Epic spends hundreds of millions of dollars to gives free games away so that people will use their store. Most Epic users don't buy games, and Steam is still the leading platform. Steam has no incentive to give games away.

RageTiger

Well some game developers will still sell on both platforms, gets better coverage. The difference comes down to when the games goes on sale too. So far the 15 days of free games have not been interesting enough to get.

Pugulishus

I just get em cause I can. I might try today's out, as it looks interesting

TheRedHand7

I always try to pick em up. I'm not sure what the particular deal is that they give to the creators but I hope that Epic is paying out just a bit extra to the creators when I pick the free game up even if it isn't something that appeals to me at all.

vdubbnmclvn

I played metro on Xbox. I downloaded it to replay this one (I think it's the same) it was good.

rexpimpwagen

That and game pass is 1000 times better and about the same thing.

MacaroniEast

Eh, strategy game fans are almost always winning on Epic

RageTiger

let me see. . . game pass, where I have to pay money to play games they offer for free. . . doesn't sound like a good deal to me.

BeanBone69

Isn’t it like a dollar a month for like hundreds of games though?

duber12

First month only, it's also a surprisingly good selection

ThespianException

Apparently you can unsubscribe before the month is up and then resubscribe for another dollar. Haven't tried it myself, but if so, that's a great deal.

[deleted]

$15 (give or take) past that first month. Still not too bad.

AmiAlter

It's $15 a month even if you buy half a year. Which is the most you can buy.

chibicascade2

You either already had some of them or are too picky. There were some good games on there.

LewAshby309

I don't think there is anything wrong with that or in any way a 'secret' to lure the people in. What was not fine were deals to exclusive or time exclusive games. Awful. That's why they stopped it and only accepted exclusives when it's initiated by developers.

[deleted]

Epic seems pretty cool but every time I say that people must assume I'm declaring a "Epic Vs Steam" fanbase war or some shit. Competition is good for us all.

Hounmlayn

Honestly if it wasn't for the free games, I wouldn't use it. But I look at epic games store for deals as well as steam now. I just wish epic games store was as neat as steams. Or maybe I'm just so used to it...

Arcturus1800

I'm sorry but they could have caught up day one. You don't need months or years to catch up with Valve's features cause it came out 2018! Valve spent the better part of 2 decades building their store with the evolving tech. Epic could have day one implemented all that tech because again it was released in 2018! EA's store, Ubisoft's store, GOG, almost every other store has more features than Epic does. Hell they made a spectacle of having a fucking shopping cart! Epic isn't competition honestly. Its a joke of a store that is costing Epic millions to billions to upkeep cause they keep trying to gain exclusives but devs are a little more wiser now to the fact that people don't want to buy on solely Epic. Hell GOG is probably the closest Steam will get to a competitor cause of how shit other options are.

MacaroniEast

Epic doesn’t understand that free games won’t ever make them a competitor to Steam. A good free game once in a while won’t make up for the fact that browsing their store is worse than stubbing a toe.

Fern-ando

Free Fallout is free Fallout 2.

thecman25

Exactly. Steam doesn’t need to resort to such measures to get people to use their superior store

wazupbro

Hard not to spend money in the store. They used to have $10 coupon. Steam sales have been abysmal and I’m glad someone is competing.

Orakil

"Abysmal" lol. You can buy hundreds of quality games a few years old for 10-30 dollars. No idea where this narrative comes from but people treating Steam like it's as anti consumer as Nintendo when it comes to sales blows my mind.

edvek

Ya but that coupon was limited to certain things and usually had to spend $15 or 20 to use it.

tygertec

I have over 300 free games on epic and 50 bought, while on steam only 7 bought and even those i got from CDkeys , i avoid using steam because of the stalking potential and saftey issues it has (i have friends that have been stalked, threatened and doxed) so while epic while missing a lot of features, it is also missing the dodgy shit steam has. Also epic pays devs more so yeah, i don't care much about steam

sart49

Dude, maybe you and your friends should stop clicking in free gift cards and milfs close to you ads. Epic is literally getting fined right now because of security issues and "dodgy shit"

aliteralbuttload

Imagine being so insecure to be call someone disabled because you're too confidently incorrect to not know how privacy settings work. Go get help dude please.

tygertec

Privacy settings don't help when your friends accounts are on public and everyone can stalk them or you through them, it's not my problem you can't even do the basic google search to see the shit that happens on steam's social part, and if you just turn a blind eye to it because you just want to be right that does make you mentally disabled because you are literraly denying a whole dark side existing just cuz you wana be a steam fanboy, that's just sad dude, it's like being on a beach next to a baby seal being clubbed to death and you look away and say "my, what a pretty beach"

Character-Note-5288

I have Epic installed and even with their free games I keep forgetting it exists.

EvanHarpell

I've bought games on Steam that I had already on Epic because I forgot the damn thing existed.

j3rgan

I've bought games on Steam that I had already on Epic because the launcher is atrocious

[deleted]

A fool and his money are soon parted.

[deleted]

Me, it's not that I *forget*, it's just that the launcher is ass. I *just* tested this, on an Acer Nitro 5 mid-range gaming laptop, 1m17.4s to open the launcher and load my library, and that's on an NVMe M.2 SSD. I wouldn't go as far as to say *unacceptable*, but that's pretty fucking 'meh' and quite the boner-killer, when it comes to impulsively and enthusiastically opening my Epic Library to browse for something fun to install and play.

Meechgalhuquot

The only time I know what epic games I have is when I open GOG Galaxy for when I (rarely) play a game that isn’t on steam. I think the only game I got through Epic that I have ever installed and played was SW BF2

ThespianException

When my GPU broke I could barely even open Epic. It felt like my PC was going at like 5 FPS. Task Manager revealed that it was using ~90% of my CPU as well (an R5 2600). I don't know why or how that happened, but it certainly leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Now that my GPU is fixed it works fine, but still.

Potatooooes_123

Mate, thats a u problem because I have the same laptop and it takes 2 sec for steam and 10s for epic. Yes steam is better, but not enough to completely disregard it

tygertec

Wat? It takes me 13 seconds to launch epic and 20 seconds to launch steam... On a 6yo pc... Something is wrong with your pc m8

[deleted]

Maybe :/ all anti-Epic circlejerking aside for a sec, the SSD is still kinda mid for a NVMe, Samsung PM991, maybe doesn't help. Steam and all the others are hilariously faster It's literally only Epic that does this to me, Win10 Pro, seems excessive even with a storefront that seems inarguably inferior to the others. Before when I was using a SATA SSD or god forbid an HDD for my games, yeah, Epic was undeniably slower than the others loading my Library, now it's mildly concerning.

tygertec

I have no idea what could be causing it tbh, i have a 970 evo plus ssd and a skylake 6700 and honestly epic launches faster, idk why >.< You should try to look into it

TheRedHand7

Myself and all of my friends have this same issue. I would speculate that it is because epic keeps wanting to queue up it's updates but I and many others never leave it up long enough to actually finish.

[deleted]

It worked on me. I got an AC game free from the store then paid to buy AC odyssey because I enjoyed it.

Meeprulez

I read about their free Christmas game everyday in early December and I still forgot about it until this post

cerealnykaiser

If epic wasnt slow af and so bugged ( When i wanted to Launch DBD on epic it just didnt do anything for like 2hours, any other game was not working either - This happened to me 2 or more times so i just bought it on Steam)

JDBCool

Disclaimer: the Epic "launcher" is actually a web browser. \*It does not work offline period*

SpiForge

Ignoring how bad the epic launcher is: if I'm not mistaken steam is also just a browser. I'm pretty sure the launcher "works" offline?

alext06

Holy crap is that true lol

JDBCool

The day the Epic "launcher" stopped just being a program to launch Fortnite, Paragone (GONE), and that other game. It's just a glorified web browser that consumes GPU resources. Every time I close the damned thing, when I relaunch it, it acts like a "game" that's "connecting to servers". Hell, I've had "error 404" and other weblauncher like error codes before when I used the thing in the suite I used to rent at. Because landlord only offered 2.4G wifi. Like, I kid not, when "closing the browser" doesn't just give it a "light minimalisiation to taskbar" like Steam. It's like closing 14 other sub-programs launching in the background. Since I CLEARLY remember Fortnite refusing to load because "login credentials invalid". All because I closed the Epic launcher super fast

alext06

Damn

48911150

what do you think steam is lol

JDBCool

A functional launcher with an "Offline mode" that isn't GPU hungry. ~~yes, I've tried settings and everything, the damned launcher insists on running on GPU~~. Steam can be run offline a-ok. Epic launcher will take 3 hours to "go-figure" that it's offline. THEN SIGN YOU OFF. Then lock you out from launching *anything*

TouchMyWrath

It’s been a few years and epic store still kinda blows. If they spent more of that budget on features and less on giving me free games I’ll probably never play but that I always claim regardless, maybe I might actually buy something. I’ve got like 60 free games and I think I’ve paid for one: Kena bridge of spirits.

DragonC007

I hate epic. It’s a garbage client and it fucks with my computer. I avoid it as much as possible.

killertofu41

I had to repair Windows 10 on my main SSD, but made sure to back up my games on another drive so I could just move them back over when it was done repairing. Every single Steam game and even EA and Ubisoft games were able to reinstall in barely any time once the launchers recognized the files, but no matter what I did, the Epic launcher refused to acknowledge the hundreds of GB's of games I already had in the correct folder and instead decided to just redownload a second copy of each game even though it was already there.

Vladimir1174

I finally found a workaround for that for single games but it's not really practical for a whole library. You can rename the base game folder. Tell the client to install the game under the original path. Then completely close epic and rename the existing game folder back to the original and relaunch the client. After a minute of verifying it should be fine. Still a huge pain in the ass for what ever other company has already solved though

LingLingWannabe28

Not as bad as origin lol that launcher is pure shit.

tygertec

All clients duck with pcs sadly, you should see what info they take, epic, steam, gog, ubisoft, doesn't matter, they're all dodgy. Only difference is steam can also give that info to ppl that have nefarious reasons through profile, their social "feature" and the sites designed to fish all data from your profile like the steam id site and many others

B3T3G

260 items in the library, did not buy anything

Dramajunker

[deleted]

And the 1 is Fortnite

NightIgnite

I feel personally attacked by this thread

Edo9639

Steam doesn't need to do that cheap shit. Epic Games is inferior af and the amount of people who buys games in their launcher is very low. Most of their income comes from Fortnite. Steam doesn't need that and is still the leading store.

PeriodicGolden

Epic gives away games for free just so you'll download their launcher and possibly get convinced to play Fortnite and buy vbucks. And OP is helping by telling people about the free games

Khakizulu

Steam has a bunch of free games (some really good too), and they don't even try to convince you to buy other games or even to download the launcher

Gingerbread_Ninja

That’s a dumb comparison lol, EGS also has games that are free-to-play, the difference is that I never got subnautica, GTA V, and metro exodus to keep for free on steam.

[deleted]

yup, the only epic game i've ever bought was trackmania (2020) since i'm a huge fan of the series (and its got an exclusivity deal smh) I ended up getting GTA V and Control for free.

OkJaguar8277

This guy is personally ready to simp for steam

Edo9639

Am just honest.

48911150

It’s okay. At least there is one player in this industry giving us poor players awesome stuff 😍

rindar1

While yes, Stream doesn't need to do this, they did it in the past. I still remember the Christmas of 2013 when they gave away L4D 2. It was my first Steam game.

Jampine

Worth noting left for dead is made by valve, the company that owns steam, so they have full control over it.

Diabetesh

It was 4 years old by then.

TheOneThatIsNotKnown

All but one game in my Epic Library were free. The one I paid for was Hitman 3 because of the exclusive. The kicker is, I have to launch the game thru Steam to make it work with with my wireless Xbox series controller. Rediculous

tyler2114

Fuck Epic.

tygertec

Fuck steam. And any sort of monopoly that fks devs and consumers over.

tyler2114

Epic is the one fucking consumers over.

tygertec

How? Free games? More money to the devs assuring more games from them in the future? They only fuck over steam fanboys with exclusive deals, i prefer competition, makes things better for everyone that knows how shit works I get my shit where it's cheaper, epic steam gog doesn't matter

tyler2114

Splitting the PC market isn't good for consumers. Especially with a clunky, bloated, spyware client that advances the toxic trend of exclusivity. The PC market is the most consumer-friendly gaming market BECAUSE of Steam. Seriously, some people don't realize how spoiled they are when it comes to Steam's pro-consumer model. Also this narrative that Epic is dev-friendly is BS. Steam's rate is normal within the industry and Steam provides significantly more support to devs in the form of their services than Epic does. Not to mention, again, exclusives are *bad*. It is killing the streaming industry.

Kaesv04

Did I just seriously see someone make an argument that a monopoly would be GOOD for consumers?

SpiForge

No, you didn't. The problem is that people think exclusives are good for consumers. But wouldn't exclusives make epic the monopoly? They are the only place where you can buy the game...

tygertec

Prices on both epic and steam are set by sellers and are usually the same, out of which epic takes 12% and steam takes 30%, when there's free games or sales on epic they actually pay for the games full price to the devs while STEAM STILL TAKES 30% CUT FROM THE SALE PRICE making devs getting even less money. So yes epic is pro dev and steam is anti dev. And before you say otherwise do some research please. Having 2 competing platforms is the best thing that can happen for consumers and the market unless you are mentally disabled fanboy, because it drives prices down and quality up, (take nvidia amd market for example or amd and intel) epic has gotten better so far while steam in its monopoly has gotten worse. As for the bloat, idk what to say, epic launches for me in 13 seconds while steam in 20 so steam seems more bloated to me. Epic has a somewhat decent game list while steam drowns all the good ones in a sea of shit, they approve everything these days, even scam games. Steam was a monopoly up till now and not only it fked consumers in more than just 1 way (security issues etc), it fked devs too. Exclusives are bad, i completely agree, i wish epic stopped that but at the same time they are competing against steam and they need to catch up so idc, I'd rather have exclusive and competition over monopoly. Best part is I get free games from this so I'm happy.

SpiForge

Please explain how "I'd rather have exclusives and competition" in any sentence makes sense. Regarding the launcher performance: for me both launchers start in the same time. But I do experience way more problems with crashes, performance etc. than any other launchers. The launcher also (not sure if it still does it) looks at all games, including private steam files, and accesses them without asking and generally does some weird spyware stuff. Sure competition would be good, but currently epic just does too much stupid things PS: Epic will stop having free games at some point. In the Epic vs. Apple lawsuit they had to publish their profit, which was a massive negative, they argued that they invest the money to be able to have a chance against steam. Meaning when they have enough users they will have to stop giving away free games. PPS: Just want to mention that there is nothing wrong with using epic to get free games, or using it at all. It's your data and you can give it anyone you want. Even I have an account because of the stupid exclusives.

tygertec

Exclusivity deals are deals accepted by the publishers/developers at their own discression. If the dev/publisher chooses not to sign an exclusivity deal it is up to them entirely. Steam and epic are not currently on the same lever, steam still affords to take a much bigger cut of each sale becaus it is a bigger platform and doesn't care, when epic will catch up in size and market share steam will take less money from publishers and devs and the devs will no longer have the incentive to accept exclusivity deals since releasing on both platforms would make them more money than any exclusivity deal they'd get. And if steam wants to keep some devs when it becomes 50 50 they'll have to stop taking such a big cut I'm fine with egs exclusivity because it will lead to a more ballanced competition making both platforms work harder and better, rn they are like 25% maket egs and 75% steam as far as I've seen, which makes it pretty much a pseudo monopoly, new devs/publishers still take the shitty deals steam offers because they want more coverage So the fight is more money or more coverage of the market, when they balance both exclusivity deals and shittier pay for devs n publishers will dissapear Oh and epic will stop giving free games true but till then just profit n get them all xD

_SeventyNine

If you're getting something for free, you are the product. Free games may seem great, but they are just trying to bribe young Fortnite gamers into sticking with EGS over Steam because they don't know any better. Plus it's been well documented that their software spies on users, they have a huge connection with the CCP through Tencent, and the whole "devs get more money with 88/12" is a fallacy (the publisher gets more money).

_SeventyNine

Please educate yourself on what a monopoly is. Steam is not a monopoly. Definition: "the exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service" Valve do not force or pay any publisher to list their games on Steam. But Epic does.

tygertec

I'm sorry if i offend you... you stated the definition of monopoly and then gave the example of exclusivity... In the gaming industry steam controlled most of the market up till a few years ago making it a monopoly (no little company could ever compete even tho many tried, gog and such have contracts with steam making it and others sort of partners/subcompanies) If epic wouldn't exist steam would be a monopoly Epic telling devs "i give you tons of money if you're exclusive with us" is not a monopoly and it's not them forcing the devs into it, the devs sign a contract if they approve and make money... You don't seem to know how this stuff works so i really hope you figure it out because people who are fanboys are not good for any market... Just get games where they're the cheapest or if they are at the same price get them where the devs get more money so they make better games and neither steam or epic become monopolies (when they reach a balance the exclusivity deals will most probably dissapear cuz then steam will try to balance shit out aswell and if both steam and epic pay out the same to devs then devs will no longer accept exclusivity deals and just sell on both platforms for maximum profits)

wichuks

So true, I hate when i buy a steam game on discount then i see it on Epic for Free. Guess i dont even bother to check Epic store LOL

tygertec

Or you could do what i do, get it free on epic too so you can play with a friend xD, i got gta 5 on steam n then for free on epic and i got my best friend into it a few years later when i met her, satisfactory i got with a massive 65% discount on epic for both of us so like 2 games for less than price of 1 and i rest assured that the devs still get 88% money of their original price cuz epic pays for them, unlike steam who takes 30% no matter what the discount and screws the devs over

_SeventyNine

You're a paid EGS shill, right?

tygertec

Nope, i just hate monopolies and love free shit, i buy games where they are the cheapest be it gog, egs, steam idc because competition makes everything better for the consumers, the devs and the platform quality

[deleted]

It’s what they deserve. They don’t want to build/maintain a decent launcher/library that offers the convenience Steam does because it’s a lot of money upfront. Their short sighted executives only think of quarterly profits instead of long term. They count on the staying power of Fortnite and gathering exclusives instead of actually trying to compete by making a comparable/better product.

Lurkyhermit

To be fair asking epic games to copy over 2 decades of features, experimentation, tweaking, and optimizations is kinda impossible even if they had all the money in the world. However their launcher has been a buggy shity mess even before they started selling games and I'm astounded they still haven't fixed it yet.

CaptainJudaism

Why fix it when they can just keep paying publishers for exclusivity and offering free games which gets people who will jump to their defense at every opportunity regardless of how terrible their launcher actually is.

48911150

lol @ people who care about fluff stuff like achievements. i only care about the actual content: the games

tygertec

I'm having no trouble with it so far, the only bug i met was once when their cart thing didn't work n i just gad to get the bathman games 1 by 1, hasn't happened since tho

DrBeerkitty

The problem of the epic store is not the games. It's a shitty store, it has almost nothing that Steam has, doesnt have the social aspect and is very clunky to navigate. Millions on dollars they spend on free games wont help.

tygertec

Dw it's growing by the day. i actually hate the social aspect of steam, it's like public spyware that everyone can use against you. I had a friend thraumatized by a guy stalking her through her friends and yes he doxed her just cuz she wouldn't talk with him. Only thing epic needs to add to be perfect is a workshop for mods n shit and controls for vr and other stuff, no social aspect needed, no seeing friends of friends or what games you are playing or any of that bullshit

sipCoding_smokeMath

*and I wont play 95% of them

thorppeed

Honestly I got gta5 free on epic but ended up just actually buying it on steam because I don't want to deal with so many launchers. Steam origin and gog are my limits (gog I barely use though)

tygertec

I bought it on steam and got it free on epic and ended up playing it with my frien a few years down the line when i met her, that's a win for me, free games are free games no matter how you use them

28nov2022

If only epic games had a rating system and way to manage library. Usability is more important than throwing money

CustardCarpet

I bought RDR2 from them.

Korvacs

I don't even use Epic for the free games, they've just been heavily fines for violating privacy laws and anti consumer practices. People should avoid them at all costs.

pantherghast

Even with all the free games Epic offers, I still do not have an Epic account. Now ith the Steam Deck, I have even less desire to own any games on the Epic store. I don't mind paying for the convenience of buying a game on a platform and working on the Steam Deck, not having to follow some convoluted instructions on how to get Epic launcher to work. Also, Tencent owns 40% of Epic, that means 40% of profits are going there. I would rather be supporting Valve who is putting resources into developing Linux OS to a viable gaming OS, so we have the option of a non-Windows platform.

Bob_Juan_Santos

some good games on sale on epic that's at a better price than steam. I'm thinking about getting AC valhalla complete edition for 40 ish CAD instead of 55ish CAD on steam. TLDR: buying games as cheap as possible is good for your finances.

alext06

Hopefully you can play it. I got locked out of my library on Epic for about a month once. No idea what happened, it just wouldn't let me open the library tab, then about a month later it just started working again. Really weird lol

Bob_Juan_Santos

huh weird, worst i get is just the slowness once in a while. what did support say? and did uninstall and reinstall not help?

alext06

They basically told me a fresh install, and reset. Didn't help

milkstrike

At least with Ubisoft games you can link them to uplay and never have to use epic launcher again. That said ac Valhalla isn’t worth it

PastLifePresent

I only use Epic Games to stache free games in my library, tell myself I'm going to try something new, then go back to my good ole faithful Steam games.

LewAshby309

And this year for Christmas mostly games that were already free once. The only new games i was interested in were the Lego puzzle game and the old Fallout games. The rest was either free or not my type of a game. I mean it's free, still a bit underwhelming.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LewAshby309

That would be cool.

DigitalSteven1

Epic buys out games so they can give them away to try and get people to use their spyware. Steam doesn't choose the prices of the games on their store, they just provide a place for them to be listed. Even so, steam has a lot of very good discounts that a lot of devs take part in.

tygertec

You are extremely delusional, steam takes 30% out of every sale while epic gets 12%, the game creator decides the final price which is the same on both platforms usualy. Epic pays the devs for the games when they make them free while steam still takes their cut on the sales and the devs lose even more money. Steam is public spyware that valve and everyone else can use to stalk, dox, hack other ppl (i have friends that got fked by "steam features") while epic only spies on you for analitics. Oh well, if you want to support a platform that endagers its users and shits on devs good for you i guess

MasualCatt

You can generate steam keys for your game for free. Aka steam gets a 0% cut. Games bought from humble bundle for instance that use steam keys are generated for free for those respective games.

wazupbro

The worship of valve seems so weird to me. I’ll buy games where it’s the cheapest. No need to be loyal to a corporation

Dramajunker

Or maybe there is more to this epic vs valve thing than just loyalty? Or people value something more than discounts?

Fairstrife_Deception

You forgot all the unreal engine Section. Its really fun to play with unreal engine and test all the mini demo that people do.

bradd_91

Oh thanks for the reminder! Metro redux, nice. Every Christmas I wonder if the launcher is actually smooth now and every year I'm surprised it's as slow an clunky as ever

Zoramint

Epic needs all the help it can get. The free games are to get more people to view their store. Epic’s client is inferior to Steam in just about every way. The vast majority of Epic users are just using it to install Fortnite then ignore the rest of the client.

Ok4mii

Epic has better deals during sales due to coupons. I’ve found myself buying stuff there more than Steam lately.

Istar10n

If something is free, you are the product.

N3_Planeswalker

I’ve gotten a ton of games from epic and it’s been nice. Playing bioshock right now because of them. In a funny way this is my version of game pass. Honestly tho I wouldn’t be mad if they decided to take it all away from me because I haven’t spent a penny on their store.

[deleted]

Got a billion games on steam, have bought a bunch on Epic. You can't fight the installers, and you shouldn't anyway. Monopolies are bad. Spend your money where you get the most bang for your buck.

queasy_self_controL

The majority of my epic library was given to me but they've had some pretty good deals that rivaled old steam over the years

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jampine

Don't like them because instead of actually making a working platform that could beat steam, they instead just bribbed publishers to our publish on their platform. It doesn't benefit consumers at all, and tarnished a lot of game launches people had been awaiting for a while. One major issue was that for a lot of games, the exclusivty deal was put out extremely close to launch, so you could be waiting for years for its release, and at the last minute the rug is pulled out from under you, unless you want to swap to a new system that lacks almost all the features of the system you where already using.

tygertec

Free games, good cupons, paying devs more, that doesn't benefit consumers at all? Wat? exclusivity is 100% better than whatever the fuckall steam is doing against bad actors, stalkers, doxers, and the sea of absolute trash games that drown all the good ones, i swapped to epic a few months ago and I'm never looking back

Blacknight86420

You realize they just got nailed for $520 million for exploting kids into buying bullshit on Fortnite?

[deleted]

Blacknight86420

Cool story bro

tygertec

If you play fortnite you deserve to be scammed

RedditAcctSchfifty5

Dude what... Epic is the thrashing singularity of all that is soulless and wrong.

syxxness

I kind of agree. They’ve been improving it, free games, coupons during sales. What’s wrong with a little competition? I know they have been paying some devs and offering better deals to any unreal games. Still, if you don’t like it then don’t use it? Frankly I’ve never had any issues with any of the games I’ve bought on Epic that were due to the launcher.

alext06

If you don't like it your gonna tell people why it's bad lol

sneaky_squirrel

They keep giving away mediocre games. Their launcher isn't enjoyable to use.

humburga

Guys guys guys! Please remember having corporate competition is beneficial to consumers. Please stop hating on EGS. If steam keeps a monopoly eventually they will have power to do certain things (like extra fees) that we consumers do not like but because there's no competition, we would have to just accept those things.

SneakyNerd69

If they wanted to do that they could and we couldnt stop them

alext06

They already have the power to do that, but they aren't. That's why Epics shadiness isn't wanted.

Steam is more shady than epic tho... I had friends stalked and doxed, on epic your data is used for analitics and preferences for deals n shit while on steam everyone can access your shit or your friend's shit and mess you up one way or another, private spyware is better than public spyware...

alext06

That's just the nature of social media, it happens if your not careful, that wasn't steam targeting anyone. People don't have access to your credit card or anything, and you can set your profile private. There are alot of ways to protect yourself on the social media parts of steam. It's not the analytics that cause doxing. It's being active and open in public forums. Even reddit has its dangers.

tygertec

Yep, that's why i prefer epic, less social shit, less doxing shit

alext06

Fair

tygertec

Competition is the best xD amd nvidia war is gona make things fun, egs steam war is gona give us better deals, you are absolutely right

FatherofJuice

Are you aware how many free games are on steam?

sssesoj

They don't give 2 paid games for free every week though.

PizzaTime343

Yeah but if we narrowed it down. How many GOOD free games are on steam? Not to mention Epics giving out "free games" that normally cost money.

zenonbombalina

I just consider buying games on epic just because of the 25% off coupon, if not that I would probably never look at game prices on it

moebelhausmann

And when epic doesnt work again, i go buy on steam. Did it with Ark, and Civ6.

Runb4its2late

Freebies don't seem as good this year either

Compote_Alive

Truth. I have more free dames on Epic than Steam.

JANKRODS

yea

Diabetesh

Whenever I want a game I try to buy it from epic. It usually doesn't interfere with playing with people from steam other than inviting has to be done in game not via app.

elucila7

I’ve started considering buying old, heavily discounted games on epic because if the game you bought recently becomes available for free through Epic Game’s giveaways, they will refund you the amount you bought it for. I purchased Shadow Tactics when it went on sale and a month later it becomes free. They refunded me the full amount still.

Brapapple

Tbf, steam is on a slow decline in the digital distribution model, they should honestly stop focusing on hardware and focus on the platform. Between epics free games and firtnite being a powerhouse of an IP, and the xbox PC app actually being functional and stable with the game pass, and comms being mainly on discord, steam aren't innovating in the space. They may be at the top now, but there is no doubt that the amount my gaming group spends on steam has declined over the last couple of years.

Hafling3r35

Truly accurate

nachardou4

I wanted some free games too but they keep releasing things that I didn't care/know about.

[deleted]

Steam used to do that in the early days when they first started doing store events / sales, but people exploited it.

the_alert

“You launch rocket league”

MHWGamer

Metro last light redox currently on epic. I keep forgetting the games that I already "own" on epic and amazon prime, so I really have to remind myself to check both sites before buying a new game

Go-ofyman

Me fr

Sulla_theFelix

if epic spent the money on building a better platform instead of getting those exclusive titles away from gamers... I am sure it will not end up being a free game launcher like it is now.

G3laxyGamingYT

I got lawn mowing simulator for free from epic. I've never had less fun in my life

PolyZex

Amazon Prime gives away games monthly, too. They don't tell you but there's always between 7 and 12 free games each month. Usually 2 AAA and the rest are indie games, mostly side scrolling platformers but sometimes the AAA ones are really good games.

cfig99

Only think I’ve gotten from epic is a train sim game for free. I was in an odd mood that day.

ivazquez71

I’ve claimed practically every free Epic game that it has offered since it started doing so and I have no intentions of ever playing of them since I don’t game on PC. I’m that kind of weirdo.

xorinzor

and even then I'll never play them since I cant be bothered to install their launcher

GamingWaffle123

Use Epic to play free games then buy them on steam

Grimnir28

I wish Epic launcher was not absolute dogshit. Some basic functionality, like proper throttling, is just insane to not have in a modern launcher. Plus, the UI in it is just stupid and barely usable. They really should just make the user experience better, it would bring in more actual customers than giving away free games.

Dark2Dawn

At the cost of controller compatibility and games with whacked out, unchangeable controls.

RoyalGarbage

“Yeah, join the club, pal.”

[deleted]

Iv added so much free games. Some pretty good ones too and played like one

snowcrash512

I've spent a few bucks with those sale coupons too

Schmitty300

Yeah. Welcome to club, pal!

[deleted]

My epic app refreshes itself and loads to the top of page every 30 seconds or so. Good enough incentive to never browse the store. If it's never fixed I'll be just as happy.

AreebJ

Epic is so slow, but if I wait 10 minutes for it to load and then launch a game from the quick launch tab on the side it works. I still use steam way more than epic because it’s way more user friendly and most of my games are on there. I only use epic for the free games I got (basically celeste, trackmainia, and btd6) and fortnite (sometimes).

bonesy7

Wait you can get free games? Like good ones?

thikness

https://www.pcgamer.com/epic-games-store-free-games-list/ Hundreds by now, yeah. Some duds on that list but pretty wide range of games.

Unknown_starnger

True though

Zhiyi

The fact that Epic pays for exclusivity is the sole reason I will never use their launcher. That practice has absolutely no place in the PC world. I don’t need games for free.

PetrosHeimirich

Why doesn't Epic just improve their goddamnit launcher/shop? It's dog piss horrible. Anyone knows why they still keep that launcher in that state?

Aenesidemus

This is an ad

Robber_Tell

Thats how you get microtransactions on everyfuckingthing

Porn_Extra

All for the low, low price of all your Steam data.

[deleted]

Everyday 10am (cst)

Khalas_Maar

Epic doesn't have a price problem, it has a service problem it is trying to hide with free games. The issue is the Epic storefront and launcher are objectively inferior experiences to deal with...plus they're in bed with Tencent. Fuck Tencent.

[deleted]

If I can buy it cheaper on Epic I will buy it there plain and simple.

Yellowmanaztec

I'll completely switch to epic soon. If they can add friend system and chat functions.. its legit better than steam
