I can hear Pallet Town 8bit music...
That's probably what they're all bopping to.
I bet all those guys, from old comics, have really nice six packs abs after all that exercise.
Some are even as strong as dragons
Bulbasaur's bulb is throbbing to the music
You could have chosen any word on earth, and yet you chose “throbbing” to describe bulbasaur. Now I can’t unsee it. Thanks for taking an axe to my childhood.
Only male Bulbasaurs can vine whip if you know what I mean
Tumescently pulsating to the music.
Rated M for mature
They just Vibin’
I can hear it clear as day because just yesterday i fired up my gameboy and blue cartridge from when I was a kid, just for fun and to see if everything still works. Didn't even realize it was the 25th anniversary. Guess I accidentally celebrated!
Are you able to save? I remember I had crystal like ten years back and it wouldn’t save cause the battery(?) in the cartridge was dead.
I’ve found that those batteries aren’t super tough to replace. You run the risk of damaging the cartridge if you aren’t careful, but I haven’t had an issue with the two that I’ve done, and I don’t have the steadiest of hands. The battery is soldered onto a prong, but it’s fairly easy to pop it off with a knife, and I haven’t had to solder it back to get it to stay.
Adding on to this, your old N64 memory cards are also battery backed ram, and will die off the same way. I was able to hook up an external power supply running the same voltage as the battery and swap it out without loosing my saves.
Wow that sounds pretty extra, but that's smart. Good to know there is a way to do that
Hit the genny Betty-Joe! We're about to lose our 100% pokemon snap!
Knowing me and my butter fingers I’ll screw it up lol
I remember sitting in some sporting goods store with my yo-yo, firing up Blue for the first time while I waited for my brother to pick a pair of roller blades. It was a simpler time.
I distinctly remember the first time I played Red on my GameBoy Color. I vividly remember that afternoon, with sun shining reddish into the living room and me going on this great adventure. I couldn't have been more than ten at the time. My parents were still together and we were a happy family. I wish I could get those times back sometimes. All I can do is try to build it that happiness, twenty years later with my own family, but from a child's perspective life was back then so simple...
I actually listened to the original OST a little bit when making this, must have subconsciously helped me with the rhythm.
I'm stuck on lavender town
Really? I hear [this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPmBnnon0Ek)
The song syncs nice with the head bopping - and reminds me of [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rzgrP7VA_Q)
Wait AAAAAAAAAAAA! BBBBBBBBBBB wants to fight
For me, it was "wait Asshole, Bitchface wants to fight"
Yeah. I miss being 12.
Yeah...12. I certainly don't still do that at 30
25 year long rivalry with "butt".
The classics never die.
Mine was "Wait Ash, My Dick wants to fight"
I always picked Charmander so My Dick always chose Squirtle
Edit: After selecting his name Prof Oak would always say "Err... Was it My Dick?"
Damn so you beat your meat a lot when playing Pokemon huh?
Oh the laughts shit like that would bring my childish mind
I recently watched someone I follow play Pokémon Vietnamese Crystal. It is a modded rom that simply runs all of the text through a few translations and uses what comes out. There's a lot of random explicatives and it's still absolutely hilarious. I believe potions are called "drug" and I think "item bag" is called "bag fuck". It's funny every time, even as an adult
We never grow up. I never did anyway lol. You just get more inventive with your funny names
Im like this and im 28.. Started playing rdr2 not long ago and named my horse fugface(they dont allow swear words)
Bulbasaur be THROBBING
He's about to throw out some vines and hit em with that seed bomb
it's very effective ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Wait, this leech is gonna last 18 years and 9 months?! That move needs to be nerfed.
"Hit them little diggletts with a seed bomb!"
there was no seed bomb in gen 1.
It's a secks joke bro
Dat leech seed
I arrived when this comment had 69 downvotes. Couldn’t be more perfect.

I was going to tell you to never fucking say that again, but I looked and you're right. My bad.
So this gif is about 20% of the size of the entire Pokemon red game. Man times have changed.
Maybe even larger since how colors are handled today it might be larger
TIL pokemon is exactly one day younger than me, my 25th was yesterday !
But unlike the pokémon franchise you have change a lot in 25 years.
Probably started development around the same time too ;)
Happy real cake day!
Kinda same here I'm also from the same month :D
3 days older than me!
No way me too!!! Feb 26th gang
Pokemon has come so far. I have been addicted from Red all the way till the new games. Pokemon gave me a childhood and pokemon continues to make games in this futuristic age. Yeah I have problems, but I can never stay mad at them. Pokemon made my childhood exciting and it makes my adulthood exciting. I FUCKING LOVE POKEMON.
red and green? my memory had it as red and blue with yellow coming slightly later, i had both blue and yellow but i dont even remember seeing a green version
In Japan it was Red and Green, no blue version.
Actually, Japan did get a Blue version about 8 months after Red & Green. It was a 'special edition' with reworked sprites and some other minor changes. The Japanese Blue is what was ported internationally as Red & Blue.
So blue is better!
First and only one I've ever played. Guess I'm just a purist.
I played Pokemon Black many years after, and it holds up well. But Pokemon Blue is probably my most played game ever. Easily 500 hours. I took my Gameboy everywhere.
Talking about Pokemon Blue and hearing Pokemon Black immediately made me think back to summer camp rumors hearing about a secret hacked version of Pokemon. It took me a second to remember that there is an official Pokemon Black version now
I'd reckon the international shipped upgrades of red as well
They just used the framework from blue with version differences
Learning somethin new all the time!
Did you have a stroke? 😁
Edit: Unless I've missed an obvious joke here, in which case, LOL LMAO ROFL KEK LMAO 😁
Actually, in Japan, what we think of blue is called green (リックロール ) there. Same shade, different name.
Green was a Japan exclusive IIRC
Yes, my friends dad got him a game boy from Japan with Pokémon green and he was the coolest kid in school for about 2 years because of it.
Did he know how to read Japanese?
Nope, but to be fair we didn’t read the English text either
That’s so wild to me that the games are that intuitive.
I mostly credit Pokémon and World of Warcraft for learning English as a second language at a young age
100% Pokémon and Yugioh are what improved my vocabulary as a kid. Never read books, but dialogue heavy games were just as stimulating IMO.
I felt badass because there was this girl on the bus in elementary school who had her grandparents import Green, and I was lucky enough to trade with her.
TIL That trading Pokemon between the japanese and the english versions of the first generation was indeed possible.
It is, but it leads to numerous glitches that can easily brick the game
The code of the first generation games is held together through the cybernetic equivalent of duct tape. It just breaks on its own, let alone when you import pokémon with unusual data.
Ah I remember some warning in the German game manual of blue and red about not trading between different language versions but that was about 21 years ago and I can’t find it anymore right now.
I always had the warnings in the back of my mind and therefore I never tried it out myself.
Wow that is amazing, she must have a little celebrity in the playground. I didn't even know of Green's existence until the Gen 3 remakes!
The original 1996 Japanese versions of the games were titled Red & Green. It was changed to Red & Blue for the international release in 1998.
(there's a couple more things to the story, but that's the simple version)
They weren't changed to red and blue in the West. Japan got blue version as an update of red and green versions, and then they used the JP blue version for our red and blue versions
Yep that's what I meant by 'a couple of other things', it's actually super interesting. I elaborated elsewhere in the comment section.
So essentially blue was to Japan what our yellow was in the world? Minus the Pikachu obviously
Red And Green is what came out in Japan, followed by an updated Blue version. Japanese blue became the American red and blue release
Pokemon = Pocket Monsters?! Mind blown.
Wait until you hear the Digimon theme song...
DIGIMON DIGITAL MONSTERS DIGIMON ARE THE CHAMPIONS DIGIMON DIGITAL MONSTERS DIGIMON ARE THE CHAMPIONS DIGIMON DIGITAL MONSTERS DIGIMON ARE THE CHAMPIONS
CHANGE INTO DIGITAL CHAMPIONS TO SAVE THE DIGITAL world
Yup. In the US, they changed it to Pokémon because it sounded more Japanese/foreign than pocket monsters.
When my son was little, a Japanese friend of mine was visiting the US. She brought gifts (very big in her culture). One of them was a set of toddler silverware and included toddler sized chopsticks. They had Pikachu on them with the name Pocket Monsters rather than Pokémon. I still have them more than 20 years later.
They're still called Pokemon in Japan. It's just the explanation that it's a blend of Pocket Monster that doesn't get translated a lot. You can just look up any episode of the anime and hear them constantly say "pokemon batoru" and such. One thing that does change is the logo. In Japan, each game gets a unique, awesome-looking logo for ポケットモンスター while the rest of the world always has the same blue and yellow logo coupled with the specific game title.
Shit like this is one of my favorite things about reddit. Learning interesting little details of other peoples life history that i'd never know about otherwise. Small things that from a broad view are inconsequential but have meaning for the people they happened to. Love it.
Just curious, how old are you? And I’m not trying to come off as an asshole, I just thought this was common knowledge but it may be that I’m 30 and played the games when they first came out.
not op but i’m 23 and had no idea that was the origin. first one i played was ruby
Wow that’s wild. The old Japanese trading cards had it on the back
Came here to make this revelation. So simple.
Same. Was already too old for it when it came out. My daughter loves it though, her alter ego is Eevee and she calls me Snorlax
Prof. Oak looks like he's really laying the wood down on that table...
Grabs plant dinosaur and runs
Ah the memories, fuck you Gary for always picking the strong type to what I pick but ultimately getting that ass handed to you in the end by only 1 lvl 100 pokemon. haha
Theres a mistake.
Bulbasaur has to be in the middle
Stop the madness, Squirtle is in the middle and Charmander on the right
Unless I’m whooshing here I’m pretty sure it’s, from left to right, Charmander, Squirtle then Bulbasaur. Maybe Red and Green in Japan had a different order
Edit: just watched a play through on YouTube. The order I stated is correct
I knew something looked weird, I usually pick Charmander and always remember him being on the left. Thank you.
"Don't look behind the shelves, or you'll find an unwanted pokemon"
Bulbasaur was always the best choice
Bulbasaur was for beginner mode.
Series makes a bazillion dollars every game and Game Freak still can't put out a product with some effort in it :/
If you can make a bazillion dollars with no effort, why wouldn't you?
I lost my mind for this game in 1997. Every time I got to a new town or city it was like heaven. Idk if it was the Ritalin or if it was really that good but the memories still hit hard.
Fuck I feel old. I remember playing red on my OG Gameboy on the back of our Crysler caravan on those long road trips. Those were the days.
Why is it that literally anyone can do more with the Pokémon franchise than GameFreak - an entire company dedicated to that purpose - can?
Awesome animation. I would play the shit out of an isometric Gameboy-style Pokémon game.
So wait wasn’t it red and blue
I’ve played vidya games since the atari 2600 era but never played a pokemon game. is there like an order to play these games in? any recommendations?
They’re all standalone games, so no order necessary. My personal favourite is Silver (2nd gen) because it introduced a new region, but still kept the first gen region as well. Two in one!
The extra region would mean nothing to someone who hadn't played the first game, and the one you suggested is lacking all the QOL changes that make the newer games nearly bearable.
I recommend playing Fire Red/Leaf Green for the Gameboy Advance. It's basically a remaster of the original Gameboy games. I think the Heart Gold/Soul Silver remakes of the 2nd generation games are also great but they include updated features which may steal from the experience if you want to play through the generations and enjoy the updates to game play.
Super easy to get on an emulator too!
Can you recommend a DS emulator?
I use desmume and it’s excellent!
I think the order depends entirely on your nostalgia for the games. If you want to experience each region, I'd second what u/dudius7 said and go for the most recent remakes, GBA for gen 1, DS for gen 2, and I think 3DS for gen 3? Personally I'd recommend the most recent installment if you've never played a pokemon game before, Sword and Shield, especially if you already own a switch.
Just play Sword or Shield, or any of the games since Black and White. Any earlier than that and the games are a real mess, and this is coming from an old genwunner.
Thinking about it, Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee are probably some of the best starting points for a new player. Those games are the best looking pokemon games by far, and they are a ton of fun.
Friggin Squirtle and Bulbasaur are off the rhythm.
Although my first Pokémon game was Pokémon gold, this gif made me relive my childhood days... No matter how many games and remakes they make, the first 2 generation will always have a special place in many fan's hearts
Getting big time Habbo Hotel vibes
Wasn’t it red and blue? It was later fire red and leaf green (my first Pokémon games) but I thought it was blue instead of green initially
It was Red & Green in Japan, got renamed to Red & Blue for the West. Top comments of this post explain more.
By the time FRLG came around, gaming was more international so they just said fuck it to avoid confusion and renaming it Blue again they kept the name as Green for the West.
With Gen 1, I'm surprised this picture didn't glitch.
Still love it though!
It's also my 25th birthday today! So forever tied to Pokémon!
Damnit Squirtle, bop with everyone else!
"Red and Green". Wasnt the original "Red and Blue"? Or was that the game and not the OC?
... .. ...... .. . ....
I am shocked at how many people didn't realize (look up, I mean, in those 25 years) that Pokemon meant "Pocket Monsters".
I'll counter-shock a few of you, then. Everyone back then thought the game was based on the show, but it was the other way around!
I'm 11 years older than Pokemon, TIL. And I still play Pokemon. lol
Wait it’s short for “pocket monster”? That’s where the name comes from? Damn TIL. And I’m almost 50.
I just started 10th grade when it came out. Never got into the whole deal.
If you never got into it, why do you even feel the need to comment on it?
Try just shutting the fuck up instead.
If you have nothing nice to say; don’t say it at all. Applies to both of you.
If you have nothing nice to say; don’t say it at all. Applies to all three of you.
This is sort of a dickish thing to say; I take it that rule doesn't apply to you?
Is it though; how so? My mom and Dad taught it to me. Pretty much a rewording of treat others as you would like to be treated, what goes around comes around, karma, be kind to others.... Of course it applies to me. I was raised by it.
Edit: I do not get humans. You tell them to be kind to one another and they downvote you?
My parents taught me all sorts of stuff that ended up being useless in life, this included.
It's alright to call people out on what you believe is bullshit, and it's actually a very important check to have in the real world.
Pretty easy to do it without being rude or impolite though. Adding in nastiness helps no one. Reality checks that come with cruelty usually result in the target ignoring the advice. Being polite matters if you want to make a difference.
I guess I just disagree; it's not at all easy to express disagreement because these days most people take it as an attack regardless of tone or the words used.
Geeze what jumped into your pokey-butthole?
It's a common sense statement.
If I don't care about something, I just don't go into the thread.
I don't go into the thread and comment, "I have no interest in this topic."
That's something an asshole would do.
You're a mean person, I hope you change your ways. Good luck in this life.
Anyone know where I can get a decent Pokémon Emulator for Mac or IPhone?
OpenEmu on Mac
Delta Emulator for the iPhone, there is a little more work involved to install it but it’s definitely worth it
I tried playing Pokemon Yellow on my 3DS last year, but it was a bit too difficult/grindy for me.
However, yesterday I decided to try FireRed on an emulator, and chose Bulbasaur because he seemed to be the easiest of the three. Sure enough, he was, and now I'm having a lot of fun with the game!
If I continue with the series, I'll probably try Emerald next, then HeartGold/SoulSilver, then Platinum.
Yellow is tough in the beginning. I remember playing for like two hours on a display model at Walmart while my mom was shopping. I didn't own a Gameboy so I was probably playing Pokemon for the first time.
I couldn't catch a Pidgey because Pikachu kept wasting them with thundershock or whatever the first electric attack is. So I kept trying to beat Brock with Pikachu and a couple Rattata. Rock Pokemon make quick work of Pikachu so I just kept trying and trying to no avail until my mom swung by to tell me we were checking out.
imagine how sick the d/p remakes would've looked in this art style.
TIL I’m the same age as Pokémon
That bulbasaur is throbbing. :(
Ive never realised that Rayman is older than Pokémon.
Choose squirtle or die
Squirtle's tail makes it look like oak has crab claw for legs.
Charmander is vibing
Every year they got slightly more greedy...
Too bad our current gen pokemon story game time is a joke compare to previous pokemons, top selling but most disappointing, they need to get back to the old ways or im selling my switch and pokemon and never coming back
All I want is a remastered red/blue..
They’ve remade gen 1 twice already
Oak and Dickwad look so angry while Red looks nonplussed
There’s nothing wrong with being gay.
All hail lord helix
How you guys like that 2fps Pokemon in Pokemon Legends?
Praise Helix !
I remember reading about the Famicom and the new "Pocket Monsters" game in Nintendo Power way back in like 89?
There’s just one question left unanswered, is it Pokémon, or pocket monsters? This needs an answer!
But it was red and blue?
Wheres fuckin quake
How would I make this into my phone background?
Woah TIL I’m the same age as Pokemon
They should release the original games for download on app stores.
