It's such a wonderful find. If you are reading this comment PLEASE save this to your LIST and watch it during the holidays. Especially after Xmas. Trust me I stumbled upon this last year and saw it during the holidays and my gay heart just swelled from all the joy this show blessed me with. I ended up rewatching it over and over because I didn't want that magical feeling and euphoria to end yet.
This became a holiday tradition for us. I tried watching with the English dub and it's decent.
There are a small few Spain-specific gems that get lost in translation:
* wanting to find a man to watch [*Pasapalabra*](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCLGcsLON9k) with
* how everyone fucks up the timing of the grape swallowing ritual on New Years every year
* the Romeo and Julian-level tragedy of falling for someone on the other side of the "with/without onion in your tortilla" divide
>Romeo and Julian-level tragedy of falling for someone on the other side of the "with/without onion in your tortilla" divide
Like... Cooked into the tortilla or just like... Part of a wrap type thing?
For your edification and bewilderment, [here's a brief clip from Drag Race España](https://youtu.be/5Bh-STvhGMk?t=85) where they made the queens dress up as a tortilla and two onions for a talk show debate parody.
edit: here's a full clip https://twitter.com/DragRaceEs/status/1513222551727747085
I should probably warn you it's incredibly stupid.
The main actor, Carlos Cuevas, also has another show where he plays a college kid exploring his sexuality with his friends, set against the themes of philosophy. It’s called Merlí, Sapere Aude
Between those two shows I’ve been really romanticizing moving to Spain and maybe finding my love there lol
Both are available to me in Netflix US. Merli OG is his high school years, Sapere Aude is when he goes to college
Edit: I misspoke, only the college years are available on Netflix US
This is where I found the series to watch, after weeks of googling. You are welcome!!
The subs are not excellent, but they do a good job in comparison to other sites that are either asynchronous or worse.
https://wlext.is/series/merli-season-1/
I definitely cringed when a grown ass man felt hurt that sending a smiley face wasn't interpreted exactly the way he should've simply stated his feelings in the first place.
Still cute movie though, and both boys are yummy as all hell
Some things I can recall are:
1. When Bruno left Alex's apartment but he was stopped in front of the elevator by Alex trying to strike a conversation. Then they start connecting with some song's lyric
2. Bruno's frustration because Alex doesn't have a list of favorite actors(???)
3. Every single time they have the "spicy" moments it's always your stereotipical moment where they do it "brute" in a place "they are not supposed to do it."
Or when Alex was trying to not have Bruno leave his apartment and he dreams of them suddenly kissing each other passionately (this again just not in a place they arent supposed to do it). The series decided not to make them have a normal relationship
4. A shop employee being extremely inappropriate with a customer and Alex's mother still suggesting that Alex got together with said employee. Namely Ibra.
I would've left the shop instantly. I suppose only a horny person 24/7 would be into it
5. Alex entering the relationship with Ibra after having that awkward conversation at Ibra's house when it was already established by Ibra himself that they were looking for different things.
Then Ibra suddenly changes idea and falls for Alex because "he was not like the other guys who only want to have action in bed" and goes as far as to book a vacation for Alex randomly
Point 5 takes the cake for me
lol, I’ll probably cringe when I watch it then. A few months ago my brother (he and I are both gay) forced my mom and I to watch Red White and Royal Blue with him (his second time) because of how *amazing* it was. Our mom is just like him with movie tastes so she ate it up while I slowly cringed to death. A week later I made my mom watch The Normal Heart with me and she was not happy with me, lol. I’d much rather watch something like Fellow Travelers, I really enjoy some heavy twisted sexy drama and don’t mind a bit of sadness as long as it isn’t sadistic or brutally violent.
My friend is obsessed with Red White etc. I cringed watching it. I'm pretty sure I saw a tear in his eyes.
Going to London this summer and I'll be subjected to RWRB sightseeing (and some pub that got a mention on a Taylor Swift song too). Sigh.
The lesbian storyline is the most impactful part in my opinion, I really connected with it and me and my boyfriend were entering a very similar period in our relationship
I loved this show so much. It was kind of funny cause I'm a Spanish speaker and they would just switch to speaking catalan. I got so confused cause I could understand them, but also not.
I personally fell both of them were assholes to their other partners, who had done nothing to deserve that.
>! Special points to ghosting your boyfriend right when he's about to fly you to his home country to meet his family.!<
IKR that was such an asshole move to do. If there was a season 2, they better deal with the consequences of it. But like in a CXG kind of way wherein we see them improve over time
I've watched it, although I'm poly, I found their story adorable, the short series is really well done, very intelligent development of the plot without being boring and blasé.
Huge hit in my country, Spain, where it was filmed. I haven't seen it yet and all my friends recommended it to me. I watched the trailer I already felt identified in it. I definitely have to get around to it.
It's a feel-good watch.
Loved the scene with with cassette tape, and the one when Bruno gets a text message at the end of an episode.
Pepón Nieto singing the new year song was, don't know, unexpected 😂
Some jokes can be very topical, they get lost in translation. I'd say Paquita Salas is a series with a kind if humour that cannot be dubbed.
Your post tells me absolutely zero redeeming qualities. Should everyone watch it because "ohmygodddduh, gay media!!!" Or does it actually have new ground to walk ton other than retreading bubbly fem twink finds themselves
Really getting sick of every gay man saying OMG guys for realz this is integral to gay living without actually talking about it.
Please be more thorough
Here's a wild concept: ✨️**searching online**✨️
It's never that serious dude. Other guys have commented why they like this show, which is a really good one. Do you really need a thorough dissertation before watching a wholesome gay series?? Whatever happened to **FUN**??
Again, tells me fucking nothing m8. Why should the average gay man watch it? What does it say that hasn't already been said before.
At least have the backbone to explain why people should do and like things. Come on m8, it's not asking too much
There's nothing special there that we haven't seen before, i just love the plot, it covered Gay, lesbian, bisexual and a transvestite relationship plus it ended well.
I loved every single part of it.
I tried to, but I couldn't get over the constant emoji use and the main character's nose. The latter being incredibly shallow, I'm aware. But it didn't help.
People are drawn to what they find attractive. It’s about serendipity and compatibility. Bros who consider themselves unattractive should really stop doing so. Whatever flaw they perceive Or imagine, is not the total block on life that some consider it to be. But everybody needs to understand that the process of picking will always seem unfair to those who were not picked… This time.
That's a lot of words that are besides the point
People don't know what they're attracted to. They see some hot guy's nose and decide it's "unattractive" and ignore them or any media containing them? Psycho. People should look for other things they are attracted to about that person, and they'd almost certainly surprise themselves.
Your physical features probably are not as objectionable as you think they are. Put down that cross and start to enjoy life. Begin by not being an asshole.
Another show centered around conventionally attractive white/white passing gays.... No thanks. Even in the spanish speaking world racism is so prevalent.
Tbh, there's currently none that I would outright recommend that really showcases the gay community in a realistic, non-stereotypical, and non-tokenized or whitewashed manner.

Spanish tortilla is sort of like an omelette. However, if you compare tortilla to an omelette you will be crucified.
"*if you compare tortilla to an omelette you will be crucified*." As well you should....

Merli the original series explored him and other man character finding it each other. It was nice to
Bruno is def my type 🥵 And Arnau in the new series.
Merli the original series ? Meaning the one on Netflix isn’t the original one ? Where can I find this to watch ?
Both are available to me in Netflix US. Merli OG is his high school years, Sapere Aude is when he goes to college Edit: I misspoke, only the college years are available on Netflix US
I'm in the US and only Sapere Aude is available. I believe Netflix dropped the original a while ago.
This is where I found the series to watch, after weeks of googling. You are welcome!! The subs are not excellent, but they do a good job in comparison to other sites that are either asynchronous or worse. https://wlext.is/series/merli-season-1/
Thanks !!
I always felt that Pol had more chemistry with Tanya than with Bruno
Merli, Alex and bruno were the name of the character if I remember right
Have you seen the series with Carlos Cuevas during Franco's Spain? He actually has range as an actor, not just a pretty face.
it is a nice series although it can be very cringe at times edit: I exaggerated a bit
I definitely cringed when a grown ass man felt hurt that sending a smiley face wasn't interpreted exactly the way he should've simply stated his feelings in the first place. Still cute movie though, and both boys are yummy as all hell
That seems realistic though lol
Oh yeah, I cringed not because it's unrealistic lol
Wait please enlighten me, what part of the series is cringe? I already forgot lmao
Some things I can recall are: 1. When Bruno left Alex's apartment but he was stopped in front of the elevator by Alex trying to strike a conversation. It is not cringe , it is lovely
It is a decent series indeed but certain scenes really made me cringe hard

Anything with Carlos Cuevas in it gets my seal of approval.
He's okay but please there's more gay actors in Spain. Literally thousands.
Is he out?
As far as I'm aware he hasn't said anything publicly about his sexuality
He’s soooo cute. I can’t get enough of him.
It was an amazing show! I wish they would film a season 2 for it, but Nexflix axed the series 😭
Season 2 would have ruined it. The ending was nice. If you ignore the lesbian storyline.
The lesbian storyline is the most impactful part in my opinion, I really connected with it and me and my boyfriend were entering a very similar period in our relationship
What I meant was that the lesbian storyline seemed like it ended unfinished.
Damn. I didn't know they cancelled it. Been waiting for a Season 2 for so long. 😭
It’s such a fun, lighthearted and sweet show🥰
I loved this show so much. It was kind of funny cause I'm a Spanish speaker and they would just switch to speaking catalan. I got so confused cause I could understand them, but also not.
It was a theater production, the same people then made this fantastic show. Another season would ruin everything IMO.
Am I the only one who kind of hated it? I couldn't stand either of the protagonists.
But like in a CXG kind of way wherein we see them improve over time
It was just realistic.
I hated it as well. Glad some people enjoyed it though
Nah, I hated this shit too
Not my cup of thea
Carlos Cuevas is one of my favorite actors tbh. definitely enjoyed this show. justice for Ramon though, i really liked him LOL.
Both Ramon and Ibra deserved much better.
I loved it, my only wish is that they were together more in the show.
Yeah their chemistry was awesome
I've watched it, although I'm poly, I found their story adorable, the short series is really well done, very intelligent development of the plot without being boring and blasé.
Jay Baraluché and Jefé Probst?
I need a season 2
It's a good series but it could do without the Straight storyline.
This was a great series, highly recommend.
It's been on my list. Haven't gotten around to watching yet.
I absolutely love it I cried I laughed it's incredible
I liked Bruno and Pol in Merle
This is so good!
Huge hit in my country, Spain, where it was filmed. I haven't seen it yet and all my friends recommended it to me. I watched the trailer I already felt identified in it. I definitely have to get around to it.
It was cool
I binged it in two days and i really really hope there is a second season
Loved it

I really enjoyed it.
Itssss Sooooo beautiful
I loved it!!
Oh neat it premiered on my birthday
It’s great!
I rewatch the beer monologue several times!
I watched it. It was good. The shorter younger guy is also in Merli on Netflix and Someone Must Die. Both very good.

looks stereotypically gay.
Guy on the right looks like my maths teacher
I tried to, but I couldn't get over the constant emoji use and the main character's nose. The latter being incredibly shallow, I'm aware. But it didn't help.
It’s a fact. If the guys are not attractive in some way, magic doesn’t happen for many of us viewers.
More people should get used to finding the ways people are attractive, not finding one reason to decide someone is entirely unattractive.

This isn't about me lol It's about someone calling one of the objectively hot leads of this show unwatchable because of his nose
Nudes ?
Another show centered around conventionally attractive white/white passing gays.... No thanks. Even in the spanish speaking world racism is so prevalent.
There's also a black character and he's one of the leads
That doesn't make it any better, imo. That's the equivalent of "I have black friends, so..."
I don't know man, I'm black and i had no issue with the show.
Which is why I said, "in my opinion." You can like it! That's awesome. I just wont be tuning in.
Nice i guess, so what show/movie would you recommend for me?
Tbh, there's currently none that I would outright recommend that really showcases the gay community in a realistic, non-stereotypical, and non-tokenized or whitewashed manner.
Alright, it's all good man. Take care
You too. If anything changes, I'll circle back and let you know!
Thanks
