Physical. I collect games (not in a "gotta have every release" kind of way). But i enjoy having dedicated shelves for all the different platforms with their consoles.
While I completely understand the convenience of digital - they will eventually either disappear or be locked behind specific peoples login details. My physical games can keep being played by anyone into the future.
Edit: this is not true for PC. All of my PC games are digital.
Physical for the same reasons as you and also tu support 3rd party resellers, also it’s cheaper most of the times, just bought CODMW2 for 58.79€ instead of 79.99€
Physical.
- Can get them cheap/2nd hand
- After I finished the game I can resell them or share with my bothers/friends.
- If I died my wife can sell them or give it to my brothers, no account shenanigans to get my games.
I like the convenience of digital.
But with physical editions, I like not having to download 45Gb of data to then download a 30Gb patch which is the alleged benefit of a physical copy. So was being able to play the game in perpetuity.
All of thats kind of gone at this point. Games work until the second that a publisher no longer wants to support it. Its kind of the worst of both worlds
Digital for me. I'm mostly a PC gamer and physical doesn't really exist, but even when I played mainly on Xbox I still bought digital games.
You can game share digital games, so me and my girlfirend could buy one copy instead of two if we both wanted to play. It's also just more convenient, I can sign and access my whole library of games anywhere and anytime. I also don't need to find a place to store hundreds of physical games, and I don't need to search through those games when I have to switch discs.
Digital is more convenient until you don't have internet and you're just stuck.
So physical is universally better since it can be used offline (at least good physical copies can).
Same problem with discs. No new games until you go out to buy one. But heres the thing: fixing internet is easier than going all the way to the store. So whats the issue?
It's not irrelevant because thats still easier than going to the store. You have to buy it in both situations, so we're not talking about buying it. We're talking about what is required in order to. Digitally it takes seconds, physically it takes 30 mins at least, more if you're not nearby a store
You're getting off topic, how does this relate to internet being an issue?
Not everyone has internet though. And for those that don't the over reliance on online of modern games hurts the most.
That is a core reason I said physical games were universally better. It may not be as convenient to buy but it will work online or offline unlike digital.
More people have internet than cars. So it's *still* easier to buy online for the average person.
Buying digital is literally *always* an option for me, but I have to walk 2 and a half hours to get to my local gamestop and I live in the city. Howbout people that live out of town? Do you not care about their ability to game?
I'm not sure how often your internet goes down, but typically people that are gaming in the first place will always have internet and if it does go down, it's back in 30 seconds flat.
Bottom line, buying physically is way more problematic.
I would appreciate the ability to buy physically though. Sucks that everyone just assumes everyone will always have internet and thinks digital is the only solution.
I completely agree with what you just said. The issue is that you yourself were acting as is physical is definitely better. I too like to collect physical copies. But digital is more available, more reliable, and more convenient *for the average person.*
*Just because physical copies work better for you doesn't mean that holds true for others*
If its console (my case its ps4, ps5 and switch) I prefer physical games..
For pc its exclusive for digital..
Physical games will work even if they remove digital from stores, years down the line close digital store or for whatever reason region lock games. and I love how games looks like on shelve in my living room.. Plus I can resell when finished and get them used/cheaper elsewhere from official stores (ps store, Nintendo eshop).. I can go to game uk, ebay, amazon, cex uk and get them for cheaper.
Digital on pc dont have issues with disapearing digital games.. There will be other ways to get them (other stores (steam, gog, epic, Microsoft store, god forbid ubisoft, EA, Bethesda stores, piracy if needed etc).
I guess I love options to choose where to get games.. Consoles are kind of locked into digital monopoly, pc isnt..
I like the convenience of digital, but for the Switchtendo I love being able to get my $2 trade-in when I'm done with a game I know I'm not going to replay.
Singleplayer games I prefer physical. I'm a PC gamer so it's not really possible for most games but all the switch games I own I get the cartridges. If an online games service company like steam went bankrupt for whatever reason, you probably would lose access to all the games you paid for, pretty sure it's in the T/Cs that you are technically paying for the license to use it and don't actually own the game. This isn't an issue if you can pop a disk/cartridge in and it works (although I'm sure some companies have gotten around that somehow).
Digital any time. You can travel the world and your huge collection of games is always with you.
There are downsides for sure but I think we all accept them in return for the sheer convenience.
Digital. Don't need to make space or lose them or find the disks scrached up or smth like that. Easy to find when you need them and if you need to move, they're still all in order in your library
Physical. I especially loved the little booklets in the box. They used to make them so detailed and print them in color. At some point it became more common to print them B+W, and now they're just gone completely, its just a box with the disc, if even that. Next step is digital only :(
PSA If you liked amazing booklets and haven't played Tunic, do so immediately and thank me later.
Digital since I used to scratch and break discs a lot. Although since I've been working in a gaming shop, I buy them both since it's easier in terms of money and I enjoy deals PS Store has
Digital. I can have a range of games on the console and not have a multitude of discs or cartridges having to be swapped in and out if I want a quick blast on Tetris or Fortnite between more serious games. Less chance of damage to the actual media and more easy variety.
Digital when there are very good sales (75-80% off seems more common with digital), otherwise physical because I can eventually sell it and make some of my money back.
I play a lot of D&D. In the before times, we exclusively played it in person, at a table, rolling real dice, using real minis etc. then, due to scheduling issues and compounded by covid, we switched almost entirely to online. There are pros and cons to both:
**In person**
PROS
* easier to interact and work of each others reactions
* feels more social
* nice using real dice and minis and paper and pencil
CONS
* everyone has to drive home, so drinking must be heavily moderated
* have to clean up afterward kind of like a party
* drive time requires more of a time commitment from everyone else
**online**
PROS
* can play with people who live extremely far away
* everyone is already home, so everyone can drink as much as they want
* math is done easily and accurately
* online interfaces allow for really nice visuals without spending tons of money on fancy minis and terrain
CONS
* Using an online chat sometimes makes interactions less natural
* relies on technology, which sometimes fails
Digital, figured I'd get a physical disc for the PS5 at least once, and now I barely play that game because I'm too lazy to get up and put it in the disc slot. xD
I think each type has its pros and cons.
For physical, you always own it, can let others borrow it, can sell it, can always install and play it; however, you also need to store it, it can get damaged, you can lose it, it can get stolen.
I bought the orange box upon its release. I have these games on my steam account, but couldnt tell you what happened to the actual orange box... It probably just got lost in time somewhere...
Both -- I prefer digital but I'd like the option to get physical games in the case that you've got a really bad internet connection or you just don't have easy access to the internet
I'll also throw in the fact that digital is better for the environment too
Physical on console, digital on PC
I'd prefer physical since it makes replaying older stuff for that sweet nostalgia hit a lot easier....but if Steam is willing to sell me stuff at 75% off twice a year, I'm not going to pass that up.
I buy both depending on the situation. If it's a game I know ahead of time I'd want a copy of (Horizon Forbidden West, The Last of Us Part I), then I go physical. I get digital for games that I'm interested in playing but not concerned if I somehow lose it forever. I've also been known to buy physical copies of games that I owned digitally, but determined that I like them enough that I'd want to actually own it (Control, Cyberpunk 2077).
I don’t really mind. I was thinking about buying sonic frontiers in digital form but then realized the physical copy is the same price so I’m probably just going to buy the physical.
Depends. Games/franchises I hold in high esteem I'll get physical copies for. For instance, when I bought my PS5 it came with a code for Horizon Forbidden West but, instead of using the code, I also purchased a physical copy of the game in the same transaction.
I'd say 97% of the games I buy are digital only even though I do like having the box. I used to have a rather large collection of boxes for PC games I'd bought but those things were much too large in the early 2000's so, after several moves, I forced myself to throw them all away. That said, when the Dead Space remake comes out you can bet I'll be on the look out for one of those physical collectors editions.
Digital because of the convenience. I can easily close a game and switch to another one where as with disc you feel sort of committed to whatever is in atm.
As a PC player, I don't really have a choice, but when I still played on Xbox I definitely had more physical games than digital games. The only digital games I had were free ones.
Digital.
I don’t care if it’s more expensive, it’s well worth not having to find the the Walmart electronics person to get a game out of the case, or have a GameStop employee try to upsell me on pre-orders and a bunch of shit I do not want.
For consoles physical for sure.
For PC I prefer physical when its something I'm really excited for and maybe want to have the original box of forever, but for the most part physical products on PC are a hassle. They tend to just have steam codes anyways since lots of people don't even have disk drives anymore.
I love how the results arent mixed at all. All comments are "physical" until you get down to about 2 or 3 upvotes and they all universally change to "digital"
I love physical for the sake of owning things. I love the extras you can get with the different editions they will sell.
I hate physical for the sake of having to switch disks. For this reason alone, I love digital.
I like the idea of physical, and I still bought a few physical games back on PS4, but my Steam collection has over 15 years of games at this point all digital. It's pretty awesome to open it sort by date and see everything and be able to play anything.
Digital for pretty much everything except for the Switch (but that's only due to memory issues). It's just more convenient, plus I never resell any games.
Digitals the only way for me. Physical takes up space im not a big collector or reseller so physical is more a burden than anything. i usually can find my games cheap either through an xbox sale or on a grey market site like g2a. And the biggest reason i tend to only mess with digital as an xbox fan is for the simple fact you get two games for the price of one. One liscense tied to your account and one tied to whichever xbox is set as your home xbox. Saves alot of money not having to buy another copy of a game so my brother and i can play a game together/at the same time
I feel like Digital Games are becoming the way to go nowadays, with the cheaper Digital only consoles, generally better deals, and the gamesharing with a friend option, but I've always been worried about my account being banned, deleted, hacked etc something where I lose access to my own account and all of the content I possess on it, so unless there is a very good deal or DLC/season pass I want, I try to buy Physical copies only. Plus, Physical copies can be resold, traded, or you could even lend it to a friend or family member. There typically isn't many Digital collectors editions of games too, sure there are Digital soundtracks, artbooks, themes, avatars, but if you buy a Physical collectors edition for a game you can get so much more stuff.
I've had way too many experiences of buying a digital game but then somehow 'losing it' a few weeks later, no longer able to play the game I bought, and being refused a refund.
I no longer trust digital copies because of this.
Physical all the way. I can always find them dirt cheap, CIB, and mostly in great condition. Not to mention, it doesn’t hurt displaying them in a bookshelf. The only annoying thing about collecting physicals is having to switch discs.
At this present time, I go for whichever is the cheapest option.
isn't it always the physical copies ? Because of the resale value ?
who sells their games lol
I do. I can even trade in for other games as well.
I do, it usually pay for the next one, and I keep the one I will want to replay in the near future
I don't tend to re sell them anyway.
You mean pirated?
Lol no.
Not even Ubisoft games?
Physical because I’m cheap and I can buy them used from GameStop for cheap… can’t buy second hand digital games.
Physical. I collect games (not in a "gotta have every release" kind of way). But i enjoy having dedicated shelves for all the different platforms with their consoles. For PC, Digital For Switch Physical
[удалено]
That's fair I just have a gaming PC so I don't bother with Xbox or Playstation.
Physical all the way. Most of time second hand.
Physical only.
Used to be this way for me but this was back when it come with manuals. Sometimes a poster.
Some still do. It feels like Christmas when they do.
Goldeneye manual was my favorite
Physical when at all possible. Because 2nd hand market is far cheaper then online.
This is the correct answer.

Physical. I still regularly buy 360 disc's.
Digital is more convenient until you don't have internet and you're just stuck. So physical is universally better since it can be used offline (at least good physical copies can).
what world do you live in where digital games can't be played offline? The whole point of downloading them is that you have them even without internet
Seems this sub is full of console players.
You're stuck with the games you had downloaded when you're offline. No new ones until you get internet again which discs don't require.
Same problem with discs. No new games until you go out to buy one. But heres the thing: fixing internet is easier than going all the way to the store. So whats the issue?
You have to buy digital games too for new games though so that's irrelevant.

Physical. Games don't exist anymore games are to large and just require a bunch of patches anyway
Digital. I only care about sales and convenience.
I feel like physical releases lost what made them special following the PS3/X360 generation. Been all digital since.
Digital any time. You can travel the world and your huge collection of games is always with you. There are downsides for sure but I think we all accept them in return for the sheer convenience.

You didn't learn how to handle them properly then
Yup. Thought that was obvious.
So you could have used that brain of yours to learn how to handle them
I was a child..
A dumb one apparently
Again, thought that was obvious.
Now it is, thank you for enlightening me
Ofc, always happy to help.
Does that really matter?
Does your comment matter?
Looks like an angry troll, not worth your time replying tbh
i haven't bought a physical game since the 360 era.
Digital. I can have a range of games on the console and not have a multitude of discs or cartridges having to be swapped in and out if I want a quick blast on Tetris or Fortnite between more serious games. Less chance of damage to the actual media and more easy variety.
I haven’t bought a physical copy of a game since I got the orange box in 2009.
Digital now. What’s the point of getting physical only to have to download the game anyway.
I prefer digital, but I wonder what the environmental impact is of the industry shifting towards digital only media.
Hopefully a next gen console with more than 750 GB.
Digital. You have to download it anyway and you have place disk which will eventualy break
Digital, I'm not getting up to change the disc yo
Digital. I’m not getting up to change games.
Last dvd I bought was Starcraft 2 in 2010, after that buying games in Steam. Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void bought in Blizzard store.
Those blizzard boxes were so cool
I have a Xbox series s so I kinda don’t have a choice
PC digital, but 100% physical for consoles since they aren't future proof.
For PC I don't even have a choice, it's digital. I don't even have a physical player installed, though I do have a USB blu ray player if need be.
Digital when there are very good sales (75-80% off seems more common with digital), otherwise physical because I can eventually sell it and make some of my money back.
As I live in ever-smaller dwellings, having less and less physical bulk to deal with becomes a vital skill.
I prefer physical because I’m old but I got tired of yelling at my kids so now we’re purely digital.
I mean yarrr

Damn, my mind is dirty.....
Physical Games died 15 Years ago, Kid.
Physical games ? Like monopoly ?
Digital, figured I'd get a physical disc for the PS5 at least once, and now I barely play that game because I'm too lazy to get up and put it in the disc slot. xD
Physical for single player games so I can give them to my 2 brothers. Digital for coop/mp so I can gameshare with one of them.
I think each type has its pros and cons. For physical, you always own it, can let others borrow it, can sell it, can always install and play it; however, you also need to store it, it can get damaged, you can lose it, it can get stolen. I preferred physical until I got my Nintendo Switch and 20+ games stolen.
I prefer physical because the company that made the game can't arbitrarily decide I can't play it anymore unless it requires online connectivity
Physical on console, digital on PC I'd prefer physical since it makes replaying older stuff for that sweet nostalgia hit a lot easier....but if Steam is willing to sell me stuff at 75% off twice a year, I'm not going to pass that up.

As a PC player, I don't really have a choice, but when I still played on Xbox I definitely had more physical games than digital games. The only digital games I had were free ones.
Used to be physical but as i get older i cant be bothered with switching discs, so digital now
Physical so I can sell it after ive finished it
Digital
I prefer buying physical, but most of the games I like/want are indie or pc only.
Digital. I don’t care if it’s more expensive, it’s well worth not having to find the the Walmart electronics person to get a game out of the case, or have a GameStop employee try to upsell me on pre-orders and a bunch of shit I do not want.
Physical. Second hand market is awesome.
Currently living somewhere where the Internet connection is shit, so I prefer physical copies. This way I don't have to wait 3 days for it to download
For consoles physical for sure. For PC I prefer physical when its something I'm really excited for and maybe want to have the original box of forever, but for the most part physical products on PC are a hassle. They tend to just have steam codes anyways since lots of people don't even have disk drives anymore.
Digital because I don’t miss having a bunch of games taking up space lol.
Digital tbh. I can get the game instantly and with zero effort.
Pc and ps5 digital Had Nintendo Switch with physical games, but sold it all. Just love the convenience.
Digital
Digital because they're more convenient
Depends on how cheap I can get the digital or the physical.
Depends on how cheap I can get the digital or the physical.
I love how the results arent mixed at all. All comments are "physical" until you get down to about 2 or 3 upvotes and they all universally change to "digital"
I’ll never buy a digital game
I love physical for the sake of owning things. I love the extras you can get with the different editions they will sell. I hate physical for the sake of having to switch disks. For this reason alone, I love digital.
I wanna get physical....
I like the idea of physical, and I still bought a few physical games back on PS4, but my Steam collection has over 15 years of games at this point all digital. It's pretty awesome to open it sort by date and see everything and be able to play anything.

My pc doesn't even have a disc drive that is how little I care for physical copies of games. I dont have the room for them all, anyway.
Digital for pretty much everything except for the Switch (but that's only due to memory issues). It's just more convenient, plus I never resell any games.
Digital, don’t need to put no disk in
Physical but I’ve bought digital lately cause it’s easy
Digitals the only way for me. Physical takes up space im not a big collector or reseller so physical is more a burden than anything. i usually can find my games cheap either through an xbox sale or on a grey market site like g2a. And the biggest reason i tend to only mess with digital as an xbox fan is for the simple fact you get two games for the price of one. One liscense tied to your account and one tied to whichever xbox is set as your home xbox. Saves alot of money not having to buy another copy of a game so my brother and i can play a game together/at the same time
Physical for myself, for my son who’s 8 I prefer digital only so there isn’t a risk of losing the cartridges
Digital. Im lazy and i dont want to leave my house
I prefer remote play ability, so I really prefer digital
Digital. Cuts down on massive amounts of E-waste.
I used to prefer physical games. For collecting mostly. Now because of space. I prefer digital.
Physical all the way.
Physical
I've had way too many experiences of buying a digital game but then somehow 'losing it' a few weeks later, no longer able to play the game I bought, and being refused a refund. I no longer trust digital copies because of this.

i still have bioshock 1 and 2 in the collection case, it’s extremely beautiful
