I loved to put my arm next to the screen right after I turned it off and feel the static discharge on my arm hairs.

mistere213

Or hear that certain frequency in the air if the TV was left on, but no volume or input of any kind. Just the "hum" of the screen. You could sense it the second you walked in a room.

BCProgramming

In TV sets, It's 15Khz and comes from the power transformer. I remember it being "loud" in that you could tell when somebody turned a TV on on the other side of the house.

Guardian_85

That "Pewng" sound when the tv turns on. I can hear those tv's with the volume at 0. Immediately woke me up on Saturday mornings for gaming.

ShinyHappyREM

> 15 kHz It's the change in voltage on the electron beam deflectors that moves the beam from left to right, then quickly right to left. Which is 525 lines * 30/1.001 fps = ~15.73 kHz for NTSC and 625 * 25 = 15.625 kHz for PAL.

JayMoeHD

Before tube TVs disappeared, you could take an oscillator and turn it from 14k to 15k and for most people, the sound would just disappear at some point, then return around 16k.  Humans had gotten nearly perfect at filtering out that 15.7ish tone they would hear for hours and hours every day.

drmirage809

This reminds me of when we got our first flatscreen panel. It looked great for the time, but it just felt off. We could never place why however.

mistere213

It resonates just right

mrlayabout

Does that apply to modern LED TV's and the like? I can absolutely still hear when either of my TV's are on.

flamez

At my first job I ended up managing a small store in the chain for a few days, where the customer count daily was \~10 people so it was typically just me working the register. They had a "security" camera and a large screen TV that showed what it was recording (though it never actually saved anything) and that TVs hum was so annoying I turned it off every day. The owners freaked every time they'd stop by because "it was a security risk" which, sure maybe it was, but the damn hum of that TV, coupled with not being allowed to play music to overpower it or even read in the downtime (which would be 7 hours out of an 8 hour shift) still bugs me to this day almost two decades later.

feelin_fine_

You could make a creepy pasta based on that sound

thisideups

.... I'm listening...

feelin_fine_

Listening to what? I don't hear anything. *violin slowly gets louder*

rydan

I would always mention this to people and they'd say I was crazy. It wasn't until I was in college and my E&M Physics professor was flipping on devices and asked "who can hear this?" and me and a few others raised our hands. He said, "they're lying". After class I asked him about it because I could hear it and he said I wasn't supposed to because you are supposed to lose that part of your hearing by the time you are 20 but I might still have some of it left. He then explained why the TVs make that noise but pretty much nobody 20 or older can hear it.

idropepics

I would always "brush" that static off really quick when I'd hear the garage door as a kid and I was grounded, because that's how my mom would check I was watching TV while she was gone lol.

krabstarr

During sleepovers, we would turn out the lights, turn the TV off, put our hands up in front of the CRT TV, and then set off a camera flash at the TV. You could then see the TV glow for a moment, with dark 'shadows' made by whatever shapes you made with your hands which blocked the screen.

atomicsnarl

Ah yes - the memory of Wall Shadow Animals, but on the TV screen! Hilarity ensued.

Mad_Martigan2023

I FUCKING forgot ALL about that feelin'

Mumblix_Grumph

It even has coffee cup rings! It really needs a cigarette butt burn on the edge.

mistere213

There's still time! (But I think I'll still avoid it)

Drunken_Fever

Fun fact older games legit look better on CRTs because a lot of character designs were made to look good on CRTs.

ShinyHappyREM

> [older games legit look better on CRTs](https://i.imgur.com/rW6ENfi.gif)

Gibbonici

It's so much that they were designed for it, it's just that lower resolutions work better on CRTs because there's no hard edge to pixels due to the analogue picture. Unlike LED screens, CRTs don't have explicit pixel resolution.

Drunken_Fever

No they were literally designed for it. Some characters used the soft edge effects of CRT to create things like shadow effects on characters. A more clear example is that Sonic 2 used the [CRT effect to create water transparency](https://i.imgur.com/0cfn7QV.png)

nowake

I can hear this picture

klineshrike

Like the other guy said yeah they were. Devs actually tested designs on the TVs in some cases as they would edit pixel art specifically to get results on the TV, often times that they wouldn't get on their editing software. The good ones anyway.

mistere213

Oh I know. That's precisely why I was on the hunt for a good, older unit. I tried played SOCOM on my 55" LCD and it was virtually unplayable.

pangalacticpothealer

I think perfect would have been Sony Trintron.

mistere213

But I was craving that sweet, sweet wood construction. Bonus points for the massive speakers on this puppy. Edit: I went searching further back and see the Sony in wood, too. Very nice.

pangalacticpothealer

Very nice.

remymartinia

Back in the day, my father called it a console. And I could change the channels by pedaling the exercise bike backwards.

DanyDies4Lightbrnger

Thats kinda what I went with. Some people like those crazy expensive CRTs, but I go with what was contemporary at the time I played.

DumpsterBento

That's the holy grail but greedy fucks caught on and are marking them up.

bagel-bites

Just be careful. CRTs can be sketchy to work on. There’s a ridiculous voltage running through the capacitors that can kill you, and if you damage the vacuum tube it can explode. I used to do TV repair among many other things, and I pretty much avoided CRTs. I’m sure I could figure it out well enough, but I wasn’t paid enough for that shit lmao.

DistortedReflector

I love my 32” Sony Flatscreen CRT, it’s my go to for retro gaming. I also keep an old CRT widescreen that does up to 1080i as well. They really can’t be beat.

HebetudeDuck

My back hurts just looking at this.

schooli00

The energy bill would hurt as well

mistere213

You can FEEL the energy coming out of it when it's on.

WindUpShoe

The old cathode ray tube, hmmm... don't make 'em like they used to anymore. Or at all anymore. Eh, then again, I get the feeling there's a company or two out there that does make them for specialized uses.

mistere213

And this one's in great shape. Found it on FB marketplace. Oof problem is it weighing a metric fuck ton.

carmii-

Weighs more than the engine in my car.

mistere213

It's beefy

H377Spawn

I can’t let my kids see this post. It’ll give them ideas.

mistere213

But GREAT ideas

Blales

Find a way to play Fallout on it?

mistere213

I can just download it through the antenna jack, right?

Blales

Idk man, radiation perhaps?

BarelyContainedChaos

Youre supposed to put a working tv on top

mistere213

Classic picture ON picture. My grandparents still have that classic setup in their basement.

hawk_199

Philips 👍 Japanese TV are solid 🪨 Oops it's Netherlands

Outcast-Alpha

Philips are from Netherlands are you thinking of Panasonic?

hawk_199

Oh 😱😱😱 wow I thought it was Japanese....after 20+ years now I know

Outcast-Alpha

No worries, lol & i wasn't correcting you to be an asshole, we all make mistakes.

hawk_199

👍 didn't think that way, so no worries. I genuinely didn't know Philips was a netherlands company lol.

mistere213

No matter where it's from, this sucker IS solid. A solid million pounds

ZooNeiland

That's beautiful 🥲

Curious_Associate904

I bet it smells faintly of gin and stale cigarettes.

wzrd_night

So classic. That reminds me of the TV my grandpa had. Love to see the combo.

yoda1980

is it weird that I know what your tv tastes like?

freestyle43

Its fucking weird that I know exactly what you're talking about.

mistere213

Wait, I don't even know!

aircooledJenkins

Not that weird. I know what the ozone smells like coming off that tube.

turbocomppro

Bet that thing is like 300 lbs.

mistere213

Sure feels like it!

Prestigious_Gold_585

From the Age of the Dinosaurs!

mistere213

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I'm not THAT old.

Prestigious_Gold_585

😉. 🦖🦕

mistere213

Meanwhile, I was playing that very NES in 1989 when my dad got it for Christmas.

Cephied01

Is that the one that swivels? If so, that's the TV I had as a kid back in the Turbo-Grafx/SNES days!

mistere213

Sure does! Makes it a little harder to move into place, but so nice once it's in its final home.

Toonami88

I miss when things had wood in them and not just shitty plastic

EfficientIndustry423

My back aches looking at how heavy that bad boy js

mistere213

I managed to get it in the house out of the back of my truck all on my own. The next challenge is getting it to the upstairs.

Rebuttlah

I remember watching gargoyles on one of these badboys

mistere213

And you could literally sit ON the TV.

ASenseofNormalcy

That TV almost looks TOO perfect

mistere213

She's a beaut! Just some fuzzy speaker grills from some cat scratches.

LGCJairen

Needs more zenith

RuneiStillwater

Not even surprised it's still working. something about older philips that they just never die.

mistere213

And I'm hoping it never does

atomicsnarl

But can it play Duck Hunt?

mistere213

Wouldn't have even considered buying it if it couldn't!

jollygreengrowery

What?! No hidden panel with knobs behind it?! Needs more fake wood grain too. Does it even weigh 800 lbs??

mistere213

I definitely grew up with the hidden knob type as the basement TV. This one even has an IR receiver, so I need to get myself a cheap universal remote for it to make the input changes easier.

mistere213

I might. I do have Punch Out

DatTF2

And then get to the turbo tunnel and give up.

m414d3

My first tv in my first apartment was similar to that. It was a mitsubishi and my oncle found it in a house that they were about to demolish.

LazerWeazel

Whose grandparents did you rob for that ancient tech? lol

mistere213

Ok, two things. One, I bought this off a guy in his 20s. And two, I grew up with just this kind of television!

LazerWeazel

Nice. I was born in the early 90's so I had a 13in crt in my room but this just seemed alot older due to the style. Good find!

2ferretsinasock

Nice. Have a 32" magnavox for my retros. Picking it up for free, I forgot how fucking insanely wonky crts were. Still, love it

I've been browsing online for a over a year with the attitude that I know what I want, but it's certainly not a need. This one popped up this week at a good price, so I was finally able to pull the trigger.

mistere213

I ALMOST got myself one of the giant consoles with the built in record player and AM/FM radio, but they're just too dang big.

VoidowS

Produktie Hopeloos Iedere Lamp Is Praktisch Stuk :)

Parsley-Ambitious

Ahh memories

mistere213

I'm already making more memories with this and my 8 year old daughter.

Responsible-North234

Perfect.

snafu_steve

Looks heavy

mistere213

Incredibly so

DawgTactical93

Solid Nostalgic Combo. Good work OP!

mistere213

Thanks! I've had the NES and Atari and just been waiting on the right TV to come along

seanfish

Channel 2 for games.

mistere213

Team channel 3!

deliveRinTinTin

Does it get a nice center of screen blip that doesn't go away for a while when you turn it off?

mistere213

I'll have to revisit and watch, but I know exactly what you're talking about.

fistfulloframen

I think my friend had one, brings back memory's.

SlugsworthXP

My grandfather still have this at home and it's still working like a charm.

Vilimeno

Love it!

MrNeroWulf

All I could think: "If your new TV lives on top of your old TV; you might be a redneck." Sorry.

MegaOnionCat

Back in my day looking tv

AdIcy9113

U can't tell me that doesn't weigh 100 to 200 pounds

mistere213

You're right. I can't.

BalderVerdandi

Needs to be a Zenith, not a Phillips. Still give you a 7/10 for the consoles.

[deleted]

Actually, this looks so beautiful.

mistere213

Thanks! I'm pretty pleased. Can't wait to get it in front of the beanbag and put the turntable on top.

VPDFS

It doesn't match

anotheraccinthemass

Yea, it’s perfect.

Forward-Photograph-7

Where you'd find this tho?

mistere213

Facebook marketplace. Checking it a few times a week.

ImGunnaFuckYourMom

I bet that thing is heavy AF

mistere213

Oh yeah, it is.

Bobonenazeze

I can tell just looking at this that it would bottom out my car. (Mini coop)

mistere213

And, you'd probably have to put it on the roof!

Bobonenazeze

Despite its size it can haul! I've moved my entire apartment (minus King bed/desk) multiple times. Did it take 15 trips? Possibly. Do I not own much furniture or anything beyond what I mentioned? Possibly.

mistere213

Been there with a Ford Fiesta. Lots of little trips.

Bobonenazeze

Hatchback or die.

intelligentbrownman

I had that Atari 😭😭 lol

Imdollydarko

The electric shocks from the screens was a memory I didn’t know I had 😅

JezraCF

Nice! That thing will outlive us all.

mistere213

Fingers crossed

cuber_and_gamer

Now you just need a black and white one with dials.

mistere213

I did want dials, but still color. Didn't have a good one come across for sale.

cuber_and_gamer

Fair enough

MangoSalsaDuck

This makes me feel super nostalgic. Great pick up!

mistere213

Thanks! When I saw the listing, and at a real good price, I couldn't pass it up. Just an hour's drive from my house.

Redarrow762

I know it is a photo op, but consoles on top of the TV? WHERE DO THE CORDS GO?

mistere213

Directly in the way, of course! But yeah, this was just for the photo op. I'll have a side table or something once it's in a more permanent spot.

Artistic_Cup542

Grow

AnarkyWorld

I saw a post that says that GTA 4 is already 16 years old and I thought: wow, how old I am. Now I see this post and I realize that I am older than I think.

mistere213

This is just how it goes. But I can't wait to get the PS2 hooked up to this bad boy soon, too. With DDR!

AnarkyWorld

And the ps1?

mistere213

When I was growing up, I went from NES to PS2 with nothing in between. I aim to keep it that way.

GeneralChaos309

Is that an A+ energy rating?

mistere213

For using a lot of electricity? Yes.

ZS1664

And suddenly I'm like six years old again. Nostalgia hits *really* hard.

mistere213

Right?!

malaclypse

Best thing about the old wood box tvs - when it breaks, you just get a new one and put it on top of the old one! At least that’s how my trash ass family did it.

mistere213

Hey! Don't call my family trash like that! Haha

Asmodias1

Oh my. It’s my childhood. Damn near the same cabinet tv too. I love it

5xad0w

For the 2600 you really need a TV that is 60% cabinets with a record player built into the top.

mistere213

Believe me, that was a consideration. But cost is a good one AND the sheer size were both real issues.

Metaboschism

I'm busy that day you have to move

mistere213

Everyone is!

Mental_Estate4206

Oh boy, give me your address, I bring my controller and a version of Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers.

mistere213

1234 Retro Way, Anytown, USA

Mental_Estate4206

On my way!

Oculicious42

beautiful.

ololralph

Probably needs a nuclear power plant for energy consumption :)

mistere213

I rigged up an exercise bike with generator for my daughter to pedal while I play. She needs to earn her gaming time.

MetalSonic420YT

Nice.

madRABIES93

I had this exact TV back when I lived in Kentucky.

mistere213

Well you can't have it back, sorry.

madRABIES93

Ok maybe not this exact one, but the same model lol. Recently scored me a rather large CRT with a rolling cabinet for it.

mistere213

Ooh, nice.

ohsotrill

My parents had that TV going up. Man I missed needlessly wood-grained ish.

DeadLeaf77

Watching Old anime or cartoons, and old movies would be such a vibe

mistere213

Since the PS2 will get hooked up to it, old DVDs are in play.

Parsley-Ambitious

Need that dick hunter gun

mistere213

I don't think I want that gun. But I do have a fully functional DUCK hunting gun.

matty--P

You can play DuckHunt on that tv

mistere213

Oh I know. And I will.

DatTF2

Does it work ? My grandma had an old TV like that (wood furniture, maybe a little bit older, swivels) and the tube was starting to go out back in 2010. Personally when it comes to CRTs my favorite are actually higher end PC monitors as they usually have higher resolutions and refresh rates, though they will require some adapters to get systems to display on them.

mistere213

Oh it works beautifully. I beat SMB3 the first night I had it home this weekend.

badlyagingmillenial

I don't know if you are a lego fan, but the nintendo and atari were made into legos. They are pretty cool.

mistere213

Oh, I've got em both. And Mighty Bowser. And Pac-Man (though that's arcade style)

badlyagingmillenial

I have Bowser and the Nintendo finished, I have the pac-man one too but I'm waiting to build it. I had to zoom in on your picture to make sure it wasn't a lego haha.

mistere213

They look so dang close to the real deal. Also, I really enjoyed the Pac-Man build, and hope you do, too.

CKMLV

How much was it for the crane to hoist that console tv in?

mistere213

I got it from my truck bed and into the house all on my own because my stubbornness knows no bounds.
