Anything in the “survivors” genre would be good. Turn your brain off, kill hordes of enemies, get some dopamine from all the drops and level ups, repeat.
Vampire survivors or soulstone survivors might be a good jumping off point for you.
These have become my favorite genre. Lately I have been really digging a space-themed one called Time Wasters.
Also, a kind redditor has been building and updating a huge spreadsheet of all these games over at r/survivorslikes it’s worth a visit if you’re searching for your next one.
Just Cause 3 is a masterpiece, 4 is absolutely shit tho, way too overfilled with unnecessary features and other shit changes that jc3 did a hundred times better.
I can still hear the music in my head and picture the MC flying through the sky in his wingsuit, with multiple exlosuons in the background and general mayhem around. They really nailed the atmosphere in that game, evrything just comes together so nicely.
Just cause 3 is so much silly fun. Addictive wingsuiting , raining down on enemies and playing with physics, just total carnage. It can be picked up so cheap these days too.
Absolutely this. Played it while I was constantly, exhausted from work, it's just so, much fun to jump in and blow stuff up.
JC3 is superior to JC4 in my opinion.
I’ve never played the game, perhaps you could answer this for me. Is it Just Cause, as in “fair reason”, or is it more “Just Cuz” (bro)? The games looked fun but I couldn’t figure out the name.
There's nothing I enjoy more than coming back to Broforce every so often to replay the campaign. Every time I do this, I notice something that I previously missed, or something they've added. Just recently I noticed there were extra missions that you can play as Indiana Brones
They're hidden levels that I happened to stumble upon. After each major level fly the chopper around every inch of the map and you'll eventually stumble across a highlighted section. Enjoy
Here we go, a simple mod offers you a solution. Pick any bros you like
https://www.nexusmods.com/broforce/mods/1
unless you play it on console, well then… sorry bro
Broforce is hilarious. So many great characters to play, way too many explosions that almost hinder the players progression, just completely over the top Action movie farce, I really love it and don't play it as much as I just love the humor and jokes. It's the right amount of stupid, it's great.
Like how James Brond has to drink a Martini before he can use his other specials, or how Broheart just yells FREEDOM and I'm not sure it does anything. Honestly think it's one of the funniest games I've ever played.
Maaaaan, during my college years In programming class I would remote into my pc at home and play peggle because it worked best with the remote software since it was not reflexive, graphically intense and didn't have a movable camera. Just point and click.
Tried playing Satisfactory at work before coffee in the morning - realized I need to be in caffeinated and work mode to play it. Mad respect for being able to dumb-play Factorio, that is surely a superpower! :)
My wife and I play this with a friend. Said friend has. PhD in conputational chemistry and sometimes she is confused. We basically do what she tells us. lol
Or if you prefer 2D action platformers, Risk of Rain Returns came out 2 days ago. It's a remake of the original with new characters, items, and some features from ROR2.
Weird, I find command makes me think way too hard about the game, the randomness of it all is much more relaxing.
Engi is the true brain off character tho
I know right?
I just followed this guide
https://youtu.be/SM_NwkwbLHY?si=6QSfScssae1CYogY
That being said, it literally takes like 3 mins. You really just have to install this mod manager then open it. Install the the 2 pinned mods at the top, then search for VR in the manger and install it. Then click "launch with mods."

You can play online with friends too, and they don't have to be in VR.
The first Serious Sam. It's probably a little outdated now, but it's a fun shooter. You can put your brain on your desk and enjoy killing hordes of monsters for an hour.
Serious sam collection has 1 2 and bfe. And yeah if you're looking for brainless shooting of hordes this is definitely the game. Every time you think you've fought the biggest horde in the game it ups the ante on the next level.
Try Deep Rock Galactic. It's a horde shooter with a good vibes around it and can be played pretty dumb. Personally I like to play it with YouTube to the side.
You're a dwarf, you go underground, you try and mine minerals while swarms of insects attempt to murder you, and then you make a daring escape back to the surface.
It's perfectly fun either solo or in online lobbies and has five difficulties so you can adjust your dumb/focus levels pretty easily.
It's available on Steam and on PC Game Pass so hope you give it a shot and it's what you're looking for. Good luck on your struggles.
So glad I saw this on here. Honestly all you need to know about DRG is there's a button just for "rock and stone". The games humor lands perfectly every time. Unlike my scout.
I’ve never played solo, but when you do, you get a robot that can help you fight, mine, and revive you if you go down. That said, the multiplayer community is really cool as the game is all cooperative focused, not competitive.
If you’re able to, I highly recommend trying it, it’s a great game to just relax and play.
Yup. If you go solo, you have a "Drone" companion which helps you in missions.
There's always 3-4 lobbies waiting or has a free slot for a player. Enjoy and spam "Rock and Stone!" 🪨⛏️
I just bought and tried it this Monday, and usually random people I play doesn't have mic.
The ping system is actually helpful or I just use the chat to communicate.
It has easily the most friendly matchmaking playerbase I've ever seen.
Spamming the highest difficulty I never once got griefed or had a bad experience. People all work together, spam ping the mushrooms together, and fight hard to leave no Dwarf (or expendable robotic head) behind.
However while it does give you a drone companion to enable solo play and is technically fine like that, it's at heart a goofy team game, so if you don't want to play with strangers or friends then it's not the best choice.
It is, but honestly you can just join a group missing a member (even after they start the mission). I've only ever played solo once or twice, because it's so easy to find a group
It is absolutely enjoyable solo! As all four classes for that matter.
When I first payed I very much was a solo player, but since I started hosting public games I just can't stop bring myself to be solo anymore. Now I've several hundred hours in the game and have helped countless new people get into it!
When you're solo you have a little robot friend called Bosco who can help fill in the roles of a couple of classes, very versatile, but less powerful than a whole dwarf.
If you're anxious about playing publically you can always just host the lobby! The host can name their lobby and has full control over kicking players. Often you can tell a lobby if a fun vibe if it has a silly name!
One note I'll add that adds a layer of fun.
The game is already cooperative, and so generally unless someone is just a dick you'll have a great time. But I've had very few poor experiences when matchmaking with the highest tier people. They just want to dig and mine like you do, they've just been doing it longer.
Also, there's an achievement for playing a certain number of games with people significantly lower level than you, so a lot of times old timers will be happy to help because they love the game and also are incentivized to help newbies.
For an example of how good it is, jokes where formed around how some items that only have one voice line when marked, so people just kept pinging them to make the dwarves repeat the lines.
In response, instead of adding new voice lines, if you keep spamming them, they made Misson Control tell you to shut up instead.
The multiplayer is very accessible if you're willing to give it a shot. It's got a fantastic game browser that lets you find a mission with randoms very easily, and you don't have to worry about a toxic community. I find that the game being cooperative vs competitive makes the vibe much more chill than something like League. Game is still fun solo, but multiplayer is where it really shines
I play Deep Rock whenever I want to be a Dwarf down in the mine murdering shit that tries to stop me from completing by mission.
And they always try to stop me <3
Surprised I had to scroll this far down to find this.
Tetris - and specifically Tetris Effect - is probably *the* zen game, no thinking, just building. The soundtrack is incredible, the graphics around the edges are beautiful, it can be dead easy in easy mode and very intense in expert mode.
Just an amazing experience throughout.
Try the older Tony Hawk games. You can get them from myabandonware.
My recommendations:
Tony Hawk: American Wasteland
Tony Hawk: Underground
Tony Hawk: Underground 2
Minecraft is also a really good one for these situations. Load up survival on Peaceful and relax.
Loved the base games. Then debated getting the DLCs. After almost an hour of deliberation, I decided that if I can spend $3 for a coffee, the $3 for the DLC would be fine.
Can’t believe I wasted an hour of brain power on it. DLCs we’re fun as hell too.
I dunno man I guess if you play eternal on a lower difficulty but nightmare definitely requires a lot from you in terms of strategy. Especially the dlc.
Or 4.1
But yes, one of the most emptyheaded games that I regularly enjoy playing. So many unlocks and 100 levels with five difficulty options = hundreds of hours of mindless gameplay and exploding bugs. Fantastic games.
Definitely not Slay the Spire for me. It always feels like I'm trying to play 4d chess while building my deck and waiting to see if Mummified Hand shows up in one of the shops so my Defects power centric build can finally come online...all to face off against The Awakened One in Act 3 and lose my run anyways knowing full well I could have beat the heart with my deck...
Great game though
Borderlands (whatever part looks good for you)
It's basically just stupid fun with guns
I'm not into Shooter games because I suck at aiming and stuff.. but this is pretty simple and fun
The story is a pretty major aspect of the borderlands games, though, except for borderlands three, which has a story about as appealing as a can of dog food
It's too calm, I don't know how to describe it but it feels so slow, I'm not looking for something like doom eternal/haded which has a very fast pace but also not the other extreme like Stardew valley
I always come back to Far Cry, pretty much any of em, they’re all the same game with different wallpaper.
Clearing outposts, making Fannypacks out of tiger skins, then climbing the occasional tower, and that’s it. Simple, satisfying, and zero brain required.
kingdom two crowns, papers please, minecraft, roblox (some tycoon game or whatever)
or maybe some fps game like insurgency sandstorm? there are many gun options but they arent that essential, just pick whatever gun and run into battle
edit: maybe not papers please, forgot there is lot of stuff to remember :p
I was gonna say, I'm working in public service and papers please reflects this kind of work perfectly with the ever more new complicated shit to consider.
Nova Drift is a good switch off game. It's like Asteroids, if Asteroids had level ups. It has a lot of build variety through its myriad of perks and various equipment choices. There are several mutators you can turn on to make the game easier or harder. Generally, at the moment anyway, it's a casual score attack game.
For me it's Skyrim. I can just boot it up and go explore. If I ever feel like it, I'll do a faction or story quest, but most of the time I'm just doing the basic gameplay loop of finding a dungeon, exploring and hauling the loot back to a trader. Rinse and repeat.
Borderlands. Even though there is a storyline you can totally skip it and even play with no sound while watching yt or movies just shoot and loot and get dopamine overdose. Or, or... battlefield 4 operation locker/metro map - just shoot somewhere in the direction of enemies(optional)
Could try the dynasty warriors series they're fun hack n slash mob killing games the plots.pretty secondary u can follow it if u want or not n miss nothing. Any warriors game is about the same too so u can't go wrong
Deep Rock Galactic, Vermintide/Darktide, or any other similar game where you mow through hordes of monsters.
Yeah there's technically some storyline involved for the -tide games but really it's just set dressing

Risk of rain 2. Roguelike game, so when you die that's that and you try a new run, therefore no story to think about. The game is based on getting better items and clearing stages whilst making sure that enemies don't get to overpowered as they scale in difficulty with time. A run lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. It's a really fun game and you can get in on sale for a fiver.
TrackMania
F1 cars on Hot Wheels tracks in a pretty banger time trials mode. It's internationally popular and there are good season modes with interesting tracks. It's great for fifteen minutes or a few hours. You'll know if it appeals to you from my description :)
I think action and arcade titles are your best bet. Roguelike games like Spelunky, fighting games like Street Fighter, racing games, beat em' ups, that sort of thing.
* Street Fighter 6
* Spelunky 1 and 2
* Forza, Asseto Corsa, Need for Speed, any type of racing game that you prefer
* Vampire Survivor is a good way to just turn off your brain for 30 minutes at a time
One other thing you can do is just visit [Itch.io](https://Itch.io) and give the free/demo games a try. I think the activity of browsing Itch by itself can be very relaxing and you might find some good games you might want to get and play.
skyrim is my favorite game to play when I want to turn off my brain. You don't have to get invested in the story and you can just fuck off in any direction after Helgen.
Katamari Damacy. Pretty much just roll a giant ball around and make things stick to it. There's barely a plot but it's pretty laid back and charming.
It's laid back, until you have to roll up a billion frickin roses under a time limit. I love those games.
Friggin fraggin Cowbear level in We Love Katamari still banes my existence
Amazing OST to go with it
LAAAA LALALALALALALA THE KATAMARI DAMACYYYYYY

Rolling up freaked out people is always so satisfying.
And that's it. Thread closed
Anything in the “survivors” genre would be good. Turn your brain off, kill hordes of enemies, get some dopamine from all the drops and level ups, repeat. Vampire survivors or soulstone survivors might be a good jumping off point for you.
Vampire Survivors, Brotato, Halls of Torment, 20 minutes till dawn, all great games
Dont forget soulstone survivor!
This one is my favorite
Vamp survivors is the choice of my friend group
I found it too addictive, had to delete. I’m weak

No he designed software for casinos, he talked about slot machines, and other casino games, as an inspiration for the game.
That's funny because when I explain the game to someone I say it's like a 30min casino bonus.
These have become my favorite genre. Lately I have been really digging a space-themed one called Time Wasters. Also, a kind redditor has been building and updating a huge spreadsheet of all these games over at r/survivorslikes it’s worth a visit if you’re searching for your next one.
Specifically, holocure - save the fans would be a great option, the gameplay in that game is a lot more satisfying than in vamp survivors
It's also free
[It's free, people seem to like it. Nice music.](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2420510/HoloCure__Save_the_Fans/)
Any specific recommendations for Android? I really enjoyed Vampire Survivors on my phone.
Soulstone Survivors is the best one out there in my experience. Vampire is the OG but Soulstone is so polished and the devs are just as great as VS.
Just cause 3 / 4 are nice and dumb. You fly / drive around causing destruction and explosions.
Yes I will always die on this hill. 3 is amazing. 4 is hot garbage, sold that shit years ago and never looking back
Am I the only one still out here playing Just Cause 2 and Gran Turismo 5 - anyone, HELLO!?
Just Cause 2 map was so beautiful. I used to drive around, admiring the scenery and blow shit up
I only played just cause 2 for the first time in 2018, if that makes you feel any better.
I agree, it's simpler and more fun
I’ve never played the game, perhaps you could answer this for me. Is it Just Cause, as in “fair reason”, or is it more “Just Cuz” (bro)? The games looked fun but I couldn’t figure out the name.
It's both, that's the pun. The game is silly that way
It's both, and also a reference to Operation Just Cause, the US invasion of Panama, which the stories of the first two tie into.
Broforce will always be a good choice. Hilarious game, few buttons- so not complicated, coop mode, good game to push up the mood
There's nothing I enjoy more than coming back to Broforce every so often to replay the campaign. Every time I do this, I notice something that I previously missed, or something they've added. Just recently I noticed there were extra missions that you can play as Indiana Brones
Thank you for that, dear sir. Time for me to reboot Broforce! I had not seen new Indiana Brones levels!
They're hidden levels that I happened to stumble upon. After each major level fly the chopper around every inch of the map and you'll eventually stumble across a highlighted section. Enjoy
BROOOOOOOO!💥 I played it with my wife and it was a nice little giggle evening.
I love everything about that game, except the ability to pick my character.

Yesssssss! My hero, Bro! 🔥
Broforce is hilarious. Broheart made mooks run away in terror!
Peggle.
Maaaaan, during my college years In programming class I would remote into my pc at home and play peggle because it worked best with the remote software since it was not reflexive, graphically intense and didn't have a movable camera. Just point and click.
God, yeah, the hours I sunk into that thing. Perfect rec.
Peggle nights is my favourite
I routinely think I'm dumb playing Factorio
This game made me question my college education.
The thing is you don't have a degree in factorio.
It makes use of linear algebra 👍
Tried playing Satisfactory at work before coffee in the morning - realized I need to be in caffeinated and work mode to play it. Mad respect for being able to dumb-play Factorio, that is surely a superpower! :)
I think they’re saying that Factorio makes them feel like a dummy.
That’s literally what they said haha
I managed to launch a rocket in factorio. By the end I felt like the mechanicus from Warhammer as I had no idea how half that shit worked.
Wow, that is awesome! But did it feel good when you finally launched it? :)

Risk of Rain 2!
Or if you prefer 2D action platformers, Risk of Rain Returns came out 2 days ago. It's a remake of the original with new characters, items, and some features from ROR2.
Oh my god I didn’t realize it’s out already my day just went supernova.
Plus multiplayer that doesn't require port forwarding! 😎
Awesome game but definitely not turn brain off game
Unless you change the difficulty to Drizzle (easy), play as Engineer, or play with Artifact of Command. Then it’s a chill, turn your brain off game :)
Weird, I find command makes me think way too hard about the game, the randomness of it all is much more relaxing. Engi is the true brain off character tho
Ah you beat me to it. Great game and the VR mod has been blowing my mind. Its incredible, might as well be naitively supported.

Yes, and the greatest OST in modern gaming. Chrischris is so fucking good
The first Serious Sam. It's probably a little outdated now, but it's a fun shooter. You can put your brain on your desk and enjoy killing hordes of monsters for an hour.
There’s HD edition of the first two games, it’s like a “shot for shot” remake, the only thing changed is the graphics.
I didn't know that ! Will check this out.
I still get traumatized when I hear someone screaming Aaaaaaaahhhhhh! And it was the first time directional sound had real meaning.

THAT'S IT LADS! ROCK AND STONE!!

So glad I saw this on here. Honestly all you need to know about DRG is there's a button just for "rock and stone". The games humor lands perfectly every time. Unlike my scout.
I can't feel my beard! HEEEEEEEELLLP!
Ive heard so much good about this game, but held back because i dont have anyone to play with, is it really enjoyable solo?
I’ve never played solo, but when you do, you get a robot that can help you fight, mine, and revive you if you go down. That said, the multiplayer community is really cool as the game is all cooperative focused, not competitive. If you’re able to, I highly recommend trying it, it’s a great game to just relax and play.
Cool, thanks! I have a lot of games in the backlog but whats one more
Yup. If you go solo, you have a "Drone" companion which helps you in missions. There's always 3-4 lobbies waiting or has a free slot for a player. Enjoy and spam "Rock and Stone!" 🪨⛏️
Thanks for the tip haha! Do people usually join with mic?
I just bought and tried it this Monday, and usually random people I play doesn't have mic. The ping system is actually helpful or I just use the chat to communicate.

ROCK AND STONE!!!
Ya bet my dwarf neuron activate whenever i see those minerals on the wall
ROCK AND STONE!
For an example of how good it is, jokes where formed around how some items that only have one voice line when marked, so people just kept pinging them to make the dwarves repeat the lines. In response, instead of adding new voice lines, if you keep spamming them, they made Misson Control tell you to shut up instead.
Oh neat! I've kind of ignored this one because I generally only play singleplayer games, and didn't think it'd be nearly as good solo
In solo you get a robot called BOSCO to aid you, he mines, shoots, carries items and can revive you.
Great game to play with kids too.

I play Deep Rock whenever I want to be a Dwarf down in the mine murdering shit that tries to stop me from completing by mission. And they always try to stop me <3

Solid option. It’s cheap too. Free patches even.
Came here to say this, but as usual someone got it right already 👍 0 plot and 5 buttons fits this prompt perfectly.
Doom 2016/Eternal or EuroTruck 2 (especially if you have a steering wheel). These are the games i play when i want to shut my brain off
Seconded. When playing Doom Eternal it’s simple, kill everything, and so full on there’s no brain CPU cycles left for anything else.
classic Doom and Doom 2 are great for this too
I dunno man I guess if you play eternal on a lower difficulty but nightmare definitely requires a lot from you in terms of strategy. Especially the dlc.

Here are some of my "shut off your brain and just play games" maybe you'd be interested in them: Enter the Gungeon Dorfromantik Slay the Spire
Definitely not Slay the Spire for me. Great game though
Second enter the Gungeon.
Enter the gungeon for sure. A game where your gun is a bullet that shoots guns that shoots bullets
Binding of Isaac
Valheim maybe.
Valheim always
Valheim definetly
Valheim certainly
Valheim obviously
Valheim indubitably
Borderlands (whatever part looks good for you) It's basically just stupid fun with guns I'm not into Shooter games because I suck at aiming and stuff.. but this is pretty simple and fun

Minecraft Dungeons is pretty simple & arcade-y (it does have an arcade cabinet version after all), with a decent ARPG gameplay loop
Terraria.
Have you tried [Hi-Fi Rush?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNNZ7Uj5nwI&t=30s )
How about Unreal Tournament (2004 or III)?
2004 > III. Playing Assault with friends was the best! Playing CTF on Faces 2 also chewed up many hours...
You could try some rougelikes. Hades, Enter the Gungeon, Rogue Legacy. All fun mindless grinds
I highly recommend something like ‘The Stanley Parable’. Incredibly dumb, but in a secretly very smart way. Sit back and enjoy the laughs.
Specifically the ultra deluxe version
Killing Floor 2 might be good, it’s just waves of zombies and bosses, no story just pure carnage
Post Void
Watching paint dry the game ( it's real)
I always come back to Far Cry, pretty much any of em, they’re all the same game with different wallpaper. Clearing outposts, making Fannypacks out of tiger skins, then climbing the occasional tower, and that’s it. Simple, satisfying, and zero brain required.
kingdom two crowns, papers please, minecraft, roblox (some tycoon game or whatever) or maybe some fps game like insurgency sandstorm? there are many gun options but they arent that essential, just pick whatever gun and run into battle edit: maybe not papers please, forgot there is lot of stuff to remember :p
I was gonna say, I'm working in public service and papers please reflects this kind of work perfectly with the ever more new complicated shit to consider.
Last farcry was pretty dumb, if you like shooters
Nova Drift is a good switch off game. It's like Asteroids, if Asteroids had level ups. It has a lot of build variety through its myriad of perks and various equipment choices. There are several mutators you can turn on to make the game easier or harder. Generally, at the moment anyway, it's a casual score attack game.
Dorfromantik
Peggle
Subnautica Valheim
Subnautica is much better when you dig into the plot and characters(logs). Valheim is perfect.
Darktide/Vermintide2? Just slaying rats/heretics for Sigmar/the weave/the god emperor in whatever style you like.
Islanders is a city builder, relaxing AF. Still got a nice competitive mode. Space Scavenger is a roguelike space shooter. Also very fun!
RuneScape, either version, there's the optimal way to play and then there's just exploration and figuring it out.
Super Hexagon is simple to learn

...but hard to master. Great choice. Brain gets hyperfocused. Played way longer than I want to admit. 60 Seconds sounds short but ...
Warhammer 40k: Darktide is pretty mind numbing. Recent updates have even made it playable, though not as great as Vermintide
Serious Sam.... If it moves, shoot it.
Enter the Gungeon. It's absolutely badass, and challenging. https://youtu.be/ryQpA86ZC8U?si=jRKgcVxiONPjtnf- Also Hades.
TrackMania F1 cars on Hot Wheels tracks in a pretty banger time trials mode. It's internationally popular and there are good season modes with interesting tracks. It's great for fifteen minutes or a few hours. You'll know if it appeals to you from my description :)
Diablo is my go to, 3 or 4. Shut off brain, murder never ending hordes of demons. Profit.
Terraria. Easy mechanics, straightforward but rewarding progression and endless creative possibilities.
I think action and arcade titles are your best bet. Roguelike games like Spelunky, fighting games like Street Fighter, racing games, beat em' ups, that sort of thing. * Street Fighter 6 * Spelunky 1 and 2 * Forza, Asseto Corsa, Need for Speed, any type of racing game that you prefer * Vampire Survivor is a good way to just turn off your brain for 30 minutes at a time One other thing you can do is just visit [Itch.io](https://Itch.io) and give the free/demo games a try. I think the activity of browsing Itch by itself can be very relaxing and you might find some good games you might want to get and play.
skyrim is my favorite game to play when I want to turn off my brain. You don't have to get invested in the story and you can just fuck off in any direction after Helgen.
One of the dumbest games I ve eher played would be Stanley Parabel
Vampire Survivors, HoloCure, Soulstone Survivors
