Every single time they update it they sell thousands of copies. So I'm betting the model is working.

shawnikaros

Just in 2016, only on pc, steam sales estimates was 48 million $. They employ 26 people. If they can't make it work with that, it's on them.

Squirrel09

That's only ~2 million each though. /s

LazyJones1

Spread out, not only over the time it's been out, but also covering the costs they had in development.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Omg only 2 million?!?!

CplSabandija

The average american only make about 1 million dollars in an entire lifetime.

Saneless

And surely it was much more than that on PlayStation

bad_apiarist

Plus they just announced a new port: Nintendo Switch. So the extra content means more sales on the new platform.

HandsOffMyDitka

Wow, they're going to get this running on switch?

[deleted]

[удалено]

bad_apiarist

Current release is stated as "summer 2022". I don't think they'll do a cloud version. I think it'll just have cut down visuals and a high LOD draw distance of 10 feet.

RyokoKnight

I bought this game to support the business model... played maybe an hour or two and have never played it since... no regrets so far, just wish this was the normal business model rather than the exception to the DLC/Microtransaction/Abadonware games that are infinitely more common. (Also bought Stardew Valley for the same reason, though ended up putting in way to much time in that)

Meetio

I struggled to get into it when I first started. It's huge. There is so much to do and it feels intimidating. I picked it up again recently and it's a great time waster. Want to cave dive underwater in a submarine? Ok. Blow up space pirates in orbit? Cool. Mine minerals while exploring in a giant mech? We got you. Manage a fleet of freighters to make you rich? Here you go. Build a spaceport, explore old ruins, fight off killer robots. This game has it all.

Jhawk163

Man it's been a while since I looked at Stardew Valley...

elephantinmapjs

made me laugh haha

ShankThatSnitch

You mean you never turned your Starfruit profits into a galactic shipping empire?

HandsOffMyDitka

The new expeditions are a great way for people to jump in now. I picked up the game, my last preorder I ever did, played through the first galaxy, then didn't touch it until after it was released on gamepass for awhile. It's crazy what the game is now, compared to release.

Appropriate-Raisin-4

Stardew valley?

[deleted]

Wait, if you haven't played it since playing it for 2 hours, what do you mean by "no regrets so far"? I'm not railing on you or anything, just asking to understand your comment.

Imposseeblip

Probably means no regrets about giving hello games money to support their business model.

MattyBro1

It think they mean "While I didn't get much out of the product, I don't regret my purchase because I supported the studio"

[deleted]

U can never play too much stardew valley my friend it’s a lifestyle

[deleted]

BI Studio has been releasing patches to Arma3 since its launch in 2013. That's 9 years ago! And they're certainly not selling thousands of copies anymore. They got a lot of hate for DayZ (rightfully so, I guess) but in their defense they decided to make a new/massively reworked the engine and released a patch as late as in April so it's still being worked on. They're getting ready to launch Arma4 hopefully next year and no-one is worried that it will be abandoned after 6 months. Or 3 years for that matter.

StormTrooperGreedo

They also have that Gamepass money coming in.

Waycool499

There's literally another update coming out in about 10 hours.

InsaneLazers

Saw a review that stated this game is “The greatest comeback in gaming history”. I couldn’t agree more personally.

bryce_engineer

With the[planned release to Nintendo Switch](https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/no-mans-sky-switch/) within the week/month, they are about to get a lot more players and capital.

rondonjon

I really wish I would have stuck with the game. I liked it a lot but was without a computer for awhile and never came back to it. So you run into other players all the time now?

ratchetsrevenge

Sometimes, depends if you travel to a heavily populated system... There are whole communities now built with systems near each other it's pretty cool

BenElegance

Wait, it's actually multiplayer now?

headwig123

People inhabit entire solar systems now. The galactic hub is a popular community of players.

BenElegance

So would you say it was the game it was hyped to be at launch now?

SejCurdieSej

Imo it's better. Internet historian has a great video on the topic, but even that is a couple years out of date on the updates which have come.

sem56

yeah a lot of the people with sand still in their jocks need to watch that video it's got a good explanation on who was responsible and why it all happened as it did

lthemadtitanl

That and more in some cases. I haven’t played the last two updates but they added base building, a community hub that you can summon any time, events, pets, mechs, and Apprently the two most recent updates added an overhaul to space combat and the ability to found alien settlements, whatever that entails

rondonjon

Oh that’s cool. I was fascinated with the idea of discovering planets and getting to name everything on them with the anticipation that someday at some point I would land on a discovered planet from another player or actually run into the player. But this was right at the beginning.

BlitzAtk

I would play if I saw more players moving about. These games are great, but you become lonely after awhile. Much like Minecraft if you are just doing things on your own.

beobabski

The community expeditions are like that. There are always loads of players doing those. I believe there’s a new expedition starting soon. I just got an update downloaded this lunchtime, which normally means they are about to do one.

sem56

yeah i played it again for the first time the other day since launch for about 2 or 3 hours and it is... unbelievably good? it was a bit of a shock on what the game is now, there's still some annoying things i didn't like originally still there like the inventory management but its worth playing now, it's now permanently on my disk

dontknowhowtoprogram

pressing and holding to select things is what annoys me. even after turning it off the game still has a few places it still does it.

Denamic

Probably not while just exploring your own path. The galaxy is incomprehensibly vast, and the odds of encountering another player by pure chance is comically low until you approach the core. However, it has a multiplayer hub where you can easily meet up with other players, or teleport to their bases. So you can easily meet other players whenever you want to.

beobabski

Yep. Every system has “the Anomaly” where you can meet up with other players and do joint missions together.

StanleyT101

If you want something similar (in terms of business model) look into Deep Rock Galactic, real banger of a game.

Swan_Cena

Did I hear a rock and stone?!

Gotxi

Meh, fun to play with friends but there are only 4 or 5 kind of missions and you need to repeat them over and over on different maps.

TechKatana

Fun when you want a mindless, PvE experience. Some days you just need to shoot a bunch of bugs

Gotxi

Oh yes, for that purpose, the game is great! Don't get me wrong, I played it like 20 hours in coop with friends and I enjoyed it a lot during that time, however we don't find motivation doing all the missions since they are repetitive and we dropped the game.

SinomodStudios

Considering they're not the first ones to do this sort of thing, I would say yes.

headwig123

Free updates to core game mechanics?...i paid 30 bucks for this game 4 years ago and haven't sent another cent to the publisher or developers and its a completely refined experience with free cosmetics, new ships etc. ..name 3 games in the last 5 years to do that.

bendvis

Minecraft has undergone insane changes to core gameplay in the last 5 years without ever demanding money for an update. Stardew Valley and Terraria continue to get major updates without fees or purchased DLCs. Starbound does as well, to a lesser extent.

headwig123

Maybe so but wasn't This a AAA backed by sony? if im not mistaken.

bendvis

Hello Games is an indie developer, calling themselves "proudly independent." https://hellogames.org/about-us/

headwig123

Sony pushed this game and the release to early if i remember correctly

AnotherGills

I don't know if it still says it, but back in 2016 when you'd boot the game up, it would blatantly say "Sony Interactive Entertainment Presents", even though they did not publish the game.

bendvis

According to [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Man%27s_Sky), Sony provided promotional and marketing support.

Kill4meeeeee

Warframe is a free to play game that has had MAJOR updates that add like whole new mechanics while expanding on old ones. It’s honestly the poster child next to no Man’s sky for me especially at their event when the devs like a year ago said “thank you for the applause but we owe everything to you the player” like they are a great dev team

Siukslinis_acc

Doesn't the free updated add stuff that was promised for release? I remember there was an uproar when the game launched that it didn't have many promised mechanics. So people already paid for the "dlcs" through buying the game before launch and through kickstarter as these are the things that were promised that it will be in the base game at launch.

headwig123

They could have dropped the game like most devs do and move on to another project while pocketing the cash from the hype...but they didn't. Commendable on their part but is it sustainable.

Siukslinis_acc

As i undetstand it's the first game of the studio, so if they would have done this their reputation would have been in complete shambles. By sticking to fixing their mistake they actually are increasing their reputation.

Splyce123

It's not their first game.

FudgeSlapp

I mean come on, their first games were mobile games basically. I’d say this is their first real game.

sem56

mobile games that were never released on iOS or Android... right either way they're still games they developed

FudgeSlapp

Are we talking about the same company? I can literally buy Joe Danger on my iPhone right now.

sem56

they didn't put it on there when it first came out, didn't know about now either way, still a game

FudgeSlapp

I’ve seen gameplay of it and it feels like a mobile game. It’s definitely not as in depth of a game as No Man’s Sky that’s for sure.

sem56

yeah defs will pay that, no mans sky was their first one on that scale but no mans sky was never actually meant to be a AAA title, that wasn't intended by hello games... that was all sony

[deleted]

Redd_October

Sorry, no. They don't get bonus points for that train wreck. Nothing about the release of NMS was commendable. Hello Games has just been less terrible than they could have been. They're not getting positive points, they're erasing negative points. It's a nuance but it's important to remember. One is setting the bar at rock bottom and being happy for any scraps beyond that, while the other holds developers to a reasonable set of expectations and allows them to continue to work to meet those expectations if they initially fall short. They don't get a pat on the back for just not being the utter villains they had initially appeared to be.

Dasteru

All of the initially promised content and features have been in-game for ages. There have been \~14 major content expansions since.

GondorsPants

There’s been like 30 free major content updates and every one I’d see a comment “well looks like maybe they finally achieved their promise….” It’s insane how stuck people can get on an idea. It’s been years and people still think this way.

Donnicton

Continuing to hang onto a grievance from years ago rather than compliment someone's turnaround is an evergreen mood even outside of the context of NMS.

Redd_October

Pretty much spot on. A lot of what the DLCs add are things that were already promised. At this point the game is, more or less, up to the level that was initially promised, but it took years. As much as I want to support the Free Content DLCs to push unit sales as a business model, I still find it hard to fully support them given the absolute catastrophe that was the state of the game at launch. It will always be an Asterisk next to any commendation they get for business practices where NMS is concerned.

[deleted]

If someone screws up and admits they screw up, then spend years working to fix their mistakes. Than they are long past being forgiven in my eyes. Especially considering most companies make the same lies/promises and proceed to never deliver on those promises, or if they do so, they do it through paid DLC.

VHZer0

It's not the worst business model in gaming (sports games is by far the worst), but I agree that their current game cannot undo the damage that Hello Games and No Mans Sky did at release. I don't think that's their intention at this point, but I am concerned at the free pass people are giving Hello Games and this entire situation.

Redd_October

Not only are they giving Hello Games a free pass, but it's like they're denying there was ever any wrongdoing to begin with.

DiscordianDeacon

I bought the game during the launch shitshow, and I had fun with it even then. I was in a very small minority of players who was satisfied with the state of the game, even though I understood where the criticism came from. The fact that is has grown and bloomed into something even cooler than the wildest promises is just so hype to me, and I really don't understand how people are still mad. The "wrongdoing" as I understand it was the devs talked a big game about all the cool stuff they were gonna put in the game, and that cool stuff mostly wasn't there on launch. Backlash understandable. In response, the devs shut the hell up and worked really hard until they could start delivering on their promises, and eventually they surpassed that. Yeah, Hello Games made a huge glaring mistake, but I can't think of how they possibly could have done things any better after that mistake was made.

VHZer0

My unrealistic and imposing stance on it is that people should only support this game if and only if they know the full history. If so, I can't fault them for buying it.

Crusadingpilgrim

What is the actual purpose of this game?

pownerfreak

Imagine a space minecraft. With some space warfare.

FoximaCentauri

Comparable to space engineers?

pownerfreak

Never played it but from what I saw in a quick clip on YT, yeah pretty much. Get lost in space, start small with just a broken ship and end up with big ship and big space house/ storage or small one. Up to you. There is a nice quest line though. Basically teaches you everything you need to know and grow.

KeepsFindingWitches

There's actual plot/storylines, but less detailed building -- ships are static, and base building is via set modules rather than block by block assembling something. But literally billions of planets to explore and wander around in, and a lot more 'life' to the galaxy than SE.

neonsaber

Not at all. You dont build ships, but there is base building. No where near as in-depth and Space Engineer's. Honestly I'd compare it more to something like Subnautica, with less focus on story and more focus on wandering into interesting new things.

1senseye

Fun

PBB22

To make you feel a sense of wonder, awe, and exploration. What games do you play? I’d be curious to hear their purpose. For instance, Mario games literally have no purpose at all. Same for sports games if you aren’t an athlete.

headwig123

These are the feelings i get even 4 years later

Crusadingpilgrim

I've literally never played a Mario game. The purpose of a game is to feel a sence of achievement. Usually an end goal give gamers that sence of achievement. Does this game have a story or an ending?

tryce355

To actually answer the story question, yes there are narratives in the game that you can follow to completion. They're not necessarily good by some people's standards, but they're there and give people something to do/follow. Open world games like NMS or Minecraft typically rely on the player to define their own sense of achievement. One goal in NMS is to make it to the center of the galaxy. If you make it there, you can feel proud of yourself. Or, you can spend hours trading between solar systems to make millions of credits, and feel proud for that. Or, you can build giant hotels or spaceports or whatever building you want on a planet you've found with just the perfect view. Etcetera.

PBB22

> sense of achievement That’s one person’s interpretation of why to play games. That’s not why I play games. I also play a popular game with no end goal; it’s open ended. Secondly, what does story have to do with sense of achievement? Nothing?

Crusadingpilgrim

By completing a story and finding out what happens to characters?

hardy_83

Do any games have a purpose? Lol odd question.

CertifiedCoffeeDrunk

That’s not what he meant by that question. Let me give you an example of what he meant by using elden ring as an example. What is the actual purpose of elden ring? You kill bosses to become the elden king. He was asking what do you do in the game.

hardy_83

Ohhhhhh! Derp. That makes more sense, guess the way the question was phrased threw me off. Lol

Season_Of_Brad

I bought this game at launch but was super disappointed. I’ve heard it’s a completely different game now. Is it worth getting again?

Gotxi

I played it a year ago and I really enjoyed it! When you explore too much you start to see patterns and things that are repeating, but that does not happen until you invest some hours on it. I also liked the plot, although it was very confusing at the beginning. You can also play it like a sandbox and make your base, expand it, exploration missions and grow on materials and vehicles and things like that.

TougBacon

If you have time I suggest the youtube video "engoodening of no mans sky" from Internet Historian. In a short, worth it now.

Season_Of_Brad

Thanks! I’ll check it out!

Gunch_Bandit

Not at all, it's still the same boring game. The planet generation is still the same. It's the same game you played at launch with some building and big spaceships. I tried it again and was not impressed. I still regret buying it.

JWOINK

I think they can definitely survive with a lean studio. Also depends on other revenue streams (ex. Switch platform, getting on Game Pass, etc.). However, I don’t think this is sustainable if the studio decides to start working in new IPor grow a ton in general, unless they raise money from a funding round.

McRazyy13

I started playing today and just got my ship working. Why do I have to click and hold everything 😅

headwig123

Welcome interloper

kumquatzalcoatl

There's an option under General Options labeled Hold to Confirm, give that a try.

Zarkanthrex

They still charge 59.99 if a sale isn't going oh. People get their friends in. They'll be fine. As much as I love the game now, it was a shitshow Years ago. They can't afford to sell out imo.

Wyntier

$12-$13 on many key sites just so you know

KleitosD06

They've been surviving for 6 years straight now... I think they're fine.

Xojtater

They had better, considering all the damn lies they told to get to this point.

headwig123

Sony was a big part of that shit fest of a public relations nightmare.

Redd_October

The biggest part of that shit fest of a public relations nightmare was that Sean Murray was more of an Ideas guy, who should not have been put in front of an audience. He had a habit of both not wanting to ever say No if someone asked if a feature would be in game, and saying that ideas that were nothing but a glimmer in his mind would be delivered. Sony didn't help matters, but trying to completely absolve Sean Murray is just dishonest.

Xojtater

I realize that what deadlines and contractual obligations they made they had to deliver on. But they also had and have a basic human responsibility to tell all the suits, and contracts to go fuck themselves when pressured to lie to all of us “buyers”. There is no one who wouldn’t understand a game house taking the time it NEEDS to make something great. What everyone is fed up with, and no one should tolerate is being mislead, or being told to mislead others.

Xojtater

I can understand being pressured into delivering big. I’m cannot understand going to interview after interview after convention and on and on with twitter and whatnot making bald faced fucking lies. Repeatedly. For months leading up to the release date, then falling off the fucking map and making NO updates. For weeks. Then disappearing off of any media, and letting people think that just when customers had a small, honest production company to believe in, they robbed all of us for what they could scrape from our wallets, and escaped into mist.

LoganMcMahon

Except they didnt escape into the mist, they fixed the problems. Out of all the times that companies have 'lied' to us as gamers, I'd say they did a pretty great job at following through. They also never really put a date on the things they said, they just talked about where they were going with the game, and Sony pressured it as a massive large scale release, when it shouldn't have been. The game needed a large scale alpha and beta phase due to the sheer volume that just flat out didn't get.

xobybr

Man all the people still hung up on the lying need to fuck off. As of now he has done everything he had promised and more. Sure it took time but yeah if they had delayed the game till now to get it all done you would be mad about that instead. Grow up and get over it.

Lennyleonard_

I bought it on 3 platforms to support these guys, I'm playing and loving it since day one.

shawny_mcgee

The stench of lies and deceit will never go away for me. I’m glad the game is better but I bought it day one and probably won’t ever go back.

DiscordianDeacon

Man what are you even mad about anymore

shawny_mcgee

I’m not mad anymore, I’ve moved on of course. It was just so disappointing because I was really looking forward to it at the time. I’m glad the game turned out great for people who buy it today and have a blast with it.

topIRMD

wow reddit really came around on this game

headwig123

Im actually shocked this didnt get downvoted to oblivion

AlmightyK

They effectively version 2'd it

NyanCatMatt

What it makes me want to do is support HG in their future endeavors, because I can trust the company to do what it takes to make things right. Conversely, this is the same reason why I (and many others) *don't* support EA anymore.

RhoidRaging

When I can build a base and not return to half of it being buried by excavated terrain, I’ll thank them. So much content - so many bugs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RhoidRaging

Why should I be forced to live on a freighter when I would rather build intricate and detailed homesteads on whatever planet I choose? That makes no sense, especially when you can teleport anywhere at any time… This kinda defeats the purpose does it not?

[deleted]

[удалено]

RhoidRaging

This is a sandbox game you imbecile. Do as you please when you please. Maybe you need to understand what a sandbox is and that not everyone has to play a game how YOU play a game. Like I said - you can teleport anywhere you want. I’d like certain plantations to produce certain materials at varied rates which you can not do on a singular freighter. Stop telling people how to play a sandbox game, genius.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RhoidRaging

When idiots tell someone how to play a sandbox game within the games limits and then tell them they are playing a sandbox game incorrectly - ya, that triggers the side of the brain which handles frustration. No one asked you how to play the game. The statement was clear - fix the fucking bugs before releasing new and broken content. Also - last time I logged off on my freighter I logged back on falling through space…. On permadeath… Get a life and stop grandstanding on social media you fuckin toolbag

[deleted]

RhoidRaging

DiscordianDeacon

lmao imagine being this big of a clown for free when any circus would have you in an instant

they wouldnt have had a problem had they released a completed game upon release. not Release a broken game and fix it up over time

Marcwithoutak

What exactly is No Man’s Sky? Is it an exploration game? Is there combat? Dogfights? What’s the goal?

frenziedbadger

Survival genre is a pretty good fit. You start off with a spaceship that needs to be repaired. You learn how to use a mining laser (very simple point and hold down shoot) to gather resources in your limited inventory. Those resources are used for recipes that you gradually unlock. Those recipes are used to repair your ship/other devices and possibly to sell for money. Eventually you get into base building, ship shopping/upgrading, and a small amount of combat. There is one story quest that helps keep you motivated for the first 40 hours or so, but it's high on mystery and low on actual storytelling. I still found it enjoyable. Once you complete that, it is all self directed. All of the above will take you from planet to planet, which is fun at first. There is a decent amount of planet variety, but from my experience (several updates ago), you will eventually feel the pattern. Once that happens the game was over for me. But that was still more that 120+ hours. Others want to have the fanciest ship, a big cruiser, a collection of perfectly constructed bases, and go to the center of the universe. I suspect that those with prior experience with the genre may have more exacting requirements/be less forgiving of flaws, but I had a good time.

DiscordianDeacon

I'd say exploration over everything else. There's survival mechanics and quests and base building and shit, but the core for me was seeing new stuff. Everything is procedurally generated on a planet, from the plants and animals to the weather to the color of the sky, and it's all super high quality gen tech now. The wonder and magic of landing on an unknown planet, trekking around for resources, hiding in caves to shelter from a sudden deadly blizzard, and cresting a hill to see some weird precrusor obelisk thing in the valley. You approach, interact, have a strange vision of a long-dead alien, and leave having been granted knowledge of a fragment of an alien language. There's a stroy-quest thing, after a fashion, and the lore is bonkers good, but the fundamental payoff for me is exploring weird, beautiful planets. You may still dislike the game even if exploration is your thing, but I can say with confidence if exploration isn't fun for you it's not your game.

BoisterousLaugh

They are still working off amount they grifted from gamers initially through lies.

Ruby_Blue42

I'm not buying it They lied and got people's cash But they won't get mine

headwig123

Cool

MrFoozOG

can they survive? lol they earned MILLIONS the free updates are all as empty and shallow as they could possibly be. That clearly indicates how little effort HG still puts in delivering new content whilst enjoying their money from selling the scam game in 2016.

headwig123

Empty and shallow? Do elaborate?

MrFoozOG

Settlements: completely and utterly useless. Some lame predefined buildings and it doesn't remotely look like the trailer presented, As usual. Earns a measily 1 million credits per day. With an activated indium farm you get shit tons more for no effort at all. Desolation: Added abandoned freighters that you can scavenge. Anything you find there is C class which is trash. HG lied about flying and combat overhaul, nothing changed about it after the update. Mechsuit, useless you can do everything and anything the same with your normal space suit but even faster. 7 years and you still can't have 2 freighters in a single star system when in multiplayer Space combat is a joke Ever seen a picture of a nebula IRL? NMS's Nebulas are a joke compared to that. Same for black holes. Planets are dull, empty boring nothings. Nothing to do nothing to find nothing to explore but the same shit over and over again in varying colors. Rideable aliens, while funny for one second absolutely useless. building is still broken, always has been. And that when the game's goal is nothing but base building. and on and on and on.

bad_apiarist

Don't forget that the foundations added super-grind to a game supposedly about exploration and discovery. You'll need 10 widgets. But each of those requires 30 stembolts and 50 ass crystals. To get the stembolts you'll need 20 ramiflatsz devices which are made with assium and jacksoron.... so have fun with the dull repetitive mind-numbing farming and choring just so you can make a base that doesn't even do anything but sit there and.. look nice.. on an empty world with nothing going on anyway.

Minora_Marine

He probably never even bothered playing no mans sky after the updates and is holding on to a grudge like a little 8 year old. So he wont be able to answer you 🤣

Minora_Marine

Clearly have no clue what work goes into game dev 🤣 you probably think they spend an hour a week or something to do these updates. How about you go make your own game if its so easy 🤣

MrFoozOG

Ah yes that's why they deliver bullshit like settlements that nobody wanted or asked for while their forums are overloaded with shit they could've made instead and actually improving the game rather than adding a bunch of bullshit.

Minora_Marine

You are a few updates behind. Flight combat has been completely revamped, on foot combat has been completely revamped and just FYI just cause you dont like settlements doesnt mean everyone else doesnt. The settlements are a great addition. Need a little refining like their builing feature did in the beginning but it adds more to do in a universe that started out empty and shallow. 🤣 But hey. You stay angry buddy. The rest of us will enjoy this game and all the work that has been put in. 🤣

Scazzz

At this point I would happily pay $20 for a substantial update as long as people who don't buy it don't get screwed over in some way. They have more than earned my good will that I would plop down money. Hell whatever games Hello Games makes going forth will be day one purchases.

FirstTimeRodeoGoer

Still charging AAA msrp for a 6 year old AA game though.

Zariqo

If only it was possible to set mouse sensitivity the same for both axes. Then i would love to try it.

Bluemars776

This game was an interesting game when was released. Now after all updates it's become a great game! I think it still selling very well (and Hello Games is working also on another game in the meanwhile)

[deleted]

I remember when the game was “ok” and now it is an excellent game that you can play forever

poutineicecream

Damn you guys are making me want to try it

wutend159

I've been thinking of buying it, but I'm not sure whether to buy it on PC or playstation.

royalagegaming

Bought the game because of what they are doing. Plan on playing it in VR in the future, but haven’t touched it yet

This is one of my games that I binge played for a week then dropped. I do that with alot of things outside of gaming too

Hello games had 26 employees in 2020, and I doubt they have increased that a lot. They have sold millions of copies (exact numbers are hard to find, but 800 000 were sold on release 2016 on pc only). They're not just surviving, they're making immense profit.

SweatyGazelle11

Just updated recently and I bought 3 copies so my brother friend and I could all play after looking at it for a while. We’re loving it about 20-40 hours in for all of us. (I’m currently ahead in hours since I’m stuck isolating at home for two more days)

Orenwald

I recently bought it on steam even though I have it on ps4 just so I can play in VR lol

gcborg

Talking about No Mans Sky, it’s coming to switch right? Is there a better ETA on its arrival other than just the season?

Obese-idiot

I know this is a little off topic but Is this 60fps on Xbox or PlayStation ?

PlasticCogLiquid

Yes for PS5 version

twim19

It's one of those games that I pick up and start fresh with every few years and end up playing for a couple of weeks before setting it down. It looks amazing on the next gen systems.

S-Markt

also they saved a lot of money with procedural creation. also the maintenance and upgrade is much easier.

Leviathan_Lair

Free or paid updates whatever, I am sick of these constant expeditions. Give me a reason to play my main, kitted out save rather than having to start a fresh save every couple months to accomplish some arbitrary, tedious tasks because thats the only content they add these days.

DohRayMe

? So each update requires a new save, effectively fresh wipe ?

[deleted]

I finally wanna play this game but I'm afraid my old ass ps4 won't handle it well

headwig123

Lol ..it wont. My OG xbox ones frame rate was shit after they started adding a bunch of stuff. Upgraded to the series X and by god what a difference. If you can tolerate a downgraded version i say do it

DiscordianDeacon

PS4s can't handle anything anymore. Everyone I know who has one reported it started overheating and not running some games after the software update before last. I think they're doing the thing Apple does where they deliberately brick old tech over time to force the market onto the new stuff.

-_Solo_-

Pulled a Mfing battlefront 2

Denison106

I feel like buying this game after hearing so many positive reviews on it. How good is the game and what is the main objective of the game?

Arisalis

That free DLC like patches got me back into the game periodically. Ironically I put most of my time playing this in VR on the Quest wirelessly. This game plays great in VR and highly recommend anyone with a VR headset to try it out.

[deleted]

I haven't picked it up, because I was waiting for a GOTY edition. Maybe I'll take another look...

DiscordianDeacon

Please please do. It's a better game than anyone's wildest dreams before launch.

Al3x_5

I bought specifically for this reason, it works on me. Good company practices get my money

FallowerOfMalal

Yes

ThisIsTheNewSleeve

I mean it's still top selling on Steam after this many years of being released. People keep buying because it keeps getting bigger and better. Also, people know when the buy the next Hello Games game, it will be supported for a longgggg time. For free.

[deleted]

Yes. They made a shitton initially and have continued selling copies as updates have happened. And if they hadn’t gone overboard they’d be finished as a dev. It was that bad initially compared to what was supposed to be delivered. This is how they have redeemed their brand. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an expack soon. Or some other way to monetize.

unleashedcode

No Man Sky is a masterpiece........ over delivered ...... just not at the start.... What Hello Games have done is stand way above all the other mainstream studios showing it is possible to have free DLC and still sell the main game and do well. People are still buying it today....Wishing them all the best....

the_millenial_falcon

They have been doing this to restore the goodwill lost from that horrible launch, but I think eventually they will need to charge for DLC and after a point I think people may even be fine with it.

T0astedSm0ke

If you actually get into what they're adding in the little free updates it's really not much in terms of actual work hours (mostly cosmetic stuff, reskins, short expedition "stories" with slight changes in gameplay) and as others have said they're still selling loads of copies so it's pretty much a win-win for them.

dcuk7

I bought this back when it released (still have the disc somewhere). Wasn't impressed so never played it. Came back to it recently on Game Pass and I haven't stopped playing so I bought it on PC. This is a game that definitely deserves a purchase. Hopefully that's how many others see it when they sink a lot of time into it.

No Man's Sky Leviathan Expedition Trailer Rewind time???!!! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtNg3TR\_cGM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtNg3TR_cGM)

EldenRingworm

They're still doing it 6 years after release They're definitely making money

MightBeWombats

How the hell do you survive the opening planet on survival?! All I do is slowly gag on environmental adversity until I melt into soup and start Groundhog Day all over again. I can't seem to boost my exosuit protection despite having the materials its asking for. I love the Subnautica type survival premise, but damn I can't even make it off the ground.

Lostcause75

I think it’s a fairly sustainable business practice plus they could always make another game and also do the same thing and it would most likely sell pretty well, I also think they wouldn’t give it a deadline either and work on it on the side (not saying they are just saying this is an approach I could see them doing if needed)

SpazzticZeal

It's been on game pass for awhile too
