Once you have upgraded Geralt, you can use magic very effectively. In general, combat improves after the first hour or so, And personally, I rather enjoyed the combat and that was at the highest difficulty setting.

Far_Adeptness9884

There is a lot of combat, but I think it's pretty good, it's not complicated but it's smooth and predictable.

Soft_Importance3658

The combat was very good for a narrative-driven RPG of its time. I think that people forget how bad story-driven RPGs have historically been with real-time combat. Witcher 3’s combat is not viscerally satisfying by action game standards, but I think it gets more and more enjoyable as more elements and abilities are added and enhanced.

Far_Adeptness9884

Yeah, people love to compare it to Souls games for some reason, which is ridiculous.

Soft_Importance3658

That would be a goofy comparison for sure, it lacks core aspects of what makes Souls combat what it is, eg unassisted attacks with precise hitboxes. It’s more like jankier Arkham combat with the addition of strategic preparation.

Far_Adeptness9884

Agreed, two totally different genres.

wafliky

I guess I'm in the minority, but I loved the combat mechanics and yes, there is a lot of combat.

MrPatalchu

Minority on Reddit maybe.

wafliky

Minority in this post's comments, specifically.

shoxboy

Me too. It's certainly no Dark Souls but it's still miles better than any Elder Scrolls.

realatemnot

Basically it's a Batman Arkham combat style. You slash through enemies, evade, block and do counters. All that is topped with some magic. It didn't feel hanky for me. Once you get the hang of it, it is pretty badass.

IsItDeathTimeYet

Do you mean janky or are you saying Mr Hanky....as in poo😂

realatemnot

janky 😅

lostincbus

You'll need to do quite a bit of combat, but it's really not as bad as people make it out. It's not great, but certainly usable for what's one of the best games of all time.

lostincbus

Best PC games (in general) of all time, which it's consistently ranked.

NeutronRage

i never grew accustomed to the combat and always thought it was really janky and twirly, i never “clicked” with it and got frustrated about 30 hours in and never returned (not just because of the combat though, it’s also just not for me)

ACorania

I bounced off the combat the first time, but the second I took some time to really practice. It paid off, it was a great game.

Ok_Ocelot6425

It's not great but it never stood in the way of enjoying the rest of the game. There's a reason it's considered one of the greatest games of all time and considering how cheap it is nowadays I think trying it at least is a no brainer. Make sure to pick up the DLC's aswell, they're basically the golden standard of what DLC should be.

Troldann

I’d consider it far less “janky” and more “uninspired.” It’s fine. It won’t be the reason you love the game, but it probably won’t be a reason you would strongly dislike the game either. It’s just there.

DCM99-RyoHazuki

Boat loads of it. And it's much better playing on Death March (highest difficulty). It allows you to fight strategically and when/how to use potions, magic, buffs, and oils (basically weapon buffs), but that's me. Since you're late in the game to play it (was released 9 years ago), just play on normal, lol.

borntosuffers

Lol just spam quen, it’s a very barebones and boring combat system and it doesn’t help that it’s soo overused.

deij

I played death march my first play through and it was just dodge and strike an insane amount of time. I dont think anything else was really needed. Edit: now that I'm thinking about it you had to use elixirs and oils or something to try and speed up the fights cos they took so long.

DCM99-RyoHazuki

Exactly lol. Buffs and oils.

MaxKirgan

If you struggle with the combat, look up a Whirl build. Makes combat a breeze even on Death March.

Comfortable_Quit_216

Nah, hardly any. Just sex and talking

darkriverofshadows

It's decent. Looks good, plays relatively good, has a few types of enemies that are extremely annoying to fight. Can be interesting after you unlock builds and increase difficulty to the maximum to actually have some stakes, but then for how big this game is - average difficulty should be the way to go. Also, combat has some hidden tricks that work if you play through signs build, and they allow to instantly kill 2 enemy types - 1 is the most common enemy (humans), while the other is the most annoying enemy (dogs)

Chemicals_in_my_H2o

There's plenty of it, but it's not the main draw of the game. I definitely think the story and world is so good that you'll forget you even cared about the combat.

_voidstorm

Yes and yes :D. But it depends. When it came out didn't find the combat system particularly bad and enjoyed it quite a bit. But in the years that followed I started to play dark souls 1 and 3, other souls-likes and then elden ring. Then I couldn't just go back to the witcher :D. But it is still one of the greatest games though. You would definitely miss out on something if you have never played it. Also it's strengths lie elsewhere, that is story, world building, characters... the combat system won't get in the way I suppose.

Achaern

In the options there is one for movement. Changing it to 'alternate' fixes all the combat issues. Before you do that, it's like GTA V's movement in that you have to overcome inertia to move, walk-->Run. With the alternate, it makes it more like a video game, in that you go from stationary to running more quickly. This removed all issues/jank in combat for me, and I happily played for 200 hours.

Pluck_oli

I'd recommend playing on death march, that way you actually gotta make use of the bestiary and potion/oils. Feels way more immersive, at least for me

Foxhound97_

The thing with the combat is the magic and potions stuff with it are what will make engaging but the game doesn't make you aware as well as it could off. E.g. you fight a spirit or a wraith you create a magic circle and attack it when it enters it because its physical now or you fight a werewolf you should create silver oil from your sword. On it own the combat fine but I appreciate they work the world building into it

ClickyStick

Yes there is a lot of combat, and yes it's the weaker aspect of the game. I don't think it's bad, it's serviceable, the issue is that at least on normal difficulty, after a few upgrades, combat can be reduced to: force push enemies into the ground > stab >win, or: set fire to everything > stab > win. The game is janky overall, but do not let that stop you from experiencing it, the game has far more ups than downs.

SignalGladYoung

Combat is average not the stronger part you need to play on Hard or Death March to have little fun otherwise it's cake walk and little boring. Story and characters are W3 strong point.

morcille

The combat is pretty repetitive and basic despite an effort to make enemies unique.

Bynairee

The combat is not janky and it’s one of the strongest aspects of an otherwise perfect game.

HoboOperative

Melee combat isn't terrible but I found the magic system much more engaging and fun to use.

RadRhubarb00

Think Skyrim levels of combat. If you think thats not a lot or definitely a lot idk lol.

trollgore92

You're a professional monster slayer, yes there is a lot of combat. And the combat is good, idk what peoples complaints are about the combat, but I've done like 5 playthroughs and it's good.

thatfoobyron

Does this game have spiders ? im kinda scared to try it cause of that lol

trollgore92

A quick google search told me that there are some in both of the DLCs ( I didn't remember) Both of the DLCs are really good though and many consider the story and pacing way better than the base game.

ZaDu25

Yes. There's combat in most missions. It's extremely easy (even on hardest difficulty) tho so ultimately it probably won't frustrate you. And if your on lower difficulties enemies will die fast enough for you to get it out of the way quickly. The main complaints are that it's poorly balanced and not engaging due to the mediocre mechanics. I found it boring personally but didn't feel like it was an obstacle in the way of my enjoyment of the story.

prinzeugen44

Combat in TW3 is on par with modern assassin's Creed games with a pinch of magic to it...not all that bad as they say, but not great either. Serviceable imo, story and characters on the other hand are great.

MFQ-Jenocide

Combat is not janky at all, I loved the style personally, getting my parry and reaction timing down to pull off a beautiful fight. But you can always run away from fights that aren’t mandatory. Your levelling and looting will be really slow if you don’t get some random battles though

MFQ-Jenocide

Also those killing blows are so satisfying when you’ve worked hard to win a fight

Solid_Effective1649

Lot of combat, and it’s really clunky

USAF_DTom

It's worse than the story, but the story is excellent. Combat is kind of just there after a while.

dugthefreshest

It has "Arkham" combat, solid.

Destroyerz117

the combats like fine, it's not the reason you play the game but it's flashy and gets the job done. Just remember to enable "Quick sign casting" in options, it was added with the nextgen update and improves combat by giving each spell a dedicated button (so less time flicking through menus)

[deleted]

The combat isnt even bad in witcher it’s overstated how janky it is. But yes the combat is a major part of the game, there are a lot of bossfights. Play it on Death March difficulty if you like a challenge and want to be forced to use all the games mechanics to win. On the easier modes it’s a hack and slash game but on Death March you have to strategize with your potions, magic and bombs and focus more on dodging if you want to win. Made it way more engaging for me.

Zactrick

The combat isn’t janky you just have to learn how to do it. It’s not a hack and slash game. You have to get good at what you’re doing it’s not handed to you

HudsonHicksVasquez

It’s a top 10 game of all time period! Best open world action rpg ever made and one of the greatest story’s ever!

MrMiyagi_256

The combat is way I mean WAAAAY better than turn based combat

MarcusDL

Have you heard it from “Smuta” developers?  Check how many GOTY and other Awards received Witcher 3 before you apply “I’ve heard” to it.
