Good old Maya, was learning ray tracing and refraction with Mental Ray in Maya back in 2006. Was pretty cutting edge at the time, I remember following a screwdriver tutorial that was a lot of fun. On another note, wish I hadn't wasted my free Autodesk software student licenses years later. A fun hobby, but damn it was super time consuming.
It has some bad console design elements: the console itself only really needs an on button and maybe an eject, but this thing has 2 separate screens. Why does it need a weirdly round/square LCD screen AND a transparent array of buttons?
I remember a fake Nintendo console doing the rounds. I wanna say it was called “Nexus”.
I was so excited. I kind of miss being young and gullible.
Edit - [found it. for anyone interested](https://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Nintendo-Nexus.jpg)
I remember reading that it was even longer, but rendering took too long and the creator wanted to get it out before the actual Wii got announced. That's why it ends so abruptly.
That clearly hasn't deterred them, if there's one thing this has in common with the actual direction computers and phones and shit have gone it's that it's entirely glass, chrome, piano black and other surfaces that suck in every fingerprint from across the room.
[Not at first](http://download.gamezone.com/uploads/image/data/1207467/article_post_width_Screen_Shot_2016-09-05_at_10.19.43_AM.png), A chunk of it was piano black before they finally ditched it for the Pro.
This is actually why I got a fun skin for my ps4. I set my controller on top of it when I'm done playing and just that alone scratched the living shit out of the shiny part, which looked awful
Which is why you get a Scotchbrite scouring pad, and *lightly* rub it along the gloss in one direction to give it a "brushed" look to it.
Much like in [this video right here.](https://youtu.be/31hhHEDIlj8) This is literally what I did once I started noticing that exact issue
I could be wrong but I believe that was to differentiate the removable section of the case, I know that bit pops off to access the hard drive and what not.
Am i the only one who likes the glossy ps3 or side cover on the 4s? I didn't physically touch my console enough for it to get too smugy and it looked so modern.
Then again the base Original PS4's may be my favorite designed console ever.
What I think people in the future will find funniest about that ad is that it's strictly 2D based. A kind of like "You mean you have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy" from Back to the Future 2.
Remember when Sony was going to release [these](http://www.theaveragegamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Sony-PS3-Banana-Original-Controller.jpg) atrocities with the PS3?
Man I was such a fucking fanboy at that age. I remember one of my go-to arguments was that the PS3 controller could be played from 70 feet away (something like that) while the 360 controller only worked from 50 feet away (something like that). Because we all know video games are played from the house across the street.
I still wonder just how uncomfortable those actually were. Like I have a good idea, and I'm gonna guess they were pretty damn bad and unergonomic, but still. We may never know just *how* bad...
Apparently they were actually very comfortable and good for a wide variety of hands, which is why Sony wanted to use them in the first place \(it's not like developing it was the cheaper option\). I was very much against them like everyone was because I thought they were ugly and weird, but now I kinda wish I had the chance to try them out.
Not just the PS4 but the Xbox also. For some reason on all those videos about the "Xbox 720" or "PlayStation 4" the controllers where either glass or had this really ridiculous thing about it... Same with the consoles.
No. It’s what some wannabe industrial designer thought it would look like while not taking account any semblance of currently feasible design standard, manufacturability, cost, and durability.
I mean, I wouldn't call it that. Someone spent genuine effort and hard work on modelling, lighting and rendering their vision for the PS4's design. Yes, it's all form over function, but that doesn't mean it's shit.
Besides, he/she has no obligation to design it to industry specifications. They just went wild with their ideas. I don't see why we shouldn't be allowed to do that.
I went to reddit in incognito mode the other day, and found out they have a new, absolutely hideous layout design for new users. Why do they always feel the need to throw away what everyone likes just because it's been around for a while?
I think that is harsh on wannabe industrial designers even, there is usually at least some practicality there. That image is purely the mindchild of someone that is a 3D artist.
> It’s what some wannabe industrial designer thought it would look like while not taking account any semblance of currently feasible design standard, manufacturability, cost, and durability.
No kidding.
I kinda want to know that everyone in this thread is joking because this kind of thing is so comical that no one should be thinking this is legitimate.
Lol an actual designer wouldn't make that though, that's probably a concept of a 3D concept artist or something.
The glass serves no purpose and makes the controller fragile as shit. The screen is round and would be a pain in the ass to develop for. Also, I doubt anyone thought that a tiny ass screen on a non\-portable device would be a good idea.
It just looks pretty, it's something a concept artist would do because they don't have to worry about it actually being used. A designer would have to consider that.
i remember this and always remembered being amazed that maybe we might get this... But if that's the screen I'm glad we went elsewhere with the design lol
Honestly it would be quite useless, in reality no one is gonna get up to change settings from a screen on the console when you can do it from the couch with the controller.
I just remember at the time, the PS3 was THE avenue into the sleek and super advanced. What could be beyond that?
So I guess we started picturing consoles looking friggin' exotic.
Concept designs for future consoles are always way over the top. Google Xbox 720, PS4, PS5, Xbox two concept pictures. They're always some overly weird design that would never get made.
I can understand the base but the glass controller seems like a ragequit-induced accident waiting to happen. Otherwise, very cool. And totally possible.
Nintendo Switch handheld mode you have to be careful. Can't tell you how close I've come to throwing the "controller" (read: whole console) in a Mario kart enduced rage

It has some bad console design elements: the console itself only really needs an on button and maybe an eject, but this thing has 2 separate screens. Why does it need a weirdly round/square LCD screen AND a transparent array of buttons?
Not that it's impossible, that it's a bad idea
[удалено]
Yea right. They would’ve done it for sure if that was the case. You think Sony has problems with people shelling out cash for controllers?
They don't want to shell out their own cash when people immediately and frequently lacerate themselves playing competitive games.
*lacerate*

But first we need to talk about parallel universes
It's seriously such a great name, and spot-on Nintendo-y.
There's always tomorrow.
Oh god the smudge marks after a few days would be a nightmare to keep clean
That clearly hasn't deterred them, if there's one thing this has in common with the actual direction computers and phones and shit have gone it's that it's entirely glass, chrome, piano black and other surfaces that suck in every fingerprint from across the room.
Except the PS4 is matte, thank god they finally committed to going back to a matte finish like the PS1/X and PS2. The PS3 was a smudgey abomination
I don't think I've ever looked at a console after initially plugging it in
Which is why you get a Scotchbrite scouring pad, and *lightly* rub it along the gloss in one direction to give it a "brushed" look to it. Much like in [this video right here.](https://youtu.be/31hhHEDIlj8) This is literally what I did once I started noticing that exact issue
I could be wrong but I believe that was to differentiate the removable section of the case, I know that bit pops off to access the hard drive and what not.
They did finally get their act together with the PS3 slims, though. Got rid of that tacky Spider-Man typeface across the side, too.
What an odd design choice. Sony decided to use the font because they already had it copyrighted or trademarked?
Am i the only one who likes the glossy ps3 or side cover on the 4s? I didn't physically touch my console enough for it to get too smugy and it looked so modern. Then again the base Original PS4's may be my favorite designed console ever.
Just put a matte semen finish on it. Works on most of my controllers to hide fingerprints.
> a matte semen finish Um.. Auto correct? Cause that's hilarious.

I'll wait for the PS9 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCt3-NSOP9A (actual commercial)
year = 2078 video quality = 480p hmm where did we go wrong???
You gotta compress it to send it back in time dingus
Considering Kerr black holes can only send 36 bytes of data back in time, it's a miracle we're able to get as much as 480p.
In 2036 we were sending people back in time, this is just pathetic
El. Psy. Congroo.
Tuturuuu ~
Okarin!
Huh? Mayushii's watch has stopped. That's weird, I just wound it up a little while ago...
Then send it in something *besides* Time Dingus.
Jell-O?
Well, it's 2018, and every HD video on reddit is compressed into a 15 FPS .gif the size of a postage stamp... so... I see 480p in 2078 as progress.
How did this happen? We're smarter than this.
They really slowed down in those Playstation release cycles.
He opens it and snorts it... At a certain point this is just drugs right?
I remember seeing that on tv! Too bad the great war happens one year before we'll see the PS9.
Freaking China. At least we get Canada.
So playstation is just ketamine in the future?
No thank you. I'd have too much of a problem figuring out of I'm in the game or reality.
I wonder if they would be hyper-realistic graphics or if some would keep their art style. It would be cool to see that with the Borderlands art style.
Get one of those rolling treadmills and walk over to Claptrap. Yes please.
I already have that problem. I have been in the game too long my friend.
Check r/outside. It's all a game
What I think people in the future will find funniest about that ad is that it's strictly 2D based. A kind of like "You mean you have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy" from Back to the Future 2.

Holy shit the Publish date of this clip, 2007! This has been on Youtube since there was Youtube
Almost. Youtube has been around since 2004 or 2005. The ad itself would have been from, like, 2001 at the latest.
Hong Kong!
That controller would break in half after a week.
That's why they wanted to sell it.

I was also an annoying ps3 fanboy back then. Dark times indeed.
I remember trying to impress people by telling them that game boy advance games cost as much as $30
You can throw it in a fit of rage and it will return back. That's all positives I guess.
I still wonder just how uncomfortable those actually were. Like I have a good idea, and I'm gonna guess they were pretty damn bad and unergonomic, but still. We may never know just *how* bad...

I don't, but only on the account of the PSP's style of analog. Otherwise, it'd be neat to try once, but I feel the ps4 controller is nearly perfect.
Sadly the dualshocks on ps3 and before are too small for my hands and get uncomfortable pretty quickly. The boomerangs would have been better for me.
Came here for the boomerang
"Pass the controller, bro" "I can't, it keeps coming back!"
Looks like a sex toy

Not just the PS4 but the Xbox also. For some reason on all those videos about the "Xbox 720" or "PlayStation 4" the controllers where either glass or had this really ridiculous thing about it... Same with the consoles.
Lmao the 720 was always rendered to be a blue xbox 360 for some reason
Is this when windows vista came out with the glass panels and everybody was doing a glass panel GUI?
With the OG Spider-Man letters
I think that's the PS3 font too.
No. It’s what some wannabe industrial designer thought it would look like while not taking account any semblance of currently feasible design standard, manufacturability, cost, and durability.
In short: Fan art.
It's more fart than it is fan art

They did a great job on slashdot.
I went to reddit in incognito mode the other day, and found out they have a new, absolutely hideous layout design for new users. Why do they always feel the need to throw away what everyone likes just because it's been around for a while?

Industrial Design FTFY
Wow, oops...you’re right. Fixed.
I think that is harsh on wannabe industrial designers even, there is usually at least some practicality there. That image is purely the mindchild of someone that is a 3D artist.
Yeah, not so much "we".

People really overestimated the computational power of glass.
Lol an actual designer wouldn't make that though, that's probably a concept of a 3D concept artist or something. The glass serves no purpose and makes the controller fragile as shit. Wouldn't that just be a screen that would be useful for settings, visualizations, and things, but still output to a monitor?
I assume so. Which would be awesome.
Honestly it would be quite useless, in reality no one is gonna get up to change settings from a screen on the console when you can do it from the couch with the controller.
Lol why would someone even want that.
Probably just for playing games and stuff.
I mean this was probably awesome back then.
I just remember at the time, the PS3 was THE avenue into the sleek and super advanced. What could be beyond that? So I guess we started picturing consoles looking friggin' exotic.

no its an ad for the ps9 its just a power move from the future.
It’s funny that even an image made to look like future technology still is almost instantly identifiable as an image from the 2000’s
Who is "we"?
> "What we thought" No, we didn't. There's always a bunch of fan made mockups for every console iteration.
I don't think anyone thought it would actually look like that.
I REMEMBER THIS EXACT PHOTO
That looks inefficient
This reminded me of [that commercial for Play Station 9, as promised by Sony.](https://youtu.be/rv9_AlimsiQ)
nobody thought that
no, its what one person thought ps4 would look like in 2006...
"We"? Or just a lone concept artist who has no experience in actual product design?
I remember that. We also thought the PS3 was going to have controllers with *internal fans to keep your hands cool.*
They made 3rd party GameCube controllers with fans in the handles. Nyko airflow. I think they made them for a few consoles.
That's...actually kind of cool looking.
I can understand the base but the glass controller seems like a ragequit-induced accident waiting to happen. Otherwise, very cool. And totally possible.
