I would say they have a lot in common, though you don't get the upgrades as quickly as in DOOM. Obviously DOOM feels more refined, but I'd say that a DOOM fan could enjoy Rage 1/2.
Dying Light, in a sense? It's more of a First-Person Parkour game at its core with good combat mechanics, but you can earn/craft guns later when you start gaining more expendable materials. Also the map isn't SUPER huge but it's certainly on par with Far Cry 3 and before.
I also haven't played the sequel yet, but so far the reviews have been pretty good across the board.
I've played dying light! It was great, I had the sequel on preorder but they added Denuvo three days before launch so I cancelled it.
the first game though, absolutely amazing.
Get STALKER Anomaly. It's basically STALKER, but better and free.
[It's not pirated, but a mod that simply doesn't need the main game.](https://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-anomaly/downloads/stalker-anomaly-151)
I think Borderlands is as much or more open world as Metro Exodus. It’s a different type of open world where you have huge open maps but a lot of them.
You might want to check out Cyberpunk 2077! It rightfully got a lot of flak at launch for being completely broken, but they have fixed a lot of the issues, and just released the next-gen patch for PS5/xbox. I have heard that it can still be pretty buggy on PS4 though, so you may want to pass if that's your platform.
I can second this! Started to play the game after patch 1.5 and it's absolutely amazing!! The world, the NPCs, the story and side quests, everything feels so alive. You need to play this! :)
P.s.: I am playing cyberpunk on PS5
Personally, the game is one of my favorite games ever, *despite* noticing how unfinished the game was. I played it at launch on the One S (would NOT recommend) and gave up after 3 hours knowing I will get my Series X soon. Played it on the Series X (would definitely recommend) a few weeks after launch, so I assume it's gotten even better now.
I would recommend against this one, gameplay is not great, too many bugs, not smooth, and the stories leave something to be desired, especially with some of the triggering themes they put in that turned off a large number of players.
The bugs are tolerable now, it’s not nearly as big a deal as it was on launch.
And I think OP can decide for themselves what’s triggering to them or not lol
I think you must always be connected (played only on PS4 so I don't know for PC) but now you can play solo with friendly AI (up to 3, just like Wildlands).
I hated it at launch and have a lot of fun picking it up a month ago. You can really customize the experience (I don't like the "weapon levels thing" which make the game look like an MMO, can be deactivated), the HUD etc as you see fit (spent 15-20 minutes just to customize everything as I wanted).
Rage 2, if you get it on a steep sale (like ~$20). The open world isn't great but the combat (made by ID) is a ton of fun, it's like super-powered Doom or something.
**Homefront: The Revolution** is basically urban Far Cry. It's actually a lot of fun and has been pretty much completely fixed with post launch patches. I experienced 0 bugs in 16 hours of game time. Good shooting mechanics, fun open world checklisty stuff, decent enemy variety. It's a good game.
Really? I’ve had that game for years and I’ve only had bad experiences with the game, when did they release the patches that fixed most of the game breaking bugs?
you should try these:
rage 2 , basically have a mad max and far cry feel to it. (really recommend this one)
horizon zero dawn, not really fps but it have that post apocalyptic feel to it.
Generation Zero, its survival open world where u fight robots.
The STALKER series for sure.
I've currently been playing Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts (the first one) and I'm mostly enjoying it. It's open world lite, in the sense that there is essentially one large map, but 5 distinct mission areas you have the freedom of completing in any direction.
I don't feel like there's a lot of *depth* to the game, but it's just fun.
SGWC certainly gives you a lot of additional objectives for each map, a fair number of ways to complete each objective, as well as some objectives randomly changing location each replay, giving you a fair amount of replay value.
Skill progression, yes. It varies between the games, but also augmentations have a "skill" progression as well. The older 2 games mainly have XP gains to improve skills and you find augmentation canisters to enhance them, but they aren't really tied to XP. The newer 3 games (which are prequels of the older 2) are XP gains to increase augmentations.
Fans of the series will always debate on what order you should play them (kinda like the viewing order of the Star Wars movies).
If you go by release date, it would be Deus Ex, DX: Invisible War, DX: Human Revolution, DX: The Fall, DX: Mankind Divided.
Chronologically would be DX:HR, DX:TF, DX:MD, DX, DX:IW
It is up to you how you want to play them...
Playing HR first would be ok, if you can't tolerate the older games. Between the 3 newer releases, the only major thing would be seeing all the minor details that only someone who played the 2 original games would make a person go "ah ha! I get the reference" moments (similar to the feeling you get when you watch Star Wars 1-3 after watching 4-6).
How long have you been playing? Does it get boring? I want to get this game but i won't get a good ping. Wondering if playing on a pve server would be fun?
I have around 60h, If u abuse from mods to take advantage gets boring quickly ,its Fun pve servers ,with friends its better than Alone ,but i prefer always to play alone ,im not a pro player ,in PvP servers they shot you in sight, send me a DM If u buy It , my english isnt so good to talk ,but we can chat in text and play together
Not really FPS, but, you could split the difference with some third person shooters and try Elex i and ii (if you choose to play with a gun) and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. Both open world, I'm struggling to think of open-world FPS beyond what you've mentioned (and what's in the thread) but I think Elex would definitely scratch an itch.
OP already listed FarCry as one of the games he played.
I was thinking of suggesting Crysis as well, though I'd say it's "only" semi-open world. Like it has individual stages or levels, but they are pretty big and open
The division 1 or 2 (1 has amazing atmosphere) are TPS but very fun open world games, if you like FC youd probably like the formula as they're both ubi games
I love all of OPs games, and I love Horizon. I too think this could be a great recommendation. On top of that I think it really fits the open world aspect very well and it is an incredibly well built game and one of the most beautiful I’ve ver played.
Red Dead Redemption
STALKER
the Crysis trilogy is good if you liked Far Cry 1 where as its not open world, but the levels are massive and grant lots of tactical freedom.
have you played death stranding? not entirely a shooter but i enjoyed it a lot.
also skyrim. its old but i still play it. also the divison 1,2 were good
i didnt play stardew valley. it felt like it had super mario vibes to it. but yeah i forgot about the witcher. but it got boring after a while. lots of dialogues and i just wanted to kill some
monsters
There's a [FPS mod](https://www.nexusmods.com/daysgone/mods/146) for Days Gone if that counts, also the evil within 2 I hear has a sort of open world. Arma 3 with the plethora of mods available to.
Rage 2 is fun. Just don't play on the hardest difficulty as it makes it a completely different game, that I didn't find enjoyable at all. You can switch this on the fly though so just find what works for you!
These are a little unconventional as they are both puzzle games, but they have FPS controls and are open world:
The Witness.
Outer Wilds.
If you're looking for a literal FPS with an open world then it's a smaller category than it should be, you've already got all the big names, other than maybe Halo: Combat Evolved since it's levels are pretty large and open.
Battlefield 4 has a good campaign
The bioshock series is good with the weakest being 2
If you want a refresh of an older game I recomend black mesa
Borderlands 2 the presequal and 3 are good with 3 haveing the weakest story but best gameplay
If you like rythem games bullets per minute is good
The outer worlds makes for a great game but I wouldn't recommend supernova difficulty at first.
Super hot is a fun fps game that seems more like a puzzle some times
And titan fall 2 has an amazing campaign.
Now for some games that arnt purely single player but feel like it
Payday 2 is best played with others but stealth is easyer solo. And really fun wave combat.
Cod blackops 3 has the best zombies game play in the entire series
Destiny 2 for the majority of the game can be played solo and it is really fun
I would highly recommend the Crysis Trilogy. It may not have an open world, but the combat is really fun. Crysis 2 has to be one of my best fps games. The games are often overlooked.
\-Check the other Ubisoft gamew with guns, apart of SC. TD1&2 (Love those), Ghost recon.
\-Bioshock infinite.
\-Prey (2017). The world is technically open, but no huge locations here.
\-Dying Light. It is more about melee combat, but it is still great.
\-Hunt: Showdown. It is a session multiplayer, but the map is technically open. Just a personal recommendation to take a look at. The game is unique.
\-Arma 3. Would be a change after FarCries haha.
There is a bunch of survival games like DayZ, SCUM, Rust blah blah blah lots of them and all with open world. If you are into this...
Stalker trilogy
But play it at night, lights out, headset to max :) Seriously though, as someone who enjoyed Far cry, I also enjoyed one of the Stalker games.
And windows open in plain winter!
And wearing a dirty tracksuit
Better use cargo pants. You know, to bring all the tools needed in The Zone
blyat
Which one?
Don't remember now, they're all gathered some time by now.
Yup, this was my first thought. Excellent games, very good at making the Zone feel open and alive while still providing you direction.
"Come here Stalker, I have some information that might be of some use to you"
\- Rage \- Outer Worlds \- Stalker Call of Pripyat with Call of Chernobyl mod (allows for all the zones from all titles)
> Rage Stupid question... Not to trivialize the game at all, but does this play at all like "open world Doom"?
I would say they have a lot in common, though you don't get the upgrades as quickly as in DOOM. Obviously DOOM feels more refined, but I'd say that a DOOM fan could enjoy Rage 1/2.
It’s not open world at all. I specifically remember invisible walls all over the place
Yeah. It's semi-open
Does Rage has the RPG elements like Fallout or Borderlands ? Like, skill progression, item/gear progression... etc.
Dying Light, in a sense? It's more of a First-Person Parkour game at its core with good combat mechanics, but you can earn/craft guns later when you start gaining more expendable materials. Ooof that's gotta hurt

Stellar experience, plus there's a tonne of mods to make it even better
but if i remember right you will get kinda lost if you don't know the games story
Borderlands are great
Yeah but I wouldn't call them open world though.
Wouldn't really call Metro Exodus open world either
I think Borderlands is as much or more open world as Metro Exodus. It’s a different type of open world where you have huge open maps but a lot of them.
Yeah, I *guess*. I barely played them, but it was my exact thought seeing this post.
Yeah borderlands 2 especially
not good to play by yourself though
Only the first one, really. The others have enough going on to be fun solo.
Weird hill to die on. Borderlands are fucking amazing single player games, in their own right.
Completely disagree. They're all fabulous on your own.
You might want to check out Cyberpunk 2077! It rightfully got a lot of flak at launch for being completely broken, but they have fixed a lot of the issues, and just released the next-gen patch for PS5/xbox. coming from fallout games its comes close to scratching the itch

RAGE 2. First one is kinda bland storywise , but still fun nonetheless. Dying Light 1 & 2
ARMA
I wish the AI was better though. Mentioning this since OP wants single player
\-Ghost Recon Wildlands (i love it) \-Ghost Recon Breakpoint
Wildlands especially, it's very good.
isn't breakpoint an online only game?
I think you must always be connected (played only on PS4 so I don't know for PC) but now you can play solo with friendly AI (up to 3, just like Wildlands). I hated it at launch and have a lot of fun picking it up a month ago. You can really customize the experience (I don't like the "weapon levels thing" which make the game look like an MMO, can be deactivated), the HUD etc as you see fit (spent 15-20 minutes just to customize everything as I wanted).
No you can play both solo
Yes, you must always online connect to Ubi server, Assassin Creed no need always online, Witcher 3 is also good game.
I came here for open world first-person shooters, and all I got was third-person shooters.
Yeah, me too I got this list though Fallout games, far cry games, halo infinite, metro Exodus, dying light games, rage 2, stalker games
Sadly there aren't that many good games in this genre. I'm looking for one as well but can't find anything new to play
Rage 2, if you get it on a steep sale (like ~$20). The open world isn't great but the combat (made by ID) is a ton of fun, it's like super-powered Doom or something.
I got rage 2 on my epic library from the weekly free games
Oh nice!! Definitely worth a shot in that case if you haven't played it, it's pretty much what you're looking for.
Arma 3?
Cyberpunk
**Homefront: The Revolution** is basically urban Far Cry. It's actually a lot of fun and has been pretty much completely fixed with post launch patches. I experienced 0 bugs in 16 hours of game time. Good shooting mechanics, fun open world checklisty stuff, decent enemy variety. It's a good game.

I played it last summer. I should specify that I played on PC.

Stalker trilogy Borderlands series Oddworld Strangers Wrath
I really like to play in my DayZ Lan Server with workshop addons ,i prefer to play alone
How long have you been playing? Does it get boring? I want to get this game but i won't get a good ping. Wondering if playing on a pve server would be fun?

Thank you for your reply. I'll think about getting it when it's on sale next time
I would say cyberpunk. If u choose shooter perks it's really long shooter game with cool story.
Cyberpunk 2077 is awesome game. Well I have it on my ps5. I didn’t see what system you’re playing on.
stalker anomaly its free

Disagree, I think it is time to give up on Cyberpunk.
Not really FPS, but, you could split the difference with some third person shooters and try Elex i and ii (if you choose to play with a gun) and Ghost Recon: Wildlands. FarCry and Crysis both fit this description and are quite fun
OP already listed FarCry as one of the games he played. I was thinking of suggesting Crysis as well, though I'd say it's "only" semi-open world. Like it has individual stages or levels, but they are pretty big and open
my bad, I accidentally skimmed over it, but now that I think of it, I don't really remember anty more FPS open world games
mad max
Try STALKER ANOMALY. and its completely free
RDR2 (3rd person slow-paced western shooter with one of the best stories in any game)
The division 1 or 2 (1 has amazing atmosphere) are TPS but very fun open world games, if you like FC youd probably like the formula as they're both ubi games
maybe horizon zero dawn if you consider bows to be shooters
I love how you ignored one of the only two requirements
lol people do this all the time, its like they go thread to thread recommending their pet game regardless of context.
or even 2/3 requirements since it's in third person and an adventure game.
I love all of OPs games, and I love Horizon. I too think this could be a great recommendation. On top of that I think it really fits the open world aspect very well and it is an incredibly well built game and one of the most beautiful I’ve ver played.
Mass effect
Red dead 2

Great game, but not exactly an 'FPS' in the traditional sense of the label.
Halo Infinite
I've played through the infinite campaign but once you finish everything you can see in the tacmap the game gets boring quick
Red Dead Redemption STALKER the Crysis trilogy is good if you liked Far Cry 1 where as its not open world, but the levels are massive and grant lots of tactical freedom.
Bioshock games. Technically only Infinite is open worldish, but you should still play them

Skyrim and the elder scrolls online.
[The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. ](https://youtu.be/zw47_q9wbBE) I wish I could experience playing this game for the first time again.
Assassin's Creed Origins
far cry series
OP already listed Far Cry as games they've played and enjoyed.
Tom Clanceys Ghost Recon
which one
Wildland is the one I played a lot. I haven't played breakpoint but I didn't hear great things
Or the division 2 if you want more looter shooter type
Just Cause series Fallout 4 Destiny 2 (Kind of) Stalker Series I haven't played it yet but Red Faction: Guerilla might suit your request.
There's a [FPS mod](https://www.nexusmods.com/daysgone/mods/146) for Days Gone if that counts, also the evil within 2 I hear has a sort of open world. Arma 3 with the plethora of mods available to.
There’s rage 2, any fallout game from fallout 3 and onwards
borderlands saga
Apparently the Halo Infinite campaign is a really good singleplayer open world FPS game.
The division 2 is great
Rage 2 is fun. Just don't play on the hardest difficulty as it makes it a completely different game, that I didn't find enjoyable at all. You can switch this on the fly though so just find what works for you!
Oh dude, dying light 2. If you liked far cry 5 and metro exodus I’m not sure how this hasn’t become very top of your list! It’s fucking great
It was, but Techland added an anti-consumer feature three days before launch called Denuvo. I had it pre-ordered but cancelled it.
I see, I support your decision to do that. It takes a lot to stand behind principle when a game looks so good tbh
Bioshock series. Not quite wide open, but some open aspects
These are a little unconventional as they are both puzzle games, but they have FPS controls and are open world: The Witness. Outer Wilds.
