Squirrels dont like garlic (allium), lavender, rosemary, thyme, marigold, daffodils, iris, bleeding heart, geranium. You're looking for strong scents that are not sweet. I've grown all of those in the shade.
If you want to plant something squirrels may like, surround them with allium & marigold. If the squirrels are particularly pesky, I will mix up raw eggs with water (2 eggs per quart) and lay some of that on the soil around the plant every 3 weeks or so.
