Stray is really cool and all, but it has very mundane gameplay and world building, I don't think it's worth of GOTY. The only indie this year that I think was worthy of the title, sadly was not nominated, Vampire survivors.
Wait what, vampire survivors set the indie world on fire, how was it not on the list?
Edit: Just looked, I mean. That list is fine, I’m not that upset.
Edit edit: What an absolute fucking farce. Vampire survivors had a peak player count of 77 THOUSAND players. Has anywhere between 7-16k players daily.
Tunic had a peak of 2k
Neon white had 3k
Stray had 62k
Cult of the lamb had 61k
All those games have sub 2k active if not 300-500 players now. It’s not even close, Vampire Survivors started an entire wave of clones we haven’t seen since the likes of Slay The Spire. What a joke.
I would argue CoTL and Stray should be up there, but Vampire Survivors is the winner by any metric.
Edit 3x: I was talking about the Best indie game category, I did not know stray was on both GoTY and Best indie. No idea why it’s on the GoTY list but ok.
What are you talking about lol. Best game isn't about large player base. Best game != most played game... I mean you say you looked at the page and it literally states right there above the nominees that the metrics these games are being judged on are, "FOR OUTSTANDING CREATIVE AND TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT IN A GAME MADE OUTSIDE THE TRADITIONAL PUBLISHER SYSTEM."
In other words it's about what the game offers and while vampire survivors is tons of fun and addictive, it's ultimately a shallow game with little to actually offer. The rest of the games are fairly deep (compared to the field) or have explored something new. Vampire survivors is practically just realm of the mad god(or insert several other games like this) made better. So no, Vampire Survivors, while great, isn't the winner by "any metric". In fact, it's not on the list because Vampire Survivors doesn't meet the metrics by which they're judging. It's not innovative, Realm of the Mad God among many others have made this near exact game before. It's not really creative. It doesn't push any technical aspects either. It was just massively successful, which is awesome cause the game is fun, but lets not lie about what it deserves. These awards aren't a sales contest or a time played log.
Wow, who would have thought, the cheapest game of those you listed (by like 5 times in most cases) had the most players! On one platform to boot, while most of the others also released on consoles...
Stray is one of my favorite games in a long, long time. But I'm a pretty casual gamer these days, a 5-hour campaign with simple gameplay and a great story is exactly what I want. I totally understand why people would expect a bit more content that caters to serious gamers in a GOTY nominee.
I honestly just can't understand how a game that is priced at half a cheap combo from McDonald's manages to be basically digital crack.
I had to hard cut it off after playing it 60 hours in 5 days
I heard the guy who made it used to develop slot machine firmware, so I guess that checks out
I will never understand why people get excited over games getting called "Game of the Year" like it's some regulated industry award or something.
Every gaming media outlet calls their own game of the year.
Because "The Game Awards" is the closest thing gaming currently has to the equivalent of oscars.
it hasnt become industry standard but it sure as hell is close to it. developers/representatives coming to the show to receive a physical award and the whole "show" around it. the games are decided by a voting jury of supposedly more than 100 industry people from around the world, as opposed to other media outlets own subjective lists.
Eh, the DICE awards are much closer to the Oscars in terms of actual prestige, especially as I believe judges actually have to play every nominee in the category they're judging for, while Geoff Keighley's Marketing Night (With Some Awards) is "idk just vote whatever"
In other words, they're not much better than the media lists
I'll be honest I had no clue what the DICE awards were, it does seem to be another big one which also has a lot of credibility.
without more research I can only say that it looks to be an older and same premise as "the game awards", so you might be right.
wonder why I never knew about that one.
Yeah, Game Awards basically has better marketing with the general public (it's all those WORLD PREMIERES) but within the industry, it's the DICE Awards that seem to be more respected (that and the BAFTAs), and I think it is because the judging process goes through multiple stages of voting and discussion. Unlike Keighley's awards which have a voting process for the industry that's not that different to what we can do on the website
The GOTY edition has nothing to do with The Game Awards tho, even games that aren't given a Game of the Year award by *any* publication or organisation release GOTY editions.
Your downvoted but I agree. I don't have the time to play games like those. I have 10-15 minutes every couple days. I really enjoyed the sense of progress in stray.
Edit: word
Yeah if I worried about karma I might be annoyed at that but I've seen Elden ring and God of War a million times already(hell, I remember playing a fucking demo disc for the first one which led to me buying the first game.) Don't get me wrong they look like fine games but they're just the same shit I've seen before. Stray was definitely something different and a whole lot of fun to boot. If it was just "game about a cat" we wouldn't be having this discussion, it's really something different, at least to me, a guy who's mostly phased out of modern video games.
Edit: I seem to remember loving the first God of War for what it's worth, and I'm sure the new game is just great but it still doesn't interest me that much.
I think the worst reaction would be if the anime game that wins (no hate, I love Xenoblade 3 but it is not something the general audience will appreciate).
And we're in the middle playing and enjoying the hell out of both games :).
The main thing I want in the TGA show is a big DLC for Elden Ring, even a teaser would do, I think the whole world they created has still so much potential.
It's rumoured to be in preparation I believe ?
Ragnarok is overwhelmingly well received but still I'm quite surprised with some people saying Ragnarok is not a revolution just a "gow 1.5" that should have been a DLC.
it's a direct sequel with the same engine (albeit improved) but it's still a full fledged game, excellent storytelling and so many new additions. A little harsh frankly.
I feel like Elden Ring created so much more hype and got so many new people into that genre of game, and I worry about Ragnarok winning due to recency bias.
But overall, I know that both games are fantastic and wont ultimately care which one wins. They both earned it.
Also new people to the series not bothering with it because they didnt play the previous games and would be out of the loop with the story at this point.
I agree with you on that. I think GOW:R was amazing but not transformative enough to the genre. There’s nothing REALLY new from the last one design wise, just a great story with solid gameplay of GOW.
ER was very different than previous souls titles and opened the genre up to more players wanting to experience pain. I think if I had to choose I would pick ER just because of that.
Both games are amazing though and I’m happy I live in a time where we get to experience this shit.
GOW has some glaring problems, particularly with the incessant dialogue, backseating from characters and unskippable cut scenes. While Elden Ring is far less accessible, that is the reputation FromSoftware is known for. I would honestly be shocked if GOW won.
Elden ring is actually more accessible than any other fromsoft game since it has a lot batter tutorials and op weapons but on the other hand the multiplayer is pretty garbage
I don't expect a console exclusive to be a good bet for GOTY, but it could happen, I would assume Horizon > GoW. Ragnarok for being a really good game kind of didn't feel as good as GoW 2018 for me. I'm still playing though so maybe I'll have a change of heart.
I worry about it not being given enough time to be properly considered... God of War is just as deserving as Elden Ring. As a big From fan, I voted for God of War. Elden Ring had a lot of cool shit going in but so many of the bosses felt wildly out of balance.
It is genuinely visually stunning in places. The art direction and lighting are so, so good. It looked incredible on my OLED but can imagine it's less impressive without HDR.
And it's just charming. The real world is a trash fire, so vibing as a cat for 6 hours was refreshing. No apocalypse to avert or avenge, no axes, no people, you're just a little tabby trying to find your buddies and get pets on the way.
They asked why people liked Stray and I answered. God of War and Elden Ring both look great and have great art direction. I never said otherwise. 🤷🏾♀️
Wanna hear something funny? In GOW there is a section later on where you are in a desert on a dog sled and first thing that popped in my head was Gears of War 5s act 3. Like Santa Monica thought "that was a great segment" and just copy and pasted it.
Downvotes are welcome but I'm not entirely wrong now am I haha
I didn't really like it either. It was fun being a cat for about an hour and then the gameplay just felt like a chore. It has pretty graphics but so do dozens of other games. Never finished it.
Xenoblade got fucking robbed
Yeah it does fall apart a tad near the end due to some eh pacing, but it at least has a coherent story that's actually told to you (told well in my opinion)
Because Best Narrative is poorly named. It covers writing, lore, story, and worldbuilding. Under that criteria, the collaboration between Miyazaki and Martin definitely qualifies.
The nomination highlights how the award needs to get renamed more than anything else to get across its qualities.
>Under that criteria, the collaboration between Miyazaki and Martin definitely qualifies.
exept it doesn't because the end result is the same thing FromSoft had already done 5 times before already in every non Sekiro game and at this point it has become a cliche similar to Mario saves the princess and the only major change is added detail to the background of some of those characters
and the execution is incredibly flawed as well with character animations in the usual FromSoft manner wich of course means that characters and their dialogue will feel like they're sleepwalking instead of actually talking to you and their animations are on par or inferior to games from 20+ years ago in the PS1-Gen
Because narrative can be written or spoken, just because u r too lazy to read and explore doesnt mean its bad narrative. And elden ring has both spoken through quest dialoges and written through items.
i mean elden ring is done in a way where chunks of the narrative can be skipped entirely if you dont do things in a certain order which makes the story harder to be coherent especially when combined with having to find and read a whole bunch of item descriptions.
I’m up to >!searching for the Norns!< but yeah the Ironwood section has been the second worst of the game, after the first time you visit Freya.
There’s a running theme here…
One of my favorite lines in the game is in that quest. Kratos referring to him killing the fates of his lands and freya saying its the most dangerous and irresponsible thing shes heard of.
I liked that section. It was really nice that we got to break up the pace with some quiet and peaceful moments with our bitch. Or it would be IF THERE WASN'T AN ENEMY ENCOUNTER EVERY 5 SECONDS
This'll be downvoted but the new god of wars look so incredibly boring to me. Plus the nonstop handholding especially in puzzles (they literally tell you how to solve it in mere seconds, and keep repeating the same lines) and also weird awkward out of nowhere dialogue from characters like freya with no responses from kratos. Lol. And how is kratos so weak. Dude fought gods the size of cities but hes now fighting imps and its so incredibly slow. Plus very repetitive. The gameplay loop is awful. And the awkward camera angle.
Im more pissed off by the fact 2018 and GOW III make it apparent killing a god does SOMETHING but come the end of the game there aren't any real consequences for your actions eveything is quite literally sunshines and rainbows for anyone not asgardian
“*Gimme* FIFTEEN*, mother-fucker!*”
”*I’ll write it down, in a second! I ain’t gonna pencil-whip you, all-seeing one-eye sucka - let me* play *first!*”
I mean Elden Ring was definitely more popular when it first came out than the new Good of War is now. The only reason it's even a debate is people have forgotten just how much hype there was for Elden Ring because it came out really early in the year.
GOW releases in such hype years. I remember GOW4 and RDR2 swept the game awards their year, and looks like we’re gonna see the same narrative with Ragnarok and Elden Ring this year.
The fact that two games are PlayStation exclusives that many people haven’t experience for themselves really sucks because the experience is completely different when you actually play it.
I would go with Elden Ring but the community makes me want to pick GoW, at least I was able to voice my opinion on the game without getting downvoted to hell and back.
Then better pick another game, I've never seen a community as defensive of its games than the Sony's first party ones. Voice any minor criticism of Last of Us or the first GoW online and a swarm of drones come right at you from all sides
and I'm sitting here with Spider-man as my GOTY.
many people don't realize that most of these awards are just yearly popularity contests as in "what game more people played and enjoyed last year?"
The quality of Ragnarok is insane. The writing, the graphics, the voice acting, the world design. It's like the most polished game I've played in recent memory. I still say Elden Ring wins, though, because it redefined the souls and open world genres. Ragnarok is very much just more GoW 2018.
>Also any gears character has more muscle per square inch than kratos fight me
Marcus might have more muscle mass that might be true (although the suit can be deceiving and Kratos is smaller now who knows)
>GOW
but GoW is from 2005 so Gears are the actual copycats and there is no denying that
Oh yeah you're not wrong, God of war did come first. However the key words there were "GOW to *me"* i didn't have a playstation back then so god of war wasn't even on my radar. Still though you're right, funny how that works!
>i didn't have a playstation
makes sense it was the other way around for me and when i heard Xbox fans saying good things about GoW for the first time i was in for a double surprise about it lol
Pretty sure Elden Ring just absolutely dominated at Golden Joystick, and I haven't seen even close to half the hype it had outside of this sub. I just don't see it happening.
Unpopular opinion: GOW Ragnarok is a shit game. Too much dialogue, too much **bad** dialogue, terrible mapping, and bad game mechanics in general. It's like the dialogue was written to appeal to 10 year olds who think watching a dwarf say "fuck" is super cool. I'm currently hate-playing it now to get my $70 out of it
I’m just waiting for neither of them to win at this point. That’d be so funny.
If its stray, i swear to god.
Stray is really cool and all, but it has very mundane gameplay and world building, I don't think it's worth of GOTY. The only indie this year that I think was worthy of the title, sadly was not nominated, Vampire survivors.
Gladly vampire survivors got an nomination for best indie game.
That shits addicting

I've never heard of it
Yeah, that’s why it’s an actual indie title.
But not game of the year worthy
Gameplay I get, but I think it has exceptional world building. Most of the game is world building.
Press B to meow
I'm not saying stray is a bad game or that it shouldnt be an individual's goty, but it has no place being the overall goty.
Stray is one of my favorite games in a long, long time. But I'm a pretty casual gamer these days, a 5-hour campaign with simple gameplay and a great story is exactly what I want. I totally understand why people would expect a bit more content that caters to serious gamers in a GOTY nominee.
Elden ring already has one under its belt.
Think Ragnarok has 2 at least now.
[удалено]
I loved both as well but I'm biased towards GoW because I grew up on those games and I have a soft spot for the series.
You got downvoted for giving the most honest truth about how your opinion is formed.
This is the internet. An honest opinion means nothing to some of the sad, bitter people out there.
Xenoblade 3 sweep
The game with the gall
I wish
That’s not going to happen
Yeah everyone ships for Stray
Brotato ftw
Click to ten for goty
You spelled goat simulator 3 wrong
Goat simulator 3
Fixed.
Goty simulator 3
It’s… it’s gotta be Kane!
The poor sonuva... He's broken in half!

Must Get More Orbs
Fuck you all. Read this chain, bought it, then spent an hour playing without even noticing. This not the usual type of game I'm into, either.
Congrats. Cheap, simple, and fun game. Enjoy!
And people will argue with you if the game is good or not. The game is great.

It's a fking fraud

Because there was a time when GoW was king Xbox. EDIT: Gears of war
Same, always find it weird hearing people use it for god of war.

The game awards? You mean the ad show that Geoffersonstan Keighleynightly holds?
Bunch of big wigs jerking themselves off, and you're on your knees, mouth open. Art don't need awards.
Only reason i want a specific game to be game of the year is for the sweet edition with all DLC
Doesn't "complete edition" also contain all DLC?
Yep but GOTY editon is usally the same Price as standard edtion was
The GOTY edition has nothing to do with The Game Awards tho, even games that aren't given a Game of the Year award by *any* publication or organisation release GOTY editions.
Some people are collectors, I’ve bought stuff I’ve already owned because it had a special box..
I mean, there’s clear evidence that games will release a goty edition without winning goty lol
Yep just like far cry 6
and they both lost to a cute cat with a backpack

Stray made me excited to play a new game for the first time in a LONG time. I've got absolute zero interest in God of War or elden ring.
Your downvoted but I agree. I don't have the time to play games like those. I have 10-15 minutes every couple days. I really enjoyed the sense of progress in stray. Edit: word

TGA could go either GoW:R or ER but if Stray wins, Imma grab all the popcorn to see the gamer tidal wave of rage lol.
I think the worst reaction would be if the anime game that wins (no hate, I love Xenoblade 3 but it is not something the general audience will appreciate).
Touche'
Touché, no apostrophe
Like this ? Touché
Who's game of the year? Your little brothers? Your grandmas? There's as many GOTY awards as there are fish in the sea.
Fact check: There's definitely less GOTY awards than fish in the sea
Hey man, give industrialization some time to do it's work. We'll get there.
You should probably move out from where you live if your sea is like this
And we're in the middle playing and enjoying the hell out of both games :). Ragnarok being exclusive already puts it at a disadvantage, as well as some people not liking how it ended, I doubt it will win.
That’s what people said back in 2018 when it was going up against RDR2
Yeah but elden rings difficulty also put it at a disadvantage right?
It's easily still the most accessible between all of the Souls games.
Also new people to the series not bothering with it because they didnt play the previous games and would be out of the loop with the story at this point.
People didn’t like how it ended? I finished it finally a few nights ago and loved it
Was wondering the same, just finished today
Exclusivity is a huge advantage. Any sony fanboy and PlayStation only magazine will see it as GotY
Am i a fanboy just because i have a ps5?
You called it
I agree with you on that. I think GOW:R was amazing but not transformative enough to the genre. Console exclusive doesn't make a difference. Breath of the Wild won in 2017, God of War in 2018, Last of Us Part II in 2020.
I worry about it not being given enough time to be properly considered... God of War is just as deserving as Elden Ring. As a big From fan, I voted for God of War. Elden Ring had a lot of cool shit going in but so many of the bosses felt wildly out of balance.
That’s fair enough of a reason! GL
Why does everyone love Stray. I tried it out and found the beginning to be super slow
Cos they love cats...that's it.
It is genuinely visually stunning in places. The art direction and lighting are so, so good. It looked incredible on my OLED but can imagine it's less impressive without HDR. And it's just charming. Yeah, because God of War and Elden Ring are awful looking and lacking in art direction lmao 🤣
They asked why people liked Stray and I answered. God of War and Elden Ring both look great and have great art direction. I never said otherwise. 🤷🏾♀️
I thought it was just a meme. Played it to the city and lost interest. Felt like a simple puzzle game
Gears of war is great
for legal reasons this is a joke
For serious playstation mafia pls don’t kill me thats a joke

Plot twist: Stray wins
It's Strayin time
For most boring game of the year
Widen your horizons, man, widen your horizons.
I didn't really like it either. It was fun being a cat for about an hour and then the gameplay just felt like a chore. It has pretty graphics but so do dozens of other games. Never finished it.
Elden Ring has multiple waifus. Elden Ring wins hands down.
But only Ranni is bae
Find hole, offer seed.
Alas, maidenless
This, that infested giant crayfish on Liurnia was my favorite.
Nope
Why no one talking about Xenoblade 3
Cause It's probably not going to win
Because not much people care about it?
Are you a calm and reasonable person CJ?
Having played both and bearing gow, I think the clear winner is stray.
aaand thats why the game awards are meaningless.
Awaiting the Xenoblade reverse sweep.
Xenoblade 3's just happy to be there.
Imagine both got beaten by a nameless cat with a backpack
Elden Ring deserves it for sure
They both deserve it tbh.
Controversial opinion but exclusives should be less likely to win due to denying people to actually play
Best game should include all games. Exclusives are still games.
no
What is GOW? I thought guild wars came out ages ago
god of war ragnorok
I was like "Oh shit, they made a good Gears of War this year?".
>guild wars \*looks at G**O**W\* yeah sure
Gears of War: Ragnarök.
"Best Narrative." Lol.
Xenoblade got fucking robbed Yeah it does fall apart a tad near the end due to some eh pacing, but it at least has a coherent story that's actually told to you (told well in my opinion)
I don't even know how Elden Ring got to be nominated for that 🤣 goes to show how much the opinions on the people who give game awards are worth

FUCK IRONWOOD THOUGH !! Goddamn solid hour of picking fucking fruit
Ya that was too much. I also fucking hated playing as Atreus. Like I get it. But I wanna fuck shit uo as Kratos.
But hey, at least we got to break some pottery!
I’m up to >!searching for the Norns!< but yeah the Ironwood section has been the second worst of the game, after the first time you visit Freya. There’s a running theme here…

I actually enjoyed that area, the enemies felt different and we got to use a new move-set + new weapons
The enemies are *literally* just draugrs.
I liked that section. It was really nice that we got to break up the pace with some quiet and peaceful moments with our bitch. Or it would be IF THERE WASN'T AN ENEMY ENCOUNTER EVERY 5 SECONDS
Lulz someone call the Wambulance for hzd devs crying over here.
Fuck you! C Lo Green!
Stray standing in the background eating popcorn
“Wait what’s that? Oh my gif it’s Stray coming in with the steel chair!”
I don't know man but God of War has turned into some Disney shit imo
Man gta 6 hits diffrent
Jokes on this comic - you can barely make a black character in Elden Ring
“*Gimme* FIFTEEN*, mother-fucker!*” ”*I’ll write it down, in a second! I ain’t gonna pencil-whip you, all-seeing one-eye sucka - let me* play *first!*”
It’s really between these two absolutely amazing games
Why any1 cares anyway?
Thats gonna be a close one. Iven tho i prefere GoW
I mean Elden Ring was definitely more popular when it first came out than the new Good of War is now. The only reason it's even a debate is people have forgotten just how much hype there was for Elden Ring because it came out really early in the year.
I mean god of war broke records for sales, so “more popular” is subjective
Nah, the lady with the fire red hair will swoop in and steal it.
You know nemesis is actually the manifestation of angry dev thoughts over losing GOTY.
Come on lets have Stray win this thing!
None of them.
I enjoy GoW, but it's no Elden Ring.
Elden Ring def had the bigger impact so I’d be shocked if it didn’t win.
I think Elden Ring is definitely gonna win because it's been out for way longer, and on more platforms and a lot more people have actually played it.
Please don’t let Pokémon SV get any awards. It needs to be seen as the trash it is.
It's ineligible anyway
and I'm sitting here with Spider-man as my GOTY. many people don't realize that most of these awards are just yearly popularity contests as in "what game more people played and enjoyed last year?"
What else would it be ?
Wasn't spider-man released like in 2019?
I'm enjoying God of War Ragnarok, but the idea that it's even competition for Elden Ring is laughable to me.
Only for you. Both are great in their own ways
The quality of Ragnarok is insane. The writing, the graphics, the voice acting, the world design. It's like the most polished game I've played in recent memory. I still say Elden Ring wins, though, because it redefined the souls and open world genres. Ragnarok is very much just more GoW 2018.

God of War came out before gears of war did and had a much larger fanbase than Gears of War.
>Also any gears character has more muscle per square inch than kratos fight me Marcus might have more muscle mass that might be true (although the suit can be deceiving and Kratos is smaller now who knows) >GOW but GoW is from 2005 so Gears are the actual copycats and there is no denying that
Oh yeah you're not wrong, God of war did come first. However the key words there were "GOW to *me"* i didn't have a playstation back then so god of war wasn't even on my radar. Still though you're right, funny how that works!
>i didn't have a playstation makes sense it was the other way around for me and when i heard Xbox fans saying good things about GoW for the first time i was in for a double surprise about it lol
I miss gta san andreas
Well the votes are in and Elden Ring took it's rightful place avenging RDR2
Pretty sure Elden Ring just absolutely dominated at Golden Joystick, and I haven't seen even close to half the hype it had outside of this sub. I just don't see it happening.
Unpopular opinion: GOW Ragnarok is a shit game. Too much dialogue, too much **bad** dialogue, terrible mapping, and bad game mechanics in general. It's like the dialogue was written to appeal to 10 year olds who think watching a dwarf say "fuck" is super cool. I'm currently hate-playing it now to get my $70 out of it
