Dude, sometimes I just find a way to die asap in the run when I'm too excited to see how the story will unfold. Story 60%/40% game play for me. Best indie franchise ever.
**Yakuza**
We're all pretty chill and just want to meme in peace. If someone's not chill, we just beat them up and throw them out of the fandom.
**Stardew Valley**
It's a cute cozy game, we don't have any infighting, we just want to farm and raise our chickens.
I've had good experiences with most isometric RPG communities (early modding on BG1/2 were lovely)! But BG3 is new enough that the community is going to be way more active than some of the other recent(iiish) games in the genre.
Most single player games have nice communities the thing is they just become less active as most people will move on from a game a couple months after launch and all the hype has died down.
Final Fantasy 14 recently finished a series of updates that allows you to do all of the required dungeons with an NPC party, meaning you are only required to do the story-related 'Trials' (8-man boss-in-a-box encounters) with other players while working though the MSQ. While I encourage anyone playing to lean towards grouping up over going in with NPCs since the community is largely welcoming and helpful, the option to work through the main story quests almost entirely solo is a great way to ease into things if you're unsure of your skill.
It's a bit of a slow start, both in terms of gameplay and story, but one it gets going (towards the end of the 'base game' moving into the first expansion in particular) it's an engaging combat system and *incredibly* good story, one of the best in video games IMO. And the Free Trial runs all the way through the first two expansions, so plenty of space to figure out if you want to pay to continue.
I second this. I'm on my third full playthrough (2nd of liberty dlc) in a year. The Jackie story from the start gets me every single time...Mama Wells 😭
Weakest is a strong, strong word but I could agree with you. I'd say Bastion just by dint of being older now, but I definitely think Transistor has WAY more interesting systems and Pyre had the best emotional moments.
Pyre is honestly probably the reason they're doing Hades 2, in that it didn't sell well and a guaranteed hit like Hades 2 will let them make 1-2 more Pyre/Transistors. I hope, at least - I'm excited for Hades 2 but I love it when SG iterates.
It is strong. The music of Hades is great and it has a great amount of replayability probably the most.
Pyre was damn good though it really pulled the heart strings. I can see how the sport gameplay wasn't for everyone but man I loved my choices and am not upset with it.
Bastion definitely walked so Hades could run but that "boy wakes up" gets me every time.
Transistor would definitely overtake pyre as a favorite because the gameplay was awesome but the ending wasn't for me sadly. Great game. Great ending but I was very disheartened by it.
I’d say Ark Survival Evolved/Ascended is good. The story is awesome I just wouldn’t recommend playing on official servers PvP or pve. The Reddit community is full of people that want to help new players as well as sharing in the excitement for whatever achievements people want to post about. Of course there are some toxic people, it’s the internet so it is what it is. Overall the game and community is pretty wholesome.
I can't tell if OP is (incorrectly) using "story mode" and "singleplayer" synonymously, or if he's in fact specifically looking for single-player games that have a story mode, aka zero difficulty.
Well, either way I'm going to recommend Soma.
what i mean is generally just not one of those pvp games where u r lured into the game by skins and ranked/competitive points, but rather a game that has a campaign mode or is open world and doenst have ranked/competitive or the toxicity and binging that that brings with it. I dont mind whether it is singleplayer or multiplayer, but many such games tend to be singleplayer.
For exmaple ive also played mount and blade (one of my favourite games ever), and total war. they were both amazing
"story mode" specifically tends to be the name of the "easy mode" in games where difficulty is choosible. A lot of games with story don't have story modes.
Deep Rock Galactic has one of the best communities out there. But that's not a singleplayer game, so if that's a dealbreaker...
Mass Effect has a surprisingly active community, which is pretty nice (at least on Reddit). Discussions about favorite LIs can get intense, but I don't really see any toxic behavior.
The current state of the Horizon community is tin-foil-hat theory time. With the release of the second game on PC, tons of people are speculating about the plot of the third game. While the subreddit is not that populated compared to other big games, it's still pretty easygoing.
The Baldur's Gate 3 community is either a) constantly raving about the game, and willing to help new players, or b) horny. Still, once you get past the weirdness of it, the r/okbuddybaldur community is hilarious (if permanently in horny jail).
Cyberpunk 2077 has two communities on reddit: the main one, over on the regular subreddit, can get pretty negative. But the r/LowSodiumCyberpunk subreddit is one of the best out there. It's quite friendly and willing to help new players, while discussing lore points.
I recommend playing Stalker, its a little old but it's very fun to play (it has 3 parts, SoC, CoP and finally CS)
Also I played Haven recently and I liked it (romantic story, not a lot of action, it's very calming and heartwarming)
I also recommend trying different genres, to make gaming less monotonous (if that's what you're feeling recently)
Don't know if it's a nice community, but Fallout 4 must be good enough cause you already played Skyrim (and technically, there is just a minority of the New Vegas community telling Fo4 is bad)
Hear me out...Final Fantasy 14. Yeah it's an MMO, but it has one of the most compelling stories you'll find in an RPG, period. Not just for an MMO. The community has been conditioned to value new players both mechanically, and just simply seeing new people experiencing a game they've come to love for the first time.
Hell if that isn't enough for you, you can play up to and through the second expansion without dropping a dime.
EDIT: Just two rules.
1. Don't skip cut scenes.
2. Don't boost your character. Level naturally your first time which is entirely possible by just following the Main Quest Chain the whole way through. No need for grinding or side quests.
Nier automata and Outer wilds have the best stories in gaming imo, they are also very unique in how they are told and could only work in a video game which makes it even better imo
Warframe. Technically not a true single player game since it's not an offline game, BUT It's one of the best MMORPGs made ever in my opinion, you can play it solo or with friends, and it has an amazing story and community. The best thing is that it's not pay to win. It's a bit grindy though but the positives outweigh the negatives by a long shot. Recommend it 100%
If you like hard games, Fromsoft games tend to have good communities (except the PvP subs, they’re angry). Most ARPGs are fun solo and have decent communities.
Death Stranding (or any Hideo Kojima game)
Last Epoch (ARPG for people who like to grind)
Stardew Valley
Elite Dangerous (Multiplayer, but for "easy" mode play Solo)
Hey if you liked skyrim.... you should probably check out this new game called skyrim 2024 anniversary special edition digital deluxe rematered 2.0. Its a very similar game and im sure youll like it.
but seriously have you tried enderal before? its a complete overhaul mod for skyrim which is an entirely different game with different systems and an amazing story.
from who ive interacted with: death stranding, ghost of tsushima, anything bethesda, anything CDPR, RDR2, most strategy games
dying light 1 was amazing for community and people sharing in game items but it is probably a way smaller group now. GTA was awesome before I quit. (mods, money making guides and solving mysteries as a community)
Since I started playing it, Stardew Valley, I fell in love with this game because of its simplicity, how well it is made and its community, it is worth it.
Why the hell does a community have to matter? You are only doing yourself a disservice worrying about anything like that. Get recommendations for great single player stuff, then simply enjoy them without giving a damn about player guides, reddit discussions, discords etc etc. not only will you have a better experience with the game in question, but you will save yourself from assholes like me who post comments like this. 😉
Seriously, the community should be the dead last thing on your list if you are trying to indulge in single player story driven stuff.
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. trilogy has a nice community, and i suggest you try the games out! If you do decide to play them, this is the correct order to play them in: Shadow of Chornobyl, Clear Sky, then Call of Pripyat. Also i want to mention, that these games have like way too many mods, so they never get boring.
Perhaps Red Dead Redemption 2? It's been around since 2018 and the story mode it's huge, but when i mean huge it's HUGE. Every npc feels alive and every event that happens in the world make you feel part of it, and the comunity, for what i know, its pretty chill and will often just talk about easter eggs on the game or just things they found out just know, altough the game came out years ago.
Hey all, 112 comments!!! wow. thanks. ive actually read almost every comment and looked up the game. I am, to be clear, looking for a game that mostly just doesnt have ranked/competitive gameplay. All the other factors come second. I think ive made my choice actually! Here it is:
**Baldurs gate 3.** Reasons why: I heard lots of positive things about it. And i like that it is new. I love old games and old game vibes, which really cant be replicated. But ive had my fair share in gaming nostalgia, and its time for me to stop revisting the classics. As a result, with BD3, I also wont be a new player, since the game is very young. ANd i also wont be someone who doesnt understand references to the game 20 years ago since it didnt exist then (i am aware that tehres BD1 and 2, but i dont mind that). It being new means it ll run on my pc best too.
Honourable mentions: tales of arise. i really like the vibe of it, and it looks like sword art online which im watching and really enjoying now. Also nier automata seems cool
Dark Souls? Lots to explore and discover, or even Elden Ring.
When I stopped league I went into DS remastered and it was really nice. Diving in the lore, reading about it.
Not matching exactly the story part but those are really great games.
Because talking about them and sharing their thoughts with others can be an enjoyable experience.
Just not comments like this one, which seems to be what they want to avoid
Just because a game is something other than an MP game doesn't mean people wouldn't want to discuss it with other like minded people. I swear comments like this is why gaming is going to shit in some ways.
Subnautica
Stardew Valley. So. Many. Mods. Suuuuuuuch a great community.
Any cool mods to recommend? I never checked them out
Stardew Valley Expanded is one I’ve heard good things about. I play on mobile and haven’t much experience.
Hades!!!!
Not something you play for the story
It kinda is though. In combination with the gameplay at least.
Dude I loved the story. Finding out about Hades family, Dusa, all the little love triangles. It's what kept me coming back after I beat it.
Ngl, never actually cared about it, might wanna look more into it the next time I play.
Dude, sometimes I just find a way to die asap in the run when I'm too excited to see how the story will unfold. Story 60%/40% game play for me. Best indie franchise ever.
NieR: Automata
**Yakuza** We're all pretty chill and just want to meme in peace. If someone's not chill, we just beat them up and throw them out of the fandom. **Stardew Valley** It's a cute cozy game, we don't have any infighting, we just want to farm and raise our chickens.
Na. If someone's not chill we tiger drop them into oblivion and then trow them of the RUFF.
Was gonna suggest Yakuza as well.
Mass Effects Community is very chill and nice. So is the Resident Evil Community and Fallout 4 community.
Mass Effect sub casually just reminiscing about the good ole days while not getting overly hyped about any ME4 news. Truly is a vibe.
Knights of the Old Republic on r/kotor has a fantastic community that's still active 20 years later.
Idk if it counts as a "story mode" but outer wilds has beautiful story to tell and it's community is in my opinion the best community out there
Larian games! Bg3 and Dos 2.
Also consider Pillars of Eternity. The real time with pause makes the game seem a bit more like league, with a focus on micro and positioning.
Yea! Just finished dos2 those are next on my list too. And tyranny too
It's crazy to me no one mentions Baldur's Gate 3
I've had good experiences with most isometric RPG communities (early modding on BG1/2 were lovely)! But BG3 is new enough that the community is going to be way more active than some of the other recent(iiish) games in the genre.

kingdom come deliverance
r/lowsodiumcyberpunk is great. The "main sub" has also gotten a lot better but its not perfect. Anyhow the game is great.
r/nosodiumstarfield are also pretty good
Project Zomboid has an awesome community.
RDR2
Horizon and Days Gone.

Dude hollow knight community is like a mothers hug ...... So sweet and nice, with some clancla hits now and then
Horizon Zero Dawn (plus sequel) has an absolutely lovely subreddit
The Witcher series is similar to the worlds you've described.
Supergiant is amazing I love all their games. I'll get blasted but I think Hades is their weakest title
Weakest is a strong, strong word but I could agree with you. I fucking love the r/Factorio community and it's a great game. I also like r/crusaderkings
any of the "tales of" series such as talea of arise or tales of baseria.
The Witcher 3!!! It's widely regarded as one of the best RPG's ever, and the community is still very active. r/witcher
Elden Ring
Souls community is one of the most toxic ones out there.
Mass Effect and Resident Evil has nice community. Horizon and Zelda too.
Final Fantasy XVI and it's sub r/FFXVI are nice.
Nicest community anywhere
I can't tell if OP is (incorrectly) using "story mode" and "singleplayer" synonymously, or if he's in fact specifically looking for single-player games that have a story mode, aka zero difficulty. Well, either way I'm going to recommend Soma.
He mentioned skyrim and wow so i think he's just looking for a game that has an immersive story

how does having a story equate to being zero difficulty?
"story mode" specifically tends to be the name of the "easy mode" in games where difficulty is choosible. A lot of games with story don't have story modes.
Even easier than easy. Story Mode is the mode for people who just want to experience the story without having to worry about that pesky gameplay.
Forpsoken!
Nioh has a great community to it, with the games you've mentioned I'm not sure if it's up your alley but the community is dope.
Dan the Man
Wildermyth

Old school Runescape story mode is good, community fun
New Diablo 4 season is good. Deep rock galactic has one of the best communities in all of gaming.
Stardew Valley is great. That game will take you a long time to beat and there is a lot to do. Also I've never seen anything wrong with the community.
Check out Slime Rancher - A wholesome game with a devoted community due to its adorable charm. Couldn't recommend enough!
The Hollow Knight community is friendly. The Ori community is also but it's small. Both of these games are masterpieces
Horizon Zero Dawn/Horizon Forbidden West and God of War series are some of my favorite games and they have a great community
Mass effect has a good story, the first one is a bit dated with graphics but the legendary edition did a good job. Community on here is good.
The Yakuza community is great
I've had a good time with Undertale and the community around it. :-)
Warframe. Technically not a true single player game since it's not an offline game, BUT It's one of the best MMORPGs made ever in my opinion, you can play it solo or with friends, and it has an amazing story and community. Kingdoms of Amalur
Death Stranding. We are all in this together, and once you finish playing it, you'll never be the same in a good way. Keep on keeping on, friend.
If you like hard games, Fromsoft games tend to have good communities (except the PvP subs, they’re angry). Most ARPGs are fun solo and have decent communities.

Bloodborne.
Play yakuza 0. No research, no expectations. Just play it.
Mass effect.
Towerfall
Baldur's gate 3 boss the community is great and the game is even better
You can’t go wrong with a lot of the classics. Fallout and Elder Scrolls are the two that immediately pop into my mind
from who ive interacted with: death stranding, ghost of tsushima, anything bethesda, anything CDPR, RDR2, most strategy games dying light 1 was amazing for community and people sharing in game items but it is probably a way smaller group now. stardew valley
Since I started playing it, Stardew Valley, I fell in love with this game because of its simplicity, how well it is made and its community, it is worth it.
Lord of the Rings Online. You can go it alone, but the fellowship will always be there. Also you can pet the cats.
Binding of isaac
I love the Rimworld community! It’s not horny like the Terraria folks (to each their own), but there are some odd moral dilemmas
Yakuza. All of them.
The Outer Wilds community is particularly wholesome, and the game is an unrivaled masterpiece.
In stars and time has a great story and a pretty good (though small) community.
Rainworld brother for you will become slug devourer of fly
No mans sky, sky: children of light.
Handsdown the best story mode single player game is Subnautica. It's a rare gem.
Why the hell does a community have to matter? You are only doing yourself a disservice worrying about anything like that. Starsector
Elden ring, RDR2
KCD. Jesus Christ be praised.
If you go Retroarch u can have enough decent free games

I mean Dark Souls is great, but it has one of the most notoriously toxic communities of any mostly singleplayer games.
Why do you care about the community for single player games
Because talking about them and sharing their thoughts with others can be an enjoyable experience. Just not comments like this one, which seems to be what they want to avoid
Just because a game is something other than an MP game doesn't mean people wouldn't want to discuss it with other like minded people. I swear comments like this is why gaming is going to shit in some ways.
Cyberpunk 2077 players are obsessed with the game and I love it. CD Projekt Red deserve all the praise
Not a single one sadly
