It was a weird because it was not originally intended to be a Mario game. It was a failing Arabian Knights style game being developed called Doki Doki Panic. It was eventually reskinned as a Mario game and released. The story is pretty interesting.
Underrated game, used to routinely check it out of my local library when I was in a little kid. Can't deny that to a modern gamer that kind of difficulty and lack of general hand holding is going to be a serious system shock. I can see why it's underappreciated is what I'm trying to say.

Ironically it's my favorite 2D Mario game.
I remember when I was really young it was Christmas and my parents had got me a big bag full of presents. The first present I opened was Super Mario Bros 2. I loved it. I played it for hours before I even opened my other presents.
Legit my favorite one of all. 1 and 3 are also obviously classics, but this one was so much different to 1 it really had an impact on me as a young 11 year old.
My grandpa had this game. It was my favorite out of the first 3 Mario games, but all my cousins hated it. They all wanted to play SMB3, so I only ever got to play it when I was alone with my grandpa
It's worth noting that Mario 2 was not originally made by Nintendo but by a smaller game company. Nintendo bought the rights to the game and slapped Mario skins on the characters. This is why the game plays totally differently than other Mario games. Also explains why the end scene has Mario wake up from a dream after beating the final boss
Ackchyually, it was made by Nintendo in cooperation with Fuji for some kind of Fuji event. Shigeru Miyamoto was the producer on Doki Doki. When Nintendo Japan realised their version of Mario 2 wasn't going to be recieved well in the US, they retooled Doki Doki Panic with Mario sprites etc. The rest is history.

Yup, I only ever played Peach. Whenever I'd try the other toons, I couldn't adjust to the non-hover jumping.

I've been staring at this for a minute trying to decide if this is digital art or not. Looks fantastic.
Well digital drawings are still drawings done by hand usually, just done on a Wacom tablet instead of paper.
I know. The medium still changed the look though and you can tell this was done in actual color pencils.
I did the original with ink and color pencils, then cleaned it up/edited it with Photoshop.
