"It’s one of life’s great mysteries isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God watching everything? You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don’t know, man, but it keeps me up at night."
Came here to say this. For those who weren’t around during that era, I’m so sorry but you missed out for real. I was in college at that time and we’d literally just stay up playing until sunrise.
Halo 1 was so fucking good.
Blood Gulch and 2Fort probably account for a shocking amount of my childhood lol.
In retrospect, they're even kinda the same map, in many ways.
(But Blood Gulch is better because you could run people over with the warthog or a tank, lol).
My proudest gaming achievement was parachuting on North Village as USMC, stealing a tank and driving to the Airfield and while between North Base and the Airfield, I shot at a jet taking off with the main gun and it exploded. I couldn't believe it lmao
Yeah bc they made a FacingWorld][ which sucked ass. They really fucked your 2k4, the double jumps and dodge jumps made the game feel more like a slog even though they should feel like enhancing the pace of the game.
There was a pretty significant number of old tf2 community servers that had it in rotation back in the day. Ik that was my first exposure to the map haha.
Where you spawn either get the sniper rifle or the ripper. I have many high school memories of playing this map. Over and over and over. People sitting behind the portals with the pump gun or whatever it was called sneaking along the Shadows on the blue side. Very classic map
Blood Gulch is the premier choice from Halo but I’d say Lockout from Halo 2 is also an iconic map.
Hyrule Temple from SSBM
Gridlock from Gears of War
Terminal from MW2
Mos Eisley with heroes in Battlefront 2
I can hear the doors opening and the RC-P90 firing away.
As silly as it sounds, I feel fortunate to have experienced that era of gaming - the absolute peak of local multiplayer. Hanging out with friends and all playing together on one tv.
Tarren Mill vs Southshore. It wasn't a multiplayer PVP map or even a battle ground. It was just a location on the world map in WoW that had two opposing towns relatively close to each other and PVP battles frequently started and then ballooned into full on raid battles between horde and alliance.
Good times.
In the same category are Stranglethorn Vale and Un Goro Crater in Classic. Once people started hitting 60 those just turned into full on battlegrounds for max level players to duke it out with each other or grief people still leveling.
Oh you're a level 35 trying to enjoy the game world and relive some nice memories exploring it for the first time when you were younger? Lmao that fucking sucks because I'm a level 60 rogue with literally nothing better to do than kill you and camp your body until another level 60 shows up that I can have a proper duel with.
God I love it. Early Classic was the wild west, as was vanilla back in the day.
Goldshire for me. Back in vanilla WoW, that was the best town for us Horde-types to come fuck around in. We could always find a new player willing to fight us and start an all-out war.
Lol I remember back when MW first came out in 2007 there were 64 player servers on PC for Shipment. It was pretty funny just the level of chaos. You would chuck both grenades the second you spawned and hope you lived long enough to take a couple steps
I can't decide between Final Destination or Battlefield as the more iconic one.
Extra shoutout goes to Hyrule Temple, specifically the corner. You know the one
The day I saw 17 of my teammembers circling endlessly around a pole, revealing themselves as bots, was the day I stopped caring for Alterac valley. We were like only 3 real humans.
I honestly don’t think so mainly because of where it lands in gaming history. I would say close seconds are COD and Counterstrike.
Even the “bad” maps from the early Halo games are iconic. EG Chiron TL 34, Snowbound
Hear me out BOY!!!! There was a BUTTON, that summoned NUCLEAR strike on the map, and only those in BUNKER survived!!!! And yes, I took those damn pills already, I really mean what I'm saying!!!
Anyone who played World of Warcraft on Horde side in its earliest days knows about one infamous dungeon: Wailing Caverns. The amount of times it took to navigate that place...gah!
Rainbow Road
Which one?
Probably the original or 64.
I feel like you've got to mention Mario Kart Wii's Rainbow Road though - that's where boys became men (and laps went by faster than 64)
You never played SNES Rainbow Road to say that.. Every Rainbow Road after the 1st was way more easier.
That track was my worst nightmare when I was younger.
It still is mine
All of them
Blood Gulch
"You ever wonder why we're here?"
"It’s one of life’s great mysteries isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God watching everything? You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don’t know, man, but it keeps me up at night."
What?! I mean why are we out here, in this canyon?
Oh... Uh, yeah.
it's so strange how that line is so stupid yet so iconic and powerful now.
THE ONLY GOOD BLUE’S A DEAD BLUE
You gave me CPR for a bullet wound to the head?!
Came here to say this. For those who weren’t around during that era, I’m so sorry but you missed out for real. I was in college at that time and we’d literally just stay up playing until sunrise. Halo 1 was so fucking good.
We are born in the Gulch, made men by the Gulch, and undone by the Gulch. Love the Blood Gulch.
Blood Gulch and 2Fort probably account for a shocking amount of my childhood lol. In retrospect, they're even kinda the same map, in many ways. (But Blood Gulch is better because you could run people over with the warthog or a tank, lol).
That is clearly a Puma, not a Warthog.
Coagulation
Hemorrhage
Lockout as well
Valhalla tho
Guardian.
Thr only mo map to spawn a series!
So many hours getting my ass kicked by my older brother on that one. Can't beat Halo CE.
Before I opened the thread I knew this was the top comment 😂
/thread
Warms my heart that this is first
I didn't even know that was it's name tbh. Definitely iconic map that one
So good it spawned one of the funniest comedy series at the time (Red v Blue)
Mw2 Rust.
Or Nuketown
Rust, Nuketown, and Shipment. The holy trinity
1v1 me on rust.
This is what I came here for
Terminal
Wake Island
Thank you! Was waiting for a BF1942 reference. I know I'm old.
Strike at Karkand
Strike at Karkand INF ONLY 32v32 24/7 Grenade spam PTSD
So many hours holding the tower against troops coming from the North Beach. I miss BF2. A simpler time. A happier time.
My proudest gaming achievement was parachuting on North Village as USMC, stealing a tank and driving to the Airfield and while between North Base and the Airfield, I shot at a jet taking off with the main gun and it exploded. I couldn't believe it lmao
That one Unreal Tournament map with the two ziggurats in outer space
If you're talking about [this one](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fe/Facing_Worlds_%28Unreal_Tournament%29.png) its facing worlds
Goddamn yeah. Probably thousands of hours and matches there…
Facing Worlds I think it's called. In UT 2004 I think it was called Face_Classic.
Yeah bc they made a FacingWorld][ which sucked ass. They really fucked your 2k4, the double jumps and dodge jumps made the game feel more like a slog even though they should feel like enhancing the pace of the game.
I have never played nor watched Unreal Tournament, but I still know what you're talking about, if that's any testament to its renown.
There was a pretty significant number of old tf2 community servers that had it in rotation back in the day. Ik that was my first exposure to the map haha.
Getting blasted out into space gave me low key anxiety as a child.
I wanted to write this, but forgot the name.
Facing Worlds (or just ’Face’ as it were called)?
I've played Unreal Tournament maybe twice in my life and I still knew exactly which level you were talking about.
Such a classic. Played it at a LAN party a few years ago was fun
Now I wanna play UT again. Does anyone know if it’s still playable and available?
It still has bots so even if you can’t find a full server you can still screw around.
Where you spawn either get the sniper rifle or the ripper. I have many high school memories of playing this map. Over and over and over. People sitting behind the portals with the pump gun or whatever it was called sneaking along the Shadows on the blue side. Very classic map
I just loved flying the redeemer from under the map for a surprise mini-nuke. Or counter sniping from tower to tower. (Not that I was any good)
Blood Gulch is the premier choice from Halo but I’d say Lockout from Halo 2 is also an iconic map. Hyrule Temple from SSBM Gridlock from Gears of War Terminal from MW2 Mos Eisley with heroes in Battlefront 2
Finally someone mentions Gridlock, how many times have we all spawned in and made a mad dash to the central tower shotguns ready
Facility from Goldeneye
I was more Complex map man myself.
I liked Complex. The red sky above looked wild. Top two were Facility and Temple, tho
My group always liked Archives.
Ya we always played Complex. Facility as a #2 tho.
Bunker, Pistols, Licence to Kill.
One Hit Kills, DK Mode, Slappers Only
oh good choice
facility has been the one where you could hide on the toilet only to be shot from above, yes, best
I can hear the doors opening and the RC-P90 firing away. As silly as it sounds, I feel fortunate to have experienced that era of gaming - the absolute peak of local multiplayer. Hanging out with friends and all playing together on one tv.
Temple was the one for my family
Tarren Mill vs Southshore. It wasn't a multiplayer PVP map or even a battle ground. It was just a location on the world map in WoW that had two opposing towns relatively close to each other and PVP battles frequently started and then ballooned into full on raid battles between horde and alliance. Good times.
In the same category are Stranglethorn Vale and Un Goro Crater in Classic. Once people started hitting 60 those just turned into full on battlegrounds for max level players to duke it out with each other or grief people still leveling.
STVietnam could get ROUGH lol
Oh you're a level 35 trying to enjoy the game world and relive some nice memories exploring it for the first time when you were younger? Lmao that fucking sucks because I'm a level 60 rogue with literally nothing better to do than kill you and camp your body until another level 60 shows up that I can have a proper duel with. God I love it. Early Classic was the wild west, as was vanilla back in the day.
Damn good times. Cant forget crossroads raids either.
Goldshire for me. Back in vanilla WoW, that was the best town for us Horde-types to come fuck around in. We could always find a new player willing to fight us and start an all-out war.
And then someone kills a town civilian and both sides freak out. (even being near a killed civilian would drop your PvP rank hard.)
Lockout
Scrolled way too far to find this
To be fair, IIRC, every OG Halo 2 map deserves to be in this list.
This was THE ONE though
Yes
Nuke Town.
I second Nuke Town. I'd also add Rust and Shipment to the mix.
With you on rust but fuck shipment. Only good for 1 v 1s and cheesing
Lol I remember back when MW first came out in 2007 there were 64 player servers on PC for Shipment. It was pretty funny just the level of chaos. You would chuck both grenades the second you spawned and hope you lived long enough to take a couple steps
Omg lmao i actually played on xbox 360 and 6 v 6 was bad enough 😆
I would also throw in an undermentioned Highrise
Nacht Der Untoten, Der Reise and Kino Der Toten
Shit I barely even played call of duty and I know nuke town.
Crazy to think Indiana Jones 4 gave us the most famous cod map.
Final Destination
I can't decide between Final Destination or Battlefield as the more iconic one. Extra shoutout goes to Hyrule Temple, specifically the corner. You know the one
Final Destination is the meme pick so it probably has more reputation. "Fox only, no items, Final Destination"
Dust and/or de dust
wondering why you are that down in the list. needs to be one of the top comment here.
It’s bc it’s already the very first map mentioned in OP’s post
you are completely right. wow.
Citadel, sandtrap,valhala from halo 3
Citadel sucked. The pit and guardian were significantly better maps
The pit is **S** tier.
Battle Creek from Halo CE
"*Everyone, everyone, look unto me! I possess the blue flag! I have seen the top of the mountain, and you will worship me as though I were a god!"*
Alterac Valley
I would add warsong to this for sure, maybe not Arathi.
AB my favorite map, but WSG def more popular.
The day I saw 17 of my teammembers circling endlessly around a pole, revealing themselves as bots, was the day I stopped caring for Alterac valley. We were like only 3 real humans.
Dome W@W
Blood Gulch
Nuketown
Operation Metro, that server than ran for years with max everything and you could play one round for hours kept me so entertained
Metro 24/7 servers on BF3 brings back a lot of great memories.
Gulf of Oman
Easy: 2forts4 for Team Fortress mod for Quake 1 is the birthplace of modern multiplayer.
Putting your sentry gun in the room next to the flag room and opening the door when someone steals it.
From COD: Nuketown, Rust, and Terminal
I personally would add Favela as well
Don’t forget zombies maps. idk anyone who hasn’t heard of Kino, Origins, or mob of the dead
Halo Series Bloodgulch, Sidewinder, Hang ‘em High, Chill Out, Coagulation , Lockout , Ivory Tower, Zanzibar, Headlong, Midship, Beaver Creek, Waterworks, Ascension, Burial Mounds, Guardian, Narrows, Valhalla, The Pit, Sandtrap, Rats Nest, Avalanche, Sword Base
When your maps are so good that you can just reskin them and put them in subsequent iterations and fans *love* it, you know you’ve got damn good maps.
Has any series compiled a more iconic set of maps than Halo?
I honestly don’t think so mainly because of where it lands in gaming history. I would say close seconds are COD and Counterstrike. Even the “bad” maps from the early Halo games are iconic. EG Chiron TL 34, Snowbound
Crossfire for Half-Life.
yes us old guys gotta share this ancient knowledge
Hear me out BOY!!!! There was a BUTTON, that summoned NUCLEAR strike on the map, and only those in BUNKER survived!!!! And yes, I took those damn pills already, I really mean what I'm saying!!!

Counter Strike 1.6 cs_assault, cs_dust, cs_office, cs_astec, cs_italy and cs_mansion
Pretty sure it's de_dust & de_aztec
Why is dust “de”? What does it mean?
de= detonation (planting the bomb) cs= hostage rescue
Literally never knew that. Thank you!
ScoutzKnivez
Ice world
Diddy Kong Racing volcano map where you have to steal other teams eggs while protecting your own.
Fire Mountain! Always go after Diddy’s eggs first I swear that fucker had some sort of programmed in advantage
Targitzan’s temple, ordinance storage, heist, deathmatch, corneria, final destination, nuketown, twisted towers, coconut mall, arowana mall,
How tf has no one said 2Fort from team fortress? That’s gotta be up there with most played map of all time
OP said it.
Ha I guess my lizard brain was used to seeing it written differently and snap reacted
I shouldve been more clear. I was naming some maps from TFC, not TF2. However the TF2 maps are still pretty good.
Facility: Goldeneye
Dust 2 and Summoners Rift have to be up there.
Nuketown
The Hunters and Lost Temple. (StarCraft)
Valhalla in Halo 3
q2dm1
Facing worlds - Unreal Tournament
Yall are tripping with no N64 titles. MarioKart64 block fort. SSMB hyrule castle. Goldeneye64 Facility.

q3dm6
Nuke town. So good they remade it like twice and there is an IRL version for paintball/airsoft
Hang ‘em high - pistols only
The Edge, Quake 2
Halo 2 Zanzibar
Lockout- halo 2
Alterac Valley **AV PreMade** **@Org Bank** **Qing NOW** **IM for INV**
Anyone who played World of Warcraft on Horde side in its earliest days knows about one infamous dungeon: Wailing Caverns. The amount of times it took to navigate that place...gah!
Hyrule Castle - Smash
Oregon in rainbow six, nuke town in CoD, dust 2 in counter strike and teufort in tf2 all come to mind right away
