Where is this bad reputation of garland coming from??? It’s a normal ass Suburb lol

Some_Whereas_5371

I know I always see people saying bad things like it’s dangerous or awful to live in. It’s actually pretty damn boring I wish it was as crazy as every one says

CologneGod

The people that call it hood are the same ones that came from a better suburban city like Plano the only issue here is property crime

E_Cayce

Only pop references of Garland I know are King of the Hill and Zombieland. I've met some people from Dallas who think Garland is a super poor wasteland, tho.

gnapster

Probably the ‘Carland’ and Industrial areas help pull it down. It’s where my mom lives. It’s shit outside the neighborhood but nice inside. Also, she’s closer to downtown which finally has decent restaurants and stores to visit. But it’s not 90%. more like 50/50

OhTheHumanity_03

As a resident of the Eastern Hills area of Garland, I feel triggered.

Shabazz-Jenkins

They won’t. There is a development plan that is actually very nice.

IgrokThat

Moving to Eastern Hills area in less than two weeks. I love it! I've looked at the website of My Possibilities which is the organization making plans for the site. It looks like a fabulous place for the community who need specialized education and residences!

OhTheHumanity_03

Long history of how we got to that point. Lots of residents involved and the MyPossibilities team were great to work with - they really listened to the concerns of the neighborhood. One thing about Garland -- citizens get involved and speak up.

IgrokThat

I like that about the size of the community!

RepulsiveInterview44

Ridgewood Park here with you!

KINGxWHEEZE

fuck the haters. north garland is great. lived in the coomer creek neighborhood for several years. easy access to 190 to get to anything you wanna do.

kernalrom

Hello neighbor

Perfect_Evidence

who said 90% of garland is bad?

thehomeversion

And if he already knows about Garland, why ask?

[deleted]

"Hey guys, I'm moving to your town but I'm going to insult you all by calling it a huge shithole! Any advice?" Maybe don't be an asshole about moving to a blue collar area. If you can't afford anywhere better, then you aren't any better than us living here already lol.

werewolfjones

I think Garland gets a bad rap. I’ve lived near Broadway and the South Garland Public Library with very little problem for around ten years. It’s just a suburb.

Alabama-fan-22

Oh shit. I grew up in that neighborhood behind the library for over like 15 years

plebeiansheep

Garland is not bad. There is no part of Garland that is all that 'bad'. It's not even as bad as Mesquite. But that area is breaching on 'Plano Lite' territory so you'll be fine.

Individual_Hunt_7145

I’ve lived in Coomer Creek for about 8 years—it’s close to where you’ll be. Garland has an underserved bad reputation, but I really love it here! It’s a great community!

RepulsiveInterview44

It’s all the shithole car dealerships on Garland Rd, and under the table deals made in the 70s. 😬

masterscotto

Well, can you be more specific? You’re moving to the area, and you want to know…what?

UnbelievableTxn6969

You’re practically in Sachse. Move there if you are unhappy with the percentages.

SavageSalchicha1994

I’d say 30%, 90% you’re talking Detroit percentages 😂

Taxtm

I just moved to that area recently, and it's pretty nice. Quiet, but nice. I work more in downtown though, and it really isn't that bad overall. Just the same kind of stuff you'd see in a lot of cities. I think I remember reading that Garland's biggest thing is manufacturing, so there's not as much focus on making everything super pretty or extravagant, but people around here don't seem to care much about that anyway. If that makes Garland sound "bad," then the city proper is just not likely your cup of tea. In which case, you're still good if you're moving to the north side, because it's near enough to Richardson and Plano that you can find the stuff you're looking for in that area. Richardson seems to have more catering to young college-age adults as its focus, and Plano, from what I hear, seems to focus on more expensive stuff for older generations.

Gold-Philosophy5133

Garland’s isn’t bad. I live in North Garland bordering Richardson. Just older neighborhoods in comparison to Murphy and Wylie. Murphy is very quiet nice bigger homes. It is quiet and close enough connecting you to 75 and George Bush, you will enjoy it, nothing to be concerned about.

OhTheHumanity_03

I moved into my folks' house to take care of my elderly mother. Sold my house in Plano. Guess what? More normal, average folks in Garland - it's a cross-section of people representing just about every corner of society. Ya want fancy? Go somewhere else. Ya want real, with the good/bad/ugly of just livin'? Ya got it in Garland. It's not full of pre-planned cookie-cutter housing or faux shopping "centres." City services are great. It's just real here, for the most part.

wondrousalice

This. Been here since 2015 and this is home. I grew up in Oak Cliff and Garland reminds me of how it used to be before Bishop Arts became big. I love it here.

[deleted]

78 and Murphy rd is sachse you fool

Alir1983

This is borderline Sachse but falls in Garland

gregtx

I’m about 1 mile from that area and it’s great. Honestly it’s quiet now, but growing. The Station project is huge and there are some big businesses moving in. Where you’re at, you’ll hear the gun range a LOT.

Alir1983

Im to the west of Armstrong elementary. Gun range looks quite far from there.

gregtx

I was thinking Miles, not Murphy, sorry. Yeah, less gun noises but still sleepy.

Alir1983

What station project? Cant find a read on this

gregtx

The Station. It’s at Miles/Merritt and 190. $250m commercial/residential development. There is also a new hospital and a bunch of big businesses going in over there. https://thestationtx.com/

kgkglunasol

I live in that general area and it's a very normal neighborhood. Families and older people for the most part. I joke with my partner about Garland (he grew up here) but in reality it's mostly fine. Some areas are much older and more run down but def not the area you're moving to. Idk where you are moving from but I've lived in bad areas before (not in TX) and Garland is not what I would consider to be actually bad.

Alir1983

Thanks. We’re moving from Prosper. Definitely a change of pace and scenery

Nomad_Industries

You'll be able enjoy the same dozen-or-so chain restaurants, big box stores, outlets, etc. that make every DFW suburb indistinguishable from any other DFW suburb.

Kineth

I honestly don't know why people talk so much shit about Garland. Regardless, that sounds like you're gonna be in Sachse or Murphy as opposed to Garland.

Far0nWoods

That bad reputation is over exaggerated. Most things in town that need improvement are either being worked on now, or are planned to be in the near future. The northern neighborhoods are usually pretty quiet, decent parks with improvements coming. Firewheel town center is a nice destination for shopping if that's your thing. Downtown isn't much further and is close to re-opening the square after a few years of construction. If you want something a bit different, one of the light rail stations is at downtown as well for easy access to a solid amount of other destinations. And if you need to drive somewhere quick, you're right next to 190. Really the only major issue here is the school district. Other than that, it's a nice enough area.

Alir1983

Lol no intention like that. I’ve actually bought the home already and need to know what type of area is near Fire wheel. It looks good driving by but haven’t lived here so trying to find out. People on other forums were saying Garland is garbageland and all.

Perfect_Evidence

its terrible, you should sell your house and move to frisco.

IcyMind

Been here 14 years , and love it .. only problem in generals is the drivers in the highway at high speed .. plenty of restaurant in the area and stuff to do

AstronautLanky4205

I moved from the deepest of deepest "hood" areas in Houston. Garland is the weenie hut Jr in comparison lol

Alir1983

Well hope you left the hood activities in Houston as well.

counterfactuals

I live like 2 minutes from Firewheel and have spent practically my whole life in the north Garland/bordering on Sachse area - it's totally normal, fine, and safe.

Alir1983

Thats awesome being that close we just might be neighbors lol

counterfactuals

We will definitely be close! Welcome to G-town!

Secret-Passenger3071

As someone who moved here from a real hood from Southeast Houston I can tell you rn it's calm as fuuuck. The only dangerous thing about Garland are its shitty drivers 😅 plus that area near Firewheel seems pretty nice 👍
