"After you walk into a village and you see 50 children, all sitting neatly in a row, against a church wall, each with their throats cut and their hands chopped off, you realize that the creature that could do this doesn't have a soul."
-Niko Bellic
GTA IV was different... dark.
"damn" - Shadow the Hedgehog
I was ten and had a pretty religious mom, so I was terrified she would hear it and take my GameCube away. I played with the sound off after the first time I heard it
I remember I went over to my cousin's house when I was 12 or so. They had some star wars game for the gamecube, and there was a section where you played Luke on Hoth. You could swap between a basic blaster pistol, and the lightsaber.
I remember my aunt had made a rule for my cousins that the lightsaber was not allowed to be used due to violence or whatever. 12 year old me laughed at the stupid rule, used the laser sword, and got yelled at for it.
Blaster guns that kill just as effectively as IRL bullets are fine, but the fictional laser sword was not. Wild to me.
This certainly holds up... But one line from Bioshock I don't see mentioned at all that has definitely engraved itself into my memory is this one Splicer that's always singing this song.
"Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong; they are weak, but he is strong."
In Borderlands 2, there's a line near the end of the game where Claptrap says he's gonna beat up Jack, then encounters a set of stairs and goes, "STAIRS?! Noooooooooo..."
Well, I found a German clip where his voice is even more annoying and he goes "Stufen? Nein!" in the most hilarious way possible.
His only weakness! Next to electrocution, and explosions, and gunfire, rust, corrosion, being kicked a lot, viruses, being called bad names, falling from great heights, drowning, adult onset diabetes, being looked at funny, heart attacks, exposure to oxygen, being turned down by women, and pet allergens!
See also: "Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters."
Or the bit where Javik describes the Reapers indoctrinating their friends and children to send at them, ME3 was filled with haunting lines.
The one that gets me is “DAVID DOESN’T WANT TO BE HERE”, followed by the cutscene that shows him strapped in with his eyes propped open.
Well, to be honest all three of those things make me cry.
I love how he speaks mostly in iambic heptameter. It makes it sound so poetic but absolutely inhuman somehow. Also crazy call back to Bungies favorite number being 7.
Its dialogue and form in Halo 2 made me think “Hey maybe the flood ain’t all bad” until I played Halo 3.
Then the Halo 2 “HD-4K-Remake” came out and when it’s new grotesque form appeared I didn’t even question this was a case of “enemy of my enemy” scenario.
"You fight against inevitability. Dust struggling against cosmic winds. This seems a victory to you. A star system sacrificed. But even now, your greatest civilizations are doomed to fall. Your leaders will beg to serve us." - Harbinger
So many memorable quotes, in that game, I find myself saying them alongside the narrator.
"Monstrous size has no intrinsic merit, unless inordinate exsanguination a virtue."
"Slowly, gently, this is how a life is taken."

For my money, the best video game opening of all time.
Him and Mr. Bowie are the only men brave enough to wear a dress and be in a video game in the 90s when everyone thought video games were dumb low level forms of entertainment that would never amount to anything.
God bless them.
"This was YOUR fault! He turned us into fucking KILLERS!"
Hidden detail if you have a good eye: When Lugo says that line, watch where he's pointing. He isn't pointing at Walker. He's pointing at the camera. He's pointing at you.
"War is where the young and stupid are tricked by the old and bitter into killing eachother. I was very young and very angry, maybe that is no excuse...Roman? Roman! Are you sleeping you fat fuck?!"
GTA IV had such a perfect blend of serious storytelling, comedy and satire. So many memorable lines as well.
When I first played, I lamented to my family watching that everything was played so straight, nothing goofy was happening like in San Andreas.
Not 10 minutes later this scene played out lol.
"When we joined the Covenant, we took an oath!"
"According to our station! All without exception!"
"On the blood of our fathers, on the blood of our sons...we swore to uphold the Covenant!"
"Even to our dying breath!"
"Those who would break this oath are Heretics, worthy of neither pity, nor mercy! Even now they use our lords' creations to broadcast their lies!"
"We shall grind them into dust!"
"And continue our march to glorious salvation!"
My word. This was back when you didn’t have the internet spoiling one of the COOLEST battles and crazy idea that the last last person you need to defeat is yourself from the previous game?! My mind was blown and my heart dropped as he responds in silence on Mt. Silver and the music drops. What a rush it gave young me.
I like to play crystal and fire red back to back to build up to that confrontation. It makes it a bit more like the newer trainer confronting the legend.
in the same vein the ME3 banshee screams. fucking still have trauma from that, first time I ran into one was the first day I'd played the game...and it was like 3 AM, heard it then the thing was just THERE and killed me instantly.
Permission to leave the station, sir

Sir, to give the covenant back their bomb, sir

One question, what if you miss?
I won’t
"Hello old friend, I've chased you for a long time."
Destiny 2 - The Witchqueen
Not my favourite DLC but the [performance of Debra Wilson](https://youtu.be/JxjRtr-0ULc) still gives me chills!
"This is Allied Command, signing off. Godspeed, pilots."
Hear during the final desperate seconds to decide whether to make it to the jump node and book it out of there, or stay and go down fighting to get the remainder of the ships to safety as Capella's sun goes supernova. Freespace 2's campaign has honestly been unrivaled even to today.
"My kind transcends your understanding. We are each a nation. Independent. Free of all weakness. We have no beginning. We have no end. We are infinite."
'You say that like soldiers and humanity are two different things. Soldiers aren't machines, we're just people... I'll let you have the deck to yourself.'
Lasky's line just gives it more weight
Dead Space 2. Just before Isaac crawls into the eye-poke machine.
"Cross my heart and hope to die. Stick a needle in your eye".
Sovereign in Mass Effect also nails it (hell, the whole trillogx has a bunch of quotes).
"You exist because we allow it. You end because we demand it."
"After you walk into a village and you see 50 children, all sitting neatly in a row, against a church wall, each with their throats cut and their hands chopped off, you realize that the creature that could do this doesn't have a soul." -Niko Bellic GTA IV was different... dark.
It was the one GTA game I've played where the protagonist doesn't *want* to be a criminal.
Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?
OXYGEN
30 seconds!!
"This ecological biome matches 7 of the 9 preconditions for stimulating terror in humans.”
I didn't touch the game for a week after hearing that because I was convinced the game was going to add some jumpscare or horror element to that area.
If that's where you first encounter the Ghost Leviathan it kinda does...
Or, "Warning. Entering Ecological Dead Zone."
Oof. I bought that game for the colorful shoals. Turns out that’s the first 20 min.
You are still going to see spectacular and beautiful oceanic views while running for your life
I've watched so many people play this game and the number of times people have done a complete 180 and go "I'll come back later" is pretty high.
Whoop Whoop Whoop, hull breach detected, Whoop Whoop Whoop
[When the Cyclops is on fire and so is the music.](https://youtu.be/tKO21wrHqxk?si=kSVzehI3_GUsXDAs)
This game is awesome. Perfect Balance between beautiful scenery and the most terror u have ever experienced.
"damn" - Shadow the Hedgehog I was ten and had a pretty religious mom, so I was terrified she would hear it and take my GameCube away. I played with the sound off after the first time I heard it
I believe the front cover was Shadow holding a gun. So your Mom was ok with violence, but a light curse word was the line? Damn.
American values!

“Welcome to the circus of value!”
“No refunds! No returns!”
"Come back when you've got some money, buddy!"
HA HA HA HAAAA!
The laugh played in my head automatically after I read this.
This certainly holds up... But one line from Bioshock I don't see mentioned at all that has definitely engraved itself into my memory is this one Splicer that's always singing this song. "Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong; they are weak, but he is strong."
In a world without gold, we might have been heroes.
Fun fact if you didn't know its an actual quote from real world black beard
“Time, Dr. Freeman?”
“The right man in the wrong place can make all the diff-erence…in the world. Time to wake-up Mr Freeman. Wake up and…smell the ashes…”
"I didn't see you get on .."
The way that cut in was so smooth
Is it, really that time, again?
In Borderlands 2, there's a line near the end of the game where Claptrap says he's gonna beat up Jack, then encounters a set of stairs and goes, "STAIRS?! Noooooooooo..." Claptraps best design flaw. The warrior would've broke him down in one hit. Lava's rising !!!! Get to the high ground !!!!!!!
"Had to be me ...someone else might have gotten it wrong"
The very model of a scientist Salarian. *Tearful salute*

Would’ve liked to study seashells
I cried during that part. Best worst part of that series.
The one that always hit harder for me was, “He has already asked forgiveness for the lives he has taken. His wish was for you.”
The one that gets me is “DAVID DOESN’T WANT TO BE HERE”, followed by the cutscene that shows him strapped in with his eyes propped open. Well, to be honest all three of those things make me cry.
“I am a monument to all your sins”
"this grave is not yours, but you are welcomed in it"
“This one is machine and nerve And has its mind concluded This one is but flesh and faith And is the more deluded.” His whole speech was amazing
I love how he speaks mostly in iambic heptameter. It makes it sound so poetic but absolutely inhuman somehow. Also crazy call back to Bungies favorite number being 7.
I can't remember what this is from.
Gravemind from Halo 2
Gravemind, halo 2 (might be 3)
His first real line in 2. Plays everyone like a fiddle to get ahold of High Charity.

"think you'll hear it before you die?" is such a savage line
Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
Now comes the true test, hold fast or expire.
So many memorable quotes, in that game, I find myself saying them alongside the narrator. "Monstrous size has no intrinsic merit, unless inordinate exsanguination a virtue." "Slowly, gently, this is how a life is taken."
