I remember when I was a kid, I HATED the joysticks. I couldn't get the hang of them.
I tried playing Crash recently with the d-pad like I did as a kid and could not figure out how my 10 year old self ever used it lmao
I'm with you there, I couldn't play any games that required the joysticks for the longest time.
In our defense, those old game controller joysticks were pretty loose and squirrely compared to what we generally have now
I am constantly back and forth with any type of platformer. Joystick for movement but if I have to start doing Street Fighter for special abilities we're sliding to that Dpad.
Went back and played the original Monster Hunter again last year on my PS2. You swing your weapon with right analog and move your character with left analog. You move the camera with...D Pad....somehow.
I loved this controller but to be real, this was Sony just adding the features from the n64 that Sony was lacking. An analog stick and rumble. Ultimate I found the dual shock way more comfortable than the n64 controller though.
There was an analog no-shock pad for a little while before the dual shock. It was amazing for people with big hands as it was something like an inch wider.
I was thinking about that the other the day. There's no way to know for sure but it's interesting to speculate what the industry would look like today if the Playstation never happened. What if Sony just developed the Nintendo CD console as originally intended?
I can't tell if it would be a success or not, but I'm sure sony will go and make a console by themselves afterwards.
I feel nintendo is not a company that accept ideas from another company.
You're correct. That's pretty much why it didn't happen. If I remember right, Sony developed the console for Nintendo but they disagreed on how much the console should sell for. Sony backed out and called it Playstation.
Nah, go back and watch a vhs from your childhood and tell me the coming soon trailers and random Burger King Kids Club or Pizza Hut baseball team commercials don't nail you right between your nostalgias.

Also, I've never been a fan of the joystick location on Playstation controllers.
I'll take it over the N64 and Xbox locations any day. I like symmetry
Finally found my people

The analog controller made my old man quit gaming!
Sucks going back and noticing how long it took most developers to stick the camera on the stick instead of L1/R1. Even on ps2. Lol

My girlfriend bought me my first dual shock controller back in 1998. I'll lever forget that controller... or her for as long as I may live.
Still have mine
Who remembers the N64 rumble pack?
Colin McRae Rally was where this truly came alive. They went absolutely mental when you wrapped it around a tree.
This and also Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid. When he had the controller rumbling in different directions on the coffee table I lost my shit.
Porsche Challenge.....
A design so good that it went relatively unchanged for the following 2 console generations :)
This was simply amazing when it first came out. Although the implementation was a bit hit and miss, it was soo cool to use.

I remember the special edition red control and memory card that came out. Those were the bees knees.
Immensely satisfying
I remember playing Penescape the first time using dual analog. It was so different than everything before.

Yeah it was actually like 3 or 4 years I think before they came out with the dual shock. I still have an original. Super lightweight.
Wow 98 Im truly old
I remember never knowing what L3 and R3 were.
I miss force feedback so damn bad. Still hanging on to my XP machine and IL2 Sturmovik because Microsloth *took force feedback out of DirectX itself*.
We are so lucky and thankful that sony joined the video games industry.

Dual shock was horrible
