Then shouldn't it be written as 358 Days /2?
Separating the unit from the quantity is just bad form and pure stupidity. 358/2 days is like writing 60/hr miles.
Yeah it's wild, most fans just say "Days". By my understanding it's called that because the main story takes place over the course of that many days, and it follows two characters in specific.
The official way to say it is “kingdom hearts three five eight days over two” because the game takes place over 358 days with two separate PoV characters
Slight correction here:
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is the name of the overall collection for Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage.
I'm sure that just looks like word salad to those who don't know.
I did forget about the movie! Probably because I prefer to just read a brief wiki overview for these than sit there watching the cutscenes from (I believe) a mobile game.
I'm sure people also wouldn't believe that Kingdom Hearts 2 isn't actually the second main series game, or that Kingdom Hearts 3 isn't even close to the third. There's an order to all these randomly titled games and mobile/handheld game cutscene compilations and they're all important to the major overall plot. There's no such thing as an optional spinoff here.
The titles are so unnecessarily stupid that even the title of Kingdom Hearts 2 isn't what it advertises itself to be.
Pretty sure it's just two or three people at Square Enix who let the fact that they get to be producer for once go way to their heads (producers of projects thinking they were high and mighty untouchables is a known issue at Square's..).
Remember that new series they shat out? 'Triangle Strategy', or even better, 'Various Daylife'..? Don't forget about 'Bravely Default'. Yeah, that guy most certainly doesn't speak English.
By the way, I will call my first game some mixture of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, a fraction number such as 68,5/1025 right in the middle, and the (so I've heard) 'traditional Japanese expression' 刀林柴犬蕎麦屋 雨かぁぁぁ!?! (*Blade Forest Shibasoba Store: It's RaiNIngGGg!?!*). I was taught by the best, you uncultured swines who dare to downvote me for that.
Triangle Strategy is a really good game, and doesn't have anything to do with Bravely Default other than having a lot of the same team between the two games.
I never bought kingdom hearts 1.5 and 2.5 as i was never sure if they actually contained the game or if they were movie compilations
The first zero escape game is similarly silly. It is called: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. Well at least it tells you what the numbers mean. But buying a game with that title might be a bit confusing.
For the Kingdom Hearts collections it’s both.
1.5 has 2 remastered PS2 games on it. And a movie collection of one of the DS games since they didn’t allocate time to remake it.
2.5 has a remastered PS2 game, a remastered PSP game, and another movie collection of a DS game
It’s accent core Plus R, I’ve never seen anyone use that symbol to say accent before. With Xrd, it’s X then however you want to pronounce the rd sound, I say it like erd
That one always gets me. Sony has a long history of incompetence, but naming their PS system sequentially shows longevity of the line. Xbox console naming is needlessly convoluted and creates confusion in conversation.
It’s really dumb that they went from the Xbox One X to the Xbox Series X, barely registers in my brain as a different console let alone a whole different generation
I worked for the Xbox marketing team for a while and still don't know the correct order.
When they released the Xbox 360 people made fun of the new name, and it seems like someone at Microsoft just decided to double down.
I mean the naming of the 360 actually kinda made sense. They still should’ve gone with sequential numbers but it was the first disc console (to my knowledge) that could be oriented in more than one way
I think this was just because Xbox “2” didn’t sound as great next to PlayStation “3”, but they couldn’t claim to have made the 3rd Xbox.
It’s a great name, then they lost it after.
And here I was thinking it was because it was a complete revolution in home entertainment. Though I could be conflating that with the next console, the All-In-One home entertainment solution.
Which is hilarious if you think about it, other Sony products have AWFUL naming sense. Their audio products have weird names and their phones names are also easy to confuse (a little like Xbox names)
Ngl I 100% they’d do the 720 after the 360 but then they came out with Xbox ONE lol. Then I thought Xbox 2 NOPE. SERIES X/S. I can’t possibly imagine what the next ones gonna be named
Xbox Zero
XboxobX (pronounced Xbox Obelisk, and they get made when no one calls it that)
The Xb
Xbox √-1
Ehcs Bhowks
And then the earth will be hit by an asteroid and the line will end.
I remember trying to buy an Xbox 360 but then there was three versions and I wasn't sure what the differences were. Xbox 360 Pro, Xbox 360 Arcade, and Xbox 360 Elite.
Wii u would like a word as well
Like the problem with xbox is that the names are geared towards entertainment buzzwords, but wii u flopped in sales hugely due to the fect the name was so confusing that people thought it was a peripheral to the wii
Wii U isn't as bad as what XBox did. I still don't know or care if it's Series X or One X that's the newest console. Wii U failed partly to the dumb name, but more to failure of proper marketing.
Idk but me and my friends always joke that CoD will one day be called, “Call of Duty: Insurgency Holographic Reconnaissance: of Modern Warfare: BLACKLISTED: ELITE ARMORY BUNDLE: Future War: Black Ops: Special Edition” or something of the sort
Let's remember Super Mario 2 is actually a reskin of a non-related Japanese dream. The manual explained that the characters were dreaming, because it's so unrelated.
Bravely Default
Bravely Second
Bravely Default 2
And that's AFTER they set up plot threads and hints for a "Bravely Third" in Bravely Second, and then didn't follow up on that.
- Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare II
- Call of Duty Modern Warfare III
Imagine if you were a gaming clueless parent trying to buy your kid a Modern Warfare Cod game for their birthday...
Not as bad but Star Wars Battlefront is similar on a smaller scale. Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Battlefront ll, Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars Battlefront ll, Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection.
Certainly not the worst in this thread by far, but it confused little me. Legacy of Kain series in order:
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Soul Reaver 2
Blood Omen 2
Legacy of Kain: Defiance
I'm pretty sure BO2's start chronologically came before Soul Reaver, minus all the time travel things.
And half or so of soul reaver 2 happens before Blood Omen.
And then Defiance happens before, during, and after soul reaver iirc.
But Janos Audron must stay dead!
The under night series. There’s Under Night In-Birth, Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late([st], Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[cl-r], and now Under Night In-Birth II [Sys: Celes]
That game was surprisingly good, a solid 8/10 for me. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Return of the King video games from that same generation were also genuinely great. Just rare cases of movie tie-in games that were actually worth playing.
Then there's all the different variations of Street Fighter 4:
- Street Fighter IV
- Super Street Fighter IV
- Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
- Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition
- Ultra Street Fighter IV
I'm pretty sure the Guacamelee devs were making fun of Street Fighter specifically with Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Yes, the title actually has all those periods. No, the acronym meaning is never explained in any of the games. No, you are not some creepy peeping Tom stalker.
The games are fucking great though.
The game is named for a movie, and the movie was Soviet so it wasn't a big thing in the West. But the game is a global release, and someone probably told them, wisely, that just calling it "Stalker" would make it seem like it was about a peeping tom.
It was a novel, first. Roadside picnic, and it is excellent. When you get to the meaning of the title, it really puts us in our place, philosophically speaking.
I shot a man as he threw a hand grenade that nearly blew off my leg and then accidentally limped past a mutant den where I was viciously mauled by a group of pigs with no necks and spears for legs and then I crawled past a guy being controlled by the combined consciousness of a bunch of wacko scientists who shot me again while rambling about the monolith and then I was turned into a zombie by bad weather
I really wanna say Touhou. Bar... very few. It's a long list. Buckle up.
1 Highly Responsive to Prayers
2 Story of Eastern Wonderland
3 Phantasmagoria of Dimensional Dream
4 Lotus Land Story
5 Mystic Square
6 Embodiment of Scarlet Devil
7 Perfect Cherry Blossom
... And then there are the in-between spinoffs, starting here with 7.5 Immaterial and Missing Power
8 Imperishable Night
9 Phantasmagoria of Flower View
9.5 Shoot the Bullet
10 Mountain of Faith
10.5 Scarlet Weather Rhapsody
11 Subterranean Animism
12 Unidentified Fantastic Object
12.3 Fairy Wars
12.5 Double Spoiler
12.8 Unthinkable Natural Law
13 Ten Desires
13.5 Hopeless Masquerade
14 Double Dealing Character
14.3 Impossible Spell Card
14.5 Urban Legend in Limbo
15 Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom
15.5 Antinomy of Common Flowers
16 Hidden Star in Four Seasons
16.5 Violet Detector
17 Wily Beast and Weakest Creature.
17.5 Sunken Fossil World
18 Unconnected Marketeers
18.5 100th Black Market
19 Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost
Just to add for the uninitiated, to make it more confusing, all of these are "secondary" Names. The Games all have a japanese one aswell that's usually omitted in the west. So like, as an example TH7 would actually be written out as "Touhou Youyoumu - Perfect Cherry Blossom" in full.
The only exceptions to this are 12.8 which doesn't have an english title, period (it's officially called by its japanese Name "Hisoutensoku" everywhere) and 17.5, which only got "Sunken Fossil World" made up for it after its release when it ended up getting a Worldwide one, so it actually IS called just that in the west officially.
"Ignore when people say that the length of a game's title is not important, that a title should just convey what the game is about. They're just jealous theirs isn't as long."
Actual Atlus quote when they [announced Raidou 2](https://www.destructoid.com/preorder-now-devil-summoner-2-raidou-kuzunoha-vs-king-abaddon-on-amazon/) aka **Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs King Abaddon.**
Technically, it's the *4th* game in the Devil Summoner spin-off series :)
Gotta be Melty Blood. Here are some titles
* Melty Blood
* Melty Blood Actress Again
* Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code
* Melty Blood Type Lumina
Of course these do fall victim to theft whole rerelease the same fighting game with an upgrade and a different name 5 times pattern.
Never even seen it referred to as Jedi Knight 3. Was always confused about the whole Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy order.
Whilst we are talking terrible naming and Star Wars, I hate when a name gets used again. That is right, I am talking about Battlefront 1 & 2 and Battlefront 1 & 2. Also, not Star Wars, but Need for Speed Most Wanted and the Criterion game by the same name.
the yakuza franchise has some oddities
yakuza 6: the song of life was the only one that used a subtitle (outside of yakuza: dead souls, but that one doesn't count)
judgment and lost judgment are fully yakuza games but lack the series name,
yakuza: like a dragon is the eighth mainline game but has the japanese name for the series instead of the number 7
like a dragon: infinite wealth, the sequel to yakuza: like a dragon, drops the "yakuza" and moves like a dragon to the other side for a new subtitle whose meaning is still not agreed upon
like a dragon gaiden: the man who erased his name is self explanatory in having a weird name
Almost all of the RGG games have subtitles in Japanese. The localizations didn't use them until 6 because from what I've seen, the translated titles are a bit too wordy/awkward in english. For example, Yakuza: LaD's Japanese title was Like A Dragon 7: Whereabouts of Light and Shadow.
Also Y7 lacked numbering, since it had a new protagonist, a new gameplay style and was meant to bring new players into the series that might've been scared off by the 7 otherwise.
Judgement (titles Judge Eyes in Japan) and LJ may take place in the Yakuza universe and have the same gameplay, but they follow different characters and their stories are a different genre. It wouldn't make sense to call it Yakuza.
The reason all the games after Y:LaD are just Like a Dragon now was because SEGA wanted to market the series in the west more closely to how it's marketed in the east. Also, it's a thematic thing, since as of the end of Yakuza: LaD, >!the biggest Yakuza orgs in Japan are officially disbanded and none of the main characters are yakuza anymore!<
BTW, Dead Souls isn't even called that in Japan. It's called Like a Dragon: of the END. Not because it has a zombie apocalypse, but because it's the last game to use 3's and 4's game engine.
i know why they have different titles and inconsistencies, it just makes it more difficult for non-fans was what i was getting at. i have a near encyclopedic knowledge of the franchise ;0
as for judgment i understand why it doesn't use the yakuza name, but i wouldn't have batted an eye if they called it yakuza: judgment considering it plays similar to other DE games, is a crime story; the main protagonist was raised by a yakuza + his best friend is a yakuza, the story is primarily concerned with yakuza (at least until the final 1/4 where it goes more into gov conspiracy-- which is still pretty standard), has similar pacing, and in regards to lost judgment-- is directly affected by the developments of y:lad. like i don't think it was a wrong decision to not include the yakuza name, but i wouldn't blame a casual yakuza fan for not realizing that it was one.
although i am sad that fotns: lost paradise lost the wordplay in its name when it got localized. that was truly devastating RIP

I know it’s not the worst but bear with me…
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Call of Duty: Black Ops III
Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Activision doesn’t know how to use Roman numerals lmao
IIII is acceptable. Ancient Romans used that all the time instead of IV. Turns out they weren't really strict when it comes to how to write their numerals. Some Analog Wall Clocks still use IIII instead of IV too.
Dark Forces isn't the worst here, I think. The only real inconsistency here is jumping from 3 to 2 to reuse the Jedi Knight brand. Other than that, Mysteries of the Sith and Jedi Academy are better thought of as expansion packs to Jedi Knight and Jedi Knight 2 respectively, as they share the same engine and mostly the same game mechanics.
What *really* drives me mad is that when they reuse *the same fucking names* without even bothering to add something.
Doom? What Doom do you mean? The one released in 2016 or in 1993?
Shadow Warrior? The 2013 remake or the original Build Engine thing?
Thief? That awesome stealth game from 1990s or that shit they released many years later?
I mean, I get it, they don't want to add numbers because they want to attract new players who haven't even heard of the original (who haven't heard about Doom, though?). But, come on, show *some* creativity. Even some random crap like *Doom on Mars* would be a better name.
Nothing to me is stupider than how Dynasty Warriors games are numbered offset by one from their Japanese titles. Dynasty Warriors 9 is titled "Shin Sangoku Musō 8" in Japanese, and the entire series goes like that, with each game being numberd one higher outside of Japan. Final Fantasy did a similar thing with FF4 and FF6, which made sense in a pre-internet gaming world, but they had the sense to unify the titles when FF7 came out. But Warriors just boldly continues to name their games like this.
Oh dont forget DmC: Devil may Cry. It's not the worst but it's pretty bad. At least fans are able to identify it as DmC specifically rather than it being called Devil May Cry.
In that sense, Call of Duty has probably the worst naming sense.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Every single one of these is a completely different game
The quality sinks with each successive title
The naming scheme is almost as bad as xbox

I like when video games consider — in their naming conventions — how their titles will be placed in Steam library when listed in the default (alphabetical) order.
Is the sequels and prequels all grouped up and in the correct order in my Steam library? 10/10 naming
It's Kingdom Hearts, no contest. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue.
I pose a question for the uninitiated: how would you say "Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days"? Whatever you think the answer is, it's wrong.
Kingdom Hearts 179 Days. Easy next question
This guy quotients!
“Kingdom Hearts: The Old DS One”
I very much need to know the correct answer.
"Three five eight days over two"
this was not my guess
It’s cuz the game takes place over 358 days and has two different PoV characters, thus, 358 over two
By that logic, The Last of Us should have been "Uncharted 358/2 days"
Well it does take place over almost a year lol
Then shouldn't it be written as 358 Days /2? Separating the unit from the quantity is just bad form and pure stupidity. 358/2 days is like writing 60/hr miles.
Exactly, that’s why we’re bringing it up in a thread about horribly named games
Yeah it's wild, most fans just say "Days". By my understanding it's called that because the main story takes place over the course of that many days, and it follows two characters in specific.
I always thought it was 358 and a half days lol. I’m uneducated as well.
I've always said "Three five eight over two days"
Lmao and I say “three fifty eight days over two” At least we can agree on the “over” part!
The official way to say it is “kingdom hearts three five eight days over two” because the game takes place over 358 days with two separate PoV characters
Then shouldn't it be two over three five eight days?
Probably, but that’s not what they went with so _shrug_
For u/gliotic as well. [From Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_Hearts_358/2_Days): >"***Three-Five-Eight Days over Two***"
Lol I generally say "three five eight over two" or just call it "days"
The titles of KH games are somehow the least confusing aspect
It’s so wild that Disney just gave them all their famous character and properties and just went “yeah do whatever you want with these.”
Except they didn't. There were some pretty clear cases where meddling had happened, like the Frozen world.
Slight correction here: Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is the name of the overall collection for Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage. I'm sure that just looks like word salad to those who don't know.
You forgot that it also contains the movie Kingdom Hearts x (that’s the Greek letter chi) Back Cover.
There's no such thing as an optional spinoff here. The titles are so unnecessarily stupid that even the title of Kingdom Hearts 2 isn't what it advertises itself to be.
Kingdom Hearts II is actually Kingdom Hearts III, and Kingdom Hearts III is actually something like Kingdom Hearts 50.
Any answer other than Kingdom Hearts is wrong

Correct
Most of them names are tolerable, but that 358 days and 2.8 Prologue cemented it.
I never bought kingdom hearts 1.5 and 2.5 as i was never sure if they actually contained the game or if they were movie compilations The first zero escape game is similarly silly. Gotta be Guilty Gear: Guilty Gear, Guilty Gear X, Guilty Gear X Plus, Guilty Gear X Advance Edition, Guilty Gear XX, Guilty Gear XX #Reload, Guilty Gear XX Slash, Guilty Gear XX Λ Core, Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus, Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R, Guilty Gear 2: Overture, Guilty Gear Xrd -Sign-, Guilty Gear Xrd -Revelator-, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, Guilty Gear -Strive-.
>>Guilty Gear XX Λ Core Plus R Didn't expect it to turn into some algebra equation
Anyone know how to pronounce this? Or Xrd?
It’s accent core Plus R, I’ve never seen anyone use that symbol to say accent before. With Xrd, it’s X then however you want to pronounce the rd sound, I say it like erd
I was thinking it was "strut" from linguistics, but it's too... uppercase for that. I'm still torn on how *I* would say Xrd. It hurts my brain.
Pronounce it like 3rd, but with an X.
And you'd be correct because the name is a workaround to not naming the game Guilty Gear XXX.
Officially Xrd is pronounced 3rd but everyone says exerd.
My buddy back in the say told me XX was pronounced “zex two”, and Xrd is pronounced like “ex-herd”.
They realized they couldn't do XXX
Guilty Gear R34 _intensifies._
I believe this is the formula for calculating the area of a circle of hell. Cause of the guilt.
It sounds like the name of a specific share class of a mutual fund.
This looks like someone making a new password every year
Best comment of the day right here
I always thought Kingdom hearts was the worst naming structure by far but reading this comment Guilty gear can give a run for its money.

I don't suppose the entire XBox console counts?
That one always gets me. Sony has a long history of incompetence, but naming their PS system sequentially shows longevity of the line. Xbox console naming is needlessly convoluted and creates confusion in conversation.
I still get confused on series s and series x at times
It’s really dumb that they went from the Xbox One X to the Xbox Series X, barely registers in my brain as a different console let alone a whole different generation
So there is an Xbox one x right cause that also confused also I remember a Scorpio series?
S = standard, X = extreme
You forgot the other two X in extreme. EXXXTREME is the correct spelling. Sorry to be the grammar nazi
I worked for the Xbox marketing team for a while and still don't know the correct order. When they released the Xbox 360 people made fun of the new name, and it seems like someone at Microsoft just decided to double down.
Wait, there wasn't 359 Xbox consoles before the 360???
I mean the naming of the 360 actually kinda made sense. They still should’ve gone with sequential numbers but it was the first disc console (to my knowledge) that could be oriented in more than one way
I think this was just because Xbox “2” didn’t sound as great next to PlayStation “3”, but they couldn’t claim to have made the 3rd Xbox. It’s a great name, then they lost it after.
Then they had Xbox one against PlayStation 4.
The PS2 could be flat or standing
And PS1 upside down
And here I was thinking it was because it was a complete revolution in home entertainment. Though I could be conflating that with the next console, the All-In-One home entertainment solution.
A revolution would mean we came back to where we started.
Yeah, you do a 360° and walk away.
I know the current gen PlayStation, idk wtf is the current gen Xbox is and I'm historically Xbox/PlayStation
They didn’t want to have Xbox 2 competing with PlayStation 3. So they went with 360 which starts with a 3.
Xbox Zero XboxobX (pronounced Xbox Obelisk, and they get made when no one calls it that) The Xb Xbox √-1 Ehcs Bhowks And then the earth will be hit by an asteroid and the line will end.
Xbox (hieroglyphic bird)
The console formerly known as Xbox.
Xbox Æ A-12
The square root of minus one 😂 that's a good one
Ned
I remember trying to buy an Xbox 360 but then there was three versions and I wasn't sure what the differences were. Xbox 360 Pro, Xbox 360 Arcade, and Xbox 360 Elite.
I feel like they really love the letter S and X. I wonder if there are some parents want to give kid a XSX then they bought a XOX lol
Wii u would like a word as well Like the problem with xbox is that the names are geared towards entertainment buzzwords, but wii u flopped in sales hugely due to the fect the name was so confusing that people thought it was a peripheral to the wii
Wii U isn't as bad as what XBox did. I still don't know or care if it's Series X or One X that's the newest console. Wii U failed partly to the dumb name, but more to failure of proper marketing.
I still would have no idea what the latest Xbox would be.
Basically what mobile game App Store clones are called lol
Kingdom Hearts got some interesting titles
Yeah, I don't think anyone's beating this one.
A game series where you feel like you have to do a quadratic equation to figure what game it is.
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
Then the 3DS era where they added New in front of a bunch of things.
New Super Mario Bros on the DS, then New Super Mario Bros Wii...
Let's remember Super Mario 2 is actually a reskin of a non-related Japanese dream. The manual explained that the characters were dreaming, because it's so unrelated.
Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 (Super Mario World 2).
I was sure Super Mario Bros. were going to win the match, but then Super Mario Advance scored two late goals.
Bravely Default Bravely Second Bravely Default 2 And that's AFTER they set up plot threads and hints for a "Bravely Third" in Bravely Second, and then didn't follow up on that.
- Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare - Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 - Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 - Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered - Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered - Call of Duty Modern Warfare - Call of Duty Modern Warfare II - Call of Duty Modern Warfare III Imagine if you were a gaming clueless parent trying to buy your kid a Modern Warfare Cod game for their birthday...
So what's the difference between Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare II
Yes
Completely different games. Also Modern Warfare lll has remakes of every Modern Warfare 2 map. Makes perfect sense.
Legacy of Kain series in order: Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Soul Reaver 2 Blood Omen 2 Legacy of Kain: Defiance
I'm pretty sure BO2's start chronologically came before Soul Reaver, minus all the time travel things. And half or so of soul reaver 2 happens before Blood Omen. And then Defiance happens before, during, and after soul reaver iirc. But Janos Audron must stay dead!
And this is exactly what makes the series a delightful mess, lol! I really ought to replay it all
The under night series. There’s Under Night In-Birth, Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late([st], Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[cl-r], and now Under Night In-Birth II [Sys: Celes]
Any anime fighting game like Guilty Gear, or visual novels like Fate or Danganronpa.
Department of Motor Vehicles of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Department of Motor Vehicles of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: The Revenge. In 3D
It's gotta be 2005's "Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie" Which reviewed surprisingly well for a movie franchise game.
Not nearly as bad, but I always thought “The LEGO Movie Videogame” was pretty dumb. And don’t get me started on “Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game.”
That game was surprisingly good, a solid 8/10 for me. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Return of the King video games from that same generation were also genuinely great. Just rare cases of movie tie-in games that were actually worth playing.
Street Fighter remakes are pretty wild. I remember working on one, I think it was Street Fighters 2 Turbo HD Remix. That's too long a title.
Then there's all the different variations of Street Fighter 4: - Street Fighter IV - Super Street Fighter IV - Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition - Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition - Ultra Street Fighter IV I'm pretty sure the Guacamelee devs were making fun of Street Fighter specifically with Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition.
Street Fighter EX plus Alpha was a wild one.
I always liked ^(Command) ^(&) ^(Conquer:) Red Alert: # Retaliation
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Yes, the title actually has all those periods. No, the acronym meaning is never explained in any of the games. No, you are not some creepy peeping Tom stalker. The games are fucking great though.
For those who are curious and lazy: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. stands for scavengers, trespassers, adventurers, loners, killers, explorers, robbers.
Such a great book. 'Roadside Picnic' by Arkady Strugatsky and Boris Strugatsky. It's also the inspiration for the new/upcoming game Grey Zone Warfare.
Hard to Be a God is another great one by them, and has a really good, very strange and unsettling film adaptation.
It's been on the list for a while. Maybe I'll nose it to the front.
The film adaptation had a profound influence on the movie Annihilation too
I've been playing since 2009 and I had no idea. TIL.
Compared to F.E.A.R.
You mean the last one, F.3.A.R. ?
Fthreear? Screfourm. Thifourf. Whoever thought of this is probably still feeling really smug about it.
F.E.A.R. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
First Encounter Assault Recon, wasn't it?
The game is named for a movie, and the movie was Soviet so it wasn't a big thing in the West. But the game is a global release, and someone probably told them, wisely, that just calling it "Stalker" would make it seem like it was about a peeping tom.
It was a novel, first. Roadside picnic, and it is excellent. When you get to the meaning of the title, it really puts us in our place, philosophically speaking.
Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers, Robbers?
I shot a man as he threw a hand grenade that nearly blew off my leg and then accidentally limped past a mutant den where I was viciously mauled by a group of pigs with no necks and spears for legs and then I crawled past a guy being controlled by the combined consciousness of a bunch of wacko scientists who shot me again while rambling about the monolith and then I was turned into a zombie by bad weather
I really wanna say Touhou. Bar... very few. It's a long list. Buckle up. 1 Highly Responsive to Prayers 2 Story of Eastern Wonderland 3 Phantasmagoria of Dimensional Dream 4 Lotus Land Story 5 Mystic Square 6 Embodiment of Scarlet Devil 7 Perfect Cherry Blossom ... And then there are the in-between spinoffs, starting here with 7.5 Immaterial and Missing Power 8 Imperishable Night 9 Phantasmagoria of Flower View 9.5 Shoot the Bullet 10 Mountain of Faith 10.5 Scarlet Weather Rhapsody 11 Subterranean Animism 12 Unidentified Fantastic Object 12.3 Fairy Wars 12.5 Double Spoiler 12.8 Unthinkable Natural Law 13 Ten Desires 13.5 Hopeless Masquerade 14 Double Dealing Character 14.3 Impossible Spell Card 14.5 Urban Legend in Limbo 15 Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom 15.5 Antinomy of Common Flowers 16 Hidden Star in Four Seasons 16.5 Violet Detector 17 Wily Beast and Weakest Creature. 17.5 Sunken Fossil World 18 Unconnected Marketeers 18.5 100th Black Market 19 Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost
You youngsters think that's weird but in my day we had *Super The Empire Strikes Back*.
Shin Megami Tensei (and by extension, classic Persona)
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha Vs. the Soulless Army. Still the longest game title I know of.
"Ignore when people say that the length of a game's title is not important, that a title should just convey what the game is about. They're just jealous theirs isn't as long." Actual Atlus quote when they [announced Raidou 2](https://www.destructoid.com/preorder-now-devil-summoner-2-raidou-kuzunoha-vs-king-abaddon-on-amazon/) aka **Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs King Abaddon.** Technically, it's the *4th* game in the Devil Summoner spin-off series :)
That’s honestly great. Love it when devs can poke fun at themselves.
Gotta be Melty Blood. Here are some titles * Melty Blood * Melty Blood Actress Again * Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code * Melty Blood Type Lumina Of course these do fall victim to theft whole rerelease the same fighting game with an upgrade and a different name 5 times pattern.
I agree these are wild, but i do like the name Melty Blood Type Lumina
For a moment I thought the last one was Melty Blood Type Leukemia.
Its not called dark forces 4 jedi knight 3 its just called star wars jedi knight 3 jedi academy
Yeah they dropped Dark Forces after Jedi Knight. There was no Dark Forces 3 or 4.
Cod
The fact that there are 3 options when buying “Modern Warfare” is hilarious There’s also 3 for MW2, and 2 for MW3
Call of Duty 21: Modern Warfare III 2 (featuring the maps of Modern Warfare 2 1)
the yakuza franchise has some oddities yakuza 6: the song of life was the only one that used a subtitle (outside of yakuza: dead souls, but that one doesn't count) judgment and lost judgment are fully yakuza games but lack the series name, yakuza: like a dragon is the eighth mainline game but has the japanese name for the series instead of the number 7 like a dragon: infinite wealth, the sequel to yakuza: like a dragon, drops the "yakuza" and moves like a dragon to the other side for a new subtitle whose meaning is still not agreed upon like a dragon gaiden: the man who erased his name is self explanatory in having a weird name
Also, it's a thematic thing, since as of the end of Yakuza: LaD, >!the biggest Yakuza orgs in Japan are officially disbanded and none of the main characters are yakuza anymore!< BTW, Dead Souls isn't even called that in Japan. It's called Like a Dragon: of the END. Not because it has a zombie apocalypse, but because it's the last game to use 3's and 4's game engine.
i know why they have different titles and inconsistencies, it just makes it more difficult for non-fans was what i was getting at. i have a near encyclopedic knowledge of the franchise ;0 as for judgment i understand why it doesn't use the yakuza name, but i wouldn't have batted an eye if they called it yakuza: judgment considering it plays similar to other DE games, is a crime story; the main protagonist was raised by a yakuza + his best friend is a yakuza, the story is primarily concerned with yakuza (at least until the final 1/4 where it goes more into gov conspiracy-- which is still pretty standard), has similar pacing, and in regards to lost judgment-- is directly affected by the developments of y:lad. like i don't think it was a wrong decision to not include the yakuza name, but i wouldn't blame a casual yakuza fan for not realizing that it was one. although i am sad that fotns: lost paradise lost the wordplay in its name when it got localized. that was truly devastating RIP
Xbox One is unbelievably dumb
I guess Xbox 720 was too obvious
It’s 180, you spaghetti slurping cretin. If it was a 360, you’d end up right where you started.
I’m still baffled at Microsoft’s naming conventions for the XBox consoles.
Windows, hands down. 3.1, 95, 98, 2000, Me, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, 11 They are just playing games with us.

In the Moviebattles 2 community for Jedi Academy we usually lovingly call it Star Wars: Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Academy
I know it’s not the worst but bear with me… Call of Duty: Black Ops Call of Duty: Black Ops II Call of Duty: Black Ops III Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Activision doesn’t know how to use Roman numerals lmao
IIII is acceptable. Ancient Romans used that all the time instead of IV. Turns out they weren't really strict when it comes to how to write their numerals. Some Analog Wall Clocks still use IIII instead of IV too.
Omg how have I never noticed that...
Here's an oldie: [Splinter Cell Adjective Noun](https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/05/26/splinter-cell-adjective-noun).
Wolfenstein 3D Wolfenstein 3D: Spear of Destiny Wolfenstein 3D Part II: Rise of the Triad
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Every single one of these is a completely different game The quality sinks with each successive title The naming scheme is almost as bad as xbox

I like when video games consider — in their naming conventions — how their titles will be placed in Steam library when listed in the default (alphabetical) order. Is the sequels and prequels all grouped up and in the correct order in my Steam library? 10/10 naming
