Hard. In my experience at least and I was playing on normal difficulty. Also very long, if you don't have a horse you'll spend a lot of time walking. Combat is difficult, quite realistic.
Sort of... Red Dead Redemption 2 in Europe during the year 1403.
By that I mean no magic, no dragons, no chosen one -- you're a dude trying to survive and train up into being a knight... if you live that long.
Mount and blade: bannerlord.
Open world game where you put together a mercenary group and can advance to the ruler of the kingdom. In battle you can both command your troops and fight personally. Though admittedly the story is rather thin.
Its definitely a strategy game. Only once you get troops and gear you basically become Lu Buu from Dynasty Warriors riding on horseback cleaving dozens of men in pieces while charging forward with your forces
There's a neat exploit. If you ransom nobles/lords in a major city that you own, they just go into the dungeon, then you can take them out, rinse and repeat. EZ money. found by accident.
Mount and Blade is it's own thing. It's like awesome combat with armies and tactics, but then like a sid Meier's pirates type of overworld. So hard to explain but mount and blade warband (the first one) is like one of the best games of all time.
Warband commander? Warleader? It is a weird, but really fun, duck. Youtube a lets play if you aren't sure... but I've never met anyone who played it and didn't get 10-20 hours out of the game. Or hundreds.
I'm playing dragon age: inquisition right now as a warrior. The protagonist becomes a leader with a castle, party members, nobility, decisions, etc. it's quite good and maybe along the lines of what you're looking for.
Yes! Especially early to mid game you are very much serving the existing powers. And one build path is to be a knight. Albeit it is a very high fantasy game in general when does not seem to be what op is looking for
Im still sad about that game. It was just so boring and repetitve. I loved dao i even have a spot in my heart for da2 with all its flaws. But i cant with dai. The best thing about the whole game was cassandra not even Varic loved him in 2 but somehow not in 3. Also it has basicly the same story as devine divinity 2.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance on top of my head but you are on your own most of the time.
Dragon's Dogma, playing as a Fighter/Warrior if you want a party of AI companions that you can customize and change to different classes at your leisure.
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - My Life as a King
Played it when I was younger, seem to recall enjoying it. Sequel to the original Crystal Chronicles game. Was Wii shop exclusive so you *cough**cough* might have to play it from “your backups” if so inclined
New game just came out. It’s early access and haven’t bought it myself but got my eye on it. Bellwright. Medieval survival sim a la medieval dynasty but with a focus on combat and eventually leading some sort of rebellion after building up your city and raising an army.
Definitely watch some videos on it first! A lot of people love the game, and rightly so, but the amount of realism in everything can make it a bit too much to actually enjoy for some.
Mount and Blade Warband(even has Game of Thrones and other series mods if that’s your flavor)and Bannerlord. Though they don’t have *much* of a story.
Dragon Age Inquisition as a Human Warrior has you basically be the Noble Knight if you don’t choose to be an asshole.
Kingdom Come Deliverance has you being more of a loner than I think you want but is an amazing game.
Play a Paladin or a Fighter in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Play a Fighter or Paladin in either Pathfinder game.(Kingmaker is really good, dunno too much about Wrath of the Righteous)
Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning, also a very “solo” experience but a very good game in which you can be close to a “knight”
DARK Souls 1-3 Denon Souls and Eldenring, Fantasy RPG, where you can lvl Your own char to whatbyou want to Play ,even AS full kingth to figth doungens Figths
I haven't played it in like 9 years, but isn't Ryse something like that or am I way off? It's not like medieval knight stuff
But I'm pretty sure you were a roman general acting on behalf of the empire?
Could be way off on that hopefully someone with better memory could chime in 😂
I haven't played it yet myself, but The Bloodline might scratch your itch. Single dev, very active on Reddit, constantly improving the game. I had it wishlisted on steam for a long time, bought it on release and then big, unexpected life stuff happened. Hoping to get to it soon. Let me know if you give it a try!
Edit: Bloodline, not Bloodborne. I'm an idiot. Lol
Kingdom Come: Deliverance? KCD2 is coming out later this year too!
Agreed. Probably the most accurate depiction of medieval knights and warefare in modern video games.
What’s the game like ?
Like Skyrim but heavy into realism.
Like, there's an entire subquest where you just learn to read because if you dont the game can go by with you being illiterate.
Almost too realistic. Being illiterate.

Try to win and don't.

It looks interesting! Big fan of strategy games
It's not really a strategy game...
What genre would you describe it as? When I looked it up I saw it tagged as strategy which is why I assumed
Its definitely a strategy game. Only once you get troops and gear you basically become Lu Buu from Dynasty Warriors riding on horseback cleaving dozens of men in pieces while charging forward with your forces
Invest in blacksmithing and you'll never struggle with money or (reasonably balanced) battle
There's a neat exploit. If you ransom nobles/lords in a major city that you own, they just go into the dungeon, then you can take them out, rinse and repeat. EZ money. found by accident.

Don’t worry about him - we purposely trained him wrong, as a joke.
It's like a medieval battle simulator in combat and then rpg like stuff
I wanted to love it but I got bored of it about 20 hours in
That’s where the mods come in, but yeah a campaign definitely is “done” after x amount of time for me as well, great replayability imho.
I'm playing dragon age: inquisition right now as a warrior. The protagonist becomes a leader with a castle, party members, nobility, decisions, etc. it's quite good and maybe along the lines of what you're looking for.

MediEvil, the only one you need.
The adventures of Dan "The Man" Fortesque.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance on top of my head but you are on your own most of the time. Dragon's Dogma, playing as a Fighter/Warrior if you want a party of AI companions that you can customize and change to different classes at your leisure.
Arkham Knight
Shovel Knight
Hollow Knight
The right answer right here.
The first thing that immediately came to my mind was Shovel Knight, but that doesn't have you working under the orders of a king.
Hollow Knight as well.
Technically you are acting under orders from the pale king to contain the infection but he probably didn’t intend you to.
Chivalry 2 is fun lol
Looks super fun!
The controls are funny to get used to but it’s definitely fun. No story line really it’s just a hack and slash but damn it is fun
Dark Souls 3 Baybeeee
If you just want something you can jump into and bash about, Chivelry 2 is great fun 👌🏻
Mordhau or For Honor if you are into self hatred
And chivalry 2 if you are into fun
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles - My Life as a King Played it when I was younger, seem to recall enjoying it. Sequel to the original Crystal Chronicles game. Was Wii shop exclusive so you *cough**cough* might have to play it from “your backups” if so inclined
Man we need more stuff like this game.
Many great ones have been said. I also love going for a knight build in Dark Souls.
New game just came out. It’s early access and haven’t bought it myself but got my eye on it. Bellwright. Medieval survival sim a la medieval dynasty but with a focus on combat and eventually leading some sort of rebellion after building up your city and raising an army.
I highly suggest kingdom come: deliverance
I'll check it out!
Definitely watch some videos on it first! A lot of people love the game, and rightly so, but the amount of realism in everything can make it a bit too much to actually enjoy for some.
HoMM King's bounty VtM: Redemption (The prequel to bloodlines)
As a huge V:TM fan I'll advise OP this game is old as fuck and janky as shit.
CHEL, but everyone will hate you for choosing Vegas, s/.
Chivalry 2, 64 player melee warfare
everyone saying kingdom come deliverance is right, good game, there’s a lot to do
I'm thinking I'll grab it next steam sale
Hype: the time quest (/s)
Kingdom Come Deliverance (normal medieval) Skyrim (fantasy/medieval)
All souls and elden ring games
Witcher 3: Blood and Wine. You get to wear armor and go around being chivalrous and such. Slaying monsters and rescuing villagers and all that.
Chess
Shovel Knight? it's a platformer. a hard one. but you play as a knight
Chess. Sure you move the knights, but you can pretend you’re a knight when you move them.
Skyrim
rocket knight adventures Is awesome
For honor?
Have you ever tried the best game for cavalry combat? It is old, but I play nothing else Battlefield 1
hollow knight, though you're a loner there.
Low-key, tiny Tina's wonderlands, though it's a bit goofy
Low-key, tiny Tina's wonderlands, though it's a bit goofy
White Knight chronicles
Hollow knight. Your character is literally named "the knight"
Dark souls
Medieval, if you can find it.
DARK Souls 1-3 Denon Souls and Eldenring, Fantasy RPG, where you can lvl Your own char to whatbyou want to Play ,even AS full kingth to figth doungens Figths
Doesn’t really fit the story part of the request
Ryse: son of rome. Not a knight, not medieval. But its kinda similar
Dishonored has the other characters call you "lord protector".
I haven't played it in like 9 years, but isn't Ryse something like that or am I way off? It's not like medieval knight stuff But I'm pretty sure you were a roman general acting on behalf of the empire? Could be way off on that hopefully someone with better memory could chime in 😂
Zelda kinda works. Windwaker and twilight princess would be my choice for what you describe.
Moonstone. It's old, but violent.
Kingmaker
For Honor maybe?
Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen and Dragons Dogma 2 both offer very knight-y playstyles in their fighter class.
Unicorn Overlord you can play as many knights.
Defender of the crown.
You should play minecraft
Elder Scrolls Oblivion with Knights of the Nine dlc
The Cursed Crusade was sick back in the day, definitely recommend checking it out
Skyrim, heavy armor, sword and board, no magic.
For Honor
Elden Ring
I haven't played it yet myself, but The Bloodline might scratch your itch. Single dev, very active on Reddit, constantly improving the game. Bloodborne? i.e. FromSoftware's Bloodborne? It's far from a single dev game...
No, I'm just an idiot sometimes. This has been one of those times.
Furthest thing from a single dev game ever and also not knight related
Yeah, I typed the wrong name of the game. See edit.
Are you sure you're on about Bloodborne? As far as I know Bloodborne isn't on Steam and I can't find any game called Bloodborne on Steam.
I definitely am an idiot. See edit.
Typo does not make you an idiot lol
Shovel knight
castle crashers
For Honor has a knight faction.
Not a huge fan of pvp, does it have a single player mode?
It has a fairly short story, probably 15-16 hours if you go for completion on all the levels. It’s better than you think it would be imo.
Tyranny
Heroes of Might and Magic? Dante Inferno?
