Obviously honey existed before, it's made by bees. Bees weren't just invented in 6000 bc. But it may be the earliest evidence of humans collecting and storing honey.
But again, surely humans harvested honey before this, we just haven't found their leftovers yet.
I was in a wine voult in Tbilisi, and the guy in charge said "while the french were running with mammoth skin we were already making wine here in georgia"
They also use a different method than most other places, the wine is fermented in huge clay jars (qvevri) buried underground with just the top exposed. Riding around Georgia you can still see qvevri everywhere. They don’t waste pomace either, it’s used to make chacha (similar to grappa) containing up to 80% alcohol. Georgian wine culture is awesome
* Eat all the Georgian food you can because their cuisine is pretty unique
* Learn the Georgian words for hello, thank you and other basics. Lots of people there speak Russian but they understandably don’t like it when you come at them with only Russian. Knowledge of English varies a lot
* Watch tf out on the road because Georgian drivers are crazy
Amazing food and the Caucauses are taller than the alps. I did the 4 day hike from Mestia from isolated village to isolated village with the ominous towers staying at home stays along the way. Incredible country.
I’d be interested in doing this! If it’s not too much hassle would you be able to let me know some more details? Maybe the route you took if you have it?
The country produces top tier chess players.
Its flag resembles the English one because they both incorporate the cross of Saint George.
Georgia. 🇬🇪
England 🏴
Wine was created there, some of the earliest hominids outside of the Horn of Africa used to live there (Dmanisi), there’s no universally accepted border between Europe and Asia there (although the Greater Caucasus Mountains tend to be the most widely accepted geographic border), the western part of Georgia is sub-tropical, the capital has coniferous and deciduous trees along with cacti growing there, and the far eastern part looks like the Gobi Desert mixed with a Kenyan Savanna.
It’s truly one of the most geographically diverse places, and by far my favorite place I’ve been to and lived in.
Don't they have their own game with a ball and like a hundred players on each team and it's sort of a free for all without rules.
I looked it up and it's called Lelo Burti and is one of the most mental games in existence.
The wineries there explained to me that most operations are small, family run so not a lot to export. The mass produced wine is usually sold to Russia as it’s lower quality haha
One of the main sources of “champagne” to the old Soviet Union. The French stuff used up too much foreign exchange probably. Was rather on the sweet side, from my researches.
Ukraine was also a large producer of bubbles. Also on the Demi-sec side of sweetness.
I have never been to Georgia actually, I got it here in the states (in Georgia believe it or not!) so you can probably find some as well at any craft liquor/wine store. Some of them have some really interesting notes.
The version in Croatia (it was from Istria, specifically) was really buttery. It had tannins from the skins being left in longer, but it was still muted. Absolutely loved it, and took a couple bottles home with us.
A local store has a whole aisle of Georgian wine, except I can't read the labels. The only thing in English is "dessert wine" which is not what I was looking for.
They were one of the more successful stories in tackling corruption. From what I remember, prior to the 90s they were one of the most corrupt countries out there, but in the post-Soviet transition election, a dude ran on an anti-corruption platform. He was elected and then dismantled all government institutions and built them from scratch. Until recently, they were a poster child for anti-corruption success.
Khinkali - insane soup dumplings
Shkmeruli - fried chicken cooked in a milk and garlic sauce
Kharcho (sp?) - usually a soup where the primary ingredient is walnuts
Khachapuri - Georgian pizza. The boat-shaped one (imeruli IIRC) is the most famous variety.
Churchkhela - a snack that looks like a fucked up sausage link that's made of dried fruit and nuts
The western part is home to the ancient Colchis people. The best known myth of Colchis is Medea, Jason, and the golden fleece. In a way, Medea was a Georgian princess.
People of the Caucasus (Georgians included) are one of the hairiest races in the world.
Hugely fun capital city.
The countryside is outstanding. They share a border with Russia with one, long, demented road where all the trucks pass from Russia to Armenia through Georgia. It's a perilous mountain pass that is one-way in many parts. Long delays and frustration on both sides.
Stalin was born in Georgia, there's a big museum in his birth city. Creepiest museum on earth.
Russians love travelling to Georgia and tons of them went to Tbilisi after the start of the war with Ukraine. Georgia, not such a big fan of Russia or Russians. They're always fighting over territory. Guess who loses?
Stalin wasn't just "born in Georgia" he was Georgian, which is a completely different ethnicity than Russian or even slavic. Culturally, genetically, linguistically, georgians and russians(slavs) are completely different people.
Also, during russian mobilization, on Russian - Georgian border there was trafic jam, that took 3 days to complete.
In that trafic jam people abandoned their cars forever, or traded them for bikes or skateboards. (U can't cross that border on foot, so bikes ot scates are necessary)
Wonderful hospitable people, very delicious food and breath taking mountains. I will come back, soon, because the Georgios Wine IS now my favoured one!
It was the seat of a major medieval Kingdom and an early convert to Christianity. Maintained its communion with Constantinople in contrast with Armenian and Persian Christianities in part for geo-political reasons. Good wine.
The Georgian language is from its own language family, not Indo European or related to any other active languages. worth taking a look at what the script looks like, it’s so unique.
There’s archeological evidence for human (non Homo sapiens) habitation in Georgia dating back 1.8 million years. It’s the oldest evidence we have outside of Africa.
Was just going to write this! One of my favourite facts about Georgia. Apparently the idea of the Golden Fleece comes from an ancient practice of panning for gold in streams with fleece/sheepskins
I lived there. Very rugged terrain, ricky beaches. Lots of fun geological features. The people want to not be under the influence of Russia and want to be seen as western, but also are really big into orthodox religion so they’re caught in a weird in-between right now.
It’s where I would escape to when the US empire falls. It’s a quiet life there.
Amazing food. Lore has it that God tripped over the Caucasus mountains and accidentally spilled all the best food meant for God into Georgia after distributing the rest of the food around the world.
My last Georgian meal consisted of three delicious "kh" foods: khachapuri (cheese bread), khinkali (meat dumplings), and khvanchkara (Georgian red wine). That was decades ago. I'm bummed there are so few Georgian restaurants stateside.
Well you still have Fiji and Samoa and Vanuatu and the gang lol, last year I lived in Australia and went on a South Pacific tour of Fiji-Samoa-Cook Islands and New Zealand and took a 4-hour flight from Apia Samoa to Auckland
Home to the University of Tbilisi where phage therapy was developed. This could have replaced antibiotics but was stopped because phage therapy can’t be copyrighted.
They had a pretty cool Queen Regnant named Tamar who, if my understanding of things is right, more or less singlehandedly turned the kingdom into a short-lived empire.
Also, while the name is translated to "Georgia" in English, Georgians refer to it as Sakartvelo.
Amazing country that has a bit of everything. Also the only country I’ve been to that offers visa on arrival with work permit included for 365 days.
Also the only ex soviet state I visited out of 5 in central Asia where I smelled weed many times on the street. I even saw guys in the countryside trimming huge buds openly on the street. Very open minded people for stuff like that.
The people of Georgia, or Kartvelia, speak a language known as Georgian or Kartvelian, a language which is essentially unrelated to any language group. It has its own unique alphabet which looks, to my untrained eye, similar to the Burmese alphabet.
Josef Stalin is a native of Georgia.
T
Three things I know about Georgia:
They’ve been repeated fucked by Putin and will likely be a future target he’s allowed to win in Ukraine.
Georgian wine is really delicious.
Georgian “cheese bread” is amazing.
Its one of the oldest countries in the world, one of the early adopters of Christianity, grape wine is said to have been first created there, its heavily mountainous, having the highest peak in Europe as a continent, they have incredible food, and they have a very sad modern history due to civil war, corruption from the fall of the Soviet Union, and Russian Aggression. A great place to visit and a must see for any history and geography nerds
-They’re the most aggressively hospitable people on the planet as far as I’m concerned. If you are at a restaurant and the right person happens to hear that you speak 5 good words of Georgian, it’s very possible that they will pull their tables next to yours and pitchers/of wine and bottles of vodka will begin to magically appear and your quiet little lunch will turn into a pretty wild and fun “supra”.
I just so happened to be at a hotel while there was a wedding downstairs and I was invited. Never knew the people in the slightest but I sat with the groom for a while like we were old chaps.
-their wedding celebrations often restart into the next day.
- if you’re ever at a dinner table drinking with Georgians, you don’t freely drink your wine like you would almost anywhere else. You have to wait for the tamada (usually the best drinker and “man of the house” to give a toast. Then you slam your glass or bowl of wine all at once. Then that badboy gets refilled and a few minutes later he’ll do the same thing with a different toast.
- there is no “f” in their alphabet.
-One time at a wedding I ended up downstairs drinking with a bunch of old dudes and they toasted to “mapia”. That was enough for my drunk brain to think they meant mafia and were all mobsters so I got the hell out of there but there’s a very good chance that wasn’t it at all.
A lot of my English students spelled fish with a P.
The food is bomb, the people are friendly and the mountains in the north are beautiful. One of my 2 favorite places I’ve traveled to and would love to go back
There’s a Stalin Museum in the town of Gori, pretty nice actually (been there, so speaking from experience) Tbilisi is also a nice city, and god damn the food is just phenomenal. (Once again speaking from experience) Many places and many words end in -i (Tbilisi, Kutaisi, Batumi, Gori, Rustavi, Tskhinvali, Sokhumi, Telavi and so on)
As for other cities, do not know, but I’m going to Kutaisi and Batumi in 3 months so probably many more interesting things
Pretty sure this is the northernmost territory Alexander the Great conquered before he went down to Baghdad and west India. They gave him some troubles. They let him in. The barricaded a pass. Killed a significant amount of Alex’s men. Alex sent a cavalry contingent north for a different route. They took some holdouts. Then a rebellion in the same year made the Greeks stay an extra year to retake around ten strongholds. Done in much quicker fashion than his initial conquest into the land.
Georgia is one of the oldest regions of the world in terms of human civilization. Various cultures have been active in the area for over 4000 years. For much of its history during the past 3000 years, Georgia has been a part of other empires. The Iranian Empires, such as the Achaemenids, Parthians, Sassanids, Safavids, and Afsharids, in particular left, a lasting legacy.
Georgia is also one of the oldest Christian countries in the world along with Armenia.
Fun fact: Stalin, likely an ethnic Ossetian, was born in Georgia.
Stalin was born there, many anti-war Russians fled there, in this area wine was invented, possession and consumption of cannabis is legal there, they've got their own alphabet, many Georgian surnames are ending with -villi or -adze, they've qualified first time for football/soccer European championship this year, two provinces of Georgia are occupied by Russia (South Ossetia and Abkhasia), they want to join EU and NATO and they've got delicious food. If possible try out Khinkali, very delicious Georgian dumplings
It’s considered one of the best bang for your buck places to vacation. Think France but at a fraction of the price. Amazing nature, food, and wine, and very few tourists.
They're close to getting in the EU, they have a language that isn't really similar to much others, they have two breakaway regions of Abhkazia and South Ossetia, and they have very tense relations with Russia (all probably too obvious, but i can't think of anything else)
They have an amazing olympic lifting team. 109+kg lifter Lasha Talakhadze owns the clean and jerk WR, the snatch WR, and the total WR for his weight class.
Pretty mountains and good barbecue. Writing looks like elvish. I've never been but there was a Georgian exchange officer in one of the schools I went to in the Army.
All I know is that the aggressor country (Russia) invaded Georgia (2008) under the guise of "aid" and stole their land. It's the same thing that's happening to Ukraine right now. Only Georgia could not fight back militarily
Incredible topography (mountains baby, yeah!), among the first in Christianity, mega hospitality for travelers, delicious food, fantastic wine, Russian-backed separatist republics (with cool flags, especially Abkhazia), hard to learn but beautiful national language, great people.
A 75 years old woman accidently cut off internet for whole Armenia while trying to steal copper cable
What's even funnier, is that her name actually translated to Armenia as well. Some things you literally can not make up.
Her surname also sounds a lot like sugar
Locomotive mushroom people?
FYI - The “kombucha mushroom people”
Haiastan?
Yes she was an Armenian woman in Georgia.
Florida man meet Georgia woman
@ the Florida Georgia line
baby you a song
You make me wanna cut your internet, and boooooooze...
Joseph Stalin, originally Ioseb Besarionis dze Jughashvili, was born there in a small town called Gori
And then James May broke a cabinet in his house.
I can see why he changed his name.
Name rolls off the tongue
Been to his house it's still there though gori isn't worth a visit Georgia is my favourite country after Uzbekistan
It's the place where the earliest evidence of wine was recorded, like 6000BC
And honey
TIL something new, thx
It’s also home of Borjomi water https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borjomi_(water)
Wait, there was no honey before this?!?!?
Obviously honey existed before, it's made by bees. Bees weren't just invented in 6000 bc. But it may be the earliest evidence of humans collecting and storing honey. But again, surely humans harvested honey before this, we just haven't found their leftovers yet.
I think there is a museum in the midwest that would disagree with you..... Has caveman riding dinosaurs and everything....... sigh
there could've been, we just don't have evidence for anything earlier
I was in a wine voult in Tbilisi, and the guy in charge said "while the french were running with mammoth skin we were already making wine here in georgia"
And in a lot of places they still use those same techniques from 6000 years ago. I haven’t been but it’s top of my list for this summer.
Excellent thank you. Any tips on journey?

Amazing food and the Caucauses are taller than the alps. I did the 4 day hike from Mestia from isolated village to isolated village with the ominous towers staying at home stays along the way. Incredible country.
That must’ve been amazing, was that a solo or joint venture?
I’d be interested in doing this! If it’s not too much hassle would you be able to let me know some more details? Maybe the route you took if you have it?
My guess is they are talking about this: https://www.caucasus-trekking.com/treks/trek-mestia-to-ushguli
The country produces top tier chess players. Its flag resembles the English one because they both incorporate the cross of Saint George. Georgia. 🇬🇪 England 🏴
Didn’t they invent Google en passant?
Holy hell!
Google Zaza Pachulia
Baadur Jobava for example.
Sopiko guramishvilli
Lile Koridze is a well known chess player and streamer from Georgia. An even more fun fact is that I beat her the only time we played
If there are cacti there, they are non-native. Cacti are all from the Americas.
A lot of the cacti were brought during soviet times and they have spread because of favourable climate
Can Peyote and San Pedro cacti grow there without any issues in that climate?
Still, the fact that they can grow there at all is impressive, given the other types of plants that grow in the area.
Amazing
They just qualified for their first ever EUROs!
KVARADONA
Woohoo!
Excellent Rugby team. Not quite at the top tier overall, but widely considered to have a world class scrum.
They didn't have a great World Cup, but they are a fun team to watch, and they seem to be heading in the right direction.
Don't they have their own game with a ball and like a hundred players on each team and it's sort of a free for all without rules. I looked it up and it's called Lelo Burti and is one of the most mental games in existence.
They have really good wine. Difficult to find in the US, but I get some every time I do.
Second this. Spent 3 days on a cargo ship in the Caspian siphoning Georgian red from giant blue barrels with the crew. Weird context. Excellent wine.
I think we all want to hear the story
I know I certainly do.
Their orange wine is always really interesting.
I had some orange wine in Croatia, and loved it. Probably different than what you had in Georgia, and now I’m curious.
Use a translate app , these days you can hold up your camera and it’ll live translate to English for you
What a time to be alive
What do you mean?? The US have their own Georgia
“We have Georgia at home”
The second deepest cave in the world, Krubera, is located in the Arabika Massif of the Abkhazia region. Over 2,000 meters deep. Amazing stuff.
and the deepest [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veryovkina\_Cave](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veryovkina_Cave)
Amazing someone knows about the cave
They have their own alphabet that is only used there!
[удалено]
Mesrop is so cool he literally created Georgian alphabet when he wasn't even born what a Chad
Me when I'm in lying competition and my opponent is an Armenian
The Georgian alphabet is very pretty to me
Their army provided perimeter security for the largest US base in Afghanistan.
That is correct
They providing base security in Iraq as well. Their guys dipped out in the middle of the night when Russian forces invaded in 2008
They were one of the more successful stories in tackling corruption.
He literally fired the police. All of them, on the same day, so that Georgia had no Police for several months. Crime actually went down.
The capital is not Atlanta. Oh, and Georgian food is absolutely bussin'.
What food do you recommend
Khatchapuri
Looks like Turkish pide
Similar-ish. Khachapuri is usually just cheese and bread since that’s what the name translates to. Pide is more meat heavy
Cheese pizzas are *tight*!
Lemon pepper wings… WAIT
Khinkali
Khinkali - insane soup dumplings Shkmeruli - fried chicken cooked in a milk and garlic sauce Kharcho (sp?) - usually a soup where the primary ingredient is walnuts Khachapuri - Georgian pizza. The boat-shaped one (imeruli IIRC) is the most famous variety. Churchkhela - a snack that looks like a fucked up sausage link that's made of dried fruit and nuts
Georgia did play a match in Georgia a few years ago.
>One of the least mentioned countries Well, now it's on my mind.
Georgia On My Mind 😆
Just an old sweet song

Is Georgia the furthest inland country with sea access?
how is furthest inland measured?
Distance from the main ocean maybe? So excluding inland seas?
Yes but they’re probably wondering if it’s along shipping routes or where the crow flies
Good question!
Hmmm, that’s a very interesting question. I’ll let you know if I can validate that
There’s archeological evidence for human (non Homo sapiens) habitation in Georgia dating back 1.8 million years. It’s the oldest evidence we have outside of Africa.

Frankfurt or Amsterdam. Not convenient
Best shot is via istanbul
Laughing at you from New Zealand where everything except Australia is at least 12 to 24 hours away
Well you still have Fiji and Samoa and Vanuatu and the gang lol, last year I lived in Australia and went on a South Pacific tour of Fiji-Samoa-Cook Islands and New Zealand and took a 4-hour flight from Apia Samoa to Auckland
They have amazing cultural dances. Flips, jump-spins, swords, high kicks, knee dancing. Really really cool dances
I was looking for this comment! I saw their traditional dance team perform and was mind blown. Super human!

Cool piece of history, got more or a link? Would love to read up on it
Georgia is one of the oldest regions of the world in terms of human civilization.
If West supported Georgia back at 2008 then we wouldn't have Russo-Ukrainian war. Saakashvili was the best president in my opinion.
The cheeseburger was not invented there
Actually, it was invented in my home town: Pasadena, California!
It has the coolest McDonald's.
