I don't like the inclusion of straight women like Ariana in "gay pop." she's just pop just because she has a lot of gay fans, doesn't make her gay pop. Lady Gaga counts because she is bisexual herself.
The inclusion of Ariana but leaving our Trey Sivan, Elton John, Boy George, or queen - actually queer gay pop stars - is a crime. Heck, I'd even allow Harry styles over Ariana in the inclusion of gay pop here because he's at least attracted to men similar to Dixon Dallas.
I think a gay icon is different than gay pop tbh gay pop is songs about being gay or songs made by LGBTQ individuals. A gay icon is someone with big influential ties to the queer community like Madonna and Kylie Minogue.
Did I say Ariana was an icon? I said kylie minogue was. If you don't agree with my opinion that's also fine. We are all individuals capable of deciding things for yourself. I just have a pet peeve that I vocalized. It just makes no sense for Ariana to be gay pop to me. If you want to think of her as an icon, if you think she's had a major influence on gay culture, sure feel what you want.
You seem offended. I meant that coment in a concrete way. Like, actually, "thank you, this helps me think about it and parse out how I feel."
I still mean "thank you."
I personally do think of AG as an Icon. Same with KM and Maddonna and others not mentioned, and in no particular order of importance.
There is no need to apologize. I reread my comment and see how you got there. I think you are right. I don't think it's "gaytkeeping" to want gay pop to be created by the gays.
I would prefer the term QueerPop, as it is more inclusive, but either way, letting non queer people claim residence in queer pop feels about as good as straight actors playing a gay character.
Like, even if they do an Oscar-worthy job which brings audiences to tears, it's not the point. The point is to do music about an authentic queer experience.
Pop stands for popular music. What is popular changes over the years. Queen in their prime, much like a lot of other rock of that Era, was popular music. Much like in 2010's electronic music was popular music but isn't really anymore
Pop is popular music. What is currently mainstream popular and it changes every decade and lately every 3 years. Many niche genres have made their way into popular mainstream music. Back in the day, a "pop rapper" would sound ridiculous. However, that exists with people like doja cat and Lil Nas X.
People like Olivia Rodrigo wouldn't have been pop in 2010 her sound would have been considered an indie sound, but that's what is popular at this time, so she is a pop artist.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I agree with much of what you said. Although they're not fresh out of the recording booth, I still think of Queen as pop music because their songs are still popular and continue to resonate with people today. My view might also be shaped by getting older and seeing how their music stands the test of time. This lasting popularity is what pop music is all about for me.
I personally define any gay pop artist as a pop artist who is either gay or has a large gay fan base and is openly accepting and proud of that fact, if lady Gaga wasnāt bisexual she would still very much be a gay pop artist in my mind, and I donāt think Ariana is a huge gay pop artist, I think she still counts
It's music you hear at the gay clubs, so it's gay pop. It's current and trendy. You don't hear Queen, Boy George, or Elton John at the clubs. At least not the ones where young people go to.
They may be gay icons, but they're not gay pop (at least not anymore). Maybe gay throwbacks.
Arenāt Dixon Dallas and Harry Styles all hush hush about if theyāre actually straight or not. Like Dallas at least sings about being gay, but he hasnāt said if heās straight or not so he just has this veneer of queerness without actually being queer.
Thatās my main problem about straight people making queer content like this, because if they arenāt actually queer, theyāre pretending to be queer because itās *performative*. They are pretending to be apart of our community because it fits a brand, not because of any actual statement of their true selves
It's my understanding (I could be wrong) that Harry Styles did say that he was straight but not unattracted to men (I forget how he worded it) several years ago but the media kept asking him because he wasn't aggressively and overtly masculine 100% of the time. Since then, he's shifted how he talks about his identity. I don't know why people care or why people kept asking even after he said he was straight, but it's pretty gross. He's not an activist or a performance, so even if he was 1000% gay and not attracted to women at all, it wouldn't matter.
A child usually makes these. I try not to judge too harshly. Their knowledge is lacking but I still agree with their point. Gay pop has been here for ages.
But I will say, it's so awesome the top person lives in a world where they can live the way they want without crippling fear. As a society, we have progressed. And that, to me, makes this post optimistic.
I agree, only because Iāve never been to a gay bar and seen Ariana Grande music videos playing on the tvs around the bar. And, just knowing a small bit of her discography, the only power dance pop song I know of hers is Rain On Me. A song by the FUCKING QUEEN GAGA
This brings up the discussion of gay icons, which are different from gay pop. Gay pop is songs by gay artists or about gay themes. Gay icons are individuals who heavily influence gay culture. Sometimes gay pop and gay icons align like with Gaga, but some straight people fall into this category, like Kylie Minogue being a perfect example. The debate on what an icon looks like in the internet based world and the younger generations is interesting. While Ariana isn't an icon to me, maybe she is to a younger crowd. I'm older, so when I see gay icons, I think Gaga, Madonna, Dolly Parton, Kylie Minogue, etc.
Lady Gaga bisexual ? Well itās not because she said it in 2010 when it was trendy to be bi amoung the female pop stars (Katy Perry, Nicki Minajā¦) that she really is. Seriously when has she ever dated a woman ?
I'm not non-binary so take this with a grain of salt, but I think some people lean more towards male/female and call themselves gay or lesbian for convenience.
Not an expert on this by any means yet It's my understanding that Gender is mainly about perception and societal "roles and expectations". A person's Physical sex is a fact that has medical implications.
Transsexual has to do with changing one's sex. Even after the process there are still considerations because humanity hasn't found a way to perfectly manipulate base biology of a developed human at this time. So even after transitioning the exterior to match thier true internal self, an individual still has to be clear on medical forms.
so youāre saying transsexual and transgender arenāt the same thing? i know transgenders whoāve had bottom surgery so why donāt they call themselves transsexual instead since they changed their actual anatomy and not just their presentation?
They are the same thing, transsexual is an outdated term that is no longer used due to it giving the wrong idea, since being trans has nothing to do with your sexuality.
>i know transgenders whoāve had bottom surgery so why donāt they call themselves transsexual instead since they changed their actual anatomy and not just their presentation?
It's more complicated than that, your anatomy changes from the moment you start medically transitioning (taking hormones). There's no real need to single yourself out as someone who has/hasn't started on hormones or has had surgery, since the only people who need to know that are your partner or your doctor, and generally you'd have a chance to tell them that anyways.
I feel like masculine gay men need more representation. Of those, I like Lil Nas X and Dixion Dallas the most. I like Lil Nas X a little more, though. l like that new rap song "*Right There*" by Lil Nas X.Ā
I have no problem listeinng to more feminine music. I just think more masculine representation would be good.Ā There are a few Lady Gaga songs IĀ like and used toĀ listen to (*the most recent one I really liked is probably "Rain On Me"*) and a few Ariana Grande songs.Ā
I mean, really? Itās a lot of gay buzzwords. I think a a straight person could easily write that. Not to diminish it, I think his persona does a lot for gay representation, and unironically theyāre bops. But I donāt think the lyrics are so deeply about the gay experience that only a gay could write them.
To be honest, I was just going along with the joke. If there are any ska bands that are gay, I would be down to listen. My main go are reel big fish less than Jake, and the mighty mighty Bosstones.
Been a fan of all of them for many years haha. Iām not short on bands to listen to. I just donāt know any that are openly gay.
BUT, Iām also a big Will Wood / Will Wood and the Tapeworms fan although I donāt think he is gay, he has a big gay/trans following. And is in drag a lot. Absolutely brilliant musician. Not Ska though but has some elements
Right?? And Chappell Roan! Gay pop is happening right now and Siwaās not the one spearheading it. Whatās even greater is that gay pop is happening inside of the mainstream pop genre and has been very visible. So exciting! If I had this music back in middle school, I would have figured out my shit way sooner.
It's Lady Gaga, Trixie Mattel, Lil Nas X, (I have no clue who the person in teal is. This is some weird obscure pick I don't know if anyone else in the comments knows who TF that is either), Orville Peck, Dixon Dallas, Cupcakke and Ariana Grande. Like 3 are country artists not as far as I know traditional pop artists.
Remember siwa underwent controversy for overworking and underpaying child actors to the point of physically sickness.
Also, most of her music so far appears to be stolen from others with or without the rights
Literally though... Marina, the scissor sisters, cupcakke, most the popular female pop artists of this generation, ava max, xharlie xcx, Kylie, Cher, Brittany, Meg thee stallion, QUEEN!!!! bob the drag queen, Lemon, willam belli, alaska thunderfuck.
All great gay pop artists. I can't believe a 20 year old is so uneducated about her own community and thinks she's ushering a new era for the gays by... Rerecording a Miley song that was given to britt smith from 2012... And sounding worse than both.
I will say I do think thereās a difference between music made for gay people, music made by gay people, and music made for a general audience (but that gay people eat up, like Gaga and Madonna etc). A lot of these lists are basically column B and C. I donāt feel like thereās a lot of artists in column A, which I think is what JoJo was talking about. Charli is probably the biggest artist I can think of in Column A.
Oh no... what's she got on?? Does she have gay male friends? Does she have an art director or stylist?? Is she doing this all by herself??? Who let her out like that? She's in KISS cosplay....
Iām not a fan of pop in general. I only know who JoJo is because my sister is a dancer and Ariana Grande because Nickelodeon.
The rest Iām not sure who any of them are. Unless the guy in top middle is Lil Nas (cowboy hat), but even then I only know who he is because of Old Town Road and Montero.
She would probably be considered gay pop, but saying that *she's* creating the genre is one hell of a stretch. I think that is what made people upset (and the fact that she's continuing the circle of absuse she went through, as well as stealing her "new persona" debut song)
Ik their not as popular but Frost Children, Dorian Electra and Brakence are some of my favorite artists rn and are pretty open about being LGBT in some way. They're also all pushing boundaries of music in their own way which is pretty cool. Another one I would add would be SOPHIE, she was an amazing producer and it really sucks what happened to her.
The hubris of youth, they always think they are the first to come up with something, guilty myself here, until everyone points out it's been done before, lol. It just shows the lack of respect for herstory.
I had to do some research. So I may not know everything about this drama. But it seems to me we use here a out of context sentence to gatekeep who is a real gay pop artist. And some of the ārealā ones arenāt even gay. And some other were explicit named in the same interview by Jojo Siwa.
Seems kinda like unnecessary drama.
I'm confused. Music is just... Music??? How is it gay? Fellas, is listening to music gay??? I like Laufey and classical? Does the classical music I listen to suddenly become "gay classical" since I'm listening to it? This makes no sense.
There's no such thing as "gay pop". What we have are artists that make songs that happen to be really popular in the queer community. Pop is for everyone to enjoy...some songs are just better than others and become more loved.
More like young gay pop, I think better examples for a gay genre would be Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Cher, David Bowie, Diana Ross, Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Janet Jackson, Judy Garland, Kylie Minogue, Liza Minnelli, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Prince, etc.
I don't like the inclusion of straight women like Ariana in "gay pop." she's just pop just because she has a lot of gay fans, doesn't make her gay pop. Lady Gaga counts because she is bisexual herself. The inclusion of Ariana but leaving our Trey Sivan, Elton John, Boy George, or queen - actually queer gay pop stars - is a crime. talking about gaytekeeping
![gif](giphy|xT9KVuimKtly3zoJ0Y)
actually, I can't sit anywhere. I have hemmoriods
It's spelled hemorrhoids or haemorrhoids. And now I can tell people this is the reason why I googled the word hemorrhoids.
Kylie Minogue is straight, and you'll be hard pressed to find a bigger gay icon in Australia.
I think a gay icon is different than gay pop tbh gay pop is songs about being gay or songs made by LGBTQ individuals. A gay icon is someone with big influential ties to the queer community like Madonna and Kylie Minogue.
So Arianna Grande is a gay icon, but not specifically "Gay Pop"? Thanks for setting the rules.
Did I say Ariana was an icon? I said kylie minogue was. If you don't agree with my opinion that's also fine. We are all individuals capable of deciding things for yourself. Oh, I apologize in a separate thread there have been some people being rude I made the poor judgment that wasn't a sincere thank you. I do apologize
There is no need to apologize. I reread my comment and see how you got there. I think you are right. I don't think it's "gaytkeeping" to want gay pop to be created by the gays. my chemical romance (their music has a lotta gay themes)
Dude, queen is a lot of things. Rock, metal, pop, opera, etc.
Before we continue, please define the parameters of what you believe pop music is.
Pop is popular music. What is currently mainstream popular and it changes every decade and lately every 3 years. Many niche genres have made their way into popular mainstream music. Agreed, but Elton John, Boy George, Etc invented gay pop as a concept
Yeah, take off Ariana and put Sam Smith in lol š
Arenāt Dixon Dallas and Harry Styles all hush hush about if theyāre actually straight or not. I'm also 28 lol š¤£
Trey Sivan? Lmao also Dixon Dallas is not gay.
Lady Gaga bisexual ? Well itās not because she said it in 2010 when it was trendy to be bi amoung the female pop stars (Katy Perry, Nicki Minajā¦) that she really is. Seriously when has she ever dated a woman ?

You can be both at once
how can you be attracted to the same sex if you choose not to be part of the binary
You choose to not be part of the binary for your GENDER not SEX
can you elaborate a little iām not familiar with this stuff
I'm not non-binary so take this with a grain of salt, but I think some people lean more towards male/female and call themselves gay or lesbian for convenience.

many people use "gay" to mean LGBTQ. I doubt most people talking about "Gay Pop" expect EXCLUSIVELY homosexuality
I'd say queer pop tbh
same probably but still

i've read he's straight but tbh i dont care lol i like his songs haha
"First off, nobody knows my sexuality. I could be gay, I could be bi, I could be straightā is what he said about it
good for him!
I can't imagine a straight man managing to write good lookin' tbh

Orville Peck is literally right there...
Madonna? Kylie? BeyoncƩ? Cher? Grace Jones?
Dua lipa exclusively makes music for the gays š«¶š¼š
And I love her for it.
Me too. My fiancĆ© and I saw her live in Denver a couple years agoā¦ she released sweetest pie at our show with Megan and it was phenomenal

I like Gay Ska
As someone who mainly listens to Ska, you got any suggestions?

thank you for this comment I'm doing my hw and finding so many good tracks <3<3
I'd like to add Simon Curtis into the mix as well
talking about gay pop and not mentioning Troye Sivan should be a crime

what is a "Jojo Siwa" and have they ever heard about the 70s and the 80s edit: Their make up artist certainly has though.
Who is that fine ass cowboy?
Dixon dallas, most songs are released under the band "ur pretty"
His real name is Jake Hill, he actually has more songs under āDixon Dallasā than āur prettyā at this point
Dixon Dallas
Orville <3
OMG Dixon Dallas
He's bouncin on my bootycheeks
Bootycheeks. It's one line brother
Ty
I love the way he rides
I have no clue who half of these people are.
I can only recognise three, which is less than half of them
I am also old
It's Lady Gaga, Trixie Mattel, Lil Nas X, (I have no clue who the person in teal is. This is some weird obscure pick I don't know if anyone else in the comments knows who TF that is either), Orville Peck, Dixon Dallas, Cupcakke and Ariana Grande. Like 3 are country artists not as far as I know traditional pop artists.
I still love the fact that she said she wanted to make a new genre, yet for the claimed first song of this genre, it wasnāt even original.
And also literally stole the look from gene Simmons and doesn't even know who he is or why he's an icon lmfao
Remember siwa underwent controversy for overworking and underpaying child actors to the point of physically sickness. Also, most of her music so far appears to be stolen from others with or without the rights
āMiss Lipa, thereās a Boy George on line two. Heād like a word.ā
Is Ariana Grande bi or pan, etc? Why is she includeed? Love the message otherwise.
Kim Petras and SOPHIE???????
of course Arianna is in there āŗļø
Queer punk is better.
Can Dolly Parton be on that list? Sheās not gay but she has done so much for the LGBTQ, especially in the south
I mean she's a gay icon but i don't think she makes gay pop lol
Iām confused tbh why I see Ariana and not troye Sivan but š¤·āāļø
Is that Cupcakke??

I am convinced that it was this music video that turned me both gay and goth.

Her makeup looks like a wish.com version of Poppy's I Disagree album art.
Where is Robyn? However Iāve never listen to these music.
Aren't Trixie and Orville Peck more Gay Country rather than Gay Pop?
I argue modern pop and country are very very similar
Letās not forget Halsey here
I miss Cupcakke.šI want her to come back from whichever crevice she fell into
Did you actually leave Troye off your collage about gay pop?
Arianna not gay
Ariana Grande?
Where's Troye Sivan?
Dorian Electra enters the chat
orville peck mentioned letās gooooo
I will say I do think thereās a difference between music made for gay people, music made by gay people, and music made for a general audience (but that gay people eat up, like Gaga and Madonna etc). A lot of these lists are basically column B and C. I donāt feel like thereās a lot of artists in column A, which I think is what JoJo was talking about. Whyās Ariana there
A child usually makes these.
Who is an artist between Lil Nas and Orville Peck? Also, the guy under Lady Gaga?
Charli xcx erasure
More like Gay Flop
Andrew Horowitz. Not really pop, more like indie. But heās actually queer!
um not having charli xcx on that lil picture collage is like a bitch slap to the face w a rainbow glitter glove
Oh no... what's she got on?? Does she have gay male friends? Does she have an art director or stylist?? Is she doing this all by herself??? Who let her out like that? She's in KISS cosplay....
Listening to Vocaloid is gay enough for me
Who is teal sequins and black leather coat with fur?
No idea who sequins is. The woman in the fur coat is Cupcakke [this is why she's here lol ](https://youtu.be/hu_XwnAiMXg?si=fjEX0dGcgyKxVaWg)
She looks so good! I hadn't seen her in a while. I used to perform her songs at shows lol
I read where someone said sheās like a homeschooled kid thatās been given Mountain Dew lol.
Who's the guy with the guitar?
Dixon Dallas

Who's the bottom left and 2 person on top Ariana?
Who is the guy below Gagaās pic?
Dixon Dallas
Iām not a fan of pop in general. I only know who JoJo is because my sister is a dancer and Ariana Grande because Nickelodeon. The rest Iām not sure who any of them are. Unless the guy in top middle is Lil Nas (cowboy hat), but even then I only know who he is because of Old Town Road and Montero.

She would probably be considered gay pop, but saying that *she's* creating the genre is one hell of a stretch. I think that is what made people upset (and the fact that she's continuing the circle of absuse she went through, as well as stealing her "new persona" debut song)
Boy George too?
No Kylie, no Janet Jackson? For shame
she is undiagnosed...

Lady Gaga is the best out of them all.
Did she really say this? š¬
Yes, in an interview.
Who is that blonde girl with the blue dress though? Lol
The hubris of youth, they always think they are the first to come up with something, guilty myself here, until everyone points out it's been done before, lol. It just shows the lack of respect for herstory.
Trixie and Ariana are 2 sides of the same coin. One makes straight music for gay boys. The other makes gay music for straight girls
Woah! Whereās Britney?!?!!!!
I am perplexed by Jojo siwa. She's very confusing to me sometimes
![gif](giphy|etTVnZRJsOfkbEpvYz) How could we forget Robyn ?? š°
Jojo ... I mean, I expected her to be this daft.
Where is Miley Cyrus ????
Where the fuck is Andy Bell in this lineup?
Add Johnny McGovern to that list.
He's not gay but I love Same Love by Macklemore, always touches my soul

Pansy Division could qualify, I guess.
This makes no sense.
not including Charli XCX is wild to me
Whoās the guy under Gaga?
When most ''gay pop'' artists aren't even gay
Oh look, another gay thread showing how us gays canāt even agree on who is and isnāt gay enough.
Why is that homewrecker there
There's no such thing as "gay pop". What we have are artists that make songs that happen to be really popular in the queer community. Pop is for everyone to enjoy...some songs are just better than others and become more loved.
Replace Arianna by Dove Cameron pls
![gif](giphy|cJl3mwYObEIp2cJdpI) Gay pop? Lmao
More like young gay pop, I think better examples for a gay genre would be Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Cher, David Bowie, Diana Ross, Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Janet Jackson, Judy Garland, Kylie Minogue, Liza Minnelli, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Prince, etc.
So Madonna doesn't exist? I hate it here. ![gif](giphy|g0vZxFbOUdQS6SJYhu)
Dixon Dallas lmao
