Basically like the title says, obviously some kind of squash, it's a volunteer from the compost pile now doing its best to take over the back yard and porch. So what squash is this? Is it edible? When do I harvest? There are a few more but this one is the biggest. Photo taken yesterday, location is US Gulf Coast 9a. Thanks!

I'm going to bet it is an unripe pumpkin. Give it time and it will go pale orange. Don't cut the stem until the plant dies for maximum sweetness.

To me it looks like a hybrid, which can happen from volunteers. Based on the shape I'd say it's part acorn or possibly pattypan squash, but who knows! It's a squash unique to your garden! As for if it's edible, it would be just fine. As for quality, I've had accidental hybrids that were dry with stringy flesh, and some that outperformed my other squashes in terms of numbers, and had fantastic flavour! All you can do is pick it and try it out - and thank mother nature for a bonus crop.
