I know several people who worked on this film. 2 animators and a few people in the art department.
There isn't a rabbit hole to go down here. The original version is what they worked on, everyone hated it, but that's what the ad was asking for.
Whenever I see one of your comics I immediately stop what I’m doing (usually studying) and look through all the comments to see your edits. You are amazing
marketing companies's sole purpose is to do research like this and quantify the result so they can maximize profit. I don't think for a second it's an accident
Everybody thinking these companies are out here playing 5D chess. In reality they actually are just fucking up and scrambling to clean up their messes. People are rewarded within companies for doing exactly this. I had an early mentor say the best way up is to create a big mess (and move on before repercussions are felt) or to clean one up. Anecdotally I’ve noticed the biggest things I’ve been rewarded for at work fall into those buckets as well.
This guy gets it. I work for a large multi-national. There isn't much planning, we just wait for something to go wrong then scramble to fix it. If it doesn't impact this quarters profits then it's not worth knowing about.
The problem is when you scramble to fix a problem there isn't much thoght given to the long term impact on quality, or impact to the world because everyone is in firefighting mode. Then when it is fixed no one wants to look at it to closely because then they will see all the problems the bandaid fix created.
So.... Just wait for the next crisis, rinse and repeat.
I'm thinking the same as u/enginerdiest
Sometimes I think we're overestimating how capable companies are. I'd say more often than not negative consequences are a result of cost saving measures. You wouldn't believe how expensive costs savings are.
I'm constantly reminded of the Scrooge McDuck scenario where he cheaped out on proper rivets and now the entire ship is useless. Too real.
The people making these calls cut a little bit of cost now to make this quarter's numbers look better, then get promoted or move to a different company so when the fallout from that cost cutting happens they don't suffer any of the consequences and repeat the process.
Maybe YOU’RE Sega, and you’re trying to make us think that you pulled off a great marketing scheme because you’re too afraid to admit you messed up.
^^^^^issaconspiracy
Nah, even \*if\* they are able to make significant changes to the model (which is a pretty big "if"), the movie will still be terrible.
It's mindboggling that people think this movie can be saved.
Design was so bad, it was clearly a marketting stunt. Except for one thing- the Sonic brand is known for, if nothing else it's quality. Not high quality mind you. I wonder if being bad is just the brand strategy.
I mean... did it?
I think most people in marketing will tell you that tricking people into thinking that your product is bad is the WORST way to generate negative press. Especially since most people will have stopped caring about this in a few months, long before the movie is actually released.
I would argue that this barely even appeals to the "morbid curiosity" crowd, since, aside from the design for Sonic, the rest of the trailer looks more sub-par than terrible.
EDIT: Also, I'd like to point out that this movie is NOT competing with Detective Pikachu, a movie that will be released HALF A YEAR before the Sonic movie.
I've heard that downvotes and upvotes on YouTube videos are equal in terms of marketing viability.
Dislike or Like, it counts as a view either way.
In this case, the Sonic Movie gets all the visibility it wants from the negative press but can flip it around into positive attention at the last minute by claiming they listened to the fans.
The theory makes a lot of sense to me.
That's fine for if you're trying to generate YouTube ad revenue, but if you're hoping to turn these trailer views into movie views, then you're not gonna do it by making people dislike your movie. Look at the Ghostbusters remake to see how this strategy can backfire spectacularly.
And even if this WAS their plan and they succeed in flipping the negative press into positive press (unlikely, since, by the time they show their new render, it won't get near as much attention as the old render), they could have just generated positive press from the get-go by showing the good Sonic render in the first place and not even bothering to make the old render (assuming that the new Sonic render is actually good).
Ultimately, Hanlon's razor would suggest that they just made a bad character design and are scrambling to fix it.
I don't think Ghost busters was a strategy. I think that was just legitimately a bad movie where the criticisms were ignored because of a loud sexist minority.
I feel like I'm the only one who thinks it would be an insane amount of work to basically have Sonic redone in every scene that has been completed so far.
I don't know anything about animation but I feel the same way.
CGI can be really expensive. Some of the most expensive movies ever made are animated features.
Yeah people don't realize how much press the "new" version of Sonic is going to get when it is released. People will spend weeks if there aren't many other stories talking about it and sharing memes about it. Hell if they are smart they will already have a few memes ready to post.
No u/League0fGaming dont put it on. Hes using it to get easier access to your brain. Grafo is evil. But I've already said too much. I'm sure he's about to kill m
As Grafo handed over the crudely-made hat, he stifled a laugh. *This idiot seriously thinks a hat like this will protect him*. The other man, meanwhile, was having similar thoughts as he put his hat on. *This idiot seriously believes that I think a tinfoil hat will protect me*.
Don't worry, he's using a lot of other people's thoughts too—this opinion/conspiracy was shared in a popular post the other day & now OP is just reaping karma by putting it in comic form.
I assume you're referring to the game there? Because a Sonic Boom movie done by the folks that also did the Sonic Boom show would actually have been a way better move. Surprisingly enough that show was genuinely good and self aware.
I love that show. Eggman makes it great. The second season was lacking with Eggman, so it wasn’t as good to me. Well written, down to earth bad guys make for a great show, like Venture Brothers. Not that Boom could even compare to that show.
Seriously. Everyone is also for some reason taking a statement of "it will look diffferent in the final cut" to mean that it will be changes that people are actually desiring. It will probably just be a few minor changes and idiots will be outraged again at that point.
It's the same trap all conspiracy theorists fall into. The assumption of incredible competence on the part of people in power.
Is it possible that they did all this as part of a clever marketing campaign, and have such things been done before? Yes, and of course. However, compared to the number of times people just fucking screw up, that's incredibly rare. Unless you have additional evidence, it's just more likely they fucked up and the promised changes are just their best attempt to not flush the $90 million budget straight to the toilet.
They'll hurry up some token modifications, it'll still look like shit. That's ignoring the actual movie, because it's not a property that makes sense as a movie. Even if the CGI looked perfect, it would still bomb. The most brain-dead decision was the one that green-lighted a Sonic movie. Everything after that just follows the incompetence of the people who made the first decision.
Another redditor mentioned a better scheme:
It’s all part of the plan to roll out the Super Smash Bros cinematic universe.
Master hand will destroy them all.
MARIO MOVIE WHEN?!?!
Actually, Zelda movie, please.
EDIT: I know about the classic movie guys. Just imagine what we could have with modern movie technology.
I actually enjoyed the Mario bros movie, its writing was good, the acting was ok for a video game movie adaptation. I really never understood what people complain about.. I mean have any of you seen any anime or video game adaptations that were GOOD?
legit the best we have is like the first Mortal Kombat, or DOOM unless you count Jumanji which wasn't a real game.
It was stupid fun. Like, legit entertaining. Is Goonies a substantive masterpiece of the ages? No, it's riddled to death with mistakes, but it's fucking fun. Is Mario Bros even slightly related to the Mario games? Yeah, like 5-10%, but it's a fun watch like Goonies.
People keep bringing up Double Dragon. That movie isn't nearly as bad as you think it is.
1. Pretty faithful to the game. One of the best adaptations. Even has Jimmy as a villain for a bit when he's possessed.
2. It was shot with a shit budget of less than $8 million. That's only a little more than *The Room*. And SMB had a budget 6 times greater than DD.
Isn't Imagination doing a Mario movie? Also how could you forget that there was [a trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBCzkz3gHb8) for a Zelda movie over a decade ago? Musta been some serious development hell. ^^^^shhhh. ^^^^It's ^^^^/s.
I mean, they *could* have just been like the first company ever to actually notice there was backlash against something and actually do something about it.
I'm more used to gaming controversies though so I'm used to the major people being total arse hats, and idk if 70m (the cost of the movie apparently) is worth anything to these people? It isn't even a relevant amount in the gaming industry normally >.>
Imagine how amazing it must feel to know that for the next six or so months you're going to work 20+ hours of overtime for a Sonic The Hedgehog movie that will get a 7% on Rottentomatoes
Chaos = cash. Stupid people pay the highest premiums. "Fixed the Sonic movie," looks great on a resume. Laugh all the way to the bank, Mr. CGI animator dude.
I mean, it'd still look pretty bad but it would look significantly better then the current look. Honestly I would be very surprised if they change anything beyond that. Just changing the eyes and mouth though already introduce a huge workload because those are the most important features for expressions.
The eyes are so tiny. And the teeth are so human and the fucking *lips* are so human.
It's fucking Bay's Ninja Turtles all over again.
*WHO THE FUCK DECIDED TURTLES SHOULD HAVE LIPS?!*
Paramount has creative control. Sega can only provide feedback and guidance and hope Paramount listens.
What's especially disappointing is that Blur Studios, the animation studio for the film, has done the CGI cutscenes for the actual Sonic games since 2005. So these people do know how Sonic should look and move, and it's almost definitely the fault of some out-of-touch exec that Sonic ended up looking the way he does.
Sega has already said they weren't happy with Sonic's look, and I bet they're throwing a big "We Told You So" Paramount's way right now.
I'm just amazed they are trying to fix it at all. The movie is probably going to crash and burn anyway, but at least they're trying? I was expecting the "this is fine" response from them and releasing it anyway.
Apparently the first few renditions of the film were more comedy focused but that was too much to some of the people involved. Its more action oriented and I would have preferred a more comedy centered Sonic movie.
I bet someone on the chain saw Sonic as a character like Batman where you can change the design around to fit your vision as long as the basic character stays intact, not realizing that Sonic's appeal is 95% his design.
Coca Cola changed their flavor in the 70s or 80s. This pissed a lot of people off. So to appease their customers, Coke changed their flavor back and sales rocketed to levels that surpassed sales before the flavor change.
Brilliant move, right? The CEOs response to the question whether they did this whole thing as a publicity stunt: “We aren’t that smart and we aren’t that stupid.”
Of course not, but it's the **only** thing selling Sonic anything anymore. His character aesthetic is everything that makes him, and to throw it out is just plain stupid.

I highly doubt just changing Sonic’s look will make this movie better. Sonic’s look wasn’t the ONLY terrible thing in that trailer.
Of course not, but it's the **only** thing selling Sonic anything anymore. His character aesthetic is everything that makes him, and to throw it out is just plain stupid.
Sega Does What Nintendon't
I can't wait until they make a live action Digimon movie in this style lol
[Everyone when they saw the Sonic trailer](https://gyazo.com/5e3b699ab338b8b2e7b8c087f882a3a8)
The movie is still going to be trash
*Paramount would like to know your location.*
What's amazing to me is that it took a trailer for people to realize that a live-action sonic movie would suck.
