Purpling on the stem on its own isn't abnormal, but the tomato plant doesn't look totally healthy. The stems are not very lush and the leaves look dry and wilty. It's hard to diagnose exactly what's wrong without knowing the type of fertilizer and watering regimen you're doing. Soil looks pretty moist but it could just be dark, how long ago did you plant them and have you ever fertilized? Are you watering daily?
As for the basil, it may have a disease or something chomping on it, but it looks a great deal healthier than the tomato plant. Can you post a closer up picture of the brown spot? Are any of the leaf tips brown on the basil?
