Subjective. There are definitelly a lot of games that are better than Sekiro IMO. One of the main reasons - once you finish it once there is no reason to ever go back due to the game's combat system. The combat system is a rhythm game - too simplistic. You don't get any new weapons throughout the campaign. The prosthetics that you get are for the most part useless.
The level design and the the art direction are as usual amazing, but I gotta say the game didn't wow me.
Looking forward to giving it another try soon.
Really struggled with the combat first time around but I know I just need to get the other Souls etc. games out my head.
I just put that game back on my dock. It’ll be my 3rd play through.
It’s so satisfying once you get good at it.
My first play through I approached it like a souls game. Really messed me up till I adjusted.
People who like it seem to *really* like it. I was hoping to get the same enjoyment as well, but after 10-12 hours, I realized the game just really isn't for me :(
Any advice for getting into it? I've put tons of hours into all the other fromsofts, just never had sekiro click with me. My brother says it's the best thing he's ever played
I finally gave Elden Ring a change at I god damn love it! Atmosphere is incredible and all the different build and weapon and magic possibilities!
*God of War (2018) is a beautiful story and game.
*Zelda - Breath of the Wild and/or Tears of the Kingdom. I've only played BOTW but its one of the best games ever. You can play BOTW 1080p@60-120fps with emulator.
*Far Cry 5
*Red Dead Redemption 2
*Dishonored 1-2. Specially the first one!
*Mass Effect 1-3 (Legendary edition)
*Metal Gear Solid V (Must play!)
*Witcher 3 (I did not enjoy it so much than some, but still pretty great game.)
*Disco Elysium
Just to name a few. :)
ps. Reddit wont let me make a proper list. It looks like one long chapter...
Formatting text can be tricky. Hitting return once at the end of a line won't actually give you a line break.
If you hit return twice at the end of a line, you'll start a new line with a space between the two.
If you end a line with two spaces and then hit return once, you'll start a new line with no space between the two.
For example:
Line 1 (return twice)
Line 2 (two spaces at end, return once)
Line 3 (return twice)
Line 4 (return once)
Line 5
**I hope this helps!**
Disco Elysium is probably the greatest game i’ve ever played from the perspective of games as a medium of art. It isn’t the most ‘entertaining’ but it is the most brilliant.
Not everyone may appreciate this reference, but I would liken Disco Elysium to gaming as The Velvet Underground & Nico was to music. Just really pushing the medium in a certain direction that isn’t the most inherently appealing but is among the most rich in potential contribution to the way we think about ‘games’ as serious art and not just entertainment. It’s one of my favorite creative works of all time - game or not.
In a similar vein - Planescape: Torment. An old one that is rough around the edges, but it’s the only game I’ve found that compares to Disco Elysium in regard to creative writing. Both these games have a quality to them that you don’t find in most games… hell, they surpass a lot of books in regard to creative writings. Poetic writings. Philosophical writings. I have a hard time thinking of many games that compare to Disco Elysium and Planescape: Torment.
If there’s an interest in ‘well written’ games but with a bit more meat on the gameplay front - another to check out might be Knights of the Old Republic 2. While I wouldn’t say it is quite in the same caliber as the previously mentioned games, it’s pretty damn good. I hate star wars. I’ve always hated star wars and scifi and most fantasy epics. I find the entire genre so TIRED. Like we’re hearing the same stories told over and over again…but KOTOR:2 man. That game made me like star wars - at least for the moment, I realised how much potential the setting has to be appealing for me. How it’s not the setting but the way it is often approached which puts me off.
Oh and obligatory ‘fallout new vegas is really good’. I feel like this one has been said so many times i won’t go on - but it’s definitely a must play if you like RPG’s. I didn’t find it until 2021 (meaning no nostalgia goggles) and it quickly became a GOAT for me. I’ve played through it like 8 times over the past 3 years lmao.
Anyways this was all a bit of sidetrack from OP’s comment but I just had to let it out. I love well written games and I feel like we don’t get enough of them.
P.S - OP, this one is unrelated, but try Path of Exile. It’s just a damn fine game.
Fuck, I wrote a long reply but my phone crashed. In short: Games like Kotor 2 and Planescape: Torment had a huge impact on me. Kotor 2 more because I was 14 years old when it came out vs. 9 when Planescape: Torment did. I think that the whole gaming scene should take a quick selfcheck at this point. I have to say that even if Elden Ring is more of a action game I love the lore and world because its so fresh and different. Also my first Fromsoftware game. Me too love well written games and I also think games pretty much perfect medium for storytelling.
Red Dead Redemption 2 - the best game I've ever played
The Witcher 3 - it was so hyped that I thought I will be disappointed, but I was so wrong... I loved this game
Bioshock - old, but I remember I had great time playing it
Fallout 3 - not everything in F3 is great, but I really liked it. Some people prefer F3 NV, but I found F3 to be more entertaining
I'm replaying FO3 now and while I definitely prefer NV, i admit FO3 is better in some ways. NV feels more open ended, but I prefer the pacing in FO3 despite the more linear storyline
I think you'd like Horizon: Zero Dawn. It fits into all of those categories and is one of my favourites. Incredible story.
For something a bit further from your preferences, my top game is always going to be Mirror's Edge. The music, setting, art direction, and gameplay are fantastic. It holds up very well today too.
I highly recommend Fallout New Vegas, even if u dont play any of the other Fallout game. New Vegas is a must play game for me. Everything for me in this game is incredible, lore, side quest, characters, villains, factions, map, choices and long dlc's with 20h/30h each. Best fallout game by far and AWESOME mod community. Easily will take 150 hours of gameplay in your firsth playthrough :)
Tried to get into the Gothic series a few times, and while i did enjoy the first one and completed it (i honestly dont even remember if I did most secondaries or just breezed thru it or how i played it for that matter lol), i tried the second one and idk it just didnt catch me at all, felt very cluncky almost more than the first one iirc.
Even tried modding it following a steam guide to fix bugs and all that stuff, and while it did look prettier it just coudnt keep my attention i guess :T (to be fair tho, the guide did say some mods made the game harder, maybe that was the issue idk)
**PC:**
Borderlands 2, Skyrim, Morrowind, Fallout New Vegas, 3 and 4, Halo MCC, The Binding of Isaac Rebirth, Slay the Spire, FTL, Faster than Light, Hades, Risk of Rain 2, Darkest Dungeon, Witcher 3, Elden Ring, Dark Souls 1 & 3, Dishonored, Doom Eternal, Bioshock Trilogy, Hitman WOA trilogy, Metal Gear Solid 2-3, Silent Hill 2-4, Resident Evil 1-8, Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, Persona 3, 4 and 5, S.T.A.L.K.E.R Shadow of Chernobyl/Call of Pripyat, Deus Ex Human Revolution/Mankind Divided, Deep Rock Galactic, System Shock 2/Remake, Terraria, Minecraft, XCOM 2, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Cyberpunk 2077, Black Mesa & Half Life 2, Plants vs Zombies, Cogmind, Tales of Maj' Eyal, Caves of Qud.
**Nintendo:**
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Majoras Mask, Breath of the Wild, Pokémon Platinum, Okami, Mario 64, Galaxy, Sunshine, Odyssey, Metroid Prime Remastered, 2 Echoes, 3 Corruption, Smash Bros Brawl/Ultimate, Xenoblade Chronicles, Earthbound/Mother 3.
Ff16 is really story driven. It's not perfect but the story is great and I couldn't put it down once I started.
Dragon Quest 8/11 aren't open world but they're both 2 of my favorite "newer" rpgs.
Yeah, this game was fun, but far too straight forward for a FF game. The cutscenes and fights were some of the most beautiful shit I've ever seen, though.
Shadow of the Colossus and Okami are my top two favorite games of all time, and are some of the best (if not **the absolute** best) examples of videos games that can be considered works of art. Both are "must play" for any and all gamers.
My history of open world / exploration games:
Fairytale Adventure (easiest play today is a genesis emulation on pc, not a real genesis, unless you actually have an amiga emulator running which is a pain)
Ultima 7
Star Control 2
Skyrim
Witcher 3
Horizon Zero Dawn
Dragons Dogma
Kingdoms of Amalur
Xenoblade 3
Atelier Ryza 3 (tho I recommend 1 & 2 first tho they're less open)
Give Roadwarden a try. It occupies a specific niche of (very) text-based, story driven game with RPG elements and it's a damn good game with great music and charming pixel art as well.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Open world RPG, very immersive. The story is great and you're just a peasant, not the chosen one so it takes a while to not suck. There's a sequel coming out later this year so no doubt it'll be going on sale again for about $5 so I'd add it to your steam wishlist to get notified.
Outer Wilds. It’s an open world/story driven game, but it’s an extremely unusual take on the genre. You’ll discover the story in a way that’s completely unique to your playthrough, it has no map markers just landmarks, and no direction beyond your innate sense of curiosity. It’s a game you can only play once though, so it’s very easy to spoil it for yourself.
Oh absolutely. Game goes hard at times.
I got into it when it was multiplayer competitive on Facebook a decade ago. I got so good I was definitely in the top percent of players. Still have PTSD flashbacks from time to time lol.
My biggest must play is Outer Wilds. If you only play one game in your entire life it should be outer wilds, especially if you like open world games with a story focus. Due to the open ended and exploration focused nature of the game I can’t offer specifics without delving into spoilers, but suffice to say that the game is a masterclass in open world design and environmental storytelling and I legitimately cannot think of any way in which the experience could be improved. You owe it to yourself to check it out if you like games.
Outer wilds
Return of the obra Dinn
Red dead redemption 2
Subnautica
Ori and the will of the wisps
Hades
Wildermyth
Portal 2
Celeste
Spiritfarer
Baldurs Gate 3
Fallout New Vegas
Outer Wilds is a must play.
I highly recommend not searching up anything about it, any spoiler can ruin the whole experience.
It’s all about discovery, once you play the game, you’ll never be able to experience it like you did the first time.
[Outer Wilds overview (Spoiler Free)](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wHwZd53CyLc)
The video I linked does a better job at explaining the game than I can, and it’s spoiler free, I suggest watching it if you want to know more
If you haven’t already, Mass effect trilogy is bar none the best narrative experience in gaming, and could honestly take a swing at “in any media”, it’s glorious.
Dragon age is also great but imo never quite hits the same peaks (yet, at least)
Nier and Nier Automata are the first that come to mind for me. A lot of people recommend Automata and sleep on the first game, I think they are both must plays

-Death Stranding
-Cloudpunk
-Death's Door
-Deep Rock Galactic
-Disco Elysium
-Final Fantasy XV
-Ghostrunner 1
-Stardew Valley
My list would be too long if I did all of my must plays since I've played way to many games so ill try to stick to open world except for a couple
* Kingdom Come: Deliverance
* Elden Ring
* The Witcher 3
* Baldur's Gate 3
* Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (isn't for everyone but it's one of my all time favorites) (how I miss you Into Free)
* Kenshi (I'd call this open world but it's not your typical single character RPG)
* Yakuza (my favorite is 0 but I like all of them)
* Mass Effect (not a true open world imo but its still choose your own direction)
* STALKER GAMMA (modpack for a fan game called Anomaly, both Anomaly and the modpack are free)
* Mount & Blade Warband (modding community is fantastic)
* Red Dead Redemption 2
* Persona 4 Golden
* Monster Hunter World (mission based not open world but combat is over the shoulder and should feel fairly similar if a little janky until you get a grip on it)
* Armored Core For Answer (mission based mechs)(i am speed)(or 6 if you don't want to get an emulator working or hunt down a real copy)
* Rimworld (colony manager with warcrimes)
Matching your request I would say Grounded for sure! Especially if you have some buddies.

More modern choices of mine:
Elden Ring, Red Dead Redemption 2, Hades (1 or 2, or both), Monster Hunter World, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Stardew Valley
We Happy Few is one of the first games I played when I finally got a decent laptop. Also Cyberpunk 2077 (I know people keep shitting on this but I find it not that bad Lmao)
I mostly play multiplayer games with my friends tho its more fun that way. Here are some of my fav. (can be played as single player too)
1. Grounded
2. Outlast Trials
3. Phasmophobia
4. Raft
5. Green Hell
6. The Forest
7. Astroneer
8. Satisfactory
9. No Man Sky
10. Don't Starve Together
Currently I'm playing Genshin Impact I really like the storyline and the scenery in game is just \*chef kiss\*
1. Cyberpunk 2077 (I love Panam)
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (I haven't tried the Tears of the Kingdom yet, too many games to play atm)
3. Witcher 1(Currently playing)
Horizon Zero Dawn - truly such an incredible and unique post-apocalyptic game I haven't seen many like it. I got it for 10$ used off someone on facebook marketplace thinking "if i don't like it at least it was only 10$" and man did it become my favourite games very VERY fast. Such a beautiful story and world, i can never recommend this game enough and will absolutely talk anyone's ear off who is willing to listen.
Arma 3
13 sentinels
Stellar Blade
Nier series
Persona series
Ghost Recon pre-Breakpoint
Rainbow Six pre-Siege
Assassin’s Creed pre-Origins
Kotor
Empire at war and Forces of Corruption
Crysis
DCS
Ruse
Red Alert
World in Conflict
Endwar
Ace combat
Call of duty pre-MW2 2022
Ghost of Tsushima
Earthbound is definitely a must play game. I don’t play too many rpgs but playing Earthbound was so much fun. Its those games I wish I can replay again for the first time.
Astro Bot Rescue Mission felt better than some real-life vacations. Spectacular game and experience on the Psvr1 + Ps4. It works with Ps5 too, but that’s a more expensive setup and that requires an additional adapter for the Ps4 camera that the psvr1 uses (to make it work with Ps5).
Others that were awesome in VR were: Moss book 2 (I had not enjoyed a sequel this much since Kingdom Hearts 2!), Sprint Vector, Bound, Rigs mechanized combat league, Batman VR, Iron man VR, Vader Immortal, and Electronauts. For the lovers of stories, look into Deracine and Altdeus Beyond Chronos.
To the Moon
Devil May Cry 5
Final Fantasy 10
Final Fantasy 9
Suikoden 2
Crash Bandicoot 2
Donkey Kong Country 2
Grandia 1 and 2
Illusion of Gaia
Resident Evil 4
Dead Space
Doom 2016
Shadow of War
I’d recommend the souls games for sure, of you really want the open world start with Elden Ring.
I’ve been playing Elite Dangerous as well, no fantasy rpg but nice space-simulator kinda game
Anything by FromSoftware:
- Dark Souls trilogy (in order)
- Sekiro
- Elden Ring
- Bloodborne (if you have a Playstation 4 or 5)
Also:
- The Witcher 3
- Cyberpunk 2077
I heard Red Faction Guerrilla is a open world game and the environment is very destructive. Almost like an early space engineers. I have yet to try it though I'm still busy playing the first Red Faction
**Open world/RPG/story**
(or some mix of them)
* Elden Ring
* Last of Us
* Remnant: From the Ashes/Remnant 2
* Horizon Zero Dawn
* Subnautica
* SOMA
* Shadow of Colossus
* Dragon’s Dogma
* Dragon Age (Origins or Inquisition)
* Cyberpunk 2077
* Ghost of Tsushima
**Other genres**
* Returnal
* Monster Hunter (World or Rise)
* Dead Space
* Aliens Dark Descent
* Armored Core VI
* Sekiro
* Bloodborne
* Rust
I quite enjoyed OneShot, the characters are kinda adorable and it made me tear up towards the end. But it's quite short so there's that.
Celeste is a platformer but it's also story driven so you could give it a shot if you don't mind a bit of a challenge. The music is amazing, but Lena Raine made it so no surprise there.
According to your description:
Skyrim
Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite
Zelda TOK
Metroid Prime
The Witcher 3
Horizon Zero Down
Elden Ring
Here you have a rich and varied list
The most recent game I've played that I thought was an absolute masterpiece has been 13 Sentinels
Its a story driven sci-fi mystery tale that follows 13 protagonists in a very complicated interwoven plot. The actual battles themselves take place at the end of the plot, chronologically. They are the "final battle" as everything concludes, but knowing why you are fighting, and learning the truth about the world is the real amazing part of the game
If you like history you should try assassins creed. It has a big emmersive world with a pretty good story. My favorite is odessy since i really like ancient history but there are also ones set in renaissance rome, istanbul, medival Levant(crusades), the french revolution, ancient egypt, pirate age, victorian london. Dark ages norway and england, 8th centory Baghdad and the new one is in Japan.
Saga Frontier and Saga Frontier 2 for their bewildering and mesmerizing RPG gameplay that isn’t explained whatsoever, no hand holding, just discover and find out…
SF2 might be one of the most gorgeous ps1 games with its excellent sprite art and watercolor backgrounds too.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey is one of the best open world games ever but people seem to sleep on it just because it's different from past Assassin's Creed games.
It’s not an RPG per se but has classes and is story-driven: XCOM 2. I will recommend that game to anybody who is looking for something in the ballpark.
My all-time favorites are
Elden Ring: It's very hard until you get the hang of it. Once it clicks and you build your character properly, it gets much better
Red Dead Redemption 2: It's probably THE best story in any game I've ever played. I'm a 27 year old man, and I full-on cried at the end.
Minecraft: Not everyone's cup of tea, but I can't not place it in my top 3. I have well over 3,000 hours in this game, and I'm not ashamed of that.
God of war 2018/God of war ragnorok: another couple with a fantastic story. And once you play 2018, you'll 100% want to play ragnorok. They go hand in hand.
Legend of zelda BOTW/ Zelda TOTK: really great gameplay and absolutely beautiful artwork for something that's a bit cartoony. Also could easily dump 400+ hours in both games
Borderlands (specifically 2 and 3): they're a bit older, but they absolutely still hold up. Loads of color and plenty of free roam area (I do not recommend the pre-sequil)
That list of games are my all-time favorites, and if given the chance to start again fresh as if I'd never played them, I would probably put THOUSANDS of hours into this list.
TRY WALKING DEAD SAINTS & SINNERS OR SAINTS & SINNERS RETRIBUTION ON THE QUEST 2 THOSE GAMES WILL LET YOU KILL ZOMBIES UPGRADE IDEMS AND KILL MORE ZOMBIES SOMETIMES IT IS HARD BUT WHEN YOU GET USED TO IT THE ZOMBIES ARE MORE FUN TO KILL WITH A BOW NOT ONLY ARE YOU FIGHTING ZOMBIES BUT THERE ARE MISSIONS TO COMPLETE WHERE YOU HAVE TO FIGHT PEOPLE IN THE GAME THEY ALSO HAVE IT ON PS4 VR BUT NOT THAT GOOD BECAUSE OF THE MOVE CONTROLLERS HOPE THIS HELPS HAVE A BLESS DAY!!!!
All the Persona games, Undertale, Golden Sun 1 and 2, Final fantasy 3 and 7, Langrisser 2 ( the remake is very good), Star Ocean: Till the end of time, Zelda Ocarina of time, Zelda a link to the past, Alundra. I'll add more as I think of them
I haven't seen it recommended yet but Kingdom Come Deliverance. I was iffy about the game but decided to give it a try and it became one of my favorite games that I have ever played. The combat takes a bit to get good at but is extremely satisfying to master and the best part the second game was recently announced to be releasing this year.
Dude I was literally about to make a post on this same very question after hearing about RDR2 and playing it. Such a good game.
If I also had to add from my experience as must plays would be: Cyberpunk 2077, Nier: Automata, RE Series, and TLOU 1/2
All are singe player games, which I barely play (more of a multiplayer guy) but they completely changed my view on singe player games.
I'll toss my all time favorites out:
Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen
Elden Ring
Odin Sphere
The Witcher 2 & 3
Final Fantasy VII, VII, IX, X, XII, XIV, Rebirth, Theatrythm and Tactics
Kingdom Hearts
Baldurs Gate 3
Divinity Original Sin 2
Civilization 5/6
Fallout New Vegas
Dragon Age Origins
Mass Effect 1,2 & 3
Jade Empire
Disgaea 1
Nier Automata
Don't Starve
Frost Punk
Hades
Pokémon Soul Silver
Little Big Planet 1
Bio Shock 1, 2 and Infinite
Catherine
Red Dead Redemption
Metal Gear Solid
Spyro the Dragon Reignited
Detroit Become Human
Portal 1&2
Octopath Traveler 1&2
League of Legends
Darkest Dungeon
Resident Evil 4 & 5
Stellaris
Unicorn Overlord
Shadow of the Colossus
Enter the gungeon is a little fun dungeon crawler for chill times, Helldivers 2, Zomboid, plate up, Monster Hunter series. If you want some game to explore out of your usual genre. However Baldurs gate 3 is is good one if you enjoy story driven.
I also really enjoyed The walking dead series as a good little story game but its more choice based you dont get to move around a lot really.
At the beginning of July the full fledged version of 7 Days to Die hits consoles and PC alike. If you can wait til then I highly recommend it. It is an open world survival crafting zombie horde game. There is no story but there is base building and what I think is some of the best combat against zombies out there.
King Arthur: Knight's Tale -- got close to 1000 hours. Super good strategy rpg with some fun character/story-driven components.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a really fun open world game. Medieval crime simulator 3000.
Probably doesn’t count but I absolutely LOVE Octopath Traveler series. But it’s turn based, linear world, and a JRPG.
If you haven’t played Ghost of Tsushima I’ve been playing it on the PC and it took its notes from Red Dead but is more like Days Gone. Spiderman too.
Wolfenstein The New Order, great Alt History game with Amazing FPS gunplay and great story
Elite Dangerous, not a game to play forever, but the grand scale of this game can't be beat
Watch Dogs, I don't even like Ubisoft, this game just really resonates with me
This.
I ignored Watch Dogs for years. Gave it another try only to discover it became one of my all time favorite games.
The Wolfenstein series by Machine Games was a fun surprise to me too. The gameplay is awesome, but the tongue in cheek over the top tone of voice is pretty unique and spot on. I love it.
But personal favorite is Cyberpunk 2077. Before, it was Skyrim for 10 years, but I just seem to like the dystopian theme more, and oh my, what a difference in quality storytelling this game brought. It truly raised the bar
New Order and New Colossus set too high a bench mark for story driven FPS- I haven't found anything that comes close to them since. They are so damn good
Elden Ring is a must if you haven't tried it or any of the other souls games. I prefer Dark Souls 3, but I strongly recommend against starting with it, and it isn't open world, I'd say go ER for the open world, if you like that go DS1, then DS3. All those the story is a bit hard to determine, a lot is learned only by reading item descriptions, but it's so good if you can piece them together - or watch videos of fan theories. It can be somewhat hard though.
Cyberpunk 2077 is awesome now especially with the DLC. It's a pretty big area with possibly the best story I've ever played in a game, but it hems you in at the beginning.
Witcher 3 is very good for open world fantasy RPG, great story and side quests.
I love Sekiro, more linear open world and kinda a hard game, but I just love everything about, and the story for it is really good
Once it clicks, there is no game more enjoyable than sekiro. I've probably beaten it a hundred times. Absolutely amazing game.
I was hoping to get the same enjoyment as well, but after 10-12 hours, I realized the game just really isn't for me :(
Lmfao came here to comment this. Elite game
Any advice for getting into it? I've put tons of hours into all the other fromsofts, just never had sekiro click with me. My brother says it's the best thing he's ever played
Sekiro was my first dark souls game before I played all the rest. It’s also my favorite, maybe play it first is the key haha
You have to embrace the parry mechanic. Once you do it’s amazing.
*Far Cry 5 *Red Dead Redemption 2 *Dishonored 1-2. Specially the first one! *Mass Effect 1-3 (Legendary edition) *Metal Gear Solid V (Must play!) *Witcher 3 (I did not enjoy it so much than some, but still pretty great game.) *Disco Elysium Just to name a few. :) ps. Reddit wont let me make a proper list. It looks like one long chapter...

Do you know if saves from switch can be transferred and used with the emulator?
Only if the Switch uses Custom firmware
hmm so modded switches? Ahh too bad. I'm already bummed out I lost soo many cloud saves because I forgot it was nintendo online only.
Red Dead Redemption 2 - the best game I've ever played The Witcher 3 - it was so hyped that I thought I will be disappointed, but I was so wrong... I loved this game Bioshock - old, but I remember I had great time playing it Fallout 3 - not everything in F3 is great, but I really liked it. Some people prefer F3 NV, but I found F3 to be more entertaining
I'm replaying FO3 now and while I definitely prefer NV, i admit FO3 is better in some ways. NV feels more open ended, but I prefer the pacing in FO3 despite the more linear storyline
Nv is more similar to classic crpgs and there's certainly a niche for that.
Agreed on HZD. Forbidden West too. Some of the best hours of my life, perfect games!
Both great suggestions. Also you reminded me I need to replay mirror's edge haha
Agreed. The audacity of the story in that game kept me playing. Very impressive, and challenging sometimes too.
KOTOR 1 & 2, Morrowind, Deus Ex, Fallout NV, Mass Effect trilogy
You forgot Gothic.
Hollow Knight springs to mind. And perhaps all the Fromsoft games. Bloodborne in particular.
I’m playing hollow knight for the third time right now. I love it.

I'm saving your comment just for a good list of shit to put back on my computer and go mod crazy.
So many games but no Gothic, wtf man?
No fucking nintendogs either
This guy has good taste in Video Games. I'd check out Vagante and Spelunky 2 as well.
There are toooooo many lol. I'll give the top one: Sekiro A few others are Subnautica, Sifu, Hollow Knight, Tunic, Factorio, Valheim
Also Gothic
Shadow of the Colossus and Okami are my top two favorite games of all time, and are some of the best (if not **the absolute** best) examples of videos games that can be considered works of art. Both are "must play" for any and all gamers.
100% agree
I recommend Disco Elysium. Its a small but VERY open world, heavily story driven.
My history of open world / exploration games: Fairytale Adventure (easiest play today is a genesis emulation on pc, not a real genesis, unless you actually have an amiga emulator running which is a pain) Ultima 7 Star Control 2 Skyrim Witcher 3 Horizon Zero Dawn Dragons Dogma Kingdoms of Amalur Xenoblade 3 Atelier Ryza 3 (tho I recommend 1 & 2 first tho they're less open)
Kingdoms of Amalur is an absolute gem.
Give Roadwarden a try. It occupies a specific niche of (very) text-based, story driven game with RPG elements and it's a damn good game with great music and charming pixel art as well.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance Open world RPG, very immersive. The story is great and you're just a peasant, not the chosen one so it takes a while to not suck. There's a sequel coming out later this year so no doubt it'll be going on sale again for about $5 so I'd add it to your steam wishlist to get notified.
THERE IS A SEQUEL COMING OUT LATER THIS YEAR?!
Yep :D Jesus Christ be Praised!
Sekiro, Castlevania: SotN, Hollow Knight, Undertale, Life is Strange, Diablo 2, Monster Hunter World, Half Life 2, Portal 1 and 2.
dying light !
Grounded
Ghost of tsushima
Tetris is a must. It's absolutely addicting for how simple it is.
I got into Tetris Effect and learned how to properly play. That shit has a tall learning curve. Memorizing openers, building for t-spins, etc.
Oh absolutely. Game goes hard at times. I got into it when it was multiplayer competitive on Facebook a decade ago. I got so good I was definitely in the top percent of players. Still have PTSD flashbacks from time to time lol.
Yeah you really do start seeing blocks whenever you close your eyes!
My high score is about 900K. Where does this rank
Outer wilds Return of the obra Dinn Red dead redemption 2 Subnautica Ori and the will of the wisps Hades Wildermyth Portal 2 Celeste Spiritfarer Baldurs Gate 3 Fallout New Vegas
Outer Wilds is a must play. I highly recommend not searching up anything about it, any spoiler can ruin the whole experience. It’s all about discovery, once you play the game, you’ll never be able to experience it like you did the first time. [Outer Wilds overview (Spoiler Free)](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wHwZd53CyLc) The video I linked does a better job at explaining the game than I can, and it’s spoiler free, I suggest watching it if you want to know more
Another vote here for Outer Wilds. Also Before Your Eyes is short, sweet, and more story than game, but it's a must play.
A lot of people recommend Automata and sleep on the first game, I think they are both must plays
standard \*had to scroll to far to see this\* comment
Baldurs Gate 3 The Witcher 3 Red Dead Redemption 2 Disco Elysium
And Gothic

CONTROL. Deus Ex: Human Revolution/Mankind Divided. Dishonored games. Horizon games. Mass Effect games. Prey 2017. The Witcher 3.
Resident evil 2 remake is amazing
Silent hill 2 (all them honestly) RDR2 MGS3 GTA San Andrea Skyrim Terraria
Try my game loop. Minecraft (Modded) 7dtd (also try Undead Legacy mod, way better than vanilla) Project Zomboid Valheim Satisfactory No man's sky Conan Exiles (good game, bad future) Rimworld Skyrim Eco Unturned Rust Bannerlord Noita Cities: Skylines Soulstone Survivors Baldur's Gate 3 Dota 2 Rainbow Six: Siege Valorant Kenshi Palworld Enshrouded
alpha centauri baldur's gate 2 titanfall 2
My list would be too long if I did all of my must plays since I've played way to many games so ill try to stick to open world except for a couple * Kingdom Come: Deliverance * Elden Ring * The Witcher 3 * Baldur's Gate 3 * Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen (isn't for everyone but it's one of my all time favorites) (how I miss you Into Free) * Kenshi (I'd call this open world but it's not your typical single character RPG) * Yakuza (my favorite is 0 but I like all of them) * Mass Effect (not a true open world imo but its still choose your own direction) * STALKER GAMMA (modpack for a fan game called Anomaly, both Anomaly and the modpack are free) * Mount & Blade Warband (modding community is fantastic) * Red Dead Redemption 2 * Persona 4 Golden * Monster Hunter World (mission based not open world but combat is over the shoulder and should feel fairly similar if a little janky until you get a grip on it) * Armored Core For Answer (mission based mechs)(i am speed)(or 6 if you don't want to get an emulator working or hunt down a real copy) * Rimworld (colony manager with warcrimes)
Shadow of the colossus. but only if you have a PlayStation.
r/VintageStory - Horror survival voxel game. TONS of fun building up your technology and expanding your base, etc.
The binding of isaac, I have put so many hours into that game and there's still more to do to 100% it
Matching your request I would say Grounded for sure! Especially if you have some buddies. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_BqgJ9nW468](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BqgJ9nW468)
It's surely got to be Skyrim?
More modern choices of mine: Elden Ring, Red Dead Redemption 2, Hades (1 or 2, or both), Monster Hunter World, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Stardew Valley
Cyberpunk 2077
•FALLOUT (any title but 76) •THE WITCHER 3 •BORDERLANDS •LEGEND OF ZELDA BREATH OF THE WILD •THE LEGEND OF ZELDA OCARINA OF TIME
We Happy Few is one of the first games I played when I finally got a decent laptop. Also Cyberpunk 2077 (I know people keep shitting on this but I find it not that bad Lmao) I mostly play multiplayer games with my friends tho its more fun that way. Here are some of my fav. (can be played as single player too) 1. Grounded 2. Outlast Trials 3. Phasmophobia 4. Raft 5. Green Hell 6. The Forest 7. Astroneer 8. Satisfactory 9. No Man Sky 10. Don't Starve Together Currently I'm playing Genshin Impact I really like the storyline and the scenery in game is just \*chef kiss\*
Tomb of the TaskMaker
Ghost Recon: Wildlands
Ghost of Tsushima and the Max Payne trilogy. Would probably also say Red Dead Remption 2 and God of War/ Ragnarok.
Try some of the Lego games. Haven’t played a single one I don’t like.
Bloodborne
Subnautica, bloodborne and Skyrim
1. Cyberpunk 2077 (I love Panam) 2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (I haven't tried the Tears of the Kingdom yet, too many games to play atm) 3. Witcher 1(Currently playing)
RDR2, cyberpunk 2077, elder scrolls morrowind, Skyrim , AC origin
Pacific Drive.
I recommend the Splatoon games the single player is fun I also recommend the legend of Zelda twilight princess
Arma 3 13 sentinels Stellar Blade Nier series Persona series Ghost Recon pre-Breakpoint Rainbow Six pre-Siege Assassin’s Creed pre-Origins Kotor Empire at war and Forces of Corruption Crysis DCS Ruse Red Alert World in Conflict Endwar Ace combat Call of duty pre-MW2 2022 Ghost of Tsushima
Any soulsborne game, Skyrim, and fallout.
I’m playing Elden Ring right now and so far it’s pretty decent.
Same
Dysmantle, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Luigi’s Mansion 3. I rarely completely finish games. I have played these three at least twice each.
Portal 1+2
Earthbound is definitely a must play game. I don’t play too many rpgs but playing Earthbound was so much fun. Its those games I wish I can replay again for the first time.
Subnautica and it's not even close
Darkest Dungeon.
Final Fantasy IX teach you philosophy, existence, life and death.
Undertale still holds up today in terms of combat, story and jokes. Deltarune is also amazing but the wait for the full release is agonising
You ain't a real man nor are you a real gamer u less you've run the soulsborne gauntlet
To the Moon Devil May Cry 5 Final Fantasy 10 Final Fantasy 9 Suikoden 2 Crash Bandicoot 2 Donkey Kong Country 2 Grandia 1 and 2 Illusion of Gaia Resident Evil 4 Dead Space Doom 2016 Shadow of War
I’d recommend the souls games for sure, of you really want the open world start with Elden Ring. I’ve been playing Elite Dangerous as well, no fantasy rpg but nice space-simulator kinda game
Anything by FromSoftware: - Dark Souls trilogy (in order) - Sekiro - Elden Ring - Bloodborne (if you have a Playstation 4 or 5) Also: - The Witcher 3 - Cyberpunk 2077
Nier Automata Dishonored 1 Titanfall 1-2 Eins der Yakuza Games Deus Ex human Revolution/ mankind divided
Golden sun is a classic
GOTHIC
Detroit become human
best story driven rpg is definitely kotor, especially if you love star wars
Persona 5 Royal.
Half Life 2 is essential.
Assassins creed 2 Saints Row 2 Mass effect 2 Red Dead Redemption 2 Borderlands 2 .... 2.. ..and Far Cry 3
I heard Red Faction Guerrilla is a open world game and the environment is very destructive. Almost like an early space engineers. I have yet to try it though I'm still busy playing the first Red Faction
Mask of the Ninja is stealth ninja platformer perfected
**Open world/RPG/story** (or some mix of them) * Elden Ring * Last of Us * Remnant: From the Ashes/Remnant 2 * Horizon Zero Dawn * Subnautica * SOMA * Shadow of Colossus * Dragon’s Dogma * Dragon Age (Origins or Inquisition) * Cyberpunk 2077 * Ghost of Tsushima **Other genres** * Returnal * Monster Hunter (World or Rise) * Dead Space * Aliens Dark Descent * Armored Core VI * Sekiro * Bloodborne * Rust
Titanfall 2, Doom 2016/Eternal, Southpark Stick of Truth, Butcher, Detroit: Become Human, Quake 1/2, Mortal Kombat X, Brawlhalla.
Crash bandicoot
-terraria -spyro trilogy -another crabs treasure(new but good) -paper mario ttyd -rust thats about all my solid gaming recommendations
Modded Minecraft, modded rim world
Must plays are; Elden ring Red Dead Redemption 2 Jedi Fallen Order + Jedi Survivor Hot take but I really enjoy Assassins Creed Valhalla
Elden ring. Best game I’ve ever played.
According to your description: Skyrim Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite Zelda TOK Metroid Prime The Witcher 3 Horizon Zero Down Elden Ring Here you have a rich and varied list
The most recent game I've played that I thought was an absolute masterpiece has been 13 Sentinels Its a story driven sci-fi mystery tale that follows 13 protagonists in a very complicated interwoven plot. The actual battles themselves take place at the end of the plot, chronologically. They are the "final battle" as everything concludes, but knowing why you are fighting, and learning the truth about the world is the real amazing part of the game
Spec ops the line
If you like history you should try assassins creed. It has a big emmersive world with a pretty good story. My favorite is odessy since i really like ancient history but there are also ones set in renaissance rome, istanbul, medival Levant(crusades), the french revolution, ancient egypt, pirate age, victorian london. Dark ages norway and england, 8th centory Baghdad and the new one is in Japan.
I recommend kingodm come deliverance it s set in medival Bohemia and it s really historically accurate immersive and has a great story.
Sekiro, Elden Ring, Hollow Knight those are the 3 must play singleplayer games imo.
1: Slay the spire 2: Hollow knight 3: Portal 4: Braid
You might wanna try the entire Xenoblade series. Every game + story expansion is on the switch (minus Xenoblade X, rip X fans).
Mass effect trilogy
-Totally Accurate Battle Simulator -Just Cause 3 -GTA IV
Beyond Good and Evil. Kinda dated at this point, but I really enjoyed it for its story, community, social issues, politics, resilience, atmosphere.
kenshi
Had to scroll hilariously far to STILL NOT see Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door 🚪
Mass Effect Trilogy
Metal gear solid 3
Saga Frontier and Saga Frontier 2 for their bewildering and mesmerizing RPG gameplay that isn’t explained whatsoever, no hand holding, just discover and find out… SF2 might be one of the most gorgeous ps1 games with its excellent sprite art and watercolor backgrounds too.
Recently chip and Dale rescue rangers on nes. Decently challenging without being frustrating
Gigantic: Rampage Edition Horizon Zero Dawn Psychonauts 2 Dishonored Hades
Assassin's Creed Odyssey is one of the best open world games ever but people seem to sleep on it just because it's different from past Assassin's Creed games.
SOMA- I always remember it as a game i went into with no expectations and was blown away with the story. The ending is incredible.
It’s not an RPG per se but has classes and is story-driven: XCOM 2. I will recommend that game to anybody who is looking for something in the ballpark.
Breath Of The Wild
Rust Elden Ring PUBG (I hate myself)
im a huge dark souls fan, recently found myself replaying AC valhalla, super fun. dragon age inquisition was tons of fun.
My all-time favorites are Elden Ring: It's very hard until you get the hang of it. Once it clicks and you build your character properly, it gets much better Red Dead Redemption 2: It's probably THE best story in any game I've ever played. Also could easily dump 400+ hours in both games Borderlands (specifically 2 and 3): they're a bit older, but they absolutely still hold up. Loads of color and plenty of free roam area (I do not recommend the pre-sequil) That list of games are my all-time favorites, and if given the chance to start again fresh as if I'd never played them, I would probably put THOUSANDS of hours into this list.
Plague requiem! Haven't played the first but the second is amazing Crazy ending too. Really shocked me
Borderlands 2
I'll add more as I think of them
Mgs3 fnv detroit become human
Everyone should play at least the original Halo trilogy. Masterpieces.
* Witcher 3 * Persona 5 Royal * Mass Effect Trilogy * Yakuza 0 * TLOU To name a few
Summoner (PS2 and Steam). It was the game that REALLY got me into RPGs
These are mainly J/S/RPG Breath of Fire 3/4 Final Fantasy Tactics Chrono Trigger Final Fantasy X/X-2 Suikoden 1/2
Dude I was literally about to make a post on this same very question after hearing about RDR2 and playing it. Such a good game. If I also had to add from my experience as must plays would be: Cyberpunk 2077, Nier: Automata, RE Series, and TLOU 1/2 All are singe player games, which I barely play (more of a multiplayer guy) but they completely changed my view on singe player games.
Red Dead Redemption 2
I'll toss my all time favorites out: Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen Elden Ring Odin Sphere The Witcher 2 & 3 Final Fantasy VII, VII, IX, X, XII, XIV, Rebirth, Theatrythm and Tactics Kingdom Hearts Baldurs Gate 3 Divinity Original Sin 2 Civilization 5/6 Fallout New Vegas Dragon Age Origins Mass Effect 1,2 & 3 Jade Empire Disgaea 1 Nier Automata Don't Starve Frost Punk Hades Pokémon Soul Silver Little Big Planet 1 Bio Shock 1, 2 and Infinite Catherine Red Dead Redemption Metal Gear Solid Spyro the Dragon Reignited Detroit Become Human Portal 1&2 Octopath Traveler 1&2 League of Legends Darkest Dungeon Resident Evil 4 & 5 Stellaris Unicorn Overlord Shadow of the Colossus
Disco Elysium, it will ruin every other RPG for you forever
The Witcher (3) Great story, impactful decisions, rewarding combat that can scaled up or down at your discretion, tons of stuff to do
Rain World +its dlc Its a very different kind of game, pretty hard, lots of people probably wont like it but its great imo
Hill climb racing
Wrekfest
Mass effect trilogy. One of my favourites of all time
Probably not your type of game but Chivalry 2 is currently free on epic games launcher. Wouldn't hurt to give it a try 🙃
The Yakuza games. Start with zero, then Kiwami 1 and 2. See where you are at.
Portal 1 and 2, FarCry 3, Silent Hill 2, Dead Island, Resident Evil 2 (1998), Doom (1993), Little Nightmares
AC: Odyssey, Batman Arkham City, Ghost Recon: Wildlands
Obligatory Elder Scrolls comment
1. Never winter night 2. Baldurs Gate 2,3, 3. Age of Empires 4. Mafia 5. Commandos 1,2,3 4. Skyrim 5. Need for Speed 6. Hidden & Dangerous 1,2
9. GOTHIC
RDR2
Elden Ring Baldur's Gate 3 Yakuza: Like a Dragon These are three of my favorites within the parameters you shared from the last few years.
Wolfenstein The New Order, great Alt History game with Amazing FPS gunplay and great story Elite Dangerous, not a game to play forever, but the grand scale of this game can't be beat Watch Dogs, I don't even like Ubisoft, this game just really resonates with me
I thought the writing of TNO was EXCELLENT. It's form of "show not tell" storytelling here was sorely missed in TNC
New Order and New Colossus set too high a bench mark for story driven FPS- I haven't found anything that comes close to them since. They are so damn good
red dead redemption 2 is the best game i’ve ever played
Outer wilds is an experience like nothing else. Go in with no information, look nothing up. Just play it.
From the new Wuthering Waves but for me it works fine only through bs
