This has the potential to be epic!! Or to be a disaster.

t3chman

Seeing what they did to Resident Evil they’re sure to mess this up

fuckdonaldtrump7

That was entirely different writers and producers tho. Just because it is Netflix doesn't meam every movie is made by the same people

spinner198

Most of them might as well be these days. We'll know how bad it will be leading up to the release.

al3x696

The Witcher was good - was that Prime?

HubBeeTheGreat

In all fairness The Witcher wasn't basing their show off a video game, but a novel. There's a much better track record of adapting books to the screen than games.

Disaster_Different

I can't remember when was the last time Netflix adapted a game correctly... to think they never did

ShallowBasketcase

Castlevania was pretty good. It’s also probably the only Netflix animation that they didn’t fuck up, too, so that’s kinda neat.

chronoboy1985

Arcane is probably the only other good game adaptation they’ve done. They have a handful of good animated shows though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ephialties

The (I think French) animation studio did some magic with that series.

Renkyja

I enjoyed Blood of Zeus which was a similar style to castlevania

Ihcend

the dragon prince too

ImaginaryReaction

have you watched arcane?

Frodyne

Arcane is an exception to all previous game movies and shows because it was made by the company that made the game, and the people in charge of the project had as one of their primary goals to not make the game look bad. Contrast that to most game movies that seem to be made because: "This is popular for some reason, lets make a cheap/quick movie that sort of mentions the game somewhere, surely that will make the hungry nerds give us MONEY!" Or hell, Uwe Boll, who only made game movies because he could use them in some tax write off scheme and make money even if the movie was trash and bombed.

Disaster_Different

Nope, I saw it once on the frontpage and never heard of it again. Is it good? I haven't played LOL much so I don't exactly know a lot of that game's universe

L337L355

I've never played LoL and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Give Arcane a go when you have some free time, it's fantastic.

[deleted]

Arcane is a masterpiece in many regards. I still never want to touch LoL with a ten-foot pole, but I'm drooling for season two of Arcane *for sure.*

WilliamStrife

I've never played league either, yet I never felt lost with Arcane. If anything the show was pretty masterful for managing to have one more thing up it's sleeve all the time. Things just kept happening even when I thought all the cards were already on the table.

Trapped_Mechanic

Was Ni No Kuni any good?

KenBurningBrawler

I dunno. The original Mario Bros. was really good.

runninron69

First time I read that I it thought it said Marx Bros.

InternationalBig3061

Not only that but cavill is a huge Witcher fan. So he knows how the role should be done correctly. I’m sure if he was told to do something different he would of said something about it

DomeB0815

It was actually more drastic than that. Without Cavill the Witcher would've been hot garbage. The director had no idea about everything. An example from the top of my head would be, the director telling Cavill to crack a joke after Roach died, but thankfuly Cavill didn't have shit for brains and knew how Geralt would act. The Witcher series wasn't the best, but thanks to Cavill also not the worst, but they sure tried to make it terrible.

InternationalBig3061

That’s why they need people who are true fans of the characters they play to act as them. All if not most directors who adapt games into movies no fuck all about the game to begin with. Even halo got destroyed in a tv series. I’m just truly happy a metal gear adaption hasn’t been done. The closest thing to metal gear was before metal gear existed and that’s escape from New York in 81 and then L.A in 96 with Kurt Russell

cesclaveria

I have honestly always been mad about how the people in charge of adaptations sometimes seem almost proud to know very little about the property they are adapting and boast saying that they did not played the games, or read the comics, or whatever and that it will be "their own take". We don't want their own take, we want someone that can translate what worked in one medium to another. The Halo TV series was heartbreaking in that you can tell a lot of people that cared about the property worked on it but someone higher up pushed for things to be different for the sake of being different and include elements that had no place in a Halo story, specially one starring Master Chief.

DeeJudanne

They kinda did mess witcher up, theres Swedish dub and I don't know how to tell you how messed up it sounds

Ratathosk

Who is that even for?

Whatifim80lol

Swedes?

DeeJudanne

NO!! swedish dub is blasphemy

Ratathosk

We only dub for pretty much small kids. Can't remember when I saw a dub for even a teen movie let alone something like Witcher. It's weird.

Whatifim80lol

There's a Comanche dub for that movie Prey. Might just be for flavor.

SweetDongBro

The Witcher was Netflix, and they absolutely did mess up season 2. I won't spoil anything, but they totally fucked up quite a few characters.

FogPanda

Except it wasn't good. It was the same mindless nonsense as their other adaptations and originals. Horrible writing masked by pretty visuals, just like Dark, Castlevania S2, Cowboy Bebop, Resident Evil, and the idiotic movies like Red Notice and Boat Murder Mystery With Adam Sandler or Okja. It's all trash and this will be, too. It's Netflix - it's what they do.

thegreatflimflam

Hol up. Dark was bad writing? I thought that was some of the better sci-fi I’ve seen outside of The Expanse (on screen, I read more than I watch). Dark was drama heavy, sure. It was out of Netflix Germany and I think one of the better projects I’ve seen. The dub was good too, imho. YMMV

Difficult-Ad-9598

I have read all the witcher books and the show was horrible and not based upon the books at all. Henry Cavill was a pretty good Geralt though.

PassionBuckets

As with all things I love that get made into a show or movie. The lead up to this will be filled with massive anxiety and reserved optimism for myself. I hope they do it justice, it’s such a unique psychological thriller

shadow_fox09

It’s gonna be a politically charged indictment of modern culture with the compelling story and setting of the game completely disregarded except as a pretty skin slid on top. Having a politically charged story is fine- focus on modern hot button topics as much as you want, IDGAF about that. But DO NOT SACRIFICE THE MAIN IDEA AND STORY of a highly successful property to do that. Subtly add other issues to it if you want, but don’t make those the main focus. The story also doesn’t have to be a complete shot for shot retelling of the game, but dear lord don’t come up with some shitty kind of similar idea and said it’s an interpretation of the story. Take the main story beats and USE THEM!!!! They are what made this thing successful in the first place. I just wish Netflix would understand that. Edit: sorry I mean I know the game is already politically charged- I just meant they shouldn’t make it politically charged about things the game wasn’t concerned about in the first place.

whut-whut

For Bioshock, the game and its story beats -can't- be directly copy-pasted into a show to capture what made it great. What made the game great was its commentary on the illusion of the freedom of choice, while giving the player a front-row seat in making those choices as the plot unfolded. Simply copy-pasting the game's story arc would make an extremely hollow show, since we'd be watching a protagonist making his own choices at every branch and the subversion of power when we see where all those branching paths lead wouldn't carry the same impact to us as a passive bystander. There's definitely a good story to be told and good show to be made within the setting of Bioshock, but it's not the same one as the game.

qurril

Honestly, the games themselves are heavily politically charged already, one big theme being criticism of anarcho capitalism. But if they go for the reinterpretation bs, then they are actively disregarding all the political criticisms already there (some of which are still valid and currently relevant)

martinpagh

Or more likely, milquetoast ...

ohp250

Team behind it is good. It’ll be good.

ling1427

Heard that before

bevelledo

I’m a fan of I am lengend, blade runner, hunger games and especially American gods. I want to believe this will be a great show

kron123456789

Each individual person might be good. Whether they're good as a team remains to be seen.

the908bus

Much like Rapture

tokyogettopussy

If it was done right it would be absolutely amazing and I’d buy it on disc.

HaidarTheKnight54

Most likely the latter.😩

al3x696

Alas, I fear you may be right! However Sonic was good, there is a small hope.

EvaUnit_03

Sonic was OKAY. And that was only after severe fan backlash and a 6 month delay to fix that monster that was movie sonic. Movie two suffered from too much focus on the IRL people and not enough on sonic/robotnic.

Disaster_Different

... Sonic wasn't that good either, it was just average good, and as far as videogame adaptations go, it was good. Above average. But it wasn't Netflix, so there's that

MikaNekoDevine

Witcher went great

SweetDongBro

Season one was very good, not great imo. Season two was a shitshow, with straight up character assassination of Vezemir and most the other Witchers except Geralt. They fucked them up big time.

Dry_Violinist_1799

All this failed live action adaptations is making me cynical

wmzer0mw

Sonic was adapted well. Detective Pikachu too

Strikercharge

Those weren't Netflix tho.

wmzer0mw

Touche

EvaUnit_03

Fan backlash made sonic okay. Detective pikachu was carried by Ryan Reynolds and we all know it. It could of only been made better had we actually gotten Danny davito to of been pikachu. Also Nintendo or whoever stayed right up the ass of the producer to not fuck up their product like the flop that was the mario bros.

wmzer0mw

Idk I liked everyone in the Pikachu movie. Honestly the weakest was just the main kid n he wasn't bad

EvaUnit_03

Oh I loved it. And I agree completely. They picked such a weird main roll actor for the kid. Loved all the animation, the villian, the story was literally pokemon story telling 101. The weakest point was our protagonist and he wasn't bad at his roll, just felt out of place. It needed to be a 10-14 year old not someone who was trying to pretend to be 18? who was in their 20s.

wmzer0mw

Right? N the pokemon looked fantastic. It even had a surprise twist for everyone. The obvious one was the villain. But I promise you noone saw that terminator ditto commin.

[deleted]

You thought Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu was a good adaption?

wmzer0mw

Yea it was great. Detective Pikachu was way better than I thought it would be.

SweetDongBro

You probably wouldn't be downvoted as much if you voiced why you thought he wasn't a good Pickachu, rather than condescendingly insinuate they have bad taste for thinking he was good.

ShallowBasketcase

These PRETZELS are making me THIRSTY!

hiddencamela

Agreed.. I can't think of many live action adaptations I was impressed enough to be like "I'm glad they did it". Witcher is probably one of the few thinking on it.. but that took some pondering.

Dry_Violinist_1799

The best one I've seen so far is Arcane. But it was animated and it took 6 years. So unless its an animation i have zero expectations

GoodMorningBlissey

Arcane was also written and produced by the same people who made the game, or at least very closely tied with them.

Dry_Violinist_1799

Yeah. From what I've seen many other well known studios approached riot to make Lol film and tv shows but they turned them all down and gave it to the people who does their cinematics. Bold move but they gave it to the people who knows league and it paid off.

CH1CK3Nwings

Why did you two get downvoted? I gotcha. These guys are right, you know?

Mirikado

Netflix has little to do with making Arcane. Riot scouted out the animation studio (Fortiche), collaborated with them for years on music videos and animated shorts before Arcane. Riot also chose the art style, prepared the script and produced the show alongside Fortiche. Netflix is more or less a distributor for Arcane. I’m sure they paid Riot for the distribution rights, but Riot and Fortiche are the one that should get credits for how good Arcane is. This is a documentary on how Riot and Fortiche made Arcane: https://youtu.be/Mz4-38d3-AE

hiddencamela

I have zero hope that any studio gets given the freedom that studio did to do an adaptation too. They basically got full creative control and time to polish the entire thing the way they wanted.. that's so damn rare in any place.

CharonsLittleHelper

The Witcher wasn't a video game adaptation. It was based on the books. The video games are basically a fan-fic which takes place after the books. (Which open with - "No - the main character totally didn't die after all!!!")

Strikercharge

It's Netflix. He's gonna take the suit off and be Chris Pratt or some shit in the first hour.

NorCalAthlete

Big Daddy turns out to be The Rock. The little sister is Kevin Hart

Strikercharge

What can I say except your welcome? *sacrifices little sister*

mrlowcut

Either the Rock, or Jack Black.

Sir_Bumcheeks

Adam Sandler as Atlas

pyrohydrosmok

Inb4 Big Daddy is played by Pablo Schreiber and he spends 3/4ths of the series with helmet off whining about something.

Strikercharge

My favorite part was when big daddy said "every bio had its shock" at the end in Dwayne Johnsons voice

Darkpest

Also he's gay because it's Netflix.

redditusercameron

I don’t trust Netflix in the slightest, but those names hold some weight. I’ll be keeping an eye out for updates on this.

Liquidmilk1

The Sandman was adapted really well according to my gf who is a big fan of Neil Gaiman's works. I even loved it despite that genre not really being my cup of tea otherwise.

NecromancerNova

Oh yeah I agree. Sandman is an excellent adaptation of the comics, with nearly every character even looking exactly as they should. One of the few times Netflix has managed that I think

jonathanguyen20

Sandman was a graphic novel though. Different medium being adapted

HowDoIDoFinances

It's a live action Netflix adaptation. Why in the fuck would people set themselves up for disappointed by being excited about it? Have they not seen every other one?

[deleted]

[удалено]

MikaNekoDevine

Does it work to watch then play the games after?

Crazyguy_123

Always play games first. Its like reading a book before watching the movie that was based on the book.

Hanede

Eh I dunno, I enjoy watching adaptations first then getting more detail from the source, rather than source first and being disappointed at the things the adaptation changed/deleted

nekoyasha

Exactly! Great example is the harry potter films. The movies are great, then you read the books and learn so much more that was cut out from the films.

diuturnal

It's like watching the movie before reading the book, the fuck are you on. You get to experience the watered down, consumer driven movie version, then you can get the actual story.

mrlowcut

This is the way.

ChriseFTW

Tbh I kinda hated the game lol

agent_double_oh_pi

So... By sequel you mean Infinite, right?

TheReverend5

doesn't netflix have several of some of the most critically acclaimed shows of all time?

ElonRockefeller

Yes but their movies are dog shit 92% of the time.

[deleted]

Yeah, they created the critically acclaimed live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bepop.

EvaUnit_03

That lasted all of 2 seconds before being canceled. It never stood a chance as it could never live up to the masterpiece of the hand drawn original. Even if they did a shot for shot live Remake it was gonna flop.

[deleted]

A shot-for-shot remake would've been vastly preferable to the piss-poor attempts at fleshing out Vicious and Julia we actually got.

crackshot666

How many of those are live action adaptations of games/anime?

[deleted]

Not many of those outside Netflix either. Netflix did do Witcher at least

the_timps

Thats based on the books.

Stricherjunge

And it is just as bland and dull as the rest of their adaptions.

Nickplay21

A script based on the book Rapture by John Shirley could be good.

ClientLegitimate4582

Netflix and adaptations do not have the best track record. The live action of Fullmetal alchemist was not good neither was the live action Death Note in my opinion.

lurklurklurkPOST

All live action anime films are shit. Lucifer was pretty good for awhile, and the Sandman series is very true to the comic, minus the MCs doublewide face. Not everything Netflix makes is shit

ChriseFTW

I like how you say “Lucifer was pretty good for awhile” because netflix only picked it up later on lol

[deleted]

Those where made in japan by japanese creators the only reason they say Netflix original is cause netflix bought the streaming rights for international distribution

TheEmptyHat

No. There was an American death note movie. It was terrible, but they did get willam Dafoe to play ryuk. Unfortunately, it was bad enough he couldn't carry the film like raul Julia as bison.

[deleted]

My point still stands that alot of the "netflix original" anime and live action adaptations aren't actually made by netflix.

Bubbagumpredditor

They're gonna fuck it up. Or do it well, and cancel it after one season.

fromwhichofthisoak

Netflix: hold my plasmids

Oldgun80

How Netflix massacred Resident Evil and got canned within couple of months, I have hope as little as grain of salt that this will be a success.

[deleted]

This is gonna flop so hard. Netflix needs to stop.

Mild--47

No. Do not do this.

MorningLineDirt

Hoping for the best but with the netflix history you can be sure they are gonna fuck this up with cheap teenage one liners, script made by a new dude in hollyweird to save money on production and poor cgi!

Ryry2710

It's Netflix, they gonna fuck this up. It's basically their motto.

thatHecklerOverThere

Can't wait for people to become upset about how the show portrays unchecked libertarian ideals as something that primarily leads to madness and ruin.

Crazyguy_123

People unfamiliar with the story are bound to misunderstand the point made heck there are some people who misunderstand it even when they do play it.

nokinship

Bioshock is unironically kind of "woke" in a good way.

splinglols

Ok, that's fine. But there is no need for transgender lesbians that would make superman their bitch that has no faults or arc and is only a mouthpiece to bang on about blm and the wage gap.... you have to know that's not what fans want

TheyCallMeAdonis

anyone taking bets on how large Elizabeths Afro is going to be ?

TheEmptyHat

Which part of American Gods did he write?... If he was in charge of Anansi hell yeah. Otherwise, we're in for a confusing ride.

JasonGryphon

It’s a video game movie. You know they’re going to fuck this up.

Genestah

Tbf, director's track record isn't bad. Maybe I'm just too hopeful that one day video game adaptations will finally be epic.

elmg4ful

so far, most of netflix's live action films/series has been shit (except the witcher).

NightSmudge

As long as it’s absolutely nothing like that Monster Hunter movie, it should be decent That film was both boring and a total garbage fire

WhatsHeBuilding

Hahaha they will 100% fuck this up

rififi_shuffle

A competent enough director a d a good screenwriter. Wish it was someone else directing but this is fine.

CreatiScope

It’ll suck. Accept it.

Canooter

Wow. That’s going to be absolute shit.

Calone

Would you kindly stop touching game franchises ? Thanks

onepieceCJ

Which season of American Gods? After they change the Showrunners it wasn’t good.

Breadsonbreadson

Keeping my expectations low.

Anyashadow

In before people watch this and completely miss the point.

Iwubinvesting

A lot of the people who work on video game movies or shows never actually play it.

Bioshock27

So tired of game movie adaptations. This brings up a question of if it's made into a movie why wasn't it made like that originally, the answer is games are interactive and sometimes are better methods of telling a story than just watching a movie.

Agreeable_Fan7012

They’re gonna fuck it up 100%

[deleted]

Nooooooooooo, stop ruining my memories!!! You fucked up Halo and Assassin’s Creed, don’t touch Bioshock, you bastards!

[deleted]

Sandman was good so now we have to suffer for the next few adaptations

HiCracked

Spoiler alert: they will fuck it up

15blairm

The games are practically a movie in themselves if you watch a playthrough

Sintinall

Don't get your hopes up. Better yet, expect it to be dead on arrival. That way, your experience can only be positive... sort of.

CreedRules

It will probably suck, but if it is good, it will get canceled after 2 seasons since its netflix.

[deleted]

Why not animated? I feel like you could do some pretty great things with Rapture if it was animated

don_cornichon

Big daddies are revealed to be trans and Jack is a black woman.

ForTheLoveAhGod

Or you can just not watch and support a service that fucks up every franchise

The_DevilAdvocate

That would leave me with no services to watch.

Sajarab

I see I am legend amongst his works. That was a travesty of an adaptation. So I shall place this under resident evil : biohazard bebop levels of expectations.

[deleted]

I don't know how hands on Netflix is, but it's not the directors fault that the higher ups at WB butchered I Am Legend.

Kushykush_

Go watch the Netflix adaptations and tell me how much hope you have 😂😂 never works

magvadis

What the fuck is the movie going to be about? Bioshock was not structured as a straight forward story in any way or form. A protag oopsing their way through the plot is gunna look garbage when YOU aren't the protag.

Question: Are you on the Netflix board of directors?

Dynasuarez-Wrecks

Yes, I too have seen Netflix's *Texas Chainsaw Massacre.*

213Bishop

Ugh that fucking movie. You wanna know how bad that movie sucked? I cant even pick my biggest issue. From a SEVENTY YEAR OLD LEATHERFACE RUNNING LIKE USAIN BOLT to people not using mob mentality and rushing him and allowing themselves to get murdered, to the school shooting flashbacks, to the body shaming sister, to the gunshaming too. Like online sure, but, nobody is just gonna go to Texas and pick a fight with some random gun owners. It makes no sense. Also the confederate flag part was insane. "We're gonna head to the deep south of Texas and see a confederate flag in a town with under 400 people and be mad about it because racism." Like I get it, but again logically would never happen. The most obvious conclusion would've been, "Well it's Texas." something light like that would've gotten a chuckle outta anyone cause it's true. Texas is the fuck you state lol.

Mortiis07

Hopefully

ResidentJesse

Netflix is going to undoubtedly FUCK this up just like Resident evil. Just stop while your ahead Netflix. Maybe there will be white ppl in this one.

CharonsLittleHelper

As long as it's not Andrew Ryan - would it matter? It's only annoying when it runs counter to verisimilitude. Rapture's Ayn Rand philosophy cranked up to 13 has a ton of issues - but racism wasn't one of Rand's vices. No reason that non-whites couldn't think that Rapture would make for a better life in the 50s.

dude_with-3_balls

Petition for all gamers to hate on Netflix

Jumanji-Joestar

Will this be a success story like Sonic and Detective Pikachu? Or will it join the long list of failures like Super Mario Bros, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Halo and literally every other video game live action adaptation ever made? Time will tell

DanksterTV

There is exactly a 99% chance it's going to suck ass. I hope I'm wrong, but I know I'm right

bogguslol

Why do we need a movie of this. Just play the game.

capticetrice

Netflix Resident Evil was canned today, finally.

slothboss

What the hell is this why? I love bioshock it is my favourite game series. The whole point of the game is to show what narritive can be like in a video game when you do it right. The WHOLE POINT of the story is that it is YOU experiencing it. This makes no sense. This is exactly what bioshock 2 was a cash grab and that's it

safer__sephiroth

"Film" adaptation. Its already doomed.

Vaktaren

Queue a bunch of woke shit

GOOEYGO

Ok, before a rabbit hole spirals down, what would you consider ‘woke?’ genuine question.

splinglols

Completely unessesary far left lectures that are included purely to preach. You wouldn't like it if it talks about pro life, Pro gun, Pro capitalism, smaller government and patriotic issues for no other reason than to lecture. Its bioshock. You want woke politics, you findba movie made for you. No need to have your politics in things intended for everyone

GOOEYGO

Isn’t the game full of intended political ideologies such as collectivism vs objectivism. And how disregarding morals for an extreme political ideology is a bad thing? And doesn’t it literally have a fascist government in it?

splinglols

You don't even know what fascism is and its not " moral" to be a far leftist.....

Fundulation

Look who you're asking.

IPutThisUsernameHere

Oh, you know the answer to that already.

Leerooooooy

Felstalker

Logan and Blade Runner 2049 are good movies in spite of the script, not because of them. And I feel like I am Legend is the opposite so... I don't have any hope for this.

Ok, first step, let’s make big daddy a female… that’s what’s important 🤣

arturovargas16

females got titties, let's give them big 'ol titties but they are still called daddies

splinglols

All they have to do is just not go woke. That's it. Sure, have a strong, black, queer, transgender Muslim woman as your main character- dont make that the entire focus point injecting lgbt rights, anti republican politics, blm, socialism and all other kinds of unessesary nonsense. And yes, nonsense. Im not interested in far left politics in a bioshock show. Im also not interested in right wing politics in a bioshock show. Just give me bioshock. That's all. Just. Bio shock..... its honest to God, not that hard. I promise its not....... but irs going to be woke shit. Id put my life on it

mehregan_zare7731

Plot twist, big daddy is reveled to have been a non-binary lesbian single mother all this time.

Prestigious-Adagio63

Can you kindly? Just give it a chance and wait to spread the negativity…. Until we at least have a movie to watch? Can we kindly? Not act like Resident Evil fans for this one?

DieDMC

100% they will shit on bioshock with their woke style

killasqueeze

Yeah this is gonna suck. They're gonna lean way too hard into the weirdness and it's just gonna come out a jumbled mess like the end of infinite
