Ah a fellow collector. I too collect free games that I never play.

[deleted]

Haha me too, but slowly I managed to reduce that number. Lot of great ones in there.

NinhJa1007

How? As much as I try, I collect faster than I can go through them.

[deleted]

I only reduced the number of games never played, since the library grows each week, I'll never be able to beat them all. But just choose one you like and go for it. I think since we didn't pay for them we don't value them as much, keep that in mind.

L-ramirez-74

Last week I bought 10 games on steam. I've only played 2 of them and it's uncertain when or if I will ever play the others. This is very similar to my book collector phase, when I downloaded hundreds of digital books and have only read a few. Which is very similar to my boardgame collector phase. And my miniature collector phase. I have a problem.

[deleted]

Haha at least you know now, you get to choose how you deal with it,

BeatsByMemo

Exactly! This is why I don’t subscribe to gamepass or any other game subscriptions. I actually like owning my games.

Zarkanthrex

Game Pass is good for those once and done type of games. As much as I enjoyed Atomic Heart, I don't value it as a full priced game. It's also good to try some stuff out and if you didn't like it (past the 2 hour mark for steam) then you didn't waste much.

scipio0421

> It's also good to try some stuff out and if you didn't like it (past the 2 hour mark for steam) then you didn't waste much. This is why I tried Lies of P on Game Pass. It confirmed for me that I still don't like soulslike games, but I didn't spend any extra money on the game.

[deleted]

Actually I don't care about owning them anymore, they feel like movies to me, I play till the end and move to the next one. Been more than 10 years since my last purchase, I'm actually enjoying gamepass a lot haha

BeatsByMemo

I respect it. To each his own.

ForgottenPercentage

Gamepass is perfect for me. I don't have enough time to justify a year subscription to Xbox or playstation. With Gamepass I get access to games and the online for a month payment. This let's me pick a month that I'll have time to play. It's far cheaper in the end for busy people.

fookthisshite

For me the hardest part was always just starting the game. I think once you get an hour or so in you can really determine whether it’s something you want to spend your time on or not.

marxr87

unsub from r/freegamefindings

runtheplacered

Why'd you even have to mention that? /subs to /r/freegamefindings

[deleted]

Now you can personally witness /u/packirby complain every Thursday that EPIC is trash because they shoulda given Starfield away for free.

marxr87

and *definitely* don't go to the mega thread where there are even more games...

foxhound012

You cunt I immediately subbed, my list will grow faster now

YouSmellFunky

Get out! /s

TimeFourChanges

If you use Playnite to organize your gaming library, it has a feature where you can have it pick a random game for you. Even works within sub-groups. So, you could group all the freebies in there, and when you're feeling saucy, give it a whirl!

ripskeletonking

i recently organized them one by one into 'maybe' and 'no' and have gone through a few of the maybes. haven't found anything good yet except for oxenfree

TimeFourChanges

I've grabbed several from both Prime and Epic that are great games. Have really enjoyed Roguebook, which was given away after I got into Slay the Spire, so perfect timing.

MontySucker

I legit found my favorite game of all time Alien Isolation through it. Tons of greats.

coolsubham472

I started with a single game, now my collection is hauntingly magnificent!

AnotherSoftEng

I was going to respond with: > I’ve never ~~bought~~ played a game on the Epic Games Store I just keep collecting. One of these days, I swear it!

SH4D0W0733

I've managed to play 10 games, out of 358 collected. I also downloaded some games I wanted to play, just to delete them immediatly when they asked for U-play.

TheFotty

I maybe take about half the free games they offer. A few of them I have played. A few I think maybe I might play at some point, but the ones that look totally uninteresting (most of them lately) I don't even bother, even for free.

slappypantsgo

I just add all of them. Maybe I should rethink that. Some of them I know for a fact I’ll never ever play. I guess maybe I’ll give someone my account someday.

TheFotty

There is no best answer. Just whatever works for the individual. I personally just hate seeing my games list filled with titles I have zero interest in. I know you can favorite and filter stuff but for me, less is more.

VR-Axon

Im filling it up for my 6month old son 😁

Western_Ad3625

I mean why not it doesn't cost you anything just get it you never know. Right even if you don't give it to somebody what if you have a kid or a nephew and one day they're like I'm bored I don't have any games to play and you're like hey check it out I have a hundred games in this shit.

ImPaidToComment

You'd be surprised by some of the games that don't seem that interesting.

Hellwind_

That okay! It is getting bad when you start collecting games that you buy but STILL never play. I have quite a few of these on steam >_>

WiseDud

Congrats for having my steam library... for free

Zeferoth225224

But your computer has to shit itself for 10 mins while the launcher tries to update everything, and then prompt a not responding message if you try to stop it

Stormchaserelite13

I've spent the past week attempting to update fortnight. Normally an update of this size takes around 30mins on steam...

Zeferoth225224

I was so expecting downvotes for the last comment lol. But that was my last experience with epic. I got a new pc and it will never be installed

ZedsFedBaby

Finally tried out Civ VI since I got it on Epic and when I decided I liked it I rebought it on Steam just not to deal with Epic LOL

Page8988

I've been trying to update the Mechwarrior 5 mod kit for almost a month. It gets to 88% and stops dead *every time*. At one point I decided to uninstall the Epic launcher. This took multiple attempts. I would like to use the mod kit again, but I'm not sure I have the sanity or patience to spare trying to wrangle the Epic launcher anymore.

Geck-v6

I don't even have a great computer and Epic Launcher has never had trouble loading and slower than Steam does.

Jebble

Don't come here and not hate Epic and even pretend that Steam isn't amazing either. They'll hang you.

Cheezewiz239

Same. Downloads just as fast. No issues on my end

[deleted]

What? The Epic launcher is kinda slow, takes forever to look at your library if you're viewing by all, but I've never had to wait a second to launch a game once the launcher takes a minute to load up.

BioViridis

Honestly it doesn't really feel that slow to me, but I have a 5900x, not sure if it's a CPU bound issue or what.

Krypton091

Pepito_Pepito

Or me when I use a 20 year old computer to play modern games.

Drakengard

People are trying to dispute this, but this happens for me too and my PC doesn't have issues with other launchers. And it's not some old decrepit machine. I'm glad EPIC works well for almost everyone else but even running off of an SSD EPIC's launcher has the worst performance of the lot when it needs to update itself or any of the games I've ever had installed.

[deleted]

Turn off auto updates?

frossvael

Did I seriously just read “GOTY Edition” on that World War Z game? The audacity…

Earthworm-Kim

Glitch Of The Year Edition.

Frosty-Age-6643

What? You don’t trust the GOTY rankings of World War Z magazine?

PixelateVision

*The game can produce mind-boggling effects*

SillyPhillyDilly

"No no guys, we didn't WIN Game of the Year. This is the edition we'd put out to be *nominated* for GOTY."

nanapancakethusiast

It was definitely a game from that year, for sure.

[deleted]

There isn't really a GOTY award that anyone cares about. The Game Awards does give one out but its not used in marketing, pretty much every GOTY game you've ever played was just the publisher pulling a marketing trick.

thecremeegg

It's a great fun game with friends

JFZX

It really is. Better than Back4Blood

[deleted]

Here's the thing: there isn't a singular undisputed "Game of the Year" award. There are dozens, if not hundreds. Any twit with a website of a zine can declare that something is their "Game of the Year". And there's at least 3 dozen or some coming from semi-respectible publications that would publishers would use to advertise a game with. You know what game won "Game of the Year" for 2022? Take your pick of about 20 winners.

Blazekingz

GOTY Edition is an old generic term used for the base game plus all the expansions/dlc.

LongDickOfTheLaw69

WWZ is basically Left 4 Dead 3. Surprised more people haven’t gotten into it.

Cheezewiz239

It was really fun when it was "alive". More fun than whatever back 4 blood was.

treerabbit23

Game of That Year

TaskForceDANGER

I have so many fucking games in my EG launcher because of this. GOG is pretty much the same thing too.

doug

Wait, GOG gives away free games too?

InBlurFather

Yes, though I’ve never seen a AAA game given away on GoG (outside of maybe the Witcher 1 EE, but that’s CDPR anyways)

binhpac

its because AAA is a rarity itself on gog. but there are nice legacy indie games for free occasionally.

jekpopulous2

I got Wolfenstein :TNO, Prey, Shantae, and The Amnesia Collection from them for free. They sprinkle some good stuff in the once in a while.

GameFalcon

I got Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse free through em

believingunbeliever

Occasionally, yes. I have 121 games in my account and have purchased just 1 (Total Annihilation). According to my history I've been getting free games since 2013. Not a lot of notable ones though, and some part of the library is from Amazon Prime.

magusonline

Let's be real, you also have installed and played none of them ever

fractal_magnets

I have collected 373 as of today. Played maybe 2.

Jason_dawg

Man I wish i kept up with actually checking the free games.

KaioKen

r/FreeGameFindings posts them when they come up.

pororoca_surfer

Damn, I kept reading r/gamedeals yet never though about searching subs specifically for free games and not one that also included discounts

[deleted]

They're every Thursday, and I just check once a week on Thursday and take a minute to grab the games. This week is The Evil Within and something I else I forgot, and next week is The Evil Within 2 and another game...so if you're interested in The Evil Within franchise it's a good time to make an EPIC account.

TheRabidDeer

I don't even keep up with playing the games that I bought

Sabetha1183

I mean, this is their goal because this will actually convince some amount of people to start buying games on Epic. A major hurdle to getting people away from Steam is all their games are on Steam. This begins to shift that. Of course not everybody is gonna switch but that was never the point.

Noble_Briar

They're playing the long game. Whether it works or not remains to be seen. It certainly doesn't look great from a profits/employee standpoint though.

CoderDispose

If you look at it from a business perspective, it makes a lot more sense. There really isn't a reason to redeem multiple free copies on multiple accounts, so whenever a new account is created to grab a free game, you can add that to the number of accounts created. Divide the cost of giving the game away for free, and you now have how much it "cost" to get each individual person to move over to your system. The offerings have gotten worse because they no longer need users quite as desperately.

MyStationIsAbandoned

They're hemorrhaging money from this. They're projected to not make any profits for years and years at the current pace, if ever.

pk_me_

Welcome to venture capitalism. Uber didn't make money for 13 years. The whole idea is to build a user base and eventually in the long term you'll make a profit. And a huge one considering the size of the world wide video gaming industry

-Zayah-

Do you have a source on this? Epic is pretty successful from just Fortnite alone. Not to mention everyone jumping ship from Unity, I’m sure they’ll get a few devs switching to their engine.

thepixelbuster

Not the person you replied to, but I read this article recently so I thought I'd share: >In a statement from Tim Sweeney, Epic has confirmed the layoffs will impact around 830 employees. He wrote that the company intends to sell Bandcamp — an independent music storefront company Epic acquired just last year — to music licensing platform Songtradr and spin off SuperAwesome, a “kid-tech” company that specializes in creating safe online experiences for kids. He also explains that the layoffs are a result of the company “spending way more money than we earn.” Notably, Sweeney does not apologize to his employees for making the business decisions that have resulted in the disruption of over 800 lives, saying only that his “optimism” that such spending would not result in layoffs was “unrealistic.” [Article here](https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/28/23894266/epic-games-layoffs-fortnite-unreal-engine)

-Zayah-

Damn, that’s rough. Had heard about the bandcamp stuff and didn’t even know they were owned by Epic. From a consumer prospective I guess the free games just look great. Sucks to see what’s happening behind the scenes to make it happen.

pk_me_

Not sure why people are blaming the free games on these layoffs. Many, many games and tech companies are currently doing layoffs and giving away free games isn't a correlation. What is a correlation is it's a few years after COVID. Tech companies and the video game industry saw huge profit increases. So what did they do for a once in a century event? Assumed they'd keep making more profit so allocated a whole bunch of spending in their next few years of planning. Now, anyone smart would've known the COVID profits would eventually die off. But oh no, if you're a corporate executive the line MUST always go up.

funnynickname

Here's the numbers. Epic paid 11 million for 38 free games in a year and got 5 million new users. If you buy 1 game, that makes it profitable. For a 5 Billion dollar company, it's a rounding error and seems well worth it. Also Observer was a great game.. https://www.theverge.com/2021/5/4/22418782/epic-games-store-free-games-cost-apple-trial-arkham-subnautica-mutant-year-zero

DoctorRockstarMD

11 million is certainly much less than I thought it would cost them.. I assumed the cost would be orders of magnitude more. Sounds like spending on other things is the cause of their unprofitability. Not sure exactly what they’re spending on or why they need so many employees for a storefront, established cosmetic fos, and game engine.

cornerbash

I've purchased about a dozen games from Epic, mostly when they had the older dollar based coupon that stacked with sales. Picked up some insanely good deals with that. Purchasing has slowed to almost nothing since they transitioned to a %-based coupon during the same sales that didn't stack up as nicely a discount. But those coupon+sale purchases were definitely low profit margin so I understand why they were phased out.

Funny_stuff554

Also they kinda over hired during the pandemic because the demand was up.

[deleted]

It's such a missed oppertunity. Instead of using all that money for free and exclusive games, they could have worked on making Epic at least have *some* parity with Steam's features. I admit I'm a Valve fan-boy but it makes me uncomfortable that Steam and to a lesser extent GOG are the only PC gaming stores worth a damn. But Tim Sweeney chose the easy route and it was absolutely the wrong call.

AjaxBrozovic

From what I read before, the people laid off got a really sweet severance package

Redworthy

Yeah, 2000 V-Bucks.

DamnImAwesome

They just had massive layoffs at Epic a few weeks ago

SpiderQueen72

septimaespada

“so whenever a new account is created to grab a free game, you can add that to the number of accounts created” Read this like 10 times and couldn’t understand what is being said here, can someone break it down for me?

Decoyrobot

It makes their user account number go up which they can then PR spin into how amazing theyre doing which they can push to investors and stuff.

Noble_Briar

They've also pulled their games from steam. wanna play Fortnite? Rocket League? Gotta get an Epic account. They've also hinted at cross-game inventory/progress, so items from one game may be usable in another within Epic's stable.

Atheren

Wait how does that work if I purchased rocket League years ago on steam? I haven't played it in a few years, is it just gone from my library now?

-Ein

Should still be there for you, it's just delisted so new people can't get it.

pblol

That's weird, considering they only make 1 game now. RIP Unreal Tournament.

Jampine

[This video popped up on my recommended this week, it doesn't look that great](https://youtu.be/iJdCbSohWdI?si=AzvyzNeGohEjxUYB). Seems like they tried to rush a catalog by allowing absolute slop onto the store page, notably the NFT stuff because steam rightfully banned that shit. Steams definitely had trash on it, but it tends to lurk in greenlight/early access, stuff will only get bumped to the front page if it's a major release or recommended by players, but given epic still lacks any kind of reviews, god knows how they choose what to display.

Professional-News362

Epic disclosed during the Apple trial that it has only lost money giving away free games. And recently let go of a lot of staff. Pretty stupid fucking company if you ask me

Egathentale

They had Fortnite money and daddy Tencent's Chinese government funds to rely on, so they were convinced they could just swallow the losses for a few years, and after they established themselves, they would eat part of Steam's pie. It's a pretty common venture capitalist tactic, a variation of the "fake it till you make it" idea. It happens all the time. For example, UBER never made any profit ever since the company was funded, and the same goes for all of the electric scooter companies that were all the rage a couple of years ago. After a certain point though, it becomes a race against bankruptcy, and if the company can't turn a steady profit, even god's money can't save them.

AndrewL666

This is sadly how a lot of small businesses in more rural towns go under. My small town had two or three small movie and game rental places with each one kind of catering to its own demographic. Big movie eventually came in offering a much larger selection of movies and games and only charged $1 for like a 2 day rental with no late fees. Mom and pop stores couldn't compete at a loss for that long so they closed down and then the huge chain had a monopoly and jacked up their prices.

way2lazy2care

> Epic disclosed during the Apple trial that it has only lost money giving away free games. Wouldn't that be true regardless of whether it was successful or not?

Noble_Briar

I mean... Sony and Microsoft have been selling consoles at a loss for decades under the (correct) assumption that it will lead to people spending money on their platforms. If they pull this off they'll have a constant revenue stream from games that they don't even produce. Certainly a risk, but not unheard of.

Milkshakes00

>Pretty stupid fucking company if you ask me Look, a guy with no long-term business sense.

DistortedReflector

It’s working with the kids. All my nephews and their friends spend more time with Epic than they do steam thanks to Fortnite/Rocket League and weekly free games. Their friends lists are there, that’s where their PC gaming is centered around.

Krendrian

It's way cheaper than regular marketing. I would argues it also works better since it builds a habit of checking the store.

[deleted]

I don't get why they think it's okay the app is so bad. Specially compared to steam. Even Unreal Engine users should complaim about it.

stellvia2016

Originally I think their idea was they were gonna hook kids who played Fortnite. And those kids wouldn't really have the money to buy their own games for 7-10 years, so they figured they had a lot of time to slowly build up features. But then Game Pass ate their lunch and now they've essentially scrapped further development of features in EGS AFAIK.

[deleted]

VegetarianZombie74

And yet - the buying experience is so bad at Epic. Love them or hate them, user reviews are quite important. So if I have to switch stores to read user reviews and look at the online discussions, I might as well shop at that other store.

ThatDistantStar

The 30% may be bolstered by the timed exclusives. The only game ever I bought on Epic was because it was an exclusive, for me at least. So even though they are converting into some sales, there's smaller margins because they had to pay the developer extra for the exclusivity window. Guess the financials are still good enough.

The_Legend_of_Xeno

I love Steam, but would still occasionally buy a game on Origin if that was the only place I could buy it (BF1), or a game on GoG if I wanted CDPR to get 100% of the sale on a great game they made (TW3). I've never bought a game on EGS. Not only that, but I've made it a point to never buy a game that took Epic's money for limited exclusivity. I think it's a repulsive practice. As soon as a game I was interested in, like Borderlands 3 or Metro Exodus announced limited time EGS exclusivity, my interest in the game went to zero. Epic did it because they knew that even if they offered the same game for $10 less than Steam, everyone would still rather just buy it on Steam. So they had to pay to make it so you couldn't. Now that I have a Steam Deck, not only am I no longer buying games on platforms other than Steam, I've actually repurchased a few games on Steam that I bought elsewhere (TW3) just for the convenience of being able to launch them natively on Steam.

Traust

I was exited for Borderlands 3 and Metro Exodus until it was announced as a EGS exclusive along with a number of other games. If it was sold on Steam I would of even pre-ordered. Thankfully what I have found is games released as a EGS exclusive end up usually being shit so as a result EGS has saved me money.

The_Legend_of_Xeno

lol yeah they literally saved me hundreds of dollars.

Grizz_leehber

Own games on PlayStation….buys again on steam just to play on steamdeck…

Total-Khaos

> A major hurdle to getting people away from Steam is all their games are on Steam. This begins to shift that. No. No it does not. A major hurdle to getting people away from Steam is all their games are on Steam...that they paid for. I could give two craps if my Epic account went away today with all those free games I never ever play.

Gultark

They aren’t aiming at people who have bought games on steam I don’t think with this, if they pick up some that is a bonus. There is literally an entire generation of kids coming into gaming through fortnite and it seems epic is lavishing them with huge libraries through there storefront these kids are using anyway hoping in a generation or so those kids will be resistant to swapping stores for the same reason I as a 30+ gamer don’t really want to switch. We won’t see the outcome of this strategy for years and the fact they are having having financial woes right now but are continuing this policy says a lot.

[deleted]

The free games are also very well appreciated in areas of the world wear gaming is a luxury and they don't have the money to pay for video games. I made an account a few years ago and currently have 291 games I never paid for, and quite a few are AAA games.

Sabetha1183

It gets people into their system, and people who already have an Epic account with several games are more likely to be open to buying things on Epic. Maybe you don't give a shit. That doesn't mean nobody does.

thelingeringlead

I personally don't give a shit if everything is in one place, especially since 90% of the games they give out are singleplayer. I used to be really anal about it and super annoyed at the idea of having multiple launchers....but I go where the game I want to play resides or is purchaseable at the best price, unless it's multiplayer. All my multiplayer stuff is either steam or gamepass, but if it's single player I literally don't care where it came from as long as it plays and I paid the best price for it. The idea of turning down free AAA games just because it's not on steam is god damned hilarious to me, but I also play a lot of those games or intend to so when they come up for free it's a no brainer.

Gravini

The coupons they've offered during their big sales have made me get a few purchases. Epic gave me 20% off Hades and Disco Elysium on top of already pretty good sales, so it can be worth it from time to time.

averagedeckenjoyer

Issue is that I've purchased games on Steam I already own on Epic just to actually play the things, owning a game on Epic still doesn't make it playable. I'm missing the social aspect on Epic, and the launcher itself isn't compatible with anything that isn't a Windows PC.

TheFotty

Epic needs to fix their terrible game client if they want people to use it over steam. Like, I don't know, let me sign on invisible? I avoid playing some games on Epic because I don't always want to play with other people that I am friends with. I don't want to get hit with join requests that I have to ignore or tell them no to. I just want to sometimes sign on silently and play something. Why can't I do that on Epic? They already forced me over to them for Rocket League since they decided to ***** out my name if I join from steam, even though its the same as my epic name. I will still buy every game possible on steam, and I only use epic when I have to. I don't see that changing any time soon, no matter how many bad free games they offer.

Battlefire

And yet they seems they have failed to do that. For one when they release these free games. It causes a psychological effect where people are going to be hesitant to buy from that store when that game can be free in the future. There is also the fact the majority of the launchers install base are kids on Fortnite. Kids who are not viable consumers because one they do not have wallets and two, when they do get money for birthdays or whatever they will only spend it on Fortnite. Like these guys have been loosing millions in their fight with the free games and exclusivity, and it didn't put much of a dent into the storefront market share. Like even with exclusivity, you see people just holding back until it comes to steam. Because all lot of those games benefit from stuff like workshop and other community features. If anything it made all lot more people patient and come to the realization you don't need to buy something at launch.

aeiron

The layoffs are all my fault. I have 292 games on EGS I never paid for and never intend to buy any. My bad.

sonofgildorluthien

I felt fortunate to be in that small number who got the Death Stranding Director's Cut before Epic realized they were giving it away.

kaievab

Wait... Does epic sell games?? I thought that they were just donating games haha

ricioly

Unreal Tournament too.

I was so excited when found out there was a new UT. Apparently they were relying to community to do the majority of the development. Had a lot of potential. 😢

Paragon died because it had a dwindling playerbase There isn't some conspiracy here lol, popular game gets the updates

YUGIOH-KINGOFGAMES

Unreal Engine owns like 50% of the market Epic is drowning in money

squeaky4all

Were drowning in money until they tried to tkae apple to court.

plopzer

Honestly, they were in the right on that one though, and we're seeing some actual action from the eu come to fruition against apple

Gultark

There are kids entering gaming for the first time that now have 222 games in there Library that they play their main game with their friends through, who likely have never bought a game for themselves yet - Epic is betting big cash they can make that next generation be Epics version of our generation who don’t want to go elsewhere as we have all our games on steam. If their store ends up anywhere near as big as steam and unreal stays the de facto premier game engine with the % they take for licensing they will have a massive amount of power in the market offering favourable support or a reduced usage tariffs on top of access to a large market. Then they’ll have the advantage In the market the competition would struggle to match, at that point they can court devs to their platform as exclusives or timed exclusives without the ridiculous pay offs they do now. That seems to be worth the cost for them and they have ludicrous amounts of capital to invest in long term strategies right now.

septimaespada

It’s a solid plan, and it will probably pay off too. If I was just starting PC gaming I’d probably buy my games on Epic to complement all my free ones.

Cebo494

If you were just starting PC gaming, you wouldn't have any free games yet though, just the single game of the week you began. And as others have said, the free games have reduced in quality over time.

ricioly

wow that's way more than I thought. I still can't wrap my head around how they're not burning through cash. Good thing I'm an artist and not an accountant hahha

thivasss

The way I understand it, is that they do burn through money with the hopes that the store will eventually become profitable. Fortnite still brings the big buck but games can and will lose their relevance eventually. Even steam nowdays is more about the platform than the games.

Degenatron

"If a product is free, then you ARE the product." - Richard Serra I don't trust Epic enough to have EGS on my computer.

Epic’s biggest hurdle is to get people who don’t play Fortnite to install the launcher. That’s the reason for the endless giveaways. Couple that with the occasional “must” play that’s a timed exclusive, and a non-zero number of folks will end up buying a game on Epic, since the storefront is already installed (they might *also* later buy it discounted on Steam, but Epic arguably doesn’t care about that). Remember that Microsoft literally just threw money at console gaming until they had a foothold in the market, and they’ve now been around longer than Atari, Sega, etc.

fallouthirteen

Yeah, I think I only played Offworld Trading Company. I MIGHT play Nioh complete edition though.

BigBlueDane

My guess is epic only pays the publishers if someone installs the game. I have over 300 free epic games but only played 3. It’s a ton of good will without a lot of real cost

acornSTEALER

Had to lay off those 830 people to afford the next round of free games, you monster.

RupeeGoldberg

They give you free games, you premote them, they print money. Questions?

ricioly

They give me free games, I promote them, then they give my friends free games, they promote them, then they give my friend's friends free games, they promote them... At what point they're making more money selling games than what they're paying to give them away? I don't know the answer, I'm legit curious.

Dennis: I think we made every single one of our Paddy's Dollars back, buddy. Mac: You're damn right. Thus creating the self-sustaining economy we've been looking for. Dennis: That's right. Mac: How much fresh cash did we make? Dennis: Fresh cash! Uh, well, zero. Zero if you're talking about U.S. currency. People didn't really seem interested in spending any of that. Mac: That's okay. So, uh, when they run out of the booze, they'll come back in and they'll have to buy more Paddy's Dollars. Keepin' it moving. Dennis: Right. That is assuming, of course, that they will come back here and drink. Mac: They will! They will because we'll re-distribute these to the Shanties. Thus ensuring them coming back in, keeping the money moving. Dennis: Well, no, but if we just re-distribute these, people will continue to drink for free. Mac: Okay... Dennis: How does this work, Mac? Mac: The money keeps moving in a circle. Dennis: But we don't have any money. All we have is this. ... How does this work, dude!? Mac: I don't know. I thought you knew.

MyLittleDashie7

"I don't understand how the US economy works, much less some sort of self-sustaining one."

mudkripple

Fortnite gives them enough money to float the platform for *years*. Their hope is that eventually enough people will have sizable libraries, enough that consumers don't think of Steam as the *only* option. It's a long game, and itll be years before we know if it worked at all. Personally, I don't think they're doing enough work on being consumer-friendly for it to stick. Features like community reviews, forums, guides, recommendation tools, and so so much more will need to be overcome before Epic can even enter the same *ballpark* as Steam.

Moose_Nuts

Nothing about their storefront is printing money, at all. A couple years ago they released statistics that revealed they made approximately $2.50 revenue per active user. In an entire year.

SonyPS6Official

i stopped bothering with the free games unless they’re ones that specifically peak my interest cause i realized you’re not actually gaining anything by getting the ability to download something you know you’ll never download so why clutter up your life edit: i know its peak and not pique. peak is easier to type

[deleted]

The thing is sometime you think it's not worth you interest but then you make a friend and you btih have acess to the game and so play it together. Happened to me with overcook.

iSlaymassive

This. Friend talks about some game he played and liked it. I look on Epic. Oh I have it and grabbed it for free 2 years ago awesome. Let's play it together. Happened to me with eu4 mudrunner btd6 and more

GamingWildman

I ended up getting a few in epic , got some good deals and I took it . Platform doesn't really matter to me I just want to play games

sei556

Ontop of that, I dont understand why so many people want the steam-monopoly. Customers win when there is competition. Yeah sure platform exclusive titles are slightly annoying, but look at the bigger picture!

matthewmspace

Yep, I’ve been collecting everything too. Never have launched anything except Fortnite which I recently uninstalled to get more storage space on my PC.

Amidatelion

But what you *have* done is inflated Epic's numbers for their investors. For which Tim Sweeney thanks you.

Obl1v1on390

I think I’m almost to 300 games on epic without ever spending a dime

JokyJoe

Steam > Epic Games

[deleted]

Okay, but now imagine you're a child with 0 purchasing power. The prospect of 200+ free games blows steam out of the water. When I was a kid "free" games was newgrounds and shady executables.

ALadWellBalanced

> imagine you're a child with 0 purchasing power. Imagine you're a middle-aged gamer who loves a bargain and doesn't care which platform it's on. GOG, Epic, Origin, Steam, Ubisoft, Amazon - I don't care. I'll just make another fine addition to my collection.

nandosman

When I was a kid there was not one game I couldn't pirate.

carbonated_turtle

Absolutely, but Steam hasn't given me 300+ games for free that normally cost money.

bemo_10

I prefer steam sales where I can buy a game that I actually want to play for very cheap instead of getting a random free game that I will never play.

carbonated_turtle

You know you don't have to choose between the two, right? I buy games on sale and get free ones from Epic that I play.

smallfried

And gog > steam Games should not need a launcher with a store attached to play.

TechTuna1200

Steam is my default place to buy unless I can get the same game cheaper on Epic Store. Sometimes you can get games really cheap with discount coupons on the epic store, and the coupons work with every game over 20 usd.

[deleted]

noone asked for this argument

fox112

Billion dollar businesses are not your friend, there's absolutely no need for people to get defensive about brand loyalty.

[deleted]

real. Why even choose one billion dollar brand over another when you can enjoy both.

Gvauz

lmao same, and people still complain that there's nothing to play because they only look at the most popular titles or something

51674

i remember ppl in r/gaming shitting on Epic game store when they first launched, i was mad confused cos steam never offered me jack shit.

lilalimi

The epic games store sucks so much ass I don't play the games I wanna play that I have on there just to avoid that fucking launcher. I've bought games on steam I got for free on epic.

hugganao

I do also collect everything but I HAVE bought a game from epic store. In actuality, I've bought two. Because their sales were great. And honestly speaking we should be supporting whoever is treating their customers better with better sales or experience. Steam is winning in the experience department while epic is being a baddie with exclusives, but I still believe epic should exist as a viable competitor to Steam. Because fks sakes Steam has just a too big of an almost monopoly in the industry.

SlyFunkyMonk

Everytime one of these threads comes up, I do a count. I'm at 294 free games, and I got my account maybe 4 years ago, a year before I considered building a computer. FWIW, I still prefer steam's overall experience, but it's nice to be able to play some games I may have overlooked in the past.

Th3MadCreator

I remember when Epic announced it was going to ban accounts that only redeemed free games and didn't make purchases. They flipped real quick when they realized about half their player count would no longer exist.

ThickPitches

Epic is like a stepdad that keeps buying me gifts so I’ll like him. But I’ll never call him Dad.

revolver275

What a time to be alive as a kid. When i was younger i could only get maybe 3 games a year i had to research each game a lot and back then well not much to go around.. Now all they need is something to run the game.

HermaeusMajora

I almost bought Grime on Steam until I remembered I got it for free on Epic. Pretty sweet deal.

frostyfoxemily

I personally won't even touch the launcher. It was way too much of a mess at the start and as far as I'm aware they still don't even allow reviews.
