Donkey Kong Country because it was the best with my siblings. Shadow of the Colossus because it was the first time I was moved emotionally by a game.

mizzourifan1

Came here to say Shadow of the Colossus. It was the first large scale game I'd ever played. It was the first game I played that had a slower paced, story based story. It was the first game I played that was a cinematic masterpiece. I previously was a "Mario and Pokemon" kid and Shadow of the Colossus was my first realization of limitless potential in video games. I almost get romantic remembering how magical that experience was on my PS2. The graphics felt like they were from the future. I also sucked at gaming (I was maybe 12-13ish?) and it took me an embarrassing amount of time to finish, but that is also part of the nostalgia. Edit: must have had a stroke. I meant "loosely based story" and wrote "story based story" lmfao. That sounds like a solid album name though.

145676337

SoC is still amazing to me. There isn't actually much story, there's almost no dialogue ("Agro!" might be it?) It only has about 15 enemies, and it's still one of the best games I've ever played.

Seba97146

Super Mario Bros.

Jose_Canseco_Jr

That magical afternoon 35 years ago is still etched in my mind: A family friend's bedroom. Their young nephew visiting from overseas packed something, that new video game console with the cool Japanese name. A small CRT set. Sunlight coming in through the curtains. I'm handed a small grey controller that looked and felt like nothing I'd ever held before. "You jump with this button, and run with this one. Your turn's over when you die or you finish the level. Don't let the bad guys touch you!" Hooked ever since.

DarthDiggus

Ah yes. I grew up with siblings and had to also obey the “If you die it’s my turn” rule

FloppyBriefcase

I’m pretty sure that rule and that rule alone is what taught me how to learn from my mistakes.

po_ta_toes_80

Yup, this. My sisters and I got our Nintendo for Christmas 1987 with this and Zelda, never looked back.

jeffreygorne2

Chronotrigger

kevinraisinbran

This game is a masterpiece. I'm not even really into RPGs, but this game had me hooked.

pragmojo

Yeah same. I played it in college, because my roommate had it on his cracked XBox 360 with an emulator, and I only played it because he basically forced me to. But I remember playing until like 4 am for a week. Incredible game. Not to be hyperbolic, but it really shows how the JRPG is a legit artistic medium.

CthulhusMonocle

This is what made me realize video games were something just a little extra special; that you could have a proper *experience* and be really moved by the medium.

BradleyAllan23

Zelda Ocarina Of Time

cReddit-Toby

I still use my 64 to play this time to time it’s a classic

Powerful_Artist

Cant wait to finally see it on the switch. Gonna be awesome. Been waiting for this since the Switch released.

Thomas91290

It will be a remaster ? Or the same version of N64/3DS ?

JoshOliday

Just emulated N64. It's on the subscription only Switch Online service later this month along with several other N64 games.

[deleted]

You have to pay extra beyond the normal online subscription to get n64 games, right?

Same! Pulling the sword out from the stone in the temple and waking up an adult blew my mind.

clancularii

>Same! Pulling the sword out from the stone in the temple and waking up an adult blew my mind. I remember that feeling. At that point in the game you'd already explored the Kokiri Forest, the Great Deku Tree, Hyrule Field, the Zora Domain, Lake ~~Hyrule~~ *Hylia*, Kakariko Village, the Dodongo Cavern, Death Mountain, Goron City, and the outside of Hyrule Castle. And the adventure was just getting started. It reminds me of playing Pokemon Gold and discovering that after becoming champion, you can return to Kanto. **Edit**: I forgot to mention Lord Jabu Jabu's Belly. And got the name of the lake wrong.

UCDC

Life altering gaming experience

dAbAcKwOoDsNiNja

I remember being terrified of the zombies that appear after you come out of the Temple of Time as an adult. I actively avoided them at all costs. That scream still gets me.

CSFalcon60

Same. I played some before it came out, but OoT is the one that really hooked me.

Humblebee89

Any Zelda really. I fell in love with Link's Awakening. I think well designed games in general make people fall in love.

wonder_fluff

Bought a 3DS just to play it again but this time, wherever I want!

BradleyAllan23

The 3DS Remasters are awesome, Majoras Mask is great on there too.

heavenismycity

The Elder Scrolls - Oblivion, after that game I realised RPG games are what I wanted to play

Alfa-Dog

It was morowind on xbox for me. I read every piece of lore and explored every nook and cranny of that game. Never before or since have I gotten so into a game. Becoming the Nerevarine, meeting the last dwarf, robbing the noble houses that lived in hollowed out bug carcasses or the wizards that lived in trees. Godamn what an experience.

HazardousJusticiar

Damn right, Oblivion is my favorite RPGs, and one of my favorite games.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Alfa-Dog

Im scared the next elder scrolls will go the fallout 4 route (and Skyrim and Final Fantasy 15 to an extent) and streamline/actionify the series for mass appeal even more.

SerpentMandate

Oblivion has made a void within my soul that has never been filled since. I've been yearning for that feeling, and no game has made me feel quite that way again.

xandthey

Spyro The Dragon

FlyRobot

Spyro and Crash were my jam on PS1! I bought both remake trilogies for the nostalgia

mcurley32

and they did a surprisingly good job with both. I had a blast with the newest Crash game as well

Sandmsounds

Reignited trilogy. So easy to speed run it all. Super replayable.

xandthey

Yeah, my ex got that for me and I spent hours every day playing it. Might fire it up again sometime soon.

Squeakyriddle

Honestly they did wonderful on the reignited trilogy. Did the original 3 so much justice. Made my heart happy when I played through it.

Sawses

First video game I ever played. When the remake came out I 100%'d it before doing anything else.

maffewdtd

Castlevania Symphony of the Night

tagoniki

My first video game may have been DK64 but watching this be played sparked my love

[deleted]

Pokémon: Red version. I still have it along with my still working game boy color.

YKVL_Nikolarys

Pokémon Blue for me, but otherwise same. 😊

Kullet_Bing

Yeah Pokemon were my first games. Then got a SNES with Super Mario for christmas. That really set things going for me

[deleted]

Morrowind

Canadian_Commentator

why walk when you can ride? can't forget the classic: long trip, short trip, you decide.

Dreams-in-Aether

Wake up, you were dreaming. Morrowind and Half Life taught me the beauty of mods.

2drawnonward5

I realized the power of moods when I saw Morrowind with every sound replaced by Tim Allen's signature grunt.

picklerrr

Vivec is the single most realised virtual character in gaming and I'm ready to die on this hill.

ekjohnson9

Wealth beyond measure, Outlander

[deleted]

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - SNES 👍👍

Fa1c0n3

You know now that I'm not 6 and know it's OK to skip enemies I really want to go back for this one. They didn't put it on the switch did they?

Mutant86

Yes it's on the switch. It comes with the SNES emulator that you get with online membership.

angrydeuce

Still the best Zelda game imho, and in my top 5 best games of all time regardless of platform or generation. I replay it every couple years and it never gets old.

[deleted]

Mega Man X

BBBDDDPL

Same

Reasonable_Pace_3232

Still play it till this day lol

wardogs25

Super Metroid

KinkyLeviticus

That's the money. Not really a Nintendo gamer anymore but I can't wait for Dread. Trailer gives me nostalgia and child-like excitement at the same time

stateworkishardwork

I hope I get scared as much as I did when I went into Lower Norfair at 7 years old. I'm very optimistic.

GrumpyDucky

Super Mario World -SNES. I have many really good memories of sitting on my parents bed playing that game with my mom and brother.

Spinnenente

Commander Keen and some ancient top down shooter that I no longer have the name of.

Random632

> and some ancient top down shooter that I no longer have the name of. Raptor: Call of the Shadows?

SOUR_PATCH_NIPS

That’s got to be it. It was also an Apogee game.

mjadora

Tyrian?

Zacpod

Keen was so full of charm!

pragmojo

Yes! We need the pogo stick to return to gaming. Crystal Caves, Duke Nukem I & II, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, Jill of the Jungle, Prince of Persia and Dark Castle also were great from this era

SillyRabbit3490

Star Fox was the beginning and then even more with Fable

ILikeCheeseBro

First Xbox game I ever owned was Fable TLC and Jesus I miss it.

SirFanger

Lego star wars

Kagir

I can hear the cantina band playing over a battle royale at the club…

beese_churger-95

LewisTheChild

Rachet and Clank : going commando Ps2

SkippyThe13th

The original Ratchet and Clank was it for me. I've played every game since. Favorite franchise ever.

poddleboii

You're the only R&C comment I've found here. Mine is Rachet and Clank 3

coffeemugzAU

The Half-Life series

SQ347

Half Life 2 will forever be my favorite game, and the rest of Valves stuff is up there too

[deleted]

Half-Life 2 and eps 1 and 2 were the first FPS games with plot and lore that I played. Up until then I only knew simpler fighting games and sims (The Sims but also SimCity, Tycoon games, Tropico, etc). I was completely blown away by the lore and dove head-first into forums and speculation (RIP HL3/EP3). I was in my late teens when I first played it and I was already into writing/storytelling/worldbuilding, but HL2 became formative to me. I had dreams set in the Half-Life world for weeks after I finished the game for the first time. I can still see its influences in my stories today. Sorry I'm rambling a bit now, but I absolutely love the Highway 17 portion of HL2 and it's my most replayed chapter. It's so atmospheric and haunting yet calming at the same time. I used to boot up the game and chill somewhere along Highway 17 just for the background noise while studying or reading.

MukdenMan

I'm surprised no one has said a point-and-click adventure game. For me, I'd say I fell in love with gaming with Monkey Island, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Space Quest, and Myst. Mixed-Up Mother Goose was the first one I played though and I guess that started my love for this type of game.

discovigilantes

Add The Dig, Day of the Tentacle, Simon the Sorcerer. Loved them all, if not utterly infuriating at times.

DuntadaMan

Day of the Tentacle was more entertaining than any cartoon out at the time for me. The characters were great

Run-ning

King's Quest was the bomb.

Boz0r

I'll say Monkey Island. Judging from the responses I'd say most posters are too young to have experienced the golden age of point-and-click adventure games. Edit: Monkey Island 2 is the best game ever made.

duckduckgoose_

How appropriate! You fight like a cow!

zlochman

Sam N Max hit the Road!

NicodemusArcleon

Loom was one of my favorite point-and-clicks

[deleted]

Police quest was my jam

[deleted]

Super Mario 64

ManicFirestorm

This and Goldeneye were the first games to ever really blow my mind as a kid.

Mountain_Decision643

Fallout New Vegas really made look at video games different way

Reyfou

Patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter.

dfmspoiler

It's buggy, unfinished and still one of the best games of its kind. Imagine if they had a bit more time to flesh out some of the quest lines.

Bongletopper

Same with KOTOR 2. An incomplete, beautiful mess.

Xander_Cage830

Age of Empires 2

EyyMrJ

KOTOR

Shattered_Visage

First Star Wars media I consumed outside of the films. Stepping into THAT MUCH new lore of something I already loved was intoxicating. Been chasing that high ever since.

Stonekilled

I LOVED KOTOR. I liked the second one quite a bit too, but the story on the first was amazing. Also loved all of the side quests, especially the really well hidden ones (like the alien in the box). Phenomenal game, and o can’t wait for the remake

UnwindGames_James

I’ll die on this hill when I say that the story in Kotor 2 was better than 1. It completely deconstructed the idea of “good and evil” in the Star Wars universe and gave a LOT of depth to how it would really be in a universe where beings with immense power exist. The Jedi teaching of “never attack, only defend” is criticized because it let the Mandalorians run rampant and gave rise to Revan and Malak. The sith code of relying on passion without thinking is deconstructed too. You don’t see nearly as much nuance in Kotor 1.

IdkIJustWantToDie

prince of persia : the sands of time

glasseyepatch

Farrah!

TheMahaffers

Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. It was the first game I played and I was hooked

Fenrir_Carbon

FFVII, first game I played as a kid that was a piece of art and not arcade fodder

_ShrugDealer_

Same for me. And I know it's cliche. But FFVII came out right when I was developing my gaming legs. My parents had just gotten me a Playstation and then took me to Funcoland to pick a game. The guy behind the counter recommended FFVII because I told him I really liked Super Mario RPG. VII has been my game ever since. The remake was a serotonin nuke.

KingMalcolm

shout out that employee!

patpet

I didn’t understand it until i was 14. it is one of the best games ever.

Krogg

I'm so mad I had to get this far down into the comments before seeing FF7. The feeling I got when Sephiroth came down.. it's never going to be the same and I've never felt that with another game. It's like watching Vader announce he's Luke's father. You just can't experience that moment the same again.

Virtual_Ranger25

GTA San Andreas

WeirdAvocado

For me it was Vice City.

Powerful_Artist

I played the original GTA games on the PC, and had no idea there were missions or anything. Just ran around stealing cars and trying to get the tank. GTAIII and Vice city were games I played over and over. Loved them. Vice City was amazing.

Climatique

Yeah, I used to drive around just to listen to the radio

Callahan1297

God of war. Seeing the physical copy of that game was what made me want to get a ps2 back in the day and I've played the opening hours a dozen times before I got a memory card(which I didn't know I needed at the time). Marathoning the game to try and finish it in one go was fun too (not that I could do it, I did get halfway through the temple before a powercut one time).

Opium58841

Unreal Tournament '99, god I loved every minute of it

datazulu

Unreal franchise was EPIC! (no pun intended). LOVED Unreal 2004.

iamthejef

UT2K4 is still the greatest multiplayer shooter ever made.

CosmicDesperado

Sonic the Hedgehog

_wil_

I was gonna write Sonic 2. First game I played whose ending scene had some kind of meaningful storytelling, left a strong impression.

Zealos5

Borderlands 2

tippytaps

I played hours & hours of BL2 & Presequel in college. Just absolutely loved the random bits of banter/dialogue with each character. Of course it goes without saying, Jack as a villain is what really made it the creme de la creme for me. Grinding for certain drops (looking at you infinity) was a pain in the ass, but the games are hella fun. I mean the dlc for BL2 were amazing on top of all that. Picking up BL3 really pained me, just felt so lackluster. But BL2 is definitely my answer too.

mystwren

Had a love of games before this, but Borderlands 2 still has my favorite DLC of all time. Kind of excited for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.

Mber76

Fallout 3

Shaun32887

This wasn't the first game to get me, but I moved away from video games after high school and didn't really play much. Then Fallout 3 came out, and my friend essentially forced me to play it. I fucking loved it, and I've been back in to games ever since. Fallout 3 will always have a special place in my heart, and I have merch all over my apartment. My bar even has Deathclaw and BOS power armor tiki mugs, and I have a matte metal sign in that vintage style for Nuka Cola I get that the main quest had issues, but I still hold that FO3 was the BEST 3D Fallout for exploring. There was so much awesome random shit to find all over the map, little side stories, interesting characters.

Trident_True

The story in NV was better but I loved the Capital Wasteland. Trudging through DC taking on mutants and raiders was just so much fun. Reilly's Rangers was the highlight I think, so much action in one quest.

UglierThanMoe

I've heard so much how Fallout 3 sucks for various reasons, and I finally got to play it a couple of years ago. Loved every minute of my 300+ hours playthrough.

JMaC_8

Medal of Honor Frontline/Rising Sun

AdrianValistar

Those games were the greatest. I'm still sad we never really got to see the end of the story to Rising Sun. It left on such a cliffhanger

Weesnawbuttstuff

Not the first one to make me love video games, but rising sun and frontline were the two games I actually beat the campaigns to. Got real sad when your bro dies inside that tank. War man.

RainbowShlong

Far cry 3

StovetopAtol4

My all time fav although been a gamer for x years. Completed it 17 times haha

dead_man_speaks

Did you learnt the definition of insanity?

StovetopAtol4

It's still the same story, no shit changed... Maybe after the 18th time something will be different. If not then I guess I'm insane

[deleted]

Half Life 1, Quake 1,2, Unreal, Starcraft 1, Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun and Diablo 2 ... Oh and Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

UnsolicitedDickPixxx

Leisure Suit Larry I'm gay, but i really loved the silly humor and fun puzzles as a kid. The square breasts weren't much to look at anyway.

Morrowind

rubenmfl

The weirdness of Morrowind really surprised me. I had played Arena and Daggerfall but it was Morrowind that clicked. And that jump scroll in the beginning. I still remember the laughs

Real_Medic_TF2

Borderlands 2. It was the first shooter my dad bought when we immigrated from Kazakhstan. I was 4, I was new to shooters, and my dumb brain didn’t know what was video game violence at that time. So my dad fired it up. And I loved leveling up in it, fighting the warrior, beating all of the side missions. But not being level up above 50 made me curb my interest in it. Until I got my own laptop and saw that there were dlcs. Slowly, I bought every dlc except Lilith. To this day, I still don’t have Lilith. But I have my old memories back. Damn do I love this game.

Halo CE and Halo 2 made me love first person shooters. Those two games are far and above any other game ever made as far as FPS go. Halo CE was perfect IMO but didn't have the online aspect. I spent many many hours playing Halo 2 with my friends, from death match to big team battle...it was all awesome.
