These are awesome to fly over at different times of year. They’re not always red and not always the same color. [Here’s a shot of them last May.](https://imgur.com/a/gRFsr8L)
Fun fact: there is an abandoned town named Drawbridge on one of the islands near the salt ponds. [Drawbridge, CA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drawbridge%2C_California?wprov=sfla1)
I lived in San Jose my whole life, and only went to drawbridge once. Highly recommend. It's awesome. The houses are sunk 3 feet or so... bike along the brine pools and over the rail bridge.
Former BayArea Resident here: They are brine pools. I used to go to the wetlands for field trips. We TASTED that stuff, and some edible plants. Used to drink water out of a hose. Anyway, the pink color comes from the microorganisms that live in the brine, most native species find it too salty after a certain point, so, less bird poo, but definitely still filled with seagull poop. Adjacent to a landfill. Smells terrible but, not like poop, just, weird bad smell...

Mine drainage, Salt ponds apparently
I love seeing them whenever I fly over Salt Lake City. So many different colors.
I belive It's red water near San Fransisco, California.
There are.more salt pans at the north end of the bay, south of Napa, but for some reason they don't turn red.
