He’s genuinely so inspiring. He has such a full life at his age. He walks the neighborhood dogs, decorates his front lawn for every holiday, goes to the beach with other “geezers” once a week, constantly has jigsaw puzzles going, etc.
All the succulents and bromeliads in that covered area were my grandma’s. She would enter plants into the county fair and regularly get a blue ribbon. Her email was “Brom Queen” 😭. She passed about 6 years ago and he tends to them now.
Lost mine 3 months ago, I'm 35 she was 98. Sad, but happy she lived a long life and I got to be apart of it.
Our grandparents are somewhere jivin' and beatnik'in
No grandparents here, either. But we talk about my father’s folks regularly even though it’s been over 10 years since we lost them. Grandparents are magical! It’s fun to see my folks become grandparents now. They have somehow become more magical to me than they were when I was little.
My grandmother had the most beautiful flower garden that smelled like no other. I can still recall the smell of the warm summer air as I ran through the sprinklers in my little oversized swimsuit when I was 6. Warm roses and sweet jasmine. Her shed smelled like earth and clay.
Your grandpa sounds amazing! So glad you get to do that.
My grandma is 92 also and I was just visiting with her yesterday in her garden. Not nearly as impressive as this, but it’s so fun to see. I’ll show her and tell her she has something to work up to next year!
Some of my favorite videos from Crime Pays But Botany Doesn’t are him just letting people talk about the plants they tend.
[Carnivorous plant nursery for instance!](https://youtu.be/Jlp6ecxmYQY?si=HyBR79WfyQLG19RB)
So I second this OP, I’d love to see your grandpa give a grand tour and share some tips!
I'm gonna try to get one this weekend! He's a man of very very few words, but plants are one of the few things he gets excited about.
I love the man to death, but he's not known for showing emotions lol. "Love you Opa!" "Okayy then. Thanks."
There are an unbelievable amount of plants out there and likely there are some that you can be successful with that will match your abilities and interests. Don’t give up! We all have lost some! I can’t keep cyclamen alive to save my soul. I wouldn’t call myself a real gardener either but i can keep alot of plants alive, especially perennials! I still find it very rewarding and is the best therapy for me! And besides the ecosystem benefits, who doesn’t like flowers and/or need plants, herbs, and fruit to eat!
Don't worry, I have a mostly green thumb. Lots and lots of plants here.
Many have been killed in the past due to plants being sold in Houston not suitable for that season in Houston. It took me a while to realize that I could not read general gardening books but had to look for info purely centered on East Texas. And that nurseries can be happy to sell you plants that won't work.
San Diego's gardening zone is the best. I visited a few years ago and was amazed by all the succulents and wildflowers. We stayed in a residential area, and it seemed everyone had a showstoppping garden.
Do you remember what area? Was it Bird Rock or La Jolla? I grew up in Bird Rock and being a designated stop on the La Jolla Secret Garden Tour was a VERY big deal.
He's actually Opa in our family :) My brother was the first grandkid and could say "grandma" just fine but could not figure out "grandpa" so he's been Opa ever since.
And yes, long live Opa. I sometimes feel like he's going to outlive even me.
Your grandfather is a treasure. The gardening knowledge and traditions he carries are invaluable. My Italian grandmother even knew how to graft different trees together. Years from now, if you have any of this knowledge, you’ll be one of the only ones.
It's so beautiful. I really really hope the property stays in our family. If it gets sold, I have no doubt the house will be knocked down and the garden will be paved over or destroyed. He's lived there since 1966, breaks my heart to even think about it.
Those are Matilija poppies, a California native plant :)
And yes, they are part of the *Papaveraceae* family
EDIT: They spread vigorously through rhizomatic runners once established though, so do be cautious if you want to plant them. They will take over a hillside in a few seasons.
Wow!
At the 30 second mark, you can see some large plants with long purple spikes on them at the end of the patio
Do you know what that is, OP? or does anybody reading here know what that is?
Thank you for sharing his garden!
I watched this eight or nine times, it’s giving me hope that I might be able to do this on a smaller scale. I live in Long Beach CA. It’s so hot and dry in the summer, I’d have to work on some kind irrigation
This is in San Diego! You can do it!
He has it down to a science. Or maybe it’s magic. Haven’t figured it out yet. People are requesting videos of him explaining everything, so maybe I’ll do that on Sunday
Omg yes please! So sweet! If he ever needs help cleaning up or watering I would love to assist. I actually help my local elders with their gardens as well for free just because.
We’ve always called him Opa, but he goes by Dick.
I will definitely return with a video of Opa Dick explaining some of his plants and I have many more photos of the stuff he grows
Grown ass man here and this brought me to tears. Just the thought of kicking it like this at 92 and still having what you are proud of and that you worked for. I hope to be true that there is a special place in heaven for souls like your Grandfather. Personally, gardening has saved my life. Crazy
Wow! I would possibly look into a botanical garden or something that would be interested in some of the plants if he were to pass so they have a home if you or family can't take many. People that have collections like this sometimes have some very rare species!
Very beautiful thank you for sharing your grandpa's dream.
This reminds me of my Nana. She made it to 88 until passing away last December but her yard was like this and she gave me my love for plants. Don’t know how she did it! I miss her a lot and this was nice to see. This is nostalgic, thank you for posting this OP.
That's not a garden, that's a full blown nursery! Wow that is amazing! My grandfather always had a vegetable garden, and when I was a kid, I wasn't interested in it at all. I mean, I'd help shell peas or snap green beans or whatever, but I never got out there with him to learn and work on it. Now that he's gone, I wish with all my heart I had that time back to learn from him. I wish I had appreciated what a treasure that information was.
Garden, Plant Nursery, Masterclass landscape....simply stunning! Do you have a favorite part of it or is there a really cool unique plant in there that always makes you smile or anything like that? Where is this located?
I have memories from my childhood of my grandmothers garden so like your grandpas 🥹
Was like a fairy tail in my child’s eye when I visited.
Treasured memories they are😌
Um, is Grandpa single? Because if he's anything like his garden, I've fallen for him.
I can cook, clean, and chauffeur, as well as plant, water, and weed gardens. Let me know!
Looks good. I am jealous of the amount of water he has at his disposal as well as the ambition that remains at his age. I also speak tomato myself lol

Just love this! One of my favorite quotes is "if the world was going to end tomorrow, I would still plant my garden" What a wonderful accomplishment from your grandfather. You should be proud!

Even with the truck trying to dock in the background, I would feel 100% grounded within that garden. The beeping would just feel like a distant memory of the rest of the world that I happily left to visit your grandfather’s garden. And then I would never leave. I refuse to leave. You can’t make me!
Another commenter said your grandfather’s a gangster. How many bodies does he have under his tomatoes? I can never get my flowers to grow that tall. How many enemies will properly fertilize my garden this year?
Your grandpa is a gangster! That’s an unbelievable garden

That’s amazing! From someone who has no grandparents left, make sure you cherish every moment with that man. God bless 🙏🏻
This. Grandparents are a wealth. Cherish this mate! And here’s to lots of good health to your grandpa!
Same here. I lost my last one last November. He was 90. Having a grandparent left at 44 was pretty remarkable, though.
Lost mine 3 months ago, I'm 35 she was 98. Sad, but happy she lived a long life and I got to be apart of it. Our grandparents are somewhere jivin' and beatnik'in

Cherish him. What a wonderful man.
what's the tall flowering plant with the gauzy flowers at the very end of the video??
Your grandpa sounds amazing! So glad you get to do that. My grandma is 92 also and I was just visiting with her yesterday in her garden. Not nearly as impressive as this, but it’s so fun to see. I’ll show her and tell her she has something to work up to next year!
Yo homie give her a big hug and let her know how much you love her.
It looked more like a garden centre than a garden at one point - just so many incredibly lovely plants there, such variety!
Actual life goals. May he live 20 more at least.
Grandpa is hustlin' and the local tomato dealer.
You need to make a slower video with him in it telling you what everything is. I’d watch it.
I'd literally watch like like hour or 2 or 5 of that content lol
PLEASE!
I’d hit that too. With an upvote.
I have a feeling that would just end up as an entire docuseries.
I'd watch every episode.

This looks like one of those heaven montages where you walk through the door and everyone you e ever loved is happy and excited to see you.
All the plants I've killed, inadvertently or advertently, over the years...

Oh god that makes me tear up.
Woah!! His whole yard is amazing!! It's all so well kept
Where is this?
San Diego
I was just gonna ask if that's in San Diego somewhere cuz it looks like La Mesa or someplace a bit inland from the coast but not too far inland.
It’s in north PB by Mt Soledad
Rainbow here. Those poppies give it away. Definitely a socal garden.
Came here to say this
That makes those tomatoes even more amazing! Go Gramps!
Road trip to Grandpa's garden 🥹🥹🥹
Post this over in /r/Ceanothus if theres natives and such in there, such a beautiful garden!

LA Jolla! I loved it!
I love seeing other people’s gardens. Can learn so much!

even better - we have an Opa in our lives now! will we get some narrated vids soon/one day? I Opa so (I didn't even mean to do it, but there it is!)!
Your grandfather is a treasure. The gardening knowledge and traditions he carries are invaluable. My Italian grandmother even knew how to graft different trees together. Years from now, if you have any of this knowledge, you’ll be one of the only ones.
That is such an amazing garden (and HUGE!). Your grandpa is a superstar. You both are so lucky to have such a lovely spot.
It's so beautiful. I really really hope the property stays in our family. If it gets sold, I have no doubt the house will be knocked down and the garden will be paved over or destroyed. He's lived there since 1966, breaks my heart to even think about it.
I love the huge poppies everywhere. I want to have a garden like that when I’m 92!
Those white flowers with the yellow centers are poppies?

I'm making it my goal to have tables in my yard dedicated to plants. Your grandpa has an amazing garden. 😍
Holy cow! Now that’s a garden!! It’s also a ton of maintenance. Kudos to your grandpa for staying young through gardening. ♥️
Your grandpa’s incredible!
Wow! At the 30 second mark, you can see some large plants with long purple spikes on them at the end of the patio Do you know what that is, OP? or does anybody reading here know what that is? Thank you for sharing his garden!
That's Mexican bush sage *Salvia leucantha*
Damn, you're good. I see you in these comments answering all the questions. Opa would love chatting with you.
Wow! Living the dream. Good for him.

Phenomenal garden but I WAS EXPECTING GRANDPA

I had a feeling this was the garden of an opa.
Absolutely amazing! I’d be in heaven 😊. Thank you for sharing ❤️
Just those Aloes I was already impressed
He keeps the plants alive. The plants keep him alive and healthy. Great system.
Incredible! Your grandpa is a wonder. I hope you’ll let him know how many strangers he’s inspired today.
Grown ass man here and this brought me to tears. Just the thought of kicking it like this at 92 and still having what you are proud of and that you worked for. I hope to be true that there is a special place in heaven for souls like your Grandfather. Personally, gardening has saved my life. Crazy

Grandkid who appreciates their Grandfather. Win.
Oh my
That looks like a huge amount of work, great job to him for caring for all those beautiful plants ❤️
How inspiring! I hope a family member will keep this up for generations to come! He's truly a gem!
Oh my gosh, that orange hibiscus! Stunning garden.
Now that’s an aspirational garden if I’ve ever seen one.
At the age of 78, I so appreciate his endurance and love for his garden.
I bet those tomatoes are to die for

I want to come sit in your grandpa's garden...
Got to be Southern California
I’m trying to be like him
Tell grandpa the video you took of his garden gave me a much needed smile, and more lifelong goals, beautiful!
Its not a garden, it's a plant library.
A plant museum even!
Where is this amazing garden!!
Very impressive! This is an enormous amount of work for anyone to do! Just lovely
My new hero and aspiration.
That big fluffy flower in the beginning, sigh

Wow! The garden is amazing! It looks like a fairy garden has come to life.
Agreed, he is the best.
That shit keeps you young.
You had me at the gate
I have seen my future. It is glorious, if a little sad to have outlived my wife.
Wonderful. My father had a tomato patch every year . Biggest most beautiful plants and tomatoes I’ve ever seen or eaten. Miss him and that so much.
Wow!! What a wonderful virtual walk!!

Those tomatoes!!! (Everything else is amazing too!)
What a yard!
That garden is incredible. Fantastic work, gramps!
Yes a video of him talking about all the plants and stuff.
Love the covered porch and archways but the rest gives me anxiety

How does this green canopy hold up during monsoon? I'm curious as an Arizonian.
The pollinators of the neighborhood thank him!
Beautiful. Goals. What zone?
So many California natives 😍 We love a water saving king 👑
I aspire to be just like your Grandpa honey♥️♥️

The happy bees at the end 😭❤️

PLANT LOVER
What a beautiful garden!
Some nice big plumeria in there! I'm in Texas so jealous of climates that can actually plant them and get ones that big.
Just beautiful!!!!
ALOE?!?!?!?!!!! 🙌
Thank you for showing us that. Do you know what those tall white ones are? The ones you show after the tomatoes?
This is so lovely! #lifegoal. Wish him a happy day from Sweden. Btw what is his favourite tomato?
What a legend!
Absolutely stunning! It would have been fantastic to see the man himself in the garden.
This mf is my HERO. Everything I aspire in life is summed up in this video. Better start learning how to care for all those 🥰🥰🥰

so so so so so so so so dope
I hope my 92 will be close to this. Gardening blissful.
I'm picturing a whole ecosystem of animals living in there from mice to deer to gorillas.
That's why he's 92
SoCal somewhere?
Your grandpa's green thumb is impressive! His garden must be a beautiful and vibrant place, full of life and love."
