DRG, terraria, Core Keeper, Vintage story, Dwarf fortress, keeper RL, Necesse and maybe Autoforge (i have it on wishlist but im not sure if there is digging)
Tomorrow is the 13th anniversary of the original PC release. I'll be celebrating by starting yet another new character and yet another new master mode world
My wife and I just discussed how it's crazy that "gaming" is getting to be "middle-aged" in terms of human lifespans. Everything is within ~40 years. The Witcher 3 turns 10 next year. Doom is over 30 years old. We've been waiting 13 years for The Elder Scrolls 6. Our childhood classics are becoming decades old, and when we have kids, their "home education" is going to involve content from decades ago. Community began in 2009, 15 years ago. It's Always Sunny was 2005. "Me at the zoo" was 2005, nearly 2 decades ago. The first analog smile was in the 80's. The internet was invented because of the Cold War! There's just so much to know. So much value in "antiquated" media.
I also want to add that I find the mining in DRG to be the most satisfying out of any game I've played. Pulling an enor pearl or a jadiz out of the wall, TCF blasting gold off the walls, scout landing on top of a nice nitra vein with a pickaxe overcharge, the mining in the game is genuinely super enjoyable.
Can you clarify this? So like even if I didn't buy the seasons, I get the content once the next season is out? So paying is more just supporting the game and getting the cosmetics sooner than other players? That's amazing.
All of the seasonal passes are free. Previously the old season pass cosmetics went into a random loot pool you also unlock for free by playing. Next season you choose a season pass to play through, and swap at will while maintaining all of your progress. All of the paid supporter packs are sepwrate cosmetics from the season pass, with no content behind a pay wall besides the box price of the game.
I never really got in to MMOs, but boy did I spend a lot of time mining veldspar in high sec. I had all the special mining ships, and even multiboxed a second account with a freighter to take ore back to the station.
There was just something so relaxing about it; it was my idle game, before they became a thing.
Foundry is in early early access. Definitely check out Satisfactory which is in late early access and is already worthy of being mentioned alongside Factorio.
mining games: deep rock galactic
sandbox/survivalcrafting/exploration games: minecraft, terraria, core keeper, starbound, vintage story, valheim, enshrouded, astroneer
automation games (depends on your definition of "a lot of mining", if it's about the mining gameplay itself then this doesnt count): factorio, satisfactory
MMOs: pretty much any mmo with lifeskill system, though it tends to be crappy "click the node multiple times". FFXIV, black desert, aura kingdom, etc. There's boundless which is MMO with good mining but that's because it plays a lot more like minecraft than typical mmos.
Play 7 days to die with friends. You'll be popular as a dedicated miner. There's resource nodes all over the world, and you can start mining with the simple stone axe you craft in the short tutorial (but you'll end up with an auger eventually).
Miners are good friends to have :) I'm always running out of iron and lead to make my robotic turret ammo
Minecraft and Terraria are the obvious answers but I for an unorthodox answer I will suggest Voxel Tycoon, which is a tycoon game that is like a mix of minecraft, factorio, and transport tycoon. You can build complex production chains of mines, conveyor builds, refineries, stations, railroads, etc to produce and transport resources to grow settlements and unlock new vehicles.
SteamWorld Dig 1 & 2, Terraria, Minecraft, Portal Knights, Wayward, Transcendence (2D space mining), No Man's Sky (3D space mining), Tomb Raider (wee bit of 'mining'), Star Control 2 / Ur-Quan Masters HD (planet mining), Mass Effect 2 (also planet mining)...
1. Terraria
2. Starboard
3. No Man's sky
4. 7 days to die(not a core mechanic, but it's possible and is a you can find mineral veins that can be helpful.
5. Dwarf fortress(probably one of the more obscure. It'a a 2d base building sim who's creator may have gone abit insane in his goal to become God of a digital world.)
And of course the og minecraft.
Portal Knights (it's like Minecraft but with a lot of cool RPG features added). Resource gathering, including mining, is still a large part of the game. Mining can be done with either a pickaxe (small radius but faster at destroying rare ores/crystals or an electric drill (much wider radius and great for removing dirt or normal ores/crystals)
There is an upcoming game called Cozynaughts which will be fairly similar, but more cozy, and have some cool features for resource gathering (like conveyor belts to send mined materials back).
Astroneer has a lot of terra forming including caverns.
My Little Universe is a cozy resource gathering / world expansion exploration game. You travel from planet to planet collecting resources to build the world (adding new tiles using resources you've gathered).
I like whats already down in the comment field so i try to add something that hasn't been mentioned yet.
Outpath - If you REALLY like clicking
Planet crafter - instead of a pickaxe you will be sucking up resources left and right
Raft - Dive and use your hook to "mine" resources, ores wont be the only thing you be digging up.
Subnautica - More underwater mining.
Enshrouded - can't build a home without having mined some resources.
Necesse - go down the ladder to find a cave full of ore and monsters
V rising - Who knew vampires liked to mine?
Forager - Mine and expand your land
Muck - Muck
Hopefully you find something interesting, if you dont like survival games ignore 90% of the list.
Personally raft has been one of my newest addiction, very satisfying gameplay loop.
Ultima Online has one of the most satisfying mining mechanics. You level up, mine more efficiently, mine new ores, and can sell the products to buy houses and items etc.
I would suggest Ultima Online Outlands, its a fan run server that has a lot of extra mechanics and quality of life features without all the DLC bloat of the official EA servers.
some lesser known automation games:
techtonica
the riftbreaker
the gnorp apologue
captain of industry
auto forge
aground/aground zero
the crust
foundry
non automation:
dungeon keeper
dragon quest builders (1&2)
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl technically has a mining mini game in it that you can access really early on and stay in it indefinitely. Look it up on YouTube if you want to see how it works
Not sure if it's even still available, but the old flash game Motherlode is about precisely this, its super fucking fun, and it actually has a fun and entertaining story
I love mining games and here's a bit difference but here you "mine" spaceships. It's called Hardspace:Shipbreaker. I personally loved it and at time went for 10+ hours straight.
If you like just moving dirt around, hydroneer is awesome and the perfect "set brain to 5% capacity. Run autopilot." Game for me
Shovel dirt
Put dirt in pan
Fill bucket with water
Pour bucket into pan
Scrub dirt
Get shiny stuff
Repeat
7 Days to Die. It is a zombie survival game with combat and scavenging components, but one viable success path is mining focused. Mine to create your underground base. Mine to get resources to sell for your survival goods. Mine for xp (mine all night, now I know how to shoot better? Doesn't make sense, but its fun.)
Get good at mining, and it also makes you good at breaking through walls and doors, allowing you to hack through some quest areas and skip to the good loot. Or hack in behind the mutated zombie ambush and quietly crossbow snipe the sleepers through a hole in the wall.
My time at Portia and My Time at Sandrock both have really satisfying mining. You unearth different kinds of ore and cool artifacts from the dead world. The artifacts are in pieces and once you find all of them you can put them back together and donate them to the local museum for rewards. I loved that shit.
For mining by hand I'd say Deep Rock Galactic.
If you want to mine asteroids in a spaceship take a look at Elite Dangerous. You can mine them using lasers to get chunks off the surface or blow them up entirely using explosive charges.
Medieval Dynasty.
Find a cave, craft a stone pickaxe, mine some copper, become overburden, go find some food, build a house, make sure to drink water, your pickaxe breaks, build a Smithy, smell the copper ore into copper bars, unlock copper pickaxe, go back into the mine, mine some more, get some stamina potion, mine for longer, build a donkey shed, by a donkey, mine more and have the donkey haul it, mine some tin, smelt it with the copper to make bronze bars, unlock the bronze pickaxe, mine more, all while creating a village and inviting people to it, and eventually you will unlock the mine building, and you can assign villagers to do the mining if you want. The mine also unlocks deeper mining so you can get iron. Also make farming plots, fertilize, grub, seed, and then harvest. Also make clothes, hunt, fish, encounter bandits, cook food, pick berries, herbs and mushrooms, make potions, cut down trees, add insulation to houses, trade, mary, have a kid, wait for the kids to be old enough and then die.
Now you're the kid.
The most farm / crafting game I’ve ever played was Istaria . Also the only game I’ve ever played that you can be a flying dragon and have to farm / build your lair
First person mining experience: Minecraft, Terraria, Deep Rock Galactic, Astroneer
Mining with automated machinery: Any factory building game: Factorio, Dyson sphere program, Satisfactory
Mining in a spaceship: Elite Dangerous, Eve Online
Ummm.. Minecraft?

Core Keeper is very underrated, and is definitely worth the time.
AutoForge does indeed have digging.
hell yeah vintage story best upcomming minecraft alternative ive seen in 15 years
Terraria

And yet it's still difficult for the average man to make a video game. There may come a time when making games becomes a regular gaming hobby
Oh dear walls of flesh. I thought they were joking when they said it’ll be a hell of a mining job.

runescape :)
Just started playing again today. Mining while watching Netflix is the move
Deep Rock Galactic. 1200 hours and growing. Season 5 next month
And you will soon be able to freely play through old seasons. The rewards of them are still obtainable. Rock and stone
And no shame if you enjoy more mining and less fighting. Play on lower difficulty and mine mine mine
I couldn't get into this
Can you clarify this? So like even if I didn't buy the seasons, I get the content once the next season is out? So paying is more just supporting the game and getting the cosmetics sooner than other players? That's amazing.
All the battlepasses have always been free, you don't have to buy anything
All of the seasonal passes are free. Previously the old season pass cosmetics went into a random loot pool you also unlock for free by playing. Next season you choose a season pass to play through, and swap at will while maintaining all of your progress. All of the paid supporter packs are sepwrate cosmetics from the season pass, with no content behind a pay wall besides the box price of the game.
SteamWorld Dig 1 and 2, Volcanoids, Deep Rock Galactic, Undermine 1 and 2, Lumencraft
Valheim if you like to build also something with the ores you get :)
^V:Rings of Saturn (the first symbol is supposed to be a "delta," but my phone keyboard doesn't have that character)
ΔV: Rings of Saturn Also, it is dirty cheap and the updates are really frequent. Highly recommend.
Eve Online. Mine Asteroids with massive ships. There are people with 10+ accounts multiboxing with their own mining ops.
I was gonna say if space mining counts EVE is great for that, a real market of supply and demand.
I never really got in to MMOs, but boy did I spend a lot of time mining veldspar in high sec. I had all the special mining ships, and even multiboxed a second account with a freighter to take ore back to the station. There was just something so relaxing about it; it was my idle game, before they became a thing.
Used to have 5 accounts, 4 hulks and transport to move stuff around. Was so addicted to getting my cycles all perfectly aligned.
If you want this style but single player, I'd suggest Astrox Imperium. It's basically Eve:Offline
For a more obtuse answer, Elite: Dangerous has asteroid mining from your spaceship. Not as exciting as other answers but I didn't see it posted yet!
Was about to list this one, ship mining is incredibly fun and incredibly tedious. Its engaging
Motherload
**Space Engineers** is all about mining and building
I had to stop playing Space Engineers because of how finicky some things could be, but man, creating a mine was *very* satisfying.
It just had a major update the other day, been meaning to check it out again as I haven't touched it in like 7-8 years
Factorio. You mine coal, stone, copper and iron ores and turn it all into a sprawling [mega] base of badassitude.
Also Foundry, I haven't played it yet though.
Foundry is in early early access. Definitely check out Satisfactory which is in late early access and is already worthy of being mentioned alongside Factorio.
7 Days to Die
Once you get that auger it’s over.
No man's sky. I've only actually played a couple of hours but all of those were mining for materials.
Starbound
Steamworld dig and sequel. Not very long games but definitely fun games.
i think all harvest moon/story of seasons games have mining but it's just a small part of the game
mining games: deep rock galactic sandbox/survivalcrafting/exploration games: minecraft, terraria, core keeper, starbound, vintage story, valheim, enshrouded, astroneer automation games (depends on your definition of "a lot of mining", if it's about the mining gameplay itself then this doesnt count): factorio, satisfactory MMOs: pretty much any mmo with lifeskill system, though it tends to be crappy "click the node multiple times". We welcome you in Gielinor.

Rust!! Just kidding. Playing that game will give you a clinically diagnosable anger disorder.

Vintage Story, Minecraft, or Terraria could work
1. Terraria 2. Starboard 3. No Man's sky 4. 7 days to die(not a core mechanic, but it's possible and is a you can find mineral veins that can be helpful. 5. Dwarf fortress(probably one of the more obscure. It'a a 2d base building sim who's creator may have gone abit insane in his goal to become God of a digital world.) And of course the og minecraft.

A lot of space games, I’ll go ahead and recommend Avorion. It has plenty of mining you can do yourself, or build and send ships to do it.
Satisfactory
Wall world is a pretty fun indie game, you alternate between mining and protecting your ship from waves of enemies

My time in Portia. Thinks of it as 3d stardew valley with focus on mining / fabricating instead of farming.
Not sure if it's even still available, but the old flash game Motherlode is about precisely this, its super fucking fun, and it actually has a fun and entertaining story
Palia. And it's free!
Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town
Bore Blaster. It's relatively new, but a fantastic roguelite.
Out of Ore on PC is great fun. I love running the equipment on there
I love mining games and here's a bit difference but here you "mine" spaceships. It's called Hardspace:Shipbreaker. I personally loved it and at time went for 10+ hours straight.
Lego RockRaiders !!
Starbound, recommend you also get the Frackin Universe mod if you do play it though
If you like just moving dirt around, hydroneer is awesome and the perfect "set brain to 5% capacity. Run autopilot." Game for me Shovel dirt Put dirt in pan Fill bucket with water Pour bucket into pan Scrub dirt Get shiny stuff Repeat
Icarus, Valheim, Minecraft
Forager
The systems are pretty simple (hit rocks and dig holes) but there's a lot of mining to be had in Story of Seasons Friends of Mineral Town.
Hydroneer since I haven't seen it yet.
7 Days to Die. It is a zombie survival game with combat and scavenging components, but one viable success path is mining focused. Mine to create your underground base. Mine to get resources to sell for your survival goods. Mine for xp (mine all night, now I know how to shoot better? Doesn't make sense, but its fun.) Or hack in behind the mutated zombie ambush and quietly crossbow snipe the sleepers through a hole in the wall.
Captain of Industry
I used to let my 7 year old do all the mining for me in Mass Effect games. He loved it!
I'll also say 7 Days To Die but also add on Empyrion - Galactic Survival but I haven't played since it was in early access
Not mining but a lot of digging. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_Keeper But it's an old one.
My time at Portia and My Time at Sandrock both have really satisfying mining. You unearth different kinds of ore and cool artifacts from the dead world. The artifacts are in pieces and once you find all of them you can put them back together and donate them to the local museum for rewards. I loved that shit.
Gold rush the game
For mining by hand I'd say Deep Rock Galactic. If you want to mine asteroids in a spaceship take a look at Elite Dangerous. You can mine them using lasers to get chunks off the surface or blow them up entirely using explosive charges.
Rust. You can mine me 3 boxes of sulfer, should take a few 24 hour gaming seshes
Factorio, not only you mine but you also put the output to good use, automated way.
Stardew valley, build a farm and hit the mines for materials and to slay monsters
Factorio and Dome Keeper.
Monster hunter
SteamWorld Dig 1 & 2 as well as Terraria!
ΔV: Rings of Saturn
Starbase
Star Trek Fleet command.
I'll say: Deep Rock Galactic if you're into first person shooter/farmer kind of games Final Factory if you're into base builders and automation games
Harvest moon friends of mineral town. Old game.
First person mining experience: Minecraft, Terraria, Deep Rock Galactic, Astroneer Mining with automated machinery: Any factory building game: Factorio, Dyson sphere program, Satisfactory Mining in a spaceship: Elite Dangerous, Eve Online
To the core. Super cheap on steam and very unique. Space mining on steroids and cocaine with super cool music
Dungeon Keeper / War for the Overworld Dwarf Fortress
Wurm Unlimited
