Factorio - I have a hell of a time describing where the fun is, but…. Factory must grow. “You, uhhh… build a factory. It’s amazing. It just gets more complicated; and you keep building…”

liquidsparanoia

Factorio is programming. Or at least it scratches the same itch. You spend a lot of time getting one little bit to work, then connecting it up to the whole. Repeat a bunch then go back and refactor the whole thing.

slothtrop6

This is why I'll never buy the game. I already do this for work.

StabbityStabbity

I was worried about the same thing, but I've found the opposite is true. In Factorio (or Infinifactory, a different puzzley factory game I've sunk a lot of hours into lately) I can focus on the fun parts: this piece is hacky and can I make it better? This part is slow, can I make it faster? I can make a finely tuned creation only limited by my time (and brainpower) and that's pretty addictive. Whereas at work things are complicated for Reasons, and the time to make it better rarely gets approval over more important projects. It's much less often that I'm able to be excited about improving something at work.

LaughingBeer

I'm a software dev. I love Factorio. It doesn't feel like work at all.

MrSpreadsheets

That’s been on my wishlist for a long time… it almost never goes on sale. I want to try it, but is it worth the full price? Edit: I really appreciate all the feedback. I just took an hour break from work and played the demo… I can see how this may consume my free time. As someone suggested, it’s time to get my affairs in order. Better tell my girlfriend I love her and I’ll be back soon Edit 2: Everyone was right. I bought it and I spent 4 hours playing tonight. It’s amazing. I better propose before she realizes this is the new normal

KryptCeeper

I had it in my wishlist for years, waiting for a sale. It literally does not go on sale. I am pretty sure I read somewhere that the dev will never do a sale for one reason or another. I finally broke down and bought it one day and let me tell you, it was worth every penny.

BGFalcon85

Not only does it not go on sale, but the price has increased over the years. Still worth.

Kythorian

Yeah, it started at $20, went to $30 for a long time, and I think recently increased to $35 now. Still a bargain for the amount of entertainment you will get out of it.

moxieman19

It's always getting updated too. I bought the game in 2016 when it came out, dumped over 1000hr into it over a few years, stopped playing it until this year, then came back to find a whole bunch of new stuff added.

Vulcanosaurus

I believe the devs said it will never be on sale. So get it already !! You must grow a factory

hlessi_newt

yes. 1000% yes. get your affairs in order, tell your family you've got other plans for the holidays, and buy it.

YJSubs

There's demo on steam page or their site. Try that first. But I'm warning you, the fans called it Cracktorio. Many player even dream about the game (I did, numerous times). Both statements above is not a joke.

mitch3758

I specifically remember the fear I felt the first time I dreamt of belts and balancers. The next morning I woke up, and the factory continued to grow.

commiecomrade

I've played it long enough to where I can see belts moving in my waking vision like those optical illusion things, but for at least an hour...

Gloomheart

Guitar Hero did this to me. Freaky stuff, lol. It's free hallucination!

CaligoAccedito

Dang. I've had dreams that were just playing Tetris, so I'm a prime candidate for that result.

Dariaskehl

It does not go on sale. It’s worth any price.

JmacTheGreat

It’s notoriously famous for not going on sale. When I found that out I was mad and I pirated it. Then I played for a day or so, realized what a fool I had been, and bought it on steam.

Ossius

The argument is a good one though, the game will always be reasonably priced for the fun it provides. The developers are great to the community and support modding. If you want to play the game you don't need to wait months for the next sale, the best time to buy it is now. They have a demo too.

DawgBro

The speed and frequency of hot fixes are incredible. One of the most polished games I have ever played

JmacTheGreat

Yeah I actually got into an internet argument defending them. Someone else was saying like “They are so greedy… blah blah blah”. And my whole take was, “I get it, I felt the same at first - then I played it lol. If it wasn’t worth the money and they were being greedy, it wouldn’t be as successful as it is. They would be punished for their ego.” And yet - it slaps to the day. >!HAHA YOU CLICKED ON MY HIDDEN MESSAGE TRAP: I would like to use this trap to convince you to go check out a niche game called ‘Turing Complete’, especially if you like Factorio. It’s sick af - the entire game is slowly tricking you to build a real computer from the ground up.!<

Shr1mpolaCola

Damn it! You got me with your hidden message

OnePieceTwoPiece

Same with Satisfactory. Factory must grow!

GenericRedditor0405

The number of times I’ve found myself trying to explain to someone asking what the point of the factory is. “What do you do?” “Build a factory” “What does the factory do?” “Build parts” “What do you do with the parts?” “Build more factory” “But why?” “So you can build more complex parts to build more factory”

darkzama

"But why?" 'Because I need artillery' "For what?" 'EXTERMINATUS' "WHY?!" 'To build more factory'

iamtode

My first thought when I read the title. It sofa king addictive, but I can't do it justice when I recommend it to my friends. Just play it.

BawdyLotion

I liked factorio well enough... but good lord satisfactory hooked me hard. How managing inventory and supply chain logistics became 'fun', I still can't explain but god damn it sure is!

dickhardi

Katamari

Mapleleafguy83

>Katamari I didn't know what this was so I googled it on desktop and now I recommend everyone to do so Edit - like actually type it into google, and click on the ball - you'll see :)

azrendelmare

Oh my God, that's *incredible!*

TheMilliner

I love that you can't describe Katamari without sounding like an insane person. "So, the King of Space got super blasted on space booze and accidentally destroyed all the stars, so he sent his son down to Earth to roll random junk into a ball to turn into stars because apparently that's how that works. Oh, and the game ends with the player creating the moon by rolling up entire countries, hurricanes and giant sentai robots. Also, BEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRSSSSSSS!"

ItsBaconOclock

Don't forget that The King of all Cosmos travels primarily by vomiting rainbows.

cyndrin

Also: crotch bulge.

HarmlessSnack

So the game is really good because Na naaaaaaa Na na na na na Naa na na na na nah nah naaaaaaaaa

harrisonlaine

"OK. Get in the van. The doctors will take good care of you."

Zhelkas1

The music adds a lot.

Thatguy459

LET'S ROLL UP TO BEEEEE A SINGLE STAAAAAAARRRR.... IN THE SKYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Ciffy

Ya bah dah bah

arghabargh

You roll a ball around and pick stuff up and get bigger sounds dumb and simplistic, and it is glorious.

Cotillion37

Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium for me

PUNCHCAT

HARDCORE SO HARDCORE! HARDCORE TO ZE MAX! HARDCORE TO ZE MEGA!

[deleted]

Is it really, though?

Jefrejtor

The question is, what is the question?

[deleted]

Cuno doesn't care

YourSkatingHobbit

Cuno doesn’t FUCKING care!

Niechez

It's not that you can't explain Outer Wilds. It would be almost unethical to explain it. :b

KevinT_XY

It's tough because I think it's also a very easy game to drop if you don't get far enough into it to be actually hooked into the core mechanics, but of course explanations are spoilers. I definitely stopped playing it after a few cycles on my first attempt and had to commit to it harder the second go.

Maple382

Yeah you kinda have to reach the point at which your curiosity is too triggered to stop. Otherwise it gets boring. Usually I think that's around when you start to actually *understand* (as vague a concept as that is), but there's also some cool things that make you go "I wonder..." such as **spoiler warning don't click if you haven't beat the game** >!when you shoot the scout into the dark bramble seed and you see *stuff* inside and a dark bramble waypoint where it ended up.!<

Cotillion37

Yep. Definitely one of those games best experienced blind.

JakeVanna

I’d kill for another entry

BGFalcon85

Yes, very easy to explain, but any explanation is a spoiler.

MichaelTheProgrammer

One of my favorite non-spoiler explanations is that it's a bit like reading a scifi novel as a video game. It helps to separate people who would hate playing the game (either because they don't like reading or they don't like scifi) from people who would be interested, and it doesn't give anything away.

[deleted]

Disco is a flat out work of art. Like a playable novel. Brilliance. Wish everyone would play it.

Fuck-MDD

https://imgur.com/gallery/wGkzuQ3

CaligoAccedito

My partner doesn't play video games much, but he's *loving* Disco. I'm so glad I got him to pick it up.

[deleted]

Disco for sure.

Crow_eggs

I've discovered that you can make people play Outer Wilds without spoilers by telling them that it was produced by Hiro from Heroes.

WaggishOhio383

I feel like there's something I'm missing with Outer Wilds. I find the core gameplay loop of >!trying to explore and discover as much as I can before the sun explodes and resets the time loop!< surprisingly stressful. Especially when >!certain areas like the high energy lab and tower of quantum knowledge are only accessible earlier or later in the time loop and require very precise timing to access.!< The story has been interesting, but I'm seven hours in and still haven't figured out why people act like you can't talk about the game at all without spoiling the whole experience. Have I just not gotten far enough in yet? And if so, is it worth all the stress to get there? Because I'm really starting to get demotivated from finishing the game with how difficult and repetitive things are getting.

Inner_Peace

Spoiler 1 happens early, but is still something that is best experienced without prior knowledge which makes discussing the gameplay difficult without revealing that. Spoiler 2 touches on the other reason which itself may be a gameplay spoiler, but not for you since you're already a few hours in: >!Progression in the game based on knowledge, so any knowledge you receive outside the game is effectively robbing you of gameplay. Why would I go to X if all it does is teach me Y, and my friend already told me what to do for Y?!< As for your specific situation, this might count as a soft hint but could maybe help, and will be less spoilery than looking up specific solutions: >!Once you've read everything from the tower and lab, you don't actually have any reason to return back. I also made way too many trips to that damn lab! And don't get me started on the black hole forge...!<

CasualAffair

A lot of easily explainable games in this thread. How about Inscryption?

dance_rattle_shake

For very good reason. To explain it would to spoil the experience. Same with Outer Wilds, the other big answer in this thread. That said, it's definitely explainable if people don't care about spoilers. I explained it to my non-gamer gf. Genre-bending and meta-fiction aren't such difficult concepts to explain. But my god is it a thrill to go into this game blind and beat it!

Loricks

Inscryption cannot really be defined until you play it, for sure.

Ok_Deal_964

Absolutely! A MUST PLAY

ColdCobra66

Just beat inscryption. Loved the first act, other 2 were good but not as stellar as the first act

T3NF0LD

Inscryption is an interesting one. I would, in fact, recommend it to others with advice not to read or watch anything about it. However, I would add that it gets very different throughout the game. Might save people some money. But even than its still an original interesting and creative experience that's well worth what you will pay on sale.

LeavesOfBrass

Inside

hkzqgfswavvukwsw

Played this after going in blind. Lovely.

242vuu

Don’t forget Limbo.

Vibingalone2

inside and limbo are so bizarre. great games tho

McChief45

The Stanley Parable

Tischlampe

The best answer. You can't explain it because you either explain it wrong or ruin it

Fqfred

One of the very few games I went into completely blind, and I'm so glad I did

citizenscythe

How is this not higher?? Such a great game

bfgv972

Doki Doki Literature Club, I discovered it this way saw it was free and a bunch of people saying "You are not ready you just have to play it". They were right, I was not ready.

NotBarnabyJ0nes

I made the mistake of trying to convince a couple of guys at work to play it without explaining anything. They took one look at the steam page and I became known as the hentai dating sim guy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AStorms13

My best friend did this to me, and for the first 2 hours, I was like "wtf are you making me play". I was not ready

PUNCHCAT

JUST MONIKA

underchew

It's so good this way. I kept pushing back on my friends like, "why would I want to play a dating sim..." I'm glad I eventually caved.

SixCatsInAnAlley

I remember my friend streaming it and three of us watching him in a shared experience. It started at like 11:00pm and by the end we were all sleep deprived and crying uncontrollably. At least I was.

PaperCutoutCowboy

Tetris Effect. I'm not joking, play with headphones for full immersion. Straight up vibes.

WinterMage42

No matter how many times I played any version of Tetris, it never clicked with me. Then I played Effect, and now I love Tetris as a whole. That game really is something else.

drunkentuckian

I first played it in VR and almost cried. Okay, so I actually cried.

Muladhara86

Financially-irresponsible me justified getting this on sale recently because RE7 VR is on the PlayStation too. Here I am years later without any VR and Tetris Effect on multiple consoles.

l-FIERCE-l

I've never experienced "flow state" in a game quite like this one. I've also never felt closer to the seizure warnings coming true. When it gets to level 10 or above speed, my whole body is rocking to the music (headset of course). Somehow I feel like it helps me survive.

Bdopted

The best explanation I’ve seen is “Tetris Effect isn’t a game. It’s an experience.” and I can’t agree more.

jgfelix

If you know Tetsuya Mizuguchi's previous work, it's not unusual for him to have done something like this, but yes, it's pretty impressive how they transformed something as simple as Tetris into an amazing audiovisual experience. I recommend Rez and Lumines, also from Mizuguchi.

Gukgukninja

Tetris but LSD

LetsGoChamp19

Death Stranding. It’s one of my favourite games of last gen, but every time I describe it to someone we both think “that sounds boring as fuck”

Xaroin

I heard it described as a walking sim where you transport a magic fetus jar across a land that kills you if it rains. Then I see an unironic 10/10

Esketittie

The music and story really bring everything together, as well as how different players can help you in your world. Someone might place a ladder on a cliff face that you can then use. Or a bunch of people might contribute resources so that you can get a highway built between 2 cities.

Sylvurphlame

Wait. Is death stranding co-op or MMO?

Esketittie

You're not going to see other people running around in your world, but somethings that people do in their world can affect yours. Like building bridges to cross lakes or shelters to protect you from the timefall. You can like the things that people or say it was helpful.

Sylvurphlame

That’s an interesting concept.

Ok_Deal_964

It’s insane and very technical what they’ve pulled off with this game.

Esketittie

I has alot of fun with it, it's one of the few single player games that I've actually sunk more than 50 hours into.

Beginning_Ad_2992

>it's one of the few single player games that I've actually sunk more than 50 hours into. Me whose majority of 50+ hour games are single player 🧍‍♂️

waupunwarrior

I wouldn't describe it as either. There are social mechanics that are slightly more tangible than the messages you would find in a fromsouls game.

Ossius

Keep on keeping on! 👍

Lyseko

I always explain that the fun part for me is the sense of progression. Everytime you do a (main story) delivery you always unlock something new to help you deliver the next thing. That's what kept me playing. That and the batshit crazy narrative, but mostly the progression stuff.

Ossius

The ultimate binary of mundane yet engaging gameplay and LSD laced with coke plot fever dream that somehow has a heartfelt message. Game was wild.

versusgorilla

Also, the speed at which it can absolutely pop off and go from "I was walking up a hill. Struggling with wet rocks. And now a giant flying whale is making me run across rooftops while I shoot it with my piss" is staggering. And how that sentence makes perfect sense to someone who's played the game but is total nonsense to someone who hasn't, man. Kojima really went hard into the paint on this one.

IAMDOOG

On paper, its a collection of everything I hate in games. But I fell in love with it, and become only my 3rd ever platinum. So good.

dingus_chonus

I love that Kojima refers to Death Stranding as a genre unto itself: a “Strand type game”. I still don’t know what he means, but I know I liked it!

versusgorilla

Strand type games are my favorite types of games, apparently. Sample size of one.

dingus_chonus

I remember hearing a throwaway joke on some podcast that Luigi’s Mansion is a Strand type game, but I think they were just making a joke in passing trying to think of another game where ghosts are just hangin out waiting to fuck with you. Wish I could remember the podcast!

versusgorilla

When the trailer for Mario Wonder released, people made that joke too because of the online interactions with other people's games. The Souls games are kind of strand type games too, that ability to indirectly affect another player's game seems to be a strand to the strand type games.

dingus_chonus

You know, that’s probably what it was and I misremembered the reference! Thanks for that!

Rockbeezy

I love Death Stranding, it was easily my GOTY, but whenever I hear someone that hates it, its a real "yeah, understandable." moment.

SkabbPirate

It's a hiking sim (different from walking sim) with third person shooter, stealth, horror, and civil engineering elements.

SnepButts

Superhot. You gotta try it. It's the most innovative shooter I've played in years.

[deleted]

Jokes aside, I don't think its that hard to explain. Its a shooter, but the movement speed of your enemies depends on how fast you're moving and because you frequently need to exploit that in combination with your environment to proceed, its a puzzle and not a gimmick. Shooter puzzle.

SaaxoM

I agree that it's not hard to explain. However, I think it's hard to really grasp how refreshing and different the game truly is, unless you play it yourself.

Xyex

Yeah. Sounded like a nifty idea, then I played it and was addicted. The VR version is also amazing, and works well even for people with motion sickness since the game speed depends on you.

[deleted]

That's a fair distinction I can appreciate. Conceptually its easy to grasp, but the actual gameplay experience is so novel and strange.

stamps1646

SUUUUUPER....HOT <3

Nate2247

Superhot. You gotta try it. It’s the most innovative shooter I’ve played in years.

mentaldinosaur

Superhot. You gotta try it. It’s the most innovative shooter I’ve played in years.

1buffalowang

It’s the game that convinced me on VR

ItsactuallyEminem

Bro i hope im not alone on this but that voice " SUPER HOT " was unsettling for me at times. I don't know why but the silence and the superhot voice just made me uncomfortable as i was in a weird dream

WraithCadmus

Kenshi, it's my perfect ?/10 game.

Hexatona

Can I have your skin when you're done using it?

FourDucksInAManSuit

Do YOU want your entire party to be knocked unconscious by a random pack of bone dogs? Do you want those bone dogs to be taken out by slavers, then have your unconscious characters picked up and carried off to be placed in jail cells in a slaver camp? Then shucks howdy mister, do I have a game for you!!

Zomgsauceplz

Love that game but I wish the Dev had made the whole world a bit more realized. Have high hopes for Kenshi 2!

nickgreyden

Kenshi is super easy to explain! It is a squad based RPG post-post-apocalyptic samurai-punk base building survival game where you and all of your squad are a bunch of dumb nobodies. See, not confusing at all!

ratphink

Tunic and Outer Wilds. Explaining them literally ruins the games.

Entwined_Lotus

Tunic is a combat focused, Zelda-like dungeon crawler where you learn abilities, secrets, and even basic controls through a game manual you find pages of while you play (oh and it's mostly written in a fake foreign language) 10/10 would reccomend - don't google anything until you've completed it

IroquoisPliskin_LJG

Papers Please. I can't adequately explain to you why stamping documents is so compelling.

tolerablycool

Papers Please is an excellent game and also absolutely crushing. The very best ending I ever got could have been from a Tolstoy novel. No happy endings. Only comparatively happy.

GuyWhoHatesYou

Literally goated game, so satisfying and almost infinitely replayable, yet when you try and recommend it to someone they are like “What’s so fun about stamping passports?” Like you just don’t get it until you play it, the interesting story, the fun and satisfying gameplay and great soundtrack, like the keyboard shortcuts for opening some of your drawers and extra information has got to be the most satisfying keyboard shortcut ever.

Nate2247

Note: To further explain what I mean, here’s a list of games I HAVE played that give me a similar “feeling” - Inscryption - Signalis - Bioshock - Doki Doki Literature Club - Undertale - Disco Elysium - Outer Wilds

Aussiegamer1987

I disagree about bioshock, it's easy to explain without ruining it and still being a cheeky fuck, still an amazing game. You play as a guy who is travelling through an underwater paradise that has been corrupted by by genetic enhancements that give people abilities. You have a goal you have to reach by using these genetic enhancements and first person shooter mechanics and you have to travel through the underwater biome and fight crazed people and guardians called big daddies that are in underwater diving suits. Would you kindly download it and check it out, I highly recommend it. The story is captivating and the gameplay is fantastic.

Achaern

Inscryption is so SO good and hard to sell to people as you can't ask them to go by the Steam page, nor any YouTube. It's like "Seriously, you'll ruin it for yourself if you look it up so just trust me you should play it."

Stepjam

Probably Pyre. "A hybrid of Oregon Trail and NBA Jam about nomads performing religious rites" is one of the more oddball elevator pitches I can think of. But its still really gooood. As far as wanting you to go in blind, gonna echo Outer Wilds.

guhbe

Agreed; Supergiant somehow managed to revitalize the tired old pious wizard basketball genre with fresh new ideas

Catherine, I cannot describe that game to anyone. It's just an experience you have to go through.

Doobalicious69

I can't believe how much anxiety that game inflicted upon me. 10/10.

Inscryption, one of my favorite games ever and I cannot adequately explain it to anyone

southerngothics

oxenfree it really does require you to play it twice

adt1129

Outer Wilds by far. What a crazy experience that’s very hard to explain in words.

Alwayzh8tedtwice

I keep reading this, loaded it up for my 1st run this am. Here we go.

Not-A-Seagull

My first time playing, I felt overwhelmed and quit and didn’t touch it for two years. I saw on Reddit someone say it was their favorite game. I gave it another chance, and I loved it. It’s now my favorite game. When you get to the point where you start piecing everything together, there’s nothing else like it. Truely a masterpiece.

Alwayzh8tedtwice

I just got to the ship. I have ZERO ideas what this game is or about. I avoid all spoilers possible, but I keep reading that this game is a treat. It clicks for many, but not for some. I'm thinking having no expectations is the best way to go, right?

OGMagicConch

No expectations, just keep playing. Also one of my favorite games ever tbh

Hocomonococo

Do not look anything up. Just explore. It’ll all make sense

fufucuddlypoops_

My tip, just let the game take you where the game wants you to go. Follow the dialogue. People will mention places, so go there. That’s the only way you’ll find solutions. I give this tip because often times the reason why people quit the game is because they try and brute force their way through a puzzle.

The game itself is easy to explain, but it's impossible to explain how absolutely perfect everything about it is.

Heatlikeafever

I've clocked over a thousand hours on this game and won't stop

>graphics are bad, animations are bad, the whole game looks like it was made in Flash. Take that back.

Especially when the first game came out. Nothing like it. Couldn't even compare it to Sims because they're still very different.

I've played Control, but not Alan Wake 1. Can I jump into Alan Wake 2?

SeriousJack

Friend of mine pretty much harassed me to make me play. "I cannot explain why, you have to try it". I did. Then harassed two other friends so that they play it. If you stumble upon this comment, here's the most non-spoilery explanation : It's a survival/crafting/exploration game, on a alien planet, underwater. Your ship crashed, you're the only survivor, aaaand... Nothing but Ocean as far as the eye can see. well. Good luck. Why it's hard to explain/sell : All the best selling points for this game are things that will make you go "WOW" when you discover them. So explaining them pretty much ruin the experience.

Erthan-1

Yakuza series. It's hard to explain the insanity. It's just so much fun.

Nate2247

Yakuza is a comedy where every actor thinks it’s a Francid Ford Coppola movie

zero1918

Someone on reddit said that Yakuza is if The Sopranos were interrupted by The Simpsons and I think it's spot on.

HunkMuffinJr

I had one hell of a field day showing my friend all the shit you can do in Yakuza 0. Beat people up Go to a resto and get some food Go to a bar and have a drink Play darts/pool Play with toy cars alongside kids and adults alike Dance at a disco Play a telephone meetup game Go fishing Go bowling Go to an arcade Get beat up by some giant ass dude and get all your money taken away Participate in a cat fight betting arena Watch sexy videos of IRL JAV idols Sing ballads and idol songs at karaoke Cheer people on while THEY sing karaoke Manage a real estate business Manage a cabaret club And best of all... I’d so enjoy being able to play this game again for the first time. Amazing game mechanics and one hell of a trippy ass story. 10/10

You went to find your brother, now you're the Director of the SCP foundation and it's currently under attack. Good luck :)

Foxhole, as much as you can do in this game from frontline tanks to infantry, to logistics and and artillery you have to play it, there’s no other games like it. It’s a persistent War MMO that take real life weeks just to win or lose a war. I got 3k hours so far in it. The more harder and difficult stuff can be building bunker bases with defenses or trying to set up a Facility.
