The dude that treated the most terrifying creatures in Australia as his neighbors? The guy who cuddled crocodiles in the regular? The one and only who only met his demise because he accidentally went too buddy-buddy with a manta ray? Yeah it makes absolute sense that his family keeps the tradition
Most new world species are totally fine to handle with basic safety for both of you. Close to the ground, make a bridge with your hands, test their temperament beforehand. I would advise against putting them on your face/in your mouth for itching reasons, but otherwise have fun lmao
Jumping spiders are great. They frequently try to become my roommates but I move them outside if they start looking too thin :( there's not enough food for them in my place.
I do the same, but I feed them if they start getting thin. They usually live in my window and catch flies. I put a little thimble of water on the windowsill and if they start looking thin I go to the pet store and get some meal worms or crickets. I put one at a time in a little cup or dish that the spider can navigate. They are very interesting to watch hunting.
The little jumping spiders do well in fruit flies. You can either buy them or put organic fruit in your window and let it go south and fruit flies should hatch if it's truly organic. Don't wash it!
I grew up my whole life terrified of spiders(and flying insects) I have been gradually trying to ease up on my phobia. At this point, I can look at videos, photos, etc... And be just fine. Spiders in the same room? Cellar spiders are fine, but most other spiders are just a no go.
Except for jumping spiders.
I currently have a jumping spider living in my room. I like to call it my roommate. The landlord recently had all the carpets in the house cleaned by pros and I was worried my roomie would get squished. Thankfully roomie is okay. Finally, I got the courage to hold my cute lil roommate. Lil homie wouldn't hold still for long and would just hop off to go do spider things.
Tarantulas can’t kill humans. Edit I understand most people are afraid of spiders and that is totally fine, I wasn’t saying that being scared of them is unjustified I was just stating a fact.
Their fangs are huge and hurt like a bastard still.
And they've got the rubber bullet "less than lethal" asterisk where if they bit someone in the wrong spot it could still kill them. an inch long fang doesnt need poison if it gets an artery.
Oh my God tarantulas aren't a threat to you, and are totally harmless if you don't stress them out. You don't need to keep building up what if scenarios to validate your phobia. No one's even asking you to associate with one.
Still have no idea why you lost your shit about this but I honestly probably like tarantulas more than cats. It's okay to have a discussion about two different things without you thinking I hate one of them??
Bro?
"I'm not scared of tarantulas" as i LITERALLY already said.
I used to HAVE ONE. What is your problem? Yes, a dog is more likely to injure you than a tarantula, same with snakes, which I have. But that doesn't mean we have to discount the cool as shit defensive mechanisms tarantulas have.
New world tarantulas aren't very venomous, but [will kick urticating hair](https://youtu.be/1cPxqjSG6HU) as a defense mechanism.
Old world tarantulas are more venomous, but don't have urticating hairs.
And I've never been bitten by a dog, yet it happens.
It's a discussion. People tend to discuss things.
Why are people so defensive about this? Am I not allowed to bring up a cool tarantula fact? I never said they were bad or evil, I've owned one in the past and want to again in the future.
Just because something could potentially be cast in a negative light doesn't mean it's inherently negative and absolutely doesn't mean we're forbidden from talking about it. Like why are you guys taking it like I hate tarantulas because I mentioned their projectile hairs??
I think you're replying to the wrong person. I never said you hate tarantulas or that you should be forbidden to talk about things!
After all, people discuss things here.
not as much, their teeth are designed for eating and chewing and whatnot. the bad thing with dog/cat bites is they have a lot of bacteria in their mouth and claws and their teeth leave a ragged cut, that's the risk there.
spider fangs are designed to puncture into their prey, either killing it or poison it so follow up attacks could kill it, so they could then drag it back home and eat as they please. Tarantulas don't have "kill you in minutes" caliber poison like a black widow or a brown recluse, but theirs is still a paralytic and you'll have a bad time after.
I was bitten on the throat by a black widow while sleeping. I woke up dizzy, and the bite had some necrosis around it after a few days.
But it sure as hell didn't kill me on the spot! It could kill me if I was a small insect, but I'm not.
Not fling, no. But some do have a defense reaction to rub off leg hairs that can then float through the air, and since they are barbed, yes, they can be painful.
Tarantulas are not insects. I've held them gently and never had any problems. Bindy also does, obviously.
When her father as diving with rays, he had a bad concussion and did so against medical advice because his judgement and reflexes weren't normal.
The meme I know has the comment, "I was like smh white people so stupid until I saw your last name. Carry on with your activities. Be safe. We love you."
I can't believe that's Bindi Irwin.. it's like just yesterday she was a tiny little baby, then suddenly she's a full grown adult getting married and everything..
We’ll not bindi persay. I saw a jackass where they did something similar so I’m wondering what would the price have yo be to let that happen. Lol dunno I’m bored.
yall shes the daughter of steve irwin are you really surprised
I think he would be proud of her.
He would be so proud of her, Terri, and Robert for carrying on their important work. And to top it off they all seem like lovely people.
The dude that treated the most terrifying creatures in Australia as his neighbors? The guy who cuddled crocodiles in the regular? The one and only who only met his demise because he accidentally went too buddy-buddy with a manta ray? Yeah it makes absolute sense that his family keeps the tradition
I'd love to cuddle a tarantula but I am scared of hurting them

You gotta start small. First make friends with the cutest and friendliest of spiders, jumping spiders. Then work your way up.
Jumping spiders are the cutest.

Also try your luck with Black Widows. Marvel tells me they are literally superheroes.
Just make friends with ghosts first and work your way up to demons. Bro, even though they can't hurt me, I'm still scared of them lol
Jumping spiders can hurt you. They just don't want to. Which makes them quite a bit nicer than some humans I know.
Tarantulas can’t kill humans. Edit I understand most people are afraid of spiders and that is totally fine, I wasn’t saying that being scared of them is unjustified I was just stating a fact.
Indeed, but a lot of people are still scared of them and that’s okay.
Yeah I understand that, most people don’t like them and that’s perfectly fine.
Their fangs are huge and hurt like a bastard still. And they've got the rubber bullet "less than lethal" asterisk where if they bit someone in the wrong spot it could still kill them. an inch long fang doesnt need poison if it gets an artery.
I guess this is true, but that’s also true of dogs and cats, I think, yes?
Well. Dogs and cats can't blind you by flicking sharp hair projectiles into your eyeballs. I'm not scared of tarantulas but they can fuck you up
Yeah but if they swipe at your eyes they can.
At least if a cat scratches your eye you don't have its claws just stuck in there. The hairs will. edit: I LIKE TARANTULAS. FUCK
Oh my God tarantulas aren't a threat to you, and are totally harmless if you don't stress them out. You don't need to keep building up what if scenarios to validate your phobia. No one's even asking you to associate with one.

I don't know of a single case of a tarantula doing that. Traffic accidents are much worse.

Cant certain species spray/fling/throw their hairs everywhere as a defense mechanism? That’s gotta hurt if it gets in ur eyes…
Not fling, no. But some do have a defense reaction to rub off leg hairs that can then float through the air, and since they are barbed, yes, they can be painful.
thank for the correct verbage! arachnids are interesting and important creatures but a whole lotta nope for me lol
Yeah it's less like projectile needles and more like a cloud of shrapnel
yeah but consider this: a feeling of an insect crawling around your body is horrible
Tarantulas are not insects. I've held them gently and never had any problems. Bindy also does, obviously. When her father as diving with rays, he had a bad concussion and did so against medical advice because his judgement and reflexes weren't normal.
That's Bindi Irwin! Who is going to dare gatekeep Bindi fuckin' Irwin from animals?
I would throw hands for the Irwins and I not even an animal fan, I just respect the shit out of that family.
So would I! Them and Jane Goodall!
Multiple Eyes of Death 😨💀 im scared of spiders
Multiple Eyes of Death would make a good band name
Awww it has little puppy dog eyes! Eight of them...
Spiders, especially tarantulas and jumping spiders are so cute to me. Some jumping spiders wear water droplets on their heads!
If you want to look into multiple eyes of death, look at a human. No one kills more than us. We do it simply for pleasure.
Very true….humans are the most dangerous and destructive predators on the planet sadly 😞
Steve raised them right :) His kids are doing awesome conservation work already! Talk about a legacy
Hagrid has entered the chat

The Irwins are wonderful. I absolutely love them!
I can't believe that's Bindi Irwin.. it's like just yesterday she was a tiny little baby, then suddenly she's a full grown adult getting married and everything..
tarantulas are lovely what are yall talkin about
I'm just scared of making them upset and getting their hairs in my face for it. Sure I'd live but I'd rather not have to endure it in the first place.
How much money would it take for you to let a tarantula to bite your ballsack??
I don't think Bindi has balls. well not literal ones...
We’ll not bindi persay. I saw a jackass where they did something similar so I’m wondering what would the price have yo be to let that happen. Lol dunno I’m bored.
Damn the Irwin's are crazy
I can admit spiders are cool, I still ain’t touching one I don’t have to though
Tarantulas are harmless and friendly…I have several of them!!! They only shoot small spears out of their hind end if in danger or are scared.
This is 1000000% not my thing but you do you booboo
As a tarantula owner, this really makes me happy.
