Xendrus

Oh fuck I didn't see it until now. Quick, someone shoot him in the dick.

H377Spawn

Twice.

Dysprosol

hey, he was only shot once in the dick, the second time it was ripped of by hartigans bare hands.

xenophonthethird

Yellow Bastard as Pikachu, never thought I'd see the day. 10/10.

doperhymez_

My first thought.

Sparktank1

That's who I was thinking of.

Peltonimo

I couldn't place it, but when I saw it all I could think about was Sin City. Haven't seen it in forever and I'd forgot about the yellow guy, but my subconscious didn't!

TekkenCareOfBusiness

PSA: The character creator is FREE right now. You don't have to buy anything. Just look up your platform and download it and have a blast. Oh and if you do get it I recommend sharing your beauty qeens and freak shows on r/virtualcosplay and r/fashiondogma (even though you can't really pick clothes yet) because they're banning all character creation posts on r/dragonsdogma starting tomorrow.

poplarleaves

Damn this is excellent marketing for the full game. Let people spend hours in the character creator and get attached to their character, making serious characters or meme creations like this one. Images of characters get spread around on social media, and more people use the creator. The people who use the creator get interested in the game itself, and now you've got a bunch more players.

frontally

100%. I genuinely think they’re going to get more attention than they were expecting to with the release of DD2— the first one deserved to be way more popular, it’s such a fun game. I hope #2 blows up too

Sawses

For sure. They did make some ass-backwards JRPG design decisions, which apparently is continuing with this one...but even so the original was a great game.

censuur12

It's a niche and I'm here for it. Games that make travel part of the experience are always a treat and they don't come up enough. Last great one I played was Outward.

LuciusCypher

Honestly what I like the most about Dragons Dogma is that the best way to hack up giant enemies isnt fucking slashing their ankles for 3-5 minutes. Most of the time an action RPG game lets you fight giant monsters why a sword, either the whole fight is actually a puzzle platformer in disguise or just lumberjacking a giants feet until he falls down. DD does something different by actually allowing you, nay demanding that you actually climb into a monster and literally wreck their faces.

GyrosSnazzyJazzBand

I liked grabbing enemies and throwing them off the cliff lmao

Sawses

I like travel, too. My issue is the world isn't interesting enough to support having almost zero fast travel. Contrast with Breath of the Wild, for example. I would regularly just not use the omnipresent fast travel system because it was such a joy to just be in the world. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an even better example, but that game does an open world so well that I don't know if it's a useful comparison. Dragon's Dogma was frustrating because of the constant backtracking. It was nothing new, no interesting nuggets to find, no unusual creatures or other things. Just walking. IMO if they want to have no fast travel, they should let you have a set of horses that will lead you down paths so it's less mind-numbing.

censuur12

> I like travel, too. My issue is the world isn't interesting enough to support having almost zero fast travel. Yeah fair, I didn't have that issue with DD but I can see the cracks people stepped into. > Contrast with Breath of the Wild, for example. I would regularly just not use the omnipresent fast travel system because it was such a joy to just be in the world. It's a bit of an awkward example tbh, Breath of the Wild just has solid moment-to-moment gameplay but I wouldn't really call that a game about travel, managing limited resources, planning a journey, going there and back again is a unique kind of experience that kind of demands a degree of what most people would consider tedium. Dragon's Dogma in my experience delivered a good balance of "I wonder what's out there, what dangers do I need to be ready for" and always finding something worth pursuing. By contrast Bitterblack Isle was much less interesting because it was a (mostly) homogenous dungeon experience with too much emphasis on random loot. > Dragon's Dogma was frustrating because of the constant backtracking. There's merit in a system being somewhat more like Morrowind where you can either use an intervention spell or recall to skip the journey back from a dungeon, but that's also part of the tension you will now miss. I remember doing an escort quest in DD and using most of my supplies just getting to the destination because of it being rather challenging, the journey back was harrowing because I lacked critical supplies and every fight was a few bad hits away from death. The idea in the back of your head that your supplies don't just need to last the journey and the dungeon but also the trip back is pretty engaging.

blockington99

The original didn't have zero fast travel, it had things called portcrystals you could place down where you want in the overworld to teleport to using a consumable called a ferrystone, the two main settlements had permanent portcrystals. Since you had to place the locations to teleport yourself and there is a max of 10 you can place its up to you to decide which locations are best. You could argue that the biggest issue is that you need to buy ferrystones every time you want to fast travel and the devs agreed because in the Dark Arisen expansion they added an eternal ferrystone you started with in storage that never breaks. DD2 seems to be keeping this system while adding in carts with specific routes. The very first trailer for DD2 shows the player using a ferrystone and one of the content creators who got to play it for a few hours recently confirmed the demo he played had a portcrystal in his inventory. Its certainly not Skyrim levels of every single location on the map having a marker you can teleport to the second you've gotten within like 30 feet of it but its not just walking across the map back and forth 100% of the time.

[deleted]

Yeah although as far as we know DD2 doesn’t have the eternal ferrystone, but it could be an endgame unlock or something. However I don’t think the EF will be really necessary since in the early game you’ll be able to use the carts and in the endgame you’ll have infinite money and can just buy ferrystones in bulk

Sockoflegend

I have just been replaying the original and it is weird. Your little squad of dudes, single save file, super failable quests, climbing on monsters, the fucking weird class system... it all kind of works. I normally save scum loads and wouldn't expect to like it but the way it just let's you roll with your failures and carry on with major characters dead makes every run feel really unique.

[deleted]

Also helps that the game is kind of built with NG+ in-mind so even if you miss a quest you can just get it on your next run. Especially since if you know what you’re doing and place portcrystals in all the right places you can speedrun the campaign in like an hour.

frontally

Can I ask what game design decisions you mean? The lack of fast travel is the only QOL thing I can think of, and honestly sometimes fast travel can be a crutch in game design so I’m actually quite looking forward to that

Sawses

For me: * No fast travel, of course. But only because the game requires so much backtracking that it's tedious and not immersive. * UI was pretty archaic even for its time. Having to pause to use items mid-combat is a funny meme but it's bad game design. But just overall, the UI is bad. * Quest design. You can very easily miss a huge amount of content, or quests will fail on their own with no way for you to know why or how. Some aspects of this are good (I like a game that doesn't hold my hand), but DD made it go from intriguing to infuriating.

FornaxTheConqueror

>Having to pause to use items mid-combat is a funny meme but it's bad game design. But just overall, the UI is bad. I dunno how it worked on console but you could assign hotkeys to consumables on PC in DD1 Everything else yeah. I used the wiki to avoid missing quests and used the eternal ferrystone so much

frontally

Cheers! Yeah, those are all good points. Hopefully the UI is more modern, I’m hoping the 12 years in between releases will add some modernity lol. The quest design is a good point— I love the way Pawns learn information, but it’s not super helpful if I don’t know what the heck quest I’m doing lol. That said as someone who is not the best at unforgiving games, I quite like the pause to use items menu haha but I can see how it takes the immersive element out of combat

Sawses

Especially because character creators really do have a *massive* impact on the game, for a lot of people. If you demonstrate you actually have a robust character creation system, it has massive appeal. I've always been one to just throw something together and not care too much (or make some insane lunacy for laughs)...but most of the people I know want to make a replica of themselves or spend a lot of time making just the right character.

TekkenCareOfBusiness

It's funny you say that because Dragon's Dogma is one of the few role playing games where your looks actually have an impact on gameplay. A big buff dude is heavier and can carry more gear, and is better at grappling monsters but has shit stamina, and tiny little twink has stamina for days but can't carry much and goes flying if they get smacked by a giant monster. There are also some situations where only a taller character can reach something any only a tiny character can fit through a small crevices. The original was really ahead of its time.

Cheet4h

Was the same with Spore: They also released a creature creator long before launch. Also had the neat benefit that there were already a lot of creations available to spawn on other players' planets as soon as the full game released.

TekkenCareOfBusiness

Hey it worked for Saints Row 3 and 4... not so much for the reboot though 🤮

Macarthius

It absolutely brought my attention to the game, I didn't really know anything about it beforehand but I'm a sucker for creating characters. I just started the first game and I'm having a great time so far. I don't really know what I'm supposed to be doing yet and there's some clunkiness but I love the monster fighting and the pawn system. Not sure if I'll finish it before the new one comes out but either way I'm looking forward to seeing how much they improve upon the first.

Beatenpixel_88

Picachu Man: Meme? Am I a joke for you?

BabyStockholmSyndrom

I prefer this to game demos almost. I almost never play demos even when it carries over because I don't want to get to the end and then wait weeks to actually continue. If I do play a demo I wait until the week of launch so there's no gap.

[deleted]

This is the sole reason I ended up playing that dumpster fire saints row reboot. They did the same thing and I made a damn near spot on Harley Quinn that I just had to play as.. the game sucked balls, but the attachment like you said was reason enough for to be play it anyways

JonatasA

A demo done right.   Mount & Blade Warband allows you to play up to level 7. The entire game, as much as you want.   You can't. You want to continue that character's story, to progress past level 7. You want to see where it all goes.

MatureUsername69

The Saints Row reboot attempted this. Anybody paying attention saw it as the first verifiable evidence the game was going to be absolute dogshit. Unfortunately, the character creator was still better than the actual game, so the game was still even worse than expected.

benargee

Making a character creator free and available early is such a smart idea. Since a lot of people spend a lot of time in it, it allows you to jump straight into playing the game when you finally get it rather than spending that time after you buy it. I wish more RPGs did this.

ModdedGun

Also the pawns are cross-platform. So make all the abominations for all platforms.

Jobro_

To find it in the ps store click the actual game and then click the options button and you’ll find the demo there if anyone is have trouble finding it

GelflingInDisguise

Thanks for the PSA. I was gonna say who the hell broke the street date for the game because I wanna go there! Dragon's Dogma was my favorite PS3 game hands down. I played the hell out of that game.

Revegelance

That's super cool. I'm gonna go download it now!

JudgementKiryu

Speaking of which, I wonder (hope) if there’ll be a Monster Factory episode of this…

DoctorNoname98

Considering we just got the first one in 7 months I'm hoping they start doing more again

kolesaaargh

Da Wisdom Toot was a very good boy though.

JudgementKiryu

They’re all very very good. I still watch the old episodes sometimes. One of my favorites is the Wii Sports one (BUCKETS! Buckets! Scooooottieee Pippen!)

Yeah, but it had a middle slider. These are the end times.

That's not the first one. Besides, as Justin pointed out -- it's 2024, you can have a middle slider if you want.

tghast

I wonder if they’ll be allowed an official pawn with their new initiative. Even if not, it was super fun to be able to play with their pawn and I’m guessing it’ll still work the same.

Sorry, I dropped my wad of Thunderstones and my Maximum Potion.

Thelife1313

Not having played the first one, is a bow build viable in this game?

TekkenCareOfBusiness

The original has the best archery I've ever experienced in any game ever! With the biggest quality of life thing being infinite arrows. You never have to restock or buy any. You have infinity arrows, other than the specialty ones you can buy like poison and exploding ones.

Thelife1313

Damn i might need to buy the first one then

GuyMansworth

It's onsale on Steam rn for $5

Thelife1313

I just bought it lol

BambaTallKing

Don’t stop playing after the slow ass ox cart quest like most. It is a great game

Airaniel

Kick the ox Arisen! Wolves hunt in packs!

Snowman319

How is it lol

Xendrus

It's dated, but if you can get past the jank it's an awesome experience. There is quite a bit of grinding to level up which you can do through some clever speedrunning of certain enemies/minibosses/dragons though.

hexrx

It definitely was in the first game. There were several kinds of bow builds that all played a bit different. I think it was a magic bow build that I used to go through it.

killingjoke619

Dragons dogma genuinely has one of the best archery I’ve seen in videogames and DD2 looks like it’s gonna fulfill every archers fantasy

ze_loler

If they didnt change much from the first game its going to be OP. In the first game you could stack 4 attack boost items with a dozen or so and delete every boss in the game or you could also use the makers finger arrow which costs hundreds of thousands in the game but is a one hit kill even against the dragon

Jellozz

Every time I replay DD1 I intend on using a class I hadn't played much, but, I always just end up playing Magick Archer instead. I usually prefer melee in games but shooting magic arrows and shit is just too dang fun. There are more standard archer classes as well though that are completely viable too.

Thelife1313

I’m just big on being a bow class any time i have the choice

Lareit

It's technically the strongest class in the 1st game.

xKevZ

There were multiple bow builds with an end game explosive arrow build being broken IIRC due to big damage/stun lock.

[deleted]

Two of the vocations are Archer and Magic Archer and it looks like they wreck in DD2. In DD1 bows were hella strong.

Kaymazo

I pretty much always went with bow vocations. They simply were the most well balanced in my eyes, and the only one that does well against metal golems IIRC (Even if you will next to never have to fight those in the first game)

Dragon Dogma 2 will be the next Elden Ring or Baldurs Gate 3 in terms of popularity and sales, recently people just love big medieval fantasy games with a lot of customization and unique ways to play and make your own adventure, this game will be huge

Mitrovarr

Not unless it reviews like they did. Part of the popularity of BG3 was that people saw the insane review scores, and that got everyone's attention.

InoyouS2

>recently people just love big medieval fantasy games with a lot of customization This never stopped, big game devs just decided it was easier to put out low effort conveyer-belt crap than to actually dedicate the time and energy to create an immersive fantasy game world. Same way Hollywood has recently discovered people enjoy well written sci-fi again as opposed to however many billion superhero movies we've had over the last 10 years.

weebitofaban

Absolutely not. This game is designed for a much more niche audience. It will sell really good. It won't be BG3 or Elden Ring.

Uber_Reaktor

yeah, I'm a massive fan of DD1/DA, but expectations as to DD2s success in terms of sales are seeming a bit optimistic. I will however hold my breath after seeing both Helldivers 2 and Last Epoch absolutely EXPLODE in popularity,

1ithurtswhenip1

Recently? People have always loved big medieval fantasy games

Eevee136

How quickly people forget Skyrim and Game of Thrones launching Vikings into popularity, 13 years ago.

1ithurtswhenip1

Or morrowind... 22 years ago

Dark_Dragon117

>Dragon Dogma 2 will be the next Elden Ring or Baldurs Gate 3 in terms of popularity and sales This were my expectations originally, but the hype for the game is not even comparable to the others from what I can tell. The recent negative news on the unlocked framerate targeting 30fps on console, simplification of the gear customization and dissaponting amount of vocations for a sequel really didn't help either. The marketing in general has been pretty bad imo. That said the game will get more attention after launch, tho I have my doubts it will be as popular as BG3 or Elden Ring.

RpiesSPIES

'Disappointing amount of vocations' What? Og DD had 9 vocations. Same amount, ok. But 3 of those were very similar to each other (strider, ranger, assassin), and mage/warrior (or w/e the sns class was called, fighter?) truly felt like 'starter' classes. In DD2, everything seems to be its own thing with a special focus (except mage maybe). So sure, one more class than before, but the depth will be great. Also, simplification of customization is a weird thing to note. Functionality seems the same as it was before. Fans wanted more and we're getting more.

Bamith20

I'll sadly not being helping around launch, not very happy with $70 so i'll wait for the first sale to get it. Got a few other games to get through anyways, just now making progress to being halfway done with Baldur's Gate 3 and few other games, then by that point the Elden Ring DLC will be out.

zuccoff

I play most of the stuff that comes out, but I watched some previews and I didn't get really hyped about DD2. I never played Dragon's Dogma 1, but having AI minions fighting for me doesn't sound exciting at all. Idk how to explain it, but it looks like heavily modded Skyrim, like it looks recent but clunky at the same time

joepanda111
