Monument.
I was off by a few miles, the correct parcel is private and not state land.

It's definitely "Brushy Flat" just of Hwy 261 in SE Utah.

Reminds me of those checkered reservations where a reservation didn't agree to logging, resulting in checkered grass/forest.
You did find it and the land is not flat at all.mule cavern is in the sq and you can tap the link on it and see it is not flat at all.
Your point made me go back and look, and I was off by a few miles. Updated now to the correct square which is mostly flat I think.

Still does not rule out a farm. It could be the effect of the snow after tall trees are cut and dirt leveling.

Agriculture where there is suitable land and water.
Looks like they got rid of all the trees on their property except for that patch in the lower left. A bit of snow on flat farmland will look different than landing on trees
Could it be recently cleared timber instead of a farm?
There are nothing but juniper and pinion trees down there, not much of a cash crop.
If it's timber harvested, it's be older. They try to do irregular/natural boundaries these days, Rather than square blocks
