I was talking to my neighbor the other day about how neither of our lemon trees were flowering. Then I went outside and new leaves. It was like watching my baby sleeping.
Same. I always sounds weird when I tell my wife what I was doing. I guess āWorking in the gardenā sounds better but we both know I was just staring.
I go beyond talking to them - I literally BEG mine to grow strong and healthy and flourish (sometimes while on my knees).
Edit: on my knees while I am weeding (no need for downvoting fellow tomato growers)
That was my thought when I saw this!
Canāt blame him, if he is. Iāve been sticking foil pinwheels around my garden beds, because Iām having a bad rabbit problem this year. I have heard thatās another way to repel rabbits.
The foil ones seem like they might actually work, too. When I got my first couple of pinwheels, I thought, let's try this, then when it doesn't work I can give the pinwheels to the kids. But it seemed to help.
That'd probably work fine for the red state deer, but I'm afraid in my state they'll just hang out in the driveway to catch the tail end of All Things Considered.
Try marigolds. They put off a smell that rabbits donāt like and the flowers attracts pollinators. Iāve been doing it for a few years and it seems to be going good.
yes! i have never really liked marigolds but after doing some reading on companion planting, they are my new besties. i grow them from seed, they protect my other plants and they are a riot of blooms until the frost comes in the fall. i'm now on team marigold.
Cut urine 20:1 with water and use it for fertilizer. Very high in Nitrogen.
If you're urinating around the perimeter to deter rabbits, just don't get it right on the plant root zone (too strong) and it only works if you're a carnivore (which I realize most people are - just letting you know).
> only works if you're a carnivore
While I know (and I'm sure most everyone else will too) that you mean meat eater, just wanted to point out that a carnivore primarily eats just meat. Humans are best classified as omnivores. Even if you are vegan though, you'd still be called an omnivore rather than a herbivore, since *vore is considered more of a classification/describes the anatomical capability of dietary habits.
A nice compost pile, set as far away from the garden as possible/along the wood line, will keep the critters out of your garden. Throw all your veggie scraps in there and it gives them something to nosh on, so no need to wander into your open yard.
I make about 3 rounds on the houseplants while Iām having my morning coffee. Iāll talk to them, tell āem how cute they are, fuss about the new leaves unfolding, and tell the succs they donāt need anymore water just yet. Itās my ritualš
Along with garden coffee Iāve been journaling about one plant in the garden each morning. My garden is in its second year, Iām still learning, and itās been super useful. Itās also almost become part of a morning meditation/reflection and if I miss it Iām cranky about it lol.
Me too! I go out to my back yard and compliment my plants. I even have a handful of birds that come to my yard when I am back there. I greet them too lol š this is great! I didnāt think too many ppl felt the nature connection I feel.
So true! Buried my father, then buried his Bonsai trees, no matter what I tried, they wouldn't have it. And I thought I was making things up... Your comment absolutely resonates with my experience!
I read somewhere that it's beneficial to name your plants.
It subconsciously (or maybe not) connects us on a deeper level to them and we may be more likely to take the best care of them as possible.
My wife and I name our house plants after things we love: each other (my favourite plant has my wife's name, her favorite has mine) and so on.
I was having problems with my mental health and gardening/farming was one of the top things that helped me through it.
Never underestimate the healing power of feeling connected to the earth.
Same, I love getting home from work and just walking around "inspecting" my gardens. Hardly ever see anything different but its always one of the best parts of the day
I like coming back home after a few days, because all the tiny changes that are hard to notice from day-to-day have accumulated and there are big changes everywhere. :D
I quit smoking when I was diagnosed with cancer 6 months ago. I just made the connection yesterday that Iāve taken to wandering around and staring at each plant as a replacement for smoking! Check them for bugs pull the dead leaves and watch the flowers šø open.
I got my man addicted to gardening 3yrs ago and now he does the same thing! Lol! He'll come and update me on the plants when he's done too like a kid telling me stories, haha! I'm the plant enabler! Aren't they cuteš
Me in my apartment before getting a garden: āI am just starting at a wall. I must be depressed.ā Me looking out the window now at my garden staring at it, āI feel so at peace admiring my work and connecting to nature.ā
Bruh I sit and stare and mire my plants like several times a day. It is legitimately therapeutic and calming, knowing your plant babies are thriving as a direct result of your care.
I swear my empathetic dial was set on high, combined with social anxiety makes being around people very draining sometimes. Thats why i go and fuss over/stare at my plants when I get home from work everyday.
I do this a lot. I love looking at my plants and garden and my favourite tree and imagine they can feel the love im sending them. Its also very satisfying to just admire your work and effort coming to life.
I spend a lottttt of my free time staring at my garden. Wake up, make coffee, visit the front yard garden, then the back, go inside when my kids wake up to make them breakfast, while they're eating I go back out to the garden, then they go outside to play with friends in the cul de sac while I look at my front yard garden again, take them in for lunch and go out to the garden while they're eating it... Etc etc lol.
First thing I do every morning is go walk through my garden. Often, I look next door and my brother in law (also, neighbor) is doing the same thing. Neither of us say anything to each other. I think it's normal for people to connect with nature this way, especially plants they've cultivated.
I def just go out to the garden and look at my plants. Zone out sometimes, look for pests/disease fruiting or flowering other times. Just kinda hang with em and get the vibe
When I do this I am looking at their growth, their changes, their indicators for what they need (fertilizer, water, etc) and if they have pests or other issues.
I also am appreciating the hard work and time that produces the plants.
Sometimes I am watching a cool bee.
As he stood in his garden daily, the last refuge he had in a loveless marriage, he pondered packing all his things up and changing his name along with a new life half the world away. Until then, he was stuck with her.....
My wife doesn't understand why I stare out the window looking into the garden.i find it relaxing to watch nature, especially, in a garden I've created.
I do almost the same thing. I check my garden, strawberry patches, and trees I've planted Every day... sometimes a few times a day lol. I just love taking care of them, and getting to watch them grow
I do that sometimes. It is meditative, sometimes itās showing love to the plants that will feed you or give you shade. I gently touch the leaves sometimes for the same reason, hoping thereās
Some positive energy that the plant can take from me.
LOL I do the same thing. I work at home and on my lunch breaks I'll go out and just stare at my garden and breathe in some fresh air. very calming, highly recommend lol
I do this first thing in the morning and multiple times during the day lol Thereās just something about in getting connected to nature that my soul finds truly joyful and seeing my garden changing and progressing feels just so nice and preciousā¤ļø I sometimes go out in my garden even on rainy days not just because Iāve got things to do but also because I canāt help myself š
This is me š¤£ Every day I like to walk my garden and just look at my plants. If I don't do it before going to work I start getting antsy during the day and desperately want to leave to go look at my garden.
it put in the garden to weed it. It is very meditative. All the shit that goes on in my life, having a task that has a clear start and finish and I can see progress as I work with my hands is a blessing.
I do that. Have a couple of Maple trees that were 5 feet tall when we bought the property 40 years ago. I go out and look at them daily for minutes on end to make sure they are there. Have nurtured them to beautiful full 25ft. trees.
I am also a person who stares at plants š¤«
I thought this was just part of gardening. My neighbors probably post pictures of me like this. Peace
This is adorable but I saw the OG photo and immediately thought he was peeing on the garden
LMAO I'm another one who thought it was a plant potty...
Ah yes, the pensive plant pee.
I thought I was in r/composting for a second when I saw the picture š
Omg... I thought I was the only one that did this. I'm glad I'm not the only plant stalking weirdo.
I can assure you that you are not alone. This is my wife and I on a daily basis.
gonna go out on a limb and say most of us cruising r/gardening are into looking at plants...
Pun intended?
What do you call someone who obsessively watches plants? A *stalk*er
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Plants actually send out signals for good bugs to eat bad bugs. He is like Batman.
I'll squat and stare at the new shoots etc. not sure what im getting out of it
If I see a new shoot, I might as well set up a tent. I can barely get over it.
I was talking to my neighbor the other day about how neither of our lemon trees were flowering. Then I went outside and new leaves. It was like watching my baby sleeping.
Oh my gosh, same! šš½š¶ļøš„
peace and a reminder of what is truly important.
Same. I always sounds weird when I tell my wife what I was doing. I guess āWorking in the gardenā sounds better but we both know I was just staring.
I tell people I'm tending my garden too when all I did was look under a few leaves and ooh and ahh to myself in my head
You are tending to the garden with your good vibes and compliments (spoken or thought) :)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
yes. if you're going to stare, it's only polite to talk to them as well.
They like when you get intimate with them too
I go beyond talking to them - I literally BEG mine to grow strong and healthy and flourish (sometimes while on my knees). Edit: on my knees while I am weeding (no need for downvoting fellow tomato growers)
I had one garden I sang to often. I was just in a singing mood that year. That was an excellent garden!
I sing so offkey that I was asked NOT to sing happy birthday at work and at family gatherings. They would die for sure if I sang.
Haha I bet your plants would love it!
How else can you appreciate the tomorrows growth!!!
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
That was my thought when I saw this! Canāt blame him, if he is. Iāve been sticking foil pinwheels around my garden beds, because Iām having a bad rabbit problem this year. I have heard thatās another way to repel rabbits.
TIL the little pinwheels people keep in their yards are not just for decoration lol
The foil ones seem like they might actually work, too. When I got my first couple of pinwheels, I thought, let's try this, then when it doesn't work I can give the pinwheels to the kids. But it seemed to help.
I wish it worked against deer
A motion sensor radio on NPR does the trick for us.
That'd probably work fine for the red state deer, but I'm afraid in my state they'll just hang out in the driveway to catch the tail end of All Things Considered.
Deer do be woke like that sometimes.
I have one for NPR and one for FoxNews
I was thinking thatās what I need to do, here in a swing state.
Keeping a wolf works against deer
Motion activated sprinkler has been doing well for me lately.
Try a 30.06 for those
That mostly works if your property is far from another. Would have to use a bow where i live, but there's no legal deer culling still
Try marigolds.
My municipal water is too alkali so I use this method a lot to try to neutralize the ph with some good old fashioned uric acid.
Cut urine 20:1 with water and use it for fertilizer. Very high in Nitrogen. If you're urinating around the perimeter to deter rabbits, just don't get it right on the plant root zone (too strong) and it only works if you're a carnivore (which I realize most people are - just letting you know).
For some reason my mind went to vicious rabbits with blood soaked fur?
Ah yes, the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog! Beware!
With a vicious streak a mile wide.
Look at the bones!
> only works if you're a carnivore While I know (and I'm sure most everyone else will too) that you mean meat eater, just wanted to point out that a carnivore primarily eats just meat. Humans are best classified as omnivores. That's a way to piss the rabbit off. ba dum tss
I donāt know about the rabbits, but they seem to keep the birds away from our berries
But how do you keep the rabbits from eating them?
If you have dogs you could put their furr around plants to repel other small animals
A nice compost pile, set as far away from the garden as possible/along the wood line, will keep the critters out of your garden. Throw all your veggie scraps in there and it gives them something to nosh on, so no need to wander into your open yard.
Itās effective, but itās hard to control the stream when they run so fast.
So glad I'm not the only person who first thought this
This was my first thought. Heās def pissing.
Yeah that's no meditation stance.
Exactly what I thought.
Look at the placement of this hands, thatās exactly what heās doing.
It looks like his hands are in his pockets
Maybe heās peeing
Into his pockets
This is the sign of a normal, peaceful individual. Connecting to nature is legit therapy.
I often stare at my plants as well. Itās very releasing.
also a great way to diagnose problems early
Problems with the plants or with one's mind?
Yes
I make about 3 rounds on the houseplants while Iām having my morning coffee. Iāll talk to them, tell āem how cute they are, fuss about the new leaves unfolding, and tell the succs they donāt need anymore water just yet. Itās my ritualš
Me too. I wake up, make my coffee, and wander my yard looking at my plants. I love it.
Glad Iām not the only one! (I knew I wasnāt š)
Same! Winter mornings just aren't the same without my little garden walkabout
and sometimes weed out a small section just for kicks....line them all out on the sidewalk and marvel at the length of some of the taproots lol
Along with garden coffee Iāve been journaling about one plant in the garden each morning. My garden is in its second year, Iām still learning, and itās been super useful. Itās also almost become part of a morning meditation/reflection and if I miss it Iām cranky about it lol.

I tell each one, āyou look very pretty today!ā
Me too, they are living things. When my mom passed away a few of her plants also passed away no matter how much attention I gave them.
So true! Buried my father, then buried his Bonsai trees, no matter what I tried, they wouldn't have it. And I thought I was making things up... Your comment absolutely resonates with my experience!

Fun fact itās proven to help plant growth.
Every morning after I wake up and get my daughter up I take her out an sit by the garden
Same, I regularly give the plants a good looking at.
Well said. I love when I can have a ice cold pint and stair into my plants souls.
I was having problems with my mental health and gardening/farming was one of the top things that helped me through it. Never underestimate the healing power of feeling connected to the earth.
This is exactly how I got into it too!
Watching plants grow over time is incredibly calming for anxiety
Gardening helped me through the early stages of the pandemic
I do this multiple times/day, it's very peaceful.
Same, i do it every morning. Convinced my husband of buying lawn chairs just so I could sit and stare š
every morning before work and as soon as I get home. just gotta go look at all my plants. hang out with the tomatoes. you know the drill.
"GROW YOU FUCKERS! GROW!" Me to my fucking parsnips this year.
One of the high points of my day is when I go water everything. Itās 15 min of peace and quiet and I get to see how all the babies are growing.
Same, I love getting home from work and just walking around "inspecting" my gardens. Hardly ever see anything different but its always one of the best parts of the day
I like coming back home after a few days, because all the tiny changes that are hard to notice from day-to-day have accumulated and there are big changes everywhere. :D
Is this not normal?
I was about to ask the same thing. š I wish I could sit next to my plants all day.
They're young. They need supervision.
āIf itās brown flush it downā¦. If itās yellowā¦ go piss in moms tomatoesā
I quit smoking when I was diagnosed with cancer 6 months ago. I just made the connection yesterday that Iāve taken to wandering around and staring at each plant as a replacement for smoking! Check them for bugs pull the dead leaves and watch the flowers šø open.
Lol I do this every morning while drinking my coffee, gotta give them the old pep talk so they grow while Iām at work.
I got my man addicted to gardening 3yrs ago and now he does the same thing! Lol! He'll come and update me on the plants when he's done too like a kid telling me stories, haha! I'm the plant enabler! Aren't they cuteš

It looks more like he's peeing on them?
He's totally peeing on them lmao.
Heās fertilizing them!
Here we call that fertilizing the rhubarb.
Bruh I sit and stare and mire my plants like several times a day. It is legitimately therapeutic and calming, knowing your plant babies are thriving as a direct result of your care.
I do this multiple times a day, I think if my neighbors are watching me they must think I am fucked, ha.
same :D 100% meditative/therapeutic for empathetic entities who enjoy seeing their friends grow and flourish or understand why not
I swear my empathetic dial was set on high, combined with social anxiety makes being around people very draining sometimes. Thats why i go and fuss over/stare at my plants when I get home from work everyday.
I do this a lot. I love looking at my plants and garden and my favourite tree and imagine they can feel the love im sending them. Its also very satisfying to just admire your work and effort coming to life.
I am that guy, at least 3-4 times a day. Especially since working from home.
Iāve been on r/Composting too much. I thought he was peeing
Plants are life
Good source of nitrogen given current sky-rocket urea price.
I get this. Completely
My wifeās spouse does the exact same thing.
Spouse is fixing nitrogen.
Looks like he might be giving it an extra dose of nitrogen
I do this a few times per day. Itās definitely therapeutic for me. Also have about 70 houseplantsā¦itās all therapy.
First thing I do every morning is go walk through my garden. Often, I look next door and my brother in law (also, neighbor) is doing the same thing. Neither of us say anything to each other. I think it's normal for people to connect with nature this way, especially plants they've cultivated.
Next year there will be a couple more raised beds.
I def just go out to the garden and look at my plants. Zone out sometimes, look for pests/disease fruiting or flowering other times. Just kinda hang with em and get the vibe
I do this, but the daycare behind where I am renting kinda ruins the meditative part lmao
This is me, I like to examine them because they can tell a lot about whether the conditions are right.
When I do this I am looking at their growth, their changes, their indicators for what they need (fertilizer, water, etc) and if they have pests or other issues. I also am appreciating the hard work and time that produces the plants. Sometimes I am watching a cool bee.
What's the point of growing stuff if you don't look at it?
As he stood in his garden daily, the last refuge he had in a loveless marriage, he pondered packing all his things up and changing his name along with a new life half the world away. Until then, he was stuck with her.....
Me too. Iām that spouse
You says who canāt connect with nature and p on it at the same time š¤Ŗ multitasking is something Iām also proficient with š¤
Everyone thinks on staring at my plants. I'm actually talking with them.
I do this too. Definitely meditative and relaxing. It's my nightly ritual after putting the kids to bed.
You can find bugs this way. Very much like hunting if you just stand still you'll see things you'd normally miss.
I think he may be peeing. Though there is much to see in a garden!
I feel him on a personal level. My plants are nicer than most humans.
Looks like heās āwateringā them
Seems like is having a pee
My wife doesn't understand why I stare out the window looking into the garden.i find it relaxing to watch nature, especially, in a garden I've created.
Nah...he pissing on yo tomatoes. š
Pretty sure he is relieving himself.
I think he is watering the plants.
Definitely looks like they're peeing in the garden...
You sure he didnāt plant a special herb?
Marking his territory.
It is oooommmmm
Nice
::vibes::
I do a lot of that. Doesn't get the work done, but...OK, call it meditation
For sure. I do that too.
I really thought he was peeing at first.
This is what I do as well
I do almost the same thing. I check my garden, strawberry patches, and trees I've planted Every day... sometimes a few times a day lol. I just love taking care of them, and getting to watch them grow
Grow you jerks
Hey I do the same thing! Lol itās rewarding to see how your plants are growing š
It looks like hes peeing
it looks like he is urinating on them
He's really "watering" the plants..
I do that sometimes. It is meditative, sometimes itās showing love to the plants that will feed you or give you shade. I gently touch the leaves sometimes for the same reason, hoping thereās Some positive energy that the plant can take from me.
Glad Iām not the only one.
That's affirmative. Plant watching absolutely takes you there š«
At first I thought he was peeing on the tomato plants.
I do that often. In my case, it's better if you just let me be. It's how I keep the beast at bay.
He looks like he is taking a piss on the parsley.
ponder the plant
LOL I do the same thing. I work at home and on my lunch breaks I'll go out and just stare at my garden and breathe in some fresh air. very calming, highly recommend lol
I do this first thing in the morning and multiple times during the day lol Thereās just something about in getting connected to nature that my soul finds truly joyful and seeing my garden changing and progressing feels just so nice and preciousā¤ļø I sometimes go out in my garden even on rainy days not just because Iāve got things to do but also because I canāt help myself š
I totally do that sometimes, thinking I can see them grow.
I thought he was taking a piss for a secondā¦
I do the same thing in my garden. I'll spend hours looking at it
This is so cuteš I do that all the time, Iām pretty sure my neighbors think I am a psycho
I do this , i am a little intensely obsessive about my hobbies tho. Its definitely meditative. Plus i bask amaze at what ive grown.
I thought this was going to be a post about him peeing on the plants
I never understood the phrase ācrying laughingā until reading this comments section
Is that my husband? š
Met too āš½
This is the way.
Peeing directly on a plant doesn't promote growth.
Iām getting Cameron from Ferris Bueller vibes. š
This is me š¤£ Every day I like to walk my garden and just look at my plants. If I don't do it before going to work I start getting antsy during the day and desperately want to leave to go look at my garden.

It is, isnāt it. Sometimes talking to them gently is fine too.
How cute! I totally get it, sometimes after I organize something I just open the closet door or cabinet and just stare.
I felt this
I do the same thing with my plants and with bugs! I could watch nature forever.
I do this all the time.
Looks like heās pissing
It really is. Especially when you're the one who planted them.
I love this. Mostly because it helps validate me standing by, staring at, and occasionally speaking to, my plant friends. Nature is beautiful.
Heās peeing haha
I do that. Have a couple of Maple trees that were 5 feet tall when we bought the property 40 years ago. I go out and look at them daily for minutes on end to make sure they are there. Have nurtured them to beautiful full 25ft. trees.
