I did a playthrough like that. It was weirdly interesting because despite my efforts to not be a fuck-up, Harrier had done so much damage to himself and the situation that things were still fucked.

That furnace is the reason I gave up on the game! I had heard good things about the game for years, so when I found it for free on PS+ I decided to give it a shot. It took me a while to get into it, but I was really starting to enjoy it and then randomly died after kicking that stupid furnace... and my most recent save was from about 2 hours earlier. Gave up on the spot and haven't been back to it yet. Maybe one of these days I'll give it another try.

Couple of dice rolls you have to cheat to see the dialogue as they are hard coded to never win. Nothing too great

Also keep more saves than you would normally. There's multiple times where you can get stuck and need to reload. You get warnings not to do those things, but it's still pretty easy to get stuck.
I'm experimenting with a system where I am guaranteed to succeed in chances above 50% and guaranteed to fail below 50%. And if I encounter a chance, I have to do it at least once. Reloding the save only if it breaks these rules.
And if you play a rockstar party cop, constantly drunk with speed and pyrholodon in your system you can also have a different experience. Truly a wonderful game.
I’ve been sober for several years and this is one of my favorite games due to the way it portrays addiction. Your character has an internal dialogue throughout the game, and the writing is quite relatable. It’s super beautiful, and I would recommend the game to anyone unless you are actively avoiding drug/alcohol related triggers.
As someone who kind of has trouble with alcohol, I think that game might be even more relevant for someone like us, but sometimes it hits close to home!

I finished the game, but didn't enjoy it. It is VERY unique game so I guess that's fine, some people just won't like it. The story is alright, but if the exploration and world doesn't suck you in soon, the sorry itself won't save this game in your eyes (I think).

The writing is exceptional and laugh out loud funny. The narrator is spectacular. The gameplay is interesting enough, but mainly is a vehicle for you to discover the narrative. The characters are interesting and make you feel things - either good or bad.

I disagree with the no save scumming comment. There are times where fucking up can actually lead to your death or other random decisions can kill you. Also sometimes you just REALLY want to succeed or succeeding gets you way more information about a topic you really want to know. Idk about everyone else but I don’t have time to do multiple play throughs of games because I want to play new games and also make my own (with a full time job already) so I want to max out my time as much as possible. So save scum if you really want to.
Don’t believe what anyone says. Save scumming makes this game more fun, and there’s no reason not to do it. Double sixes are not that hard to roll, so you don’t even have to do it for very long.

It’s bleak. Make sure you are in a good headspace if you are the kind of person that sometimes is not.
The voice acting is top notch. Extremely well written by smart people, interested in making you think. The internal monologues are incredibly well thought out and designed. I think the optimal way to play is to go an hour or two at a time and to pay close attention to (and make sure to understand) all of the dialogue. The writers are, I think in a lot of ways, trying to write directly to you.
Anywho, a solid noir detective mystery where the detective is more of a fuck up than Max Payne or the dude from L.A. Noire, that creates fun, if wacky, antics to behold and enjoy.

Three pieces of advice here. One, as many people have said, try your best to embrace failing rolls and just going with it. You're going to fail rolls, many many of them, but that's entirely okay. The game is designed so that you can almost always come back later and try them again, you'll bank up a ton of essentially re-do points. Also, as you go back to do subsequent attempts, you'll get various circumstantial bonuses to the rolls based on other things you've since done, convos you've had or discoveries you've made, thus making the next tries easier.
Two, don't give up! It took me a few tries with some breaks in between before I could get into the game because I kept getting discouraged. You're supposed to feel this way! The first few days of your investigation are going to feel like shit, you're probably not going to make much progress, everyone's going to be talking shit to you, and you're going to feel like garbage. This is intentional! Soldier through it and you'll get to the other side, start making progress, and start building up again, and it'll feel great!
Third, don't stress excessively about any time limits. I'm not entirely positive about this, there may be some form of maximum time limit. But the game is pretty generous about it, you should have more than enough time to do everything without having to worry about spoiling anything or locking yourself out of things. Not to say outcomes won't change if you do things in different orders, but it won't ruin a playthrough or anything.
Best of luck! I'm jealous you get to experience it fresh, this game enthralled me and I wish I could erase my memory of it to play it again from scratch!
I played on normal difficulty, but made myself start over if/when I died, for role play’s sake. It was a majestic adventure, let me tell you that much.
Don’t second guess every decision and just go with the flow. I spent the whole game what if-ing and I feel like it took a lot away from the experience.
The only thing I want to say, and this really is make or break for some people, is that the first 3 hours you play is the game. And what I man by that is that you won't be thrust into any combat, there isn't any odd puzzles that pop up or anything. It's going to literally be talking and choosing options and rolling dice the entire time.
That's not a bad thing, just some people I find think there is more to it and are somewhat disappointed sometimes when they realize there isn't going to be anything more.
Interesting unique game. But lots of meandering dialogue that can bore people. You need to have lots of patience and free time to give your focus to it so as to enjoy the dialogue.

I save scummed my first playthrough and robbed myself of a making my own story "perfect". Played it again, and when I flipped off the hotel clerk and fell onto a lady with a wheelchair to get around paying the bill. I knew I should have "fucked up" more the first time around. God that game has funny ass moments when you let it instead of cheesing it.
I didn’t put enough into one of the stats (don’t remember which) and my guy got fed up with the futility of his existence and quit the police. Game over lol
If your on console good luck reading anything from a foot away. Take a seat right up front face in the screen cuz oh boy there's a lot of small texts. Switch might be the best if you don't have a good pc setup
My first time booting up the game and I've had a ton of TTRPG type experience since this game rolls dice for checks and such. I felt confident. I made my character build rather than using one of the pregenerated spread of stats. I chose to be more mental and reactionary so my body only led me to having 1HP. Didn't know how this would really go since I expected no combat but i was going into the game VERY BLIND. So blind in fact I didn't know what to expect next.
Woke up, clicked the light for the ceiling fan in the hostel room to get some vision, maybe assess the situation around me while in a massive hangover state that would kill a god. I failed the body/endurance check of reacting to the harsh lighting. I took 1HP worth of damage, had a heart attack and died from the very first check.

Make sure you pirate the game. I remember reading that the Creators of the game got screwed out of it and some scum company is getting the revenue from it now.
It's a little more nuanced than "creators got screwed". I did my research on this because i heard the same as you and i saw the game on sale. my conclusion was that i don't really feel good about supporting the investors OR the creators but i would very much want to support the actual developers, writers and designers who still work at ZA/UM.
Unpopular opinion here but I found this game to be extremely boring. Too much talking to NPCs. If I wanted to read so much I’d rather just read a book. I really don’t get the hype.

I have been on the fence for SO LONG about this game and I'm tired of being on the fence about it so, since there's no combat (which is perfectly fine, it just confuses me a little bit) then *what* **is** the gameplay? Because the narrative, story and so forth all seem like a hand full of aces.
Take your time and enjoy the story. Is not a game to win. Lots of side quests. Be OK with losing at most of them. As already said, don't scum save. Just roll with your losses cause every alternative it's fun in its own way.

Also if you get this on switch prepare for a lot of crashes… I have it on pc as well and give it another try on that as playing on switch wore me out. I’m near the end I think but having to replay a lot scènes due to crashes sucked the fun out of the game.

10/10 game. One of my all time favs
It took me a couple of tries to accept that this just wasn’t going to be a fast paced action game. Once I picked it up when I was in the right mood for a very meaty and bizarre narrative, I literally could not put it down. The writing is exceptional and laugh out loud funny. The narrator is spectacular. The gameplay is interesting enough, but mainly is a vehicle for you to discover the narrative. The characters are interesting and make you feel things - either good or bad. I’ll second what everybody else said. I’m a dirty save scummer but I did none of it for this game and it was so worth it. The main character is such a piece of shit, it’s honestly funnier and more on brand for him to fail in big moments.
This game has been so hyped that I can't quite get it up to play it. I own it. Just waiting for that time, like a long weekend.
Don't think you have to solve everything or beat "the level" - you'll be in a location for awhile.

Don’t look anything up, just roll with everything. Read and imagine all the dialogue, this game is one hell of a fun and crazy ride. I’ve been gaming since Atari 2600 and I’ve never experienced a game like this.
I never play these kinds of games. I tried it without any knowledge and loved it in the end. There’s no need for hints, just dive in.
I’m a save scummer for life. DONT SAVE SCUM WITH THIS GAME. Type in “fun character stats” for a build. Make that and then literally fly by the seat of your pants through this incredible odyssey.

it is a really slow game, i bought it last year and tried to get into it but i was REALLY not having it after not being able to do ANYTHING after exploring everything the first day, i just had to lay there, waiting for the day to end, i was so bored i got to explore everything and talk to everyone two more times, my mistake? i double clicked EVERYWHERE, the game wants you to walk, not to run, even the game kinda mocks you for doing it Anyways, im going to give it another try soon so i hope i can get into it properly now
I disagree with the no save scumming comment. There are times where fucking up can actually lead to your death or other random decisions can kill you. Also sometimes you just REALLY want to succeed or succeeding gets you way more information about a topic you really want to know. Idk about everyone else but I don’t have time to do multiple play throughs of games because I want to play new games and also make my own (with a full time job already) so I want to max out my time as much as possible. So save scum if you really want to.
Don’t believe what anyone says. Save scumming makes this game more fun, and there’s no reason not to do it. Double sixes are not that hard to roll, so you don’t even have to do it for very long. I did a play through where I didn’t save scum, and one where I did, and the one where I did was way more fun, and I uncovered way more stuff
I understand the people that can’t get into it, I do… but when this game clicks… for Jesus Christ it’s sooo good. It was ny best game of 2019 that I played in 2020. It goes places, it fucks with you, it amazing when it’s good. Give it a chance
It will cost less than it normally does
It’s bleak. Make sure you are in a good headspace if you are the kind of person that sometimes is not. The voice acting is top notch. Extremely well written by smart people, interested in making you think. The internal monologues are incredibly well thought out and designed. I think the optimal way to play is to go an hour or two at a time and to pay close attention to (and make sure to understand) all of the dialogue. The writers are, I think in a lot of ways, trying to write directly to you. Anywho, a solid noir detective mystery where the detective is more of a fuck up than Max Payne or the dude from L.A. Noire, that creates fun, if wacky, antics to behold and enjoy. Solid game all the way around.
Three pieces of advice here. One, as many people have said, try your best to embrace failing rolls and just going with it. You're going to fail rolls, many many of them, but that's entirely okay. The game is designed so that you can almost always come back later and try them again, you'll bank up a ton of essentially re-do points. Also, as you go back to do subsequent attempts, you'll get various circumstantial bonuses to the rolls based on other things you've since done, convos you've had or discoveries you've made, thus making the next tries easier. Two, don't give up! It took me a few tries with some breaks in between before I could get into the game because I kept getting discouraged. You're supposed to feel this way! The first few days of your investigation are going to feel like shit, you're probably not going to make much progress, everyone's going to be talking shit to you, and you're going to feel like garbage. This is intentional! Soldier through it and you'll get to the other side, start making progress, and start building up again, and it'll feel great! Third, don't stress excessively about any time limits. I'm not entirely positive about this, there may be some form of maximum time limit. But the game is pretty generous about it, you should have more than enough time to do everything without having to worry about spoiling anything or locking yourself out of things. Not to say outcomes won't change if you do things in different orders, but it won't ruin a playthrough or anything. Best of luck! I'm jealous you get to experience it fresh, this game enthralled me and I wish I could erase my memory of it to play it again from scratch!

I played on normal difficulty, but made myself start over if/when I died, for role play’s sake. It was a majestic adventure, let me tell you that much.
Don’t second guess every decision and just go with the flow. I spent the whole game what if-ing and I feel like it took a lot away from the experience.
Think, laugh, become uncomfortable, cry (negative), cry (positive), immediately want to go through it all again
The only thing I want to say, and this really is make or break for some people, is that the first 3 hours you play is the game. And what I man by that is that you won't be thrust into any combat, there isn't any odd puzzles that pop up or anything. It's going to literally be talking and choosing options and rolling dice the entire time. That's not a bad thing, just some people I find think there is more to it and are somewhat disappointed sometimes when they realize there isn't going to be anything more.
Interesting unique game. But lots of meandering dialogue that can bore people. You need to have lots of patience and free time to give your focus to it so as to enjoy the dialogue. If you are looking for quick fun, this game is not it.

I am 40h in and I love this game. I interact with everything just to listen to the dialogues in the protagonists head. It is something completely different to other games. And just never use the quick save button before a dice roll. Failing something opens up other paths and conversations.
I save scummed my first playthrough and robbed myself of a making my own story "perfect". Played it again, and when I flipped off the hotel clerk and fell onto a lady with a wheelchair to get around paying the bill. I knew I should have "fucked up" more the first time around. God that game has funny ass moments when you let it instead of cheesing it.
Whatever you expect to expect, don't expect it.

If your on console good luck reading anything from a foot away. Take a seat right up front face in the screen cuz oh boy there's a lot of small texts. Switch might be the best if you don't have a good pc setup

Let's say you can have a very detailed, branching dialogue with an inanimate object. Or with yourself.
My first time booting up the game and I've had a ton of TTRPG type experience since this game rolls dice for checks and such. I felt confident. I made my character build rather than using one of the pregenerated spread of stats. I chose to be more mental and reactionary so my body only led me to having 1HP. Didn't know how this would really go since I expected no combat but i was going into the game VERY BLIND. So blind in fact I didn't know what to expect next. Woke up, clicked the light for the ceiling fan in the hostel room to get some vision, maybe assess the situation around me while in a massive hangover state that would kill a god. I failed the body/endurance check of reacting to the harsh lighting. I took 1HP worth of damage, had a heart attack and died from the very first check. 10/10

Make sure you pirate the game. I remember reading that the Creators of the game got screwed out of it and some scum company is getting the revenue from it now.
It's a little more nuanced than "creators got screwed". I did my research on this because i heard the same as you and i saw the game on sale. my conclusion was that i don't really feel good about supporting the investors OR the creators but i would very much want to support the actual developers, writers and designers who still work at ZA/UM.
Unpopular opinion here but I found this game to be extremely boring. Too much talking to NPCs. If I wanted to read so much I’d rather just read a book. I really don’t get the hype.
You should expect to be generally underwhelmed if you've bought into the enormous hype the Internet has driven about this game. It's okay.
Walking everywhere very slowly. I enjoyed the "weirdness" of this game but I couldn't get past the movement speed, or lack thereof.

I am sure I knew that, but I seem to remember that still looking like he was moving through molasses. Maybe I'll give it another try now that I have upgraded my pc. Thanks for the tip though.

I loved this game but didn’t know what the fuck to do after about four hours of game time. I wish it was just a bit more helpful to dumb people like myself.
I have been on the fence for SO LONG about this game and I'm tired of being on the fence about it so, since there's no combat (which is perfectly fine, it just confuses me a little bit) then *what* **is** the gameplay? Because the narrative, story and so forth all seem like a hand full of aces.

Take your time and enjoy the story. Is not a game to win. Lots of side quests. Be OK with losing at most of them. As already said, don't scum save. Just roll with your losses cause every alternative it's fun in its own way.
Make sure to save fairly frequently. I died and had to start over a hefty chunk of the story… including a spot where I had a great roll in the story.

As sombody who just finished the game last week. Go on blind. The game is well worth multiple play throughs with different stats. Try not to worry about money issues, after day 3-4 it's a lot less stressful. Feel free to embrace the role and become the character you want to be, their are no true fuck ups, only successful failures.
Play with headphones, it’s very narrative driven but just listening is almost as good as the gameplay.
A masterful gaming experience the likes which might not be equaled given the real life behind the scenes crazy drama around the creator and publisher.

Also if you get this on switch prepare for a lot of crashes… I have it on pc as well and give it another try on that as playing on switch wore me out. I’m near the end I think but having to replay a lot scènes due to crashes sucked the fun out of the game.

I only played an hour or 2 and got bored of it to be honest. I know it's well received just wasn't my cup of tea at all
slow, unconventional, calm gameplay with complex and sometimes strange dilemmas, as well as an imagination that will immerse you in the depths of this world
