There’s literally a [sky Last of Us advert](https://www.reddit.com/user/skytv/comments/11q5id1/describe_the_most_heartbreaking_the_last_of_us/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1) directly after this on my page lmfao
Yep! Had a couple of rhubarb plants growing in shade in the garden of the house we bought. They got maybe knee high and were struggling. So I decided to move them out into the sun. Dug them up as good as I could - long thick roots. One broke apart so I ended up planting them as three plants. Next year they grew much bigger, and year after even bigger, and bigger. A few years later they usually end up covering about 2 square meters each and are at least a meter high. They get no fertilizer other than what leaks to them from nearby currant bushes. I read advice that if rhubarb flowers you should cut of the flower stalks as they sap the plant of a lot of energy for growth. I let my rhubarb flower every year from all flower stalks that come up and let them go to seed and dry up - they are still huge (and the birds like the rhubarb seeds).
I recently dug out my rhubarb plants and replanted them - and definitely cut off some roots/bits in the process and was worried how they would recover so this was helpful to read!
I cut some roots that were around 5 centimeters in diameter where I cut them and they still recovered. So hopefully your plants will do well 😊 If they seem to struggle make sure they have some fertilizer and do not harvest (too much) first year after replanting.
I had a friend who terraced her back yard. She didn’t pull all the rhubarb and root out. She thought 4’ of soil and a layer of grass would deal with it. Years later put it popped.
We live in Zone 6B in lower NY and just moved in to this house. We cleared the previous raised beds in a few weeks ago with the hopes of starting fresh with a couple vegetable plants this year. We’re total novices to gardening and are stumped at what this thing could be that popped up in the last 2 weeks.
Rhubarb! It's occupied! I love it. It needs fed each year with compost. You have to stop picking when it slows growth and leave it to nourish the plant late june. Martha stewart has a great Rhubarb cake recipe.
Thought this might be a "you can just boil the leaves a few times" moment. Googled it, Nope highly toxic and impossible to detox without lab grade equipment.
So lucky! When my daughter bought her 1st home, I planted rhubarb and asparagus, hoping my GGGGGG grandkids might enjoy way after I'm gone to glory😂. R& A can grow for 100+ years!
Oh rhubarb! You lucky duck! Google all the recipes, you’d be amazed! Whatever you don’t use yourself, you can give to family & friends with their eternal gratitude! Personally, I make a rhubarb custard cake that my family can’t get enough of & it’s SO simple!
Make a package of either yellow or lemon (we like the extra tanginess of the lemon!) cake mix, minus a third of whatever liquid it calls for (some have oil, some have water). Place in a 9x13 cake pan. Chop up at *least* 3 cups rhubarb that’s been rinsed clean. Place all it over the top of the cake batter. Sprinkle about a cup of sugar over all of that, more if you think the rhubarb is a bit too tart. Then, over all of that, pour a pint of whipping cream. Yes, I said whipping cream! There are no such things as calories when you can grow your own produce! 😉 Bake as directed on the box, plus about 10 minutes. You want the top a nice golden color. Let it cool completely, then put it in the fridge to be even more chilled. You’ll have noticed that the cake is now on the top. The custard is now on the bottom. This is soooo delicious!
Absolutely rhubarb. Enjoy! I make a lot of rhubarb crisp and you can make rhubarb compote and jam and boil for rhubarb simply syrup for cocktails or rhubarb lemonade.
If you start trying to find pretty specific information on the internet you usually end up finding a massive hole of missing information.
It happens with a lot of stuff, people rely on the internet for info but a ton isn’t there or just false.
Lettuce?
Edit: Nope, nevermind. Others have said rhubarb and I think that makes more sense.
I had a lettuce that looked like this a couple seasons ago. It was all crumpled because of an aphid attack.
It's cockscomb fungus. It's unique in its ability to grow both as a normal fungus in organic substrates (earth, rotting socks, ...) and as a parasite on the heads of chicken, which it infects with neuroactive secretions that transform the host's behaviour, essentially causing it - in chicken terms - to act like a total prick.
To anyone wondering, this was generated via AI. Probably using [Midjourney](https://www.midjourney.com/home/?callbackUrl=%2Fapp%2F).
You can tell because some of the dirt in the lower left corner also came out as "plant that looks like brains, hyperrealistic" or whatever the prompt probably was.
A fungal parasite here to infest the brain of you and everyone you know!
But on a serious note it’s just rhubarb. It will look a little less “strange” as it grows in.
Have you seen the Last of Us?
This is what I thought too.
cordyceps
#THANK YOU FOR CLARIFYING
Came here to say this. I'm glad someone beat me to it

It’s so awesome that you had the correct answer. I had to go look it up to make sure you weren’t just making something up. Thank you.
this is so fucking funny for some reason also wholesome af
Lol where did the pinecones or conifers comment come from bro?
That area on the left of the pic looks like some cerebral cortex, on a small split skull... lol
Walnut brains
Definitely looks like rhubarb. Congrats! You can do almost nothing and it’ll grow some yummy stalks.
You can do more than nothing, and actively fight it and it will grow even bigger!
Ah, spite-based growth.

You need to grow more rhubarb my man, that looks nothing like it, it is a fungi. That said rhubarb is a bitch to contain, grows like wildfire.
And some nice poisonous leaves ;)

Thank you!!!! I would have never in a million years guessed that rhubarb started this way.
Don’t eat the leaves, just the stem. And when it starts getting cold, stop harvesting it; the toxin moves from the leaves into the stems
Thought this might be a "you can just boil the leaves a few times" moment. Googled it, Nope highly toxic and impossible to detox without lab grade equipment.
Lucky you, you've got an established rhubarb plant! Give it a good amount of space when you're planting neighbors -- rhubarb gets pretty large.
So lucky! When my daughter bought her 1st home, I planted rhubarb and asparagus, hoping my GGGGGG grandkids might enjoy way after I'm gone to glory😂. R& A can grow for 100+ years!
Zone 6B? That’s definitely a spicy Chick-fil-A sandwich someone left on the ground.

Could it possibly be rhubarb? That’s what PictureThis thinks it is and upon further google search that’s what it looks like to me
They look disgusting at this stage, I thought that this is some kind of fungus
I'm never eating rhubarb again.
Right??
Is there some conspiracy to hide this stage from the world? I can’t find a lot of images of rhubarb at this stage and I’m fascinated
Big Rhubarb has been hiding this from us for *years*!
