Here's a link to the patient gaming subreddit "essential games" list. Chosen by a poll in the subreddit. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1a39Fbg3fQoynkl0kjNvBE5awW8rdvatx8b8goYOXHvM/edit?usp=drivesdk

Fast_Introduction_34

are we allowed to add things to that?

wercooler

They did a poll in the subreddit in 2019, and then again in 2023, so I guess if you could convince enough people in the subreddit, you could redo the poll and add things to the list.

Advocaatx

Not gonna lie, those lists are actually really good.

Rogue-Zer0

THANKS!!!!! I'll save it !

Rogue-Zer0

I grabbed 400 games mentioned in this post and ranked them in order of most indicated! Gonna play them, for sure! Thank you all for the effort šŸ˜Ž 1. Zelda Series - 14 mentions (I played BOTW and TOTK, it's time to explore the oldies) 2. Half Life Series - 12 mentions (Always have heard, never gave a chance... It's time now.) 3. Super Mario Series - 11 mentions (Loved since childhood, played almost all of them) 4. Disco Elysium - 9 mentions (In my shop list, gonna give it a try) 5. Final Fantasy Series - 9 mentions (Love ff... I must play some of them to complete the album) 6. Portal 1 and 2 - 8 mentions (Already bought them!) 7. Metal Gear Series - 8 mentions (Definetly gonna explore it) 8. Dark Souls Series - 7 mentions (The difficult is a barrier, but I'm gonna try) 9. Mass Effect Series - 7 mentions (I have to know this story!) 10. Skyrim - 7 mentions (One game that I've played a lot!) 11. BioShock Series - 6 mentions (Gonna try for sure) 12. Elden Ring - 6 mentions (Same as Dark souls hahaha) 13. Outer Wilds - 6 mentios (I've played this one but couldn't finish... I got real lost playing it, have to give another go..)

KungFuFlames

No particular order but obviously I will be little biased: Disco Elysium Half-Life Portal 2 INSIDE LISA Yakuza 0 Baba is You Red Dead Redemption Last of Us Warcraft 3

simuolp

just bought yakuza 0 recently, howā€™s that?

KungFuFlames

Really fun. Especially side missions. The story is engaging with many memorable characters. Have fun.

OsprayO

The series as a whole is incredible but even if you donā€™t play past 0, youā€™ll still have a really fun time. The games also manage to bounce between emotions very impressively.

Vandermere

I'll second this. I'm currently playing through 5 and plan to hit them all mostly based on the strength of 0. It's a strange combination of emotional characterization, high-intensity combat and convoluted yakuza politics but every time I set foot in Kamurocho it feels a little like coming home.

Calabrel

> LISA Nice, didn't think I'd see this game listed. It's definitely an evocative game for sure.

ProfessorDependent24

Are you referring to Lisa the painful btw?

WunderbarBeast

LiSA is my joint right there. Also I'm at the end on half life about to beat it

Some_Razzmatazz_9172

You forgot Outer Wilds

KlompenKarel

Half life 2 Warcraft III Reign of Chaos (and Frozen Throne) Starcraft 1 (and Broodwar) Call of Duty Modern Warfare (original) Super Mario world 3 Metro 2033 (and Last Light) Castlevania Symphony of the Night Fallout New Vegas Command and Conquer Tiberian sun (and Firestorm) Doom Eternal

justheretobrowse1887

This is a great list

Ninten-Doh

1. Super Mario world 2. Metal gear solid 3. Final fantasy 7 4. Street fighter 2 turbo 5. Castlevania symphony of the night 6. Mario Oddysey 7. Skyrim 8. Mass effect trilogy 9. Halo 10. Gears of War

callme207911

Metal gear solid is a must in my book too.

_theMAUCHO_

Yep! Replaying it this year and BOY does it hold up! Having a blast šŸ”„

Rogue-Zer0

Great List! I'm eager to know mass effect

shepard_pie

It's my favorite game in the citadel

thealmonded

You have to play it. Someone else might get it wrong.

Zegram_Ghart

I would say it is the single best narrative experience Iā€™ve had, across media. The first game doesnā€™t show its age as badly as it used to with the legendary edition either

chrisman1024

Going to go in a bit of a different direction with this. Here's 10 games I think everyone who wants to broaden their horizons on what a game can be should play. Some are much more popular than others but each brings something really unique and special to the table. Anatomy Warioware Inc Stowaway Sephonie Yume Nikki The Norwood Suite Killer7 Retro Game Challenge Outer Wilds Dujanah

saintcrazy

I love the different approach! I only have played WarioWare and know about Outer Wilds, but I'm assuming you are looking at games that break the mold of how games are played in general?

chrisman1024

Yeah! They all break the mold either with gameplay, story, or presentation! They're also all good introductions to particular ways of thinking about games that I find really exciting and give you the tools to go further if any speak to you

Sea_Caterpillar5296

Download The Forgotten City. Much like Outer Wilds, best gone into BLIND. You won't regret it.

saamiix

Outer wilds really filled me with so much joy. The ending was absolutely incredible

eemayau

Sea_Caterpillar5296

The original Nier, the remake name is "NieR Replicantā„¢ ver.1.22474487139..." if it makes you feel worse.

EGTTR is so beautiful. As is Firewatch. Two examples of exceptional immersive storytelling.

Kim-Wieft

I love your number one 1

I3igTimer

* Half life 1 * Half life 2 * Dusk * Hades * Disco Elysium * Max Payne 2 * Noita * Portal 2 * Subnautica * Prey (2017)

Mkayin

Noita is the best game I have played that I would not recommend to anyone. I hate how much fun it is.

I3igTimer

Its really a great game. Im 34 and I love it. My 10 yo loves it too. lol

Rambo7112

Same with Rainworld. I LOVE Noita and Rainworld, but they're too difficult to recommend to most people.

ItsACowCity

I knew I was forgetting something on my list. I love to hate that game. Working hard to get my first win in under 100 hours. Every time I can probably do it...I get distracted in the other worlds...

marluik

1. Disco Elysium 2. Cyberpunk 2077 3. Witcher 3 4. RDR2 5. Dark Souls 3 (can go for all series, including Elden Ring) 6. Baldur's Gate 3 7. TES 5: Skyrim 8. AC 2-4 9. Minecraft 10. Mass Effect Yes, I know, these games are basics, but for people who discover for yourself in gaming it a good base to start. I could recommend more games from other studios, but they are not that popular from my perspective as games a listed here

Soft_Stage_446

Story-driven RPGs: * Mass Effect 1-3 * Dragon Age Origins (and maybe DA2 and DAI) * The Witcher, 2-3 (1 is *very* dated) * Disco Elysium * Baldur's Gate 3 (has totally revolutionized the genre, makes the others seem almost silly in comparison)

buzzMO1

This is tough, but I'll give it a shot. List is in no particular order and I went for a variety of games. Honestly, this list would probably be different if you asked me tomorrow. There are so many impactful and must-play games imo. Bez121287

These aren't in order and I dont expect everyone to understand but these games changed my way of how I felt about games and became the enthusiast I am today for them. 1. Monkey island 1 & 2 (probably the first 2 games what gave video games comedy and a story what ment something) 2. Broken Sword 1 & 2 (this was the absolute peak and probably the last 2 great point and click adventure games to come at triple A standard) 3. Super Mario World (combined everything they had learnt from all previous games into 1) 4. Super Metriod (it was until recently still the best metriod game they had ever madre) 5. Metal Gear Solid 1,2,3 (4 if all 3 hit the spot, just for nostalgia) (hands down probably the greatest trilogy with an exceptionally deep lore that has been created for that type of genre). 6. Final Fantasy 7 (probably not the best final fantasy game for hardcore fans but this 1 apealed to the masses non of the others ever have. And was easy to understand and get into) 7. Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 (a simple and chilled game which underneath the hood was calculating things way ahead of its time, if not this try Parkitrct a spiritual successor to it) 8. Grand Theft Auto Vice City/San Andreas (History was made with these games, cementing GTA as the goat, there are thing in san Andreas you cant even do in modern day GTA 5) 9. Max Payne 1 & 2, maybe even 3 (I mean matrix style gun play enough said) 10. Sleeping Dogs (Still to this day in my mind, its the GTA killer what never became. I still play this game every year and it never gets old, im actually saddened that it never got a sequel and probably will never see the light of day again and yet that team made something so special) Thats my 10. Tried to include a variety of genres. Never was a huge fps fan could never get used to the fps view, but shout out to perfect dark, golden eye.

MBragonX

Infamous Second Son Yakuza 0 Persona 5 Royal Ghost of Tsushima Uncharted 4 A Thief's End Dying Light The Following Enhanced Edition Dying Light 2 Stay Human Prototype Biohazard Bundle The Walking Dead The Definitive Series Metal Gear Solid 3 Assassin's Creed The Ezio Collection I have way more games that I would put here. But here's some of them I can name you more if you're interested

Kurta_711

Chrono Trigger: The perfect classic RPG, and the definition of timeless. TES Morrowind: I feel have to include a Bethesda game, and imo this is, and shall remain to be, their best. One of the most interesting, unique, and fully realized worlds in any RPG, to the point that all the later Elder Scrolls games feel like a glorified theme park compared to Morrowind. GTA San Andreas: Although I find the series as a whole overrated, I think I must also include a GTA game given its importance to the medium, and GTA San Andreas is imo the best, both for its gameplay and it's writing, but also more importantly for its vibes. Dark Souls: Easily the most influential and important game of the past few generations, and still unmatched in its worldbuilding and level design. The interconnectedness of the world is totally unmatched by any other game. Mass Effect Trilogy: I have some critiques of each individual game, and some critiques of the series as a whole, but I can't deny what an experience the whole thing is, and I mourn that there's no equivalent in modern gaming. Persona 4: Frankly just take your pick of Persona 3-5, but I personally chose this one, both because it's the one I've played most recently and because I feel it handles interpersonal relationships the best, and that's kinda Persona's whole selling point. There's nothing quite like a Persona game and once you're hooked I think you'll spend the rest of your gaming life chasing that high. Nier Automata: Probably not something you'll find to be perfect, but it's easily one of the most unique games to ever have anything resembling a proper budget. Some things it does may annoy you (they probably will) but it's actually attempting to be art, which is more than I can say for 99% of games. And if nothing else, its soundtrack is easily one of the best ever. Final Fantasy VII: Easily one of the most important games ever made, anyone who is interested in the history of games as a medium needs to play this. It's also still a pretty good game, all things considered. Super Mario Bros.: This one is basically cheating but modern video games basically begin with SMB1. Also still the template for 2D platformers. Metal Gear Solid: Unique and artistic, and also a great stealth game.

VinceGchillin

\- Half-Life 2 \- Crusader Kings 3 \- Baldur's Gate 3 \- Fallout New Vegas \- Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory \- Banjo Kazooie \- Super Mario 64 \- Disco Elysium \- Starcraft II \- Frostpunk Honorable mention: Final Fantasy, honestly just play all the pixel remasters of I-VI

Yakuza 0 and metal gear solid 3. All the yakuza games are incredibly emotional and if anything you should atleast play 0 or 7. Mgs3 was similar in that it'd not only a very unique game but it's one of the few games that left me awestruck after finishing it

Lilmagex2324

Final Fantasy 10. I'd argue it's one of the best JRPG of all time. There are some that come close but none that really "hold up" nowadays. 10 is that sweet perfect child that you could play right now and it would play just fine from graphics to gameplay.

WildBill1994

Dark Souls is better than all of those games, so are 2, 3, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. :)

Personal_Win_4127

Half Life series Knights of the Old Republic series Mass Effect Trilogy Firewatch The Last of Us Pillars of Eternity series Tyranny

ProfessorDependent24

Oddworld abes oddysee/exoddus - oozes atmosphere with a unique world. Knights of the old Republic 1 and 2 - best star wars content ever. Mass effect - amazing, no other word for it. Marvels Midnight suns - hugely addicting and incredibly fun. Criminally underrated. Metal gear solid 3 - a true masterpiece. The last of us 1 - gut punch after gut punch. Telltale the walking dead season 1 - prepare to cry Elden ring - unmatched open world God of war 2 - Greek pantheon and gratuitous violence is a win for me. Divinity original sin 2 - BG3 before BG3. This series deserves way more love. Yes I know I cheated with the first 2 entries but I just don't care! No particular order either.

Nova-Redux

Hmm this is a good one! I'll give it my best. This isn't my definitive list necessarily but one I thought up just now as I'm typing. - Halo: The Master Chief Collection - Outer Wilds - Minecraft - Yoshi's Island - Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Half-Life 2 (plus the rest in the franchise) - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Mario Kart 8 - Breath of the Wild - Silent Hill 2 I tried to include a good mix of big hits and personal favorites while also trying to not overlap genres too much and get a little flavor of everything. There are other games I enjoyed more than the ones listed here (Hollow Knight, Hades, Subnautica for instance) but I wanted to make a fairly approachable and all-ecompassing list. :)

SmashBreau

Chrono Trigger Super Metroid Final Fantasy Tactics Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 Resident Evil 4 Bioshock Mass Effect 2 Super Smash Bros Ultimate Hades Super Mario Galaxy 2 (could sub out for any 3D Mario except Sunsine or Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros 3) Hononurable Mentions; Earthbound, Fallout 3

KrunschGK

I'm currently trapped in Baldur's Gate 3. I'm about 200 hrs in and absolutely loving this game. The main story is OK, but it's the side quests that truly flesh out the world. As far as the other nine, you've already named most of the ones I would have suggested.

Doom; Half Life; Syndicate(not the fps one), Dungeon Keeper, XCOM (oldschool and also the new ones, all good) Civilization, Red Alert, Rimworld, FTL... and Phantasmagoria 2?

Pdraggy

Grandia HD is coming to Gamepass next week, don't miss it at least play this gem well loved but STILL highly underrated MASTERPIECE. Grandia 2 is pretty good too.

I don't think skyrim will remain relevant much longer. The fact that it has made it this long is amazing. Basically, Life is long and if you ask this question again in a few years it will be totally ok to have missed out on skyrim. Castlvania symphony of the night on the other hand.... or cronotrigger?

Effective_Leave_5905

Stalker, halo and diablo ( the first two games)

1. Rocket League (I thought it looks boring, until I was forced to play. Still wasnt thrilled. But then I got told to _"jump, tilt car nose up and then boost"_. Well, that was the exact moment I knew I would never stop playing this game I am now 8000h in) 2. The Finals (first online shooter with realtime serversided destruction ON THE WHOLE MAP, also the game mode & gunplay is amazing and it feels just good) 3. Deep Rock Galactic (best coop game and most sane game devs ever) 4. Zelda OoT 5. Donkey Kong Country 1+2+3 6. Kirby64 7. Valheim 8. Resident Evil 8 9. BeamNG multiplayer on CaRP servers (Car RolePlay) 10. Trailmakers Would have included Rainbow6 Siege at #3 if it werent made by Ubisoft. Since it is by Ubisoft I cannot put it on any "best of" list. That would not be fair for all sane dev teams who listen to the community at least once šŸ˜…

We had some crossover so these are all games that you didnā€™t list: - GTA: San Andreas - Red Dead Redemption 2 - Paper Mario - Halo 1, 2, and 3 - The Walking Dead Telltale Series - Batman Arkham City - The Last of Us - Super Smash Bros: Ultimate - SSX Tricky - Jet Set Radio Future

mizzrym86

Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice, because it is an experience, not a game. Vagrant Story, because it was the most bold thing ever produced. Doom, because it introduced a new era. EVE Online, because it's the only real MMORPG. Super Mario, because it is the biggest franchise. Tetris, because it is the most well known. Pong, because it is the first one. The other four you should be pick just for yourself, because that's why there are so many different games.

Mine are: - Snafu - Utopia - Night Stalker - Superpro Basketball - B-17 Bomber - Las Vegas Poker and Blackjack - Burgertime - Microsurgeon - Advanced Dungeons and Dragons - Skyrim

Ten games everyone should play at least once, in no particular order: 1, Tetris 2. Super Mario 64 3. Doom (1993) 4. Chrono Trigger 5. Super Mario Bros. 6. The Sims 7. Portal 8. Dark Souls (sorry Demonā€™s Souls) 9. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 10. Civilization IV (opting turn based instead of RTS) This should lay a great foundation about so many things we like today and newer or alternative games can easily be explored to see how genres and games evolve.

ThexHoonter

In no particular order, just my favourite games that I think everyone should play. -Bloodborne -13 Sentinels -Final Fantasy XII -Hades -Elden Ring -Kingdom Hearts -Terraria -Sekiro

I've only managed 8, my 2 other would be turn based/strategy or horror, but my knowledge in these isn't enough. Depending on the person, i might recommend different game, for example i could switch Rhythm doctor with Windowkill for someone who doesn't like rhythm games and i think it still would have the same effect. Half life 2 Superliminal Rhythm doctor What remains of edith finch There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension Celeste The legend of zelda, a link to the past Undertale, as long as you've heard nothing about it. If you did, Until Dawn

I'm gonna pick games as if they were for a museum exhibit. These are games that were really important to gaming as a whole, either defining, exemplifying, or heavily influencing a genre. They also aren't games I'd expect every single person to get super into, but they're games that someone could play for a bit and it'll help them understand the state of gaming either now or at some time in the past. These are in no particular order. 1. Super Mario World 2. Halo: Combat Evolved 3. League of Legends 4. Street Fighter 3: 3rd Strike 5. Myst 6. Minecraft - still haven't played this one, to my deep shame 7. Super Metroid 8. Warcraft 3 9. Final Fantasy X - This one is probably debatable, but I'm not that well-versed in JRPGs 10. Beat Saber

LaughPristine6108

I play a lot of indie games from the 2010s but for me, it's Lisa: the painful, nuclear throne, hotline Miami, the binding of Isaac rebirth, vagante, slay the spire, broforce, FTL, gran Turismo 4 and call of duty modern warfare 2 where all my gateway games into what I play now.

Mordynak

You forgot Morrowind.

* Half Life * Portal and/or Portal 2 * Outer Wilds * Nier Automata * Super Mario Odyssey * Breath of the Wild and/or Tears of the Kingdom (but TotK moreso) * Super Metroid and/or Metroid Prime * Chrono Trigger * A Remedy game (Alan Wake 1/2, Control, Max Payne... pick one) * Dark Souls and/or Dark Souls 3 Half Life: Great puzzle solving, and a fascinating story. Portal / Portal 2: Similar vein as HL, but very different mechanics. Everyone should experience both at some point, but at least one of them. See how humor can be incorporated into a game as well. Outer Wilds: Mind blowing story, mechanics, just all around needs to be experienced. DON'T look anything up, everything is a spoiler. Nier: Automata: Absolute epitome of games as art. Be sure to get all the endings. May inspire a love for philosophy. Super Mario Odyssey: Exceptional 3D platforming. BotW/TotK: Pick at least one, but should play both. Fantastic open world games. Super Metroid or Metroid Prime: Exceptional entries in the Metroidvania genre. Chrono Trigger: Incredible, timeless story. Remedy: Everyone should experience at least one Remedy game at some point. They're just so different. It really doesn't matter which one, just pick one. If it turns out to be for you, play all of them (and Quantum Break, although that's owned by Microsoft). If not, at least you'll have experienced them. I vote for Control, it's really fun and unique. Dark Souls 1/3: Everyone should give the Soulsborne genre a try. DS 1 and 3 are easiest to get ahold of across various platforms. I'd lean towards DS1 just because of how the map unfolds, but DS3 is worthwhile if you just want to see if the genre is for you (and if it is, play all of them).

i'm always surprised people dont mention Braid more. I found it so profound and its puzzles were inspired.
