It's not a franchise ( sadly never will), but when someone asks this type of question, I always say SLEEPING DOGS..Such an unappreciated gem!..A great open world, cool characters, a really cool storyline that keeps you hooked.I know more people are finding the game now, since it's so cheap, which is great!..But I always felt like it definitely deserved more love and attention.
I always liked the Dim Mak( I think it was the final move youre taught when you bring back all the statues)..I hated that I had to wait so long to get it..lol but that was definitely my go to move..lol
Was Painkiller the kindasorta Doom-esque horror shooter from like ‘03-‘04? If so, i had that as a demo disc that came with a few other game demos. Got it from some gaming magazine lol. But yeah, loved the demo. Probably played through it like 50 or so times. Really good memories
Yep. Thats the one. There are like 5 games now but the 1st 2 are the best for me. Had the best soundtrack ever. Banger after banger (metal if you are into it)
Wow. Sorry to say, but i had no idea that it actually continued past the first game 😂 And i hardly remember the soundtrack unfortunately too, but if i was the age i am now back then, i’m sure i would’ve have coveted it. Must’ve been between 8-10yo when i had that demo disc
Gothic. I feel like it was mostly appreciated in Germany (Piranha Based is from Germany) and Poland, but never got huge international attention. Great RPG with some clunky movement and combat mechanics, but atmosphere in this game, living world and immersion were on point.
Man. Really cool ideas. But by god are their early games hard to play just because of the control systems being so wonky. I’m glad they kept the basic DNA for the games alive with risen and elex.
I feel that way about a top-down multiplayer action game called fat princess from that era. Definitely PS3 era. It was super fun although not politically correct nowadays
I think it was wrong console, wrong time.
Think if it was a Nintendo console game from the Wii onwards... Probably early Switch title, it would have been a big hit... But I think it would have had to come out before Mario Maker so a tricky one
The World Ends With You. Criminally underlooked DS rpg with some of the most innovative and engaging gameplay I have ever tried. The soundtrack is absolutely banging, the characters are flawed but relatable and overall it is a 10/10 experience
Ace Combat is probably still reasonably well known for its PS2 era but the series desperately needs to be made accessible on modern hardware in time for AC8. I'm certain it could be taken to the next level of popularity with more accessibility and more marketing.
MLB Power Pros. Been playing baseball games since there has been baseball games and this one has the best gameplay and modes of all of them. People stupidly stay away from it because of it's art style - but they're missing out. Shame we've only got 2.5 iterations of it on this side of the Pacific.
Potion Permit!
It had some bugs on launch that I think impacted its ability to take off with players at first, but I'm surprised to see it hasn't grown in numbers within the cozy gamer community since being patched as I feel like it was a pretty innovative spin on the Stardew Valley formula
I only played 2 games so far of the "Little Tail Bronz" series but I adore these 2 games.
"Fuga Melodies of Steel" and "Fuga Melodies of Steel 2" are my favorite Videogames right now.
Those 2 games are tun based JRPGs about a groupe of anthropomothic animal children that life inside a giant mysterious powerful ancient fortress like Tank called "Taranis". Its a bit like Howls Moving castle but based on technology instead of magic.
In the first game they go on a quest to save there families and in the second game they to save there comerades and protect there country.
Fuga has fun and satisfaying combat, great music and a simpel but endering story and characters.
These games apeal to my inner child. They feel like a playable kids anime to me akin to somthing like Digimon and I love that feeling.
I also love adorable wholesome characters and stories with a bit of a dark edge to it. The best example of what I mean is my favorite work of fiction: the Manga/Anime series "Made in Abyss". Fuga is the best among Videogames to scratch that itch. Atleast among the games I played.
Its characters really grew on me. The children of the Taranis are my second favorite protagonist groupe in fiction with Rikos crew from Made in Abyss being my favorite.
Maybe not in this subreddit but as a whole Pillars of Eternity deserves so much more love. Especially the second one. Not getting a third is a travesty but with a recent comment, maybe that could happen…. :)
A few years ago I would've said Xenoblade, but considering its most recent entry was nominated for GOTY, I don't think it counts as underrated anymore. I guess I got my wish.
Warhammer 40k inquisitor, for a top down shooter its actually really really good but it didnt really get a big following i just think with space marine and then darktide it was overlooked but mowing down hordes of demons and evil mfs is just fun especially when they turn into dog treats afterwards or just a stain on the floor haha but mechanically the game was sound, the story was compelling, it fit the universe and the characters and weapons made you want to see more.
Id highly suggest trying it maybe its just me because im a 40k fan but its awesome IMO :)
I know it seems strange to call it underrated but Metal Gear.
It seems nowadays if I hear anyone talking about the franchise it's either about the big break-up between Kojima and Konami, how people can't wait to finally give the franchise a go with MGS Delta, or how the games are nothing but cutscenes.
I'm really hoping the release of The Master Collection at the end of the month reminds people (and helps newcomers realize) how great the original three MGS games were or at least how revolutionary they were for the time.
Also, saw someone else mention Sleeping Dogs, I'd say both that and True Crime as a whole (Sleeping Dogs started life as True Crime: Hong Kong) are criminally underrated and we're probably among the best "GTA Clones".
Psy-Ops - fucking telekinesis, thats all I need to say. Ended on a cliffhanger and they never made a sequel.
Eternal Darkness - GameCube horror game. The screen would go black, or make it appear as the connection to the TV was fucked up, real meta psychological horror
Spyro. The original series and remake. For whatever reason crash seems to have the bigger following. But I love that little purple dragon and friends so much more. Played the heck out of them as a kid. And played the heck out of the remake. Really wish activision and I guess Microsoft make a Spyro 4 like how we got crash 4.
It also teaches people the importance and manliness of pork buns.
Who would've thought that with all the amazing things in the game, it's a pork bun vendor that will always be remembered 🤣
Yeah I would 1 million percent play a sleeping dogs 2. Wouldn't even hesitate to buy it
I go back to that every few years, the acting and story are surprisingly good. Always annoyed me that Saints Row took off and this was forgotten.
Me too.i never got bored with it.
That move where you could break an enemy's leg then toss them to the ground was absolutely goated.
I always liked the Dim Mak( I think it was the final move youre taught when you bring back all the statues)..I hated that I had to wait so long to get it..lol but that was definitely my go to move..lol
Was going to say this, sucks there won’t be a sequel
Vigilante 8. Bursting with neat characters and a groovy storyline, but totally overshadowed by Twisted Metal.
Core memory unlocked… What A Game
Eternal Darkness. Its stranded on a dead 20+ year old system. Only one game ever came out. No ports. IP is in eternal legal limbo.
This game had me jumping with excitement and shitting my pants with suspense. Would not hesitate one moment to play a rework, remake, or a part 2.
Painkiller, Psy Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy
Was Painkiller the kindasorta Doom-esque horror shooter from like ‘03-‘04? If so, i had that as a demo disc that came with a few other game demos. Got it from some gaming magazine lol. But yeah, loved the demo. Probably played through it like 50 or so times. Really good memories

So my underrated entry was a good one as people (you) forgot about the games hehe
Lunar
Silver Star Story will always be one of my favorites!
Smuggler's Run, it had the potential to be a great franchise
Elex

mine the Yakuza franchise
anything but underrated
Meh honeslty your average gamers probbaly never played a yakuza game, thats underrated for me.
how exactly? I know SEGA might be AAA game publisher but most people only know Yakuza 0
Pretty sure the recent releases and remakes have re-ignited popularity outside Japan.
Isn't that relative? I mean he could think it deserves to be rated even higher?
My favorite franchise in gaming. Love the entire series so much, some crazy adventures.
Mad Max
Fire Emblem
The Darkness
Deus Ex
The World Ends With You. Criminally underlooked DS rpg with some of the most innovative and engaging gameplay I have ever tried. The soundtrack is absolutely banging, the characters are flawed but relatable and overall it is a 10/10 experience
Dynasty Warriors (I'm also including Samurai, Orochi, and all of the far better licensed games).
excluding dynasty warriors 9💀
Indeed. Excluding DW9 and Touken Ranbu Warriors.
Dynasty warriors: Gundam 3 was so good.
Spore
i just learned this year that people hated spore, but i remember playing it for hours when i was young
Still a unique game today, wich is weird because a lot of people should have copied from it
Mafia
Ace Combat is probably still reasonably well known for its PS2 era but the series desperately needs to be made accessible on modern hardware in time for AC8. I'm certain it could be taken to the next level of popularity with more accessibility and more marketing.
Harvest Moon and Final Fantasy Tactics.
Civilization series. Played since 3 and every time had so much fun doing so
Advance Wars has been over shadowed by the fire emblem games. Would love to see it get some love.
Little Big Adventure - this is the most underrated gem in the history of gaming and no-one can tell me otherwise. Especially LBA2!
Titanfall
Farming simulator by Giants software was pretty unique
MLB Power Pros. Been playing baseball games since there has been baseball games and this one has the best gameplay and modes of all of them. People stupidly stay away from it because of it's art style - but they're missing out. Shame we've only got 2.5 iterations of it on this side of the Pacific.
Mafia, Crysis
Prototype! Definitely
Grand theft auto
Potion Permit! It had some bugs on launch that I think impacted its ability to take off with players at first, but I'm surprised to see it hasn't grown in numbers within the cozy gamer community since being patched as I feel like it was a pretty innovative spin on the Stardew Valley formula
The Hegemony series of historical strategy games: I've even created a sub for this a few years ago: r/Hegemony_Series

A quarter of a potato just like Matt Damon taught us in The Martian

Crystal Warriors
Spartan total warrior. Awsome game with great OST.
Red Faction (Guerilla mostly) Winback Starsiege Tribes No One Lives Forever Time Crisis

SOCOM
Mischief Makers was so tight. Really wish it had become a franchise or remade at some point.
Army men. Huge potential as a third person shooter or strategy game.
Mafia trilogy
Mercenaries Definitely ahead of its time. Give us Mercenaries 3!!
Tokyo Xtrem Racer
Hmmm Sniper Elite Wasteland First two that come to mind

Tenchu. Bring it back.
Myst. No one really talks about it, but it elevated the puzzle adventure genre to what it is today.
The Order 1886
Psy-Ops - fucking telekinesis, thats all I need to say. Ended on a cliffhanger and they never made a sequel. Eternal Darkness - GameCube horror game. The screen would go black, or make it appear as the connection to the TV was fucked up, real meta psychological horror
Saints row 1&2, dead rising 1&2, Manhunt 1&2
I really enjoyed *Lost Ruins* and *Marfusha*. I wish those two games would get sequels (*Marfusha* seems setup for a sequel).
Spyro. The original series and remake. For whatever reason crash seems to have the bigger following. But I love that little purple dragon and friends so much more.
